Post any tips and tricks you have for those new to or those looking to improve the ESO experience.

One of my tips:

Unless you're super dedicated to the stealth playthrough in RPG's, don't use the nightblade class. It's horrible. May improve with the release of the Dark Brotherhood DLC but I'm unsure.

Great idea for a thread, KoB!

I agree, the Nightblade class is not very rewarding at present. Hopefully there will be a boost (especially healing) for that class as well as for stealth Stamina characters, like dedicated archers.

I suggest starting to learn equipment traits early, even if you don’t think you’ll want to do crafting. It takes a long time to research traits.

Along similar lines, wear at least one piece of Light, Medium, and Heavy armor to increase all of the skills while you’re leveling. Even if you think you will only wear one type, the rules change so it’s best to be prepared to adjust your plan.

I have (unsurprisingly) a number of characters. All of them have some way to earn enough gold every day to train their riding skills when they’re not adventuring. One Provisioning writ will do the trick after around level 15, or they can craft a few items for sale, or one guy is parked in Auridon stealing stuff. By the time some of them get to play for real they will have fully trained mounts. That will help immensely.

Even solo players like me should join a trade guild to unload loot such as surplus crafting materials and style books. Also I’ve found a few traits to research and fun recipes in the guild stores.

I'm going to have to disagree with you guys on Nightblades. Some of the strongest PvP players are Nightblades, dishing out over 20k damage in a single attack. ohmy.gif I'd say it's a class for players who are good at managing the minute details of a character's stats, since all of their abilities need to be perfectly in sync.

Echoing Grits, start crafting and researching traits as soon as you can. It can take a while to level it up but I'd say it's essential to be able to craft your own high level gear sets. I'm still trying to do trait research, because I ignored it for ages.

Visit stables and level up your riding skills every day, even if you don't have a mount. The skills applies to all mounts that character has or will have, and once you get a certain number of points in each category your mount gets aesthetic upgrades like armour and saddlebags!

DON'T SPEND CROWN POINTS TO RE-DO YOUR SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES. Took me several months before I realised that some cities have shrines which can be used to reset your skill and attribute points using in-game gold rather than buying those reset scrolls from the crown store.

As an extension to the point above - Don't be afraid to try new abilities and skills, since you can easily reset your points and rebuild your character with the abilities you've tested out and enjoyed. I can't tell you how often I've overlooked a skill for ages, only to find it to be essential to my play style further down the line.

Posted by: Grits May 21 2016, 02:45 PM

hazmick, sorry I should have specified my context for the Nightblade skills is solo stealth archer Lil, who is still leveling and has no interest in PvP. The issue is self-healing in PvE at her level. Also the flashy melee-style class skills are not her thing, just the stealth ones.

That brings up another point, the importance of context. Attribute distribution including gear and other bonuses makes a big difference in how skills work. Also building a solo adventurer is different from building an optimized character with PvP as the goal, not to mention that things are different while leveling. Aand the many updates have made a lot of online information obsolete, so when reading comments make sure they’re still relevant.

When you play has a big impact as well. I often play without seeing another player outside of towns, which means that materials and treasure chests are plentiful but help is non-existent. On the occasions when someone (Lildereth, poor thing) needs help with something I’ll play when it’s more crowded. Then everything seems easy because other players are helping, but there is no point in trying to get anything but your own loot from the environment.

hazmick, I also played for a long time before I realized what those respec shrines are for. bigsmile.gif It’s very cheap to switch morphs, so don’t be afraid to try different ones to see what combinations work best.

There are usually threads about Nightblade character builds over on the ESO forums. People always have specific abilities, attribute, champion point, enchantment, item, and gear recommendations.

Classes are always getting messed around with in updates and such too. One update might nerf a Nightblade ability so players need to rework their entire play style, the next update might nerf a different class and Nightblade will need to be reworked again. If you just do PvE then it's not too hard, but if you do lots of PvP then you need to be good at balancing all that stuff.

Deltia’s Gaming videos have helped me a lot. He explains the changes and their implications very well.

Here’s a tip that I may have heard before but just finally sunk in: you can start leveling your second weapon skill by putting it on your bar even while you use the main weapon. It seems obvious now, but I would never have come up with that on my own.

Posted by: hazmick May 26 2016, 12:23 AM

As an extension of that ^ point:

You level up any item or skill that you have equipped at the moment you receive any experience. Want to level up an ability? Put it in your current ability bar. When you get two ability bars (at level 15) your exp will only go to the abilities on the bar you are currently using, so keep switching them around to level them evenly, or make sure to have important abilities equipped when you get any exp.

As Grits mentioned earlier, wearing a mix of light, medium, and heavy armour will level all of them up. Of course the more of one type you wear, the faster that will level. Read up on the different armour types' passive skills to see which ones you might be interested in.

The best way to level up a second weapon is to equip it just before you turn in a quest and get the reward exp. I got my two-handed sword skill to max level without ever using it in combat.

This one is really obvious, but READ EVERYTHING. Don't ignore any bookshelves, because you might find skill books lurking there.

In order to level up your Mages Guild skill line you will need to find rare books from Shalidor's library. These can be found dotted all over the world, in a variety of locations, and can be identified by their purple/blue covers and magical glow.

To level up your Fighters Guild skill line you need to kill Daedra and Undead. You'll encounter endless numbers of both over the course of your adventures so it's not something to worry about.

Here's one that I wish I could go back in time and tell myself - Don't sell weapons and armour. You get very little gold, and would be better off breaking them down into components or researching traits.

Once you hit Vet rank 16, (or champion rank 160 I suppose it is now), you will need lots of materials for max level gear. I'm talking 150 Rubedo Leather to craft a medium chest piece.

If you do need gold, then crafting writs are a good source. If you have the Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood expansions then they provide radiant quests that pay out really well for very little work.

There's not much in the game to actually spend gold on. The only thing I buy is the occasional style motif book from guild traders, though most of my spending goes towards repairing my gear.

You DON'T need to be part of a guild in order to BUY things from any guild traders you see in the world. You DO need to be part of a guild if you want to SELL things to guild traders.

Always check out guild traders, and shop around before buying something since there are no set prices. There have been a few occasions where I've bought a style book from one guild trader and then found the same thing for half the price at another trader.

Yeah, you flip forward while magically zooming in without using a scope wink.gif

Posted by: Grits Aug 14 2016, 07:16 PM

Acadian, I don't know a way to cancel the shot once you start to draw. I wish I did!

Posted by: Acadian Sep 3 2016, 02:53 PM

I'm confused about weapon enchantments. Do they take effect with every strike?

The reason I ask is because of two weapon traits -

Charge says it increases your chance to apply status effects by X%. I would have thought the weapon simply applied the charge on every strike?
Infused says (in part) ...and reduces enchantment cooldown by X%. Cooldown for a weapon enchantment?

If they don't take effect simply on every shot and I can't unnock an arrow to save charges and they do eat soul gems to stay charged, I'm wondering if I might prefer enchantless bows. . . . wacko.gif I'm hoping that there is something I don't understand.

Edit: Oh, Grits, I simply love that misty shot of gorgeousJerricalloneword in his ancestral snowy homeland. happy.gif

Posted by: Grits Sep 3 2016, 04:21 PM

Acadian, thank you, that was a magical morning in the woods! smile.gif

As far as I know the enchantments do not apply to every strike, and neither does poison. Putting poison on the weapon suppresses the enchantment, but I don’t know how that works as far as using up the weapons’ charges. I suspect that an enchanted weapon’s charge would not be used while a poison was equipped on the weapon, which could save on soul gems. This is something I’m curious about as well, since Jerric runs through a ton of soul gems and often does not need the extra boost from the weapon’s enchantment. He gets a lot of grand soul gems from his adventuring and greater soul gems from Darnand’s Enchanting writs, but he hates to waste the energy.

So I think that a Charged-trait weapon would have an increased chance to apply a status effect such as the chilled/concussed/burning secondary elemental effects, while an Infused weapon would have a reduced internal cooldown for applying the enchantment effect such as frost/shock/fire, perhaps 3 seconds instead of 4 seconds.

I am still in the dark as to how the applied poisons work with weapon traits. I think it would depend on if applied poison (meaning from Alchemy and not a poison enchantment) is a status effect.

Thanks. Heh, looks like weapon enchantments remain a bit mysterious.

Another question. Buffy has the 'hide helmets' option checked. Does anyone know if that applies to costumes? She quite likes costumes. Some of the ones that come with headgear would be fun - as long as they don't cover her hair! tongue.gif

Posted by: hazmick Sep 5 2016, 08:37 PM

Yep, it applies to costumes too. Haa-Rei often hides his headgear since most helmets in the game look ridiculous when shaped to Argonian heads. If it ain't a hood, he ain't wearing it.

Posted by: Acadian Sep 5 2016, 08:40 PM

Oh thanks so much for letting me know. I didn't want to buy a costume just to find out. Thanks!

I also keep my helmet hidden all the time, so was really surprised when I saw my latest helmet for the first time after wearing it quite a while, lol. It looks ilke someone killed a bird and stuck it on her head, lol. I do have some costumes for the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild that come with hoods when I see others wearing them; but don't remember seeing Misa's face covered; so I think the hidden helmet does apply to costumes too.

Posted by: Acadian Sep 6 2016, 08:06 PM

It surely does apply to costumes! After hazmick mentioned that, I got another set of costumes that have real potential without the headgear. Not only can I lose the headgear but I can dye them as well. Those discoveries go a long way toward allowing me to ignore what her armor underneath actually looks like as she grows into higher level/mismatching/uglier sets.

From what I can tell, the Bosmer bottom of the line rawhide medium armor is the best looking for Buffy of the lot. Even upgrading to hide is a step down appearance-wise. Happily costumes are the cure!

Those clothes Calia was trying on for Buffy are all clothing items that Bubba stole from various places and "laundered" so the girls could have some casual outfits and dresses for hanging out "around town," (AKA: The Daggerfall Crown Store) laugh.gif

I am seriously going to make my girls those Argonian shorts and Bosmer top - just for something to hang around town in that looks cute and casual.

Posted by: Grits Sep 6 2016, 09:14 PM

Acadian, Lil still has her Rawhide Bosmer medium armor in its original buckskin colors and her Hide set dyed in her favorite shades of green to wear when she’s not in too much danger. To me the very first set of Rawhide still looks the best. Even Jerric who pays little attention to his appearance has some costumes that he will wear when his armor looks outlandish or otherwise inappropriate. (That’s how he ended up without chest armor in a very bad place. Lesson learned ! laugh.gif ) I think the costume system is genius and just getting better with the new hairstyles, body paints, eyelashes, and other adornments that are coming.

mALX, that Bosmer top with Argonian shorts looks very cute! Jerric used to wear shorts like that for fishing. He called them his fishing garters, lol. “Daggerfall Crown Store,” ha!!

Those hairstyles; can you get hair for a race now that the game doesn't offer? Like Blonde for Bosmer or Red for Imperials? Because if so, I may spend the crowns for that!

Posted by: Grits Sep 6 2016, 10:49 PM

Nope, their hair color stays the same and you just change the style. They say that race and gender restrictions are the same as at character creation, but I’d swear that there were more styles available for Lildereth than before. Not new styles, just styles from other races. And Jerric could use some of the Redguard styles that I don’t think he could use at character creation.

I wish Imperials could have red hair. The closest I could get for Rowan is a sort of medium auburn.

Charge increasing the status effects just means that (whatever enchantment you have on that weapon) = it won't use up its charges as quicky; won't require charging as often. I normally don't waste a trait on this, just carry enough soul gems to cover recharging my weapons as needed.

On the reducing the cooldown: Some weapon enchants will say something along the lines of “this can only occur every X seconds”, so for these, it will reduce the value of X.

If you enchant your weapon for things like "Crusher," "Rage," "Hardening," or "Weakening" - that cooldown applies. (I never use these enchantments, usually just use them for researching traits or deconstructing when I get them in loot).

Posted by: Grits Sep 11 2016, 02:13 AM

mALX, take another look at the Charged trait. It used to just save you on soul gems for recharging, but in the Dark Brotherhood update they changed it to increase the chance to apply status effects.

Here’s a snip from the patch notes, base game section:

~~~
Item Trait Improvements
Item Traits have undergone revision to improve the viability and balance of each Trait. Some Traits have received complete redesigns, other Traits have gained new effects and bonuses, while some other Traits have simply received better number tuning.
• Weapons
o Charged: This trait now increases your chance to apply status effects instead of increasing the amount of enchantment charges on your weapon.
o Defending: This trait now increases your Physical Resistance and Spell Resistance by flat values instead of percentages.
o Infused: This trait now also reduces the cooldown on your weapon enchantment in addition to increasing its damage.
o Intricate: This trait now also increases the amount of refined materials you obtain whenever you deconstruct the weapon, in addition to increasing the amount of inspiration gained.
o Nirnhoned: This trait now increases the damage of the weapon.
o Powered: This trait now increases your healing done instead of reducing the cooldown on your weapon enchantment.
o Sharpened: This trait now increases your Physical Penetration and Spell Penetration by flat values instead of percentages.
o Training: This trait now increases all experience gained from all kills by a percentage instead of increasing your weapon skill line experience only.
o Weighted: This trait now grants you a chance to gain additional Ultimate whenever you generate Ultimate normally, and has been renamed to Decisive.
• Armor
o Exploration: This trait now increases all gold gained from monster kills instead of increasing exploration experience gained, and has been renamed to Prosperous.
o Impenetrable: This trait now also reduces the durability damage taken of the item, in addition to reducing the damage taken from Critical Hits.
o Intricate: This trait now also increases the amount of refined materials you obtain whenever you deconstruct the armor, in addition to increasing the amount of inspiration gained.
o Nirnhoned: This trait now increases Physical Resistance and Spell Resistance by a flat value.
o Sturdy: This trait now reduces the cost of Block.
o Training: This trait now increases all experience gained from all kills by a percentage, instead of increasing your armor skill line experience only.
o Well-fitted: This trait now also reduces the cost of Roll Dodge, in addition to reducing the cost of Sprint.
Posted by: mALX Sep 11 2016, 04:08 PM
Status Effects is not the same thing as the damage though. It will always do the damage it says it will; but not always give the "Status Effects."
Example: Frost slows with a chance to freeze in place, lightning has a chance to stun, etc.
It is dependent on the weapon’s enchantment; like if your sword or bow is enchanted with fire = every time the fire enchant adds damage there is a % chance it produces an additional burning DoT.
But every time you strike, the enemy is getting fire damage unless they are immune to fire. In that case they only take the basic damage the weapon offers.
There are numerous enemies immune to fire and especially cold; and some immune to shock. There is an enchantment that does "Irresistible" damage; or you can use an "Absorb Health;" which bypasses immunity plus gives you a source of healing while in combat. (Which is what I use).
ELEMENTAL STATUSES:
Chilled - Applies Snared i.e. slows movement speed by 40% for 5 sec. Chance to proc from any frost damage (frost staff, frost enchants, Ice Comet (mages guild)).
Concussion - Applies Minor Maim i.e. reduces damage done by 15% for 4 sec. Animation: electric sparkles. Chance to proc from any lightning damage (sorcerer storm calling spells, lightning staff and shock enchants).
Burning - Flame damage over time for 3 sec (tics 3 times, every 1,5sec). Chance to proc from any flame damage (dragon knight ardent flame skills, flame staff and flame enchants).
DISABLING EFFECTS: complete loss of control of the character
Knocked Down – Totally disabled: knocked to the ground and cannot move or perform actions (duration varies between spells, 2-3.5 seconds). During knocked down status one cannot be pulled or knocked back. Example: Crystal Shard (sorcerer), stonefist (DK).
Stunned – Unable to move, attack, or perform any actions, susceptible to further cc during stun. Example: Shield Charge (1H&S), Toppling Charge (Templar).
Off balance - Short disable that breaks on damage taken AND vulnerability to Heavy Attack (even partially charged) causing Knocked Down. Off balance vulnerability lasts regardless of damage taken for 4 sec unless utilized by heavy attack sooner. Animation: White glowing circle/spiral above head. Blocking enemy’s heavy melee attack or interrupting an enemy cast knocks them off balance and opens them to your Heavy attack and consecutive Knocked Down effect. Also is an effect from many class and weapon skills.
Disoriented – Long but fragile disable (cannot move/perform action) that will break from any damage taken. From many class and weapon spells, Rune Prison (sorcerer), Shock Touch (shock staff), Scatter shot (bow).
Silenced – Unable to cast spells, can move and use physical attacks. From Negate Magic (sorcerer). Countered by Immovable (heavy armor skill), Break free or moving out of the area.
Feared – Running away from the caster unable to perform any actions. Example: Aspect of Terror (Nightblade), Turn Undead (Fighter’s Guild), Roar (Werewolf).
Pull – Pulled to the caster, while in air unable to perform any actions. Examples: Silver leash (Fighter’s Guild), Fiery Grip (DK). Counts as hard cc as it triggers immunity on target in pvp.
Knockback - Pushed away from caster for 5 meters. Note: Spells can have Knockback in conjunction with other status effects like a knock down/stun/disorient effect (like Binding Javelin, Fire Clench, Scatter Shot), or as a plain knockback (like Piercing Javelin or Fire Touch).
SOFT CC: hinder movement (flying creatures are immune to these)
Immobile – Rooted i.e. unable to move, but can attack/perform actions. For example: Dark talons (DK), Encase (sorcerer), Stampede (2h). Note: Frost Touch (frost staff) has Deep freeze and Deeper freeze effects that seem to be equal to an immobilize, but an elemental effect.
Snared - Slowed movement speed, but can perform attacks or other actions. Percentage varying between spells? Animation: cloudy effect around feet. Example: Low Slash (1H&S), Sun Fire (Templar).
OTHER:
Taunted – Forced to attack you (PvE only) for 15 sec. Only from Puncture (1H&S) and Inner Fire (Undaunted) and their morphs.
Blind - Raised chance to miss, percentage varies from spell to spell. Removed from player abilities, but some NPCs use it. Also available as armor set bonus (Akatosh's blessed armor).
Bleed - Physical damage over time, most commonly 10 sec. From passive traits for axes and some weapon attacks.
Poisoned - Poison damage over time for 12 sec (tics 7 times every 2 sec, damage per tic approximately half of burning tic). Chance to proc from poison damage (poison enchants and certain weapon attacks such as Venom arrow or Lethal Arrow (Bow). Note: Poison is often applied in conjunction with healing reduction effect, but is a separate effect.
Diseased - Applies Minor Defile debuff for couple of seconds that reduces healing taken by 15% (suggested to be reduced health regeneration too). Animation: green cloud and health bar has inward arrowheads. Chance to proc from any disease damage (meat bag siege catapults, werewolf infectious claws and foul weapon enchants).
Immovability – “Immunity to knockback and disabling effects”, does not affect soft cc. Animation effect: swirling wind around the character). Gained when hard CC ends (naturally or when broken/reflected), from activating Immovable (heavy armour skill) or from potions.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO NEGATE STATUS EFFECTS IF THEY ARE USED ON YOU:
Break Free – costs stamina; removes stun, disorient, knockdown, also get 5 sec Immovability.
Dodge – costs stamina (cheaper than CCbreak), breaks soft cc i.e. immobilize, may avoid aoe.
Cleanse/Purge/Purify – Removes negative effects. Templar synergy or AvA support spell, Dark Cloak (NB).
Block - negates any attempt to CC, even if you take partial damage from the attack itself. NO Immovability effect after.
Reflect – negates attempt to CC and gives the effect to its caster instead, get Immovability. From Defensive
Posture (1h&s), Reflective scale (DK), some armor set bonuses.
Invisibility (potion or NB cloak) - avoid projectiles/ targeted CC completely if timed correctly, but does not prevent aoe effects hitting.
Snare Break – Remove snare. Example: Forward momentum (2H).
Oh wait; if you look the "Infused" up instead of "Charged" it talks about a "Cooldown" - looking that up does talk about what you are referring to:
Weapons can have those enchantments on them, like "deal 40 fire damage" -
In ESO such effects don't happen with every single attack you perform, since it would ruin PvP (everyone would just use very fast light attacks instead of heavy combat)
So the game uses an "internal cooldown" for how often those effects can trigger to mathematically normalize the effect vs the given attack speed.
(So you were right, Acadian!!!)
From what I read; the actual cooldown is around 4 seconds, so your fire weapon will trigger the fire damage effect every 4 seconds of your attack. (which is what my poison armor bonus was doing; but the enemy was dying on the first hit unless they were boss fights - so the cooldown didn't matter)
The enchant "Infused" will now reduce this cooldown by 1 second, so it can trigger every 3 seconds instead of 4; plus it increases the effects of the enchantment.
Truthfully - I've never been able to tell because the absorb health has always kept my bow or swords glowing steadily in combat; and my Character's arms glow when she has been injured and the weapon is healing her; so - hasn't effected my combat that I could see.
I normally use Precise; Sharpened; or Infused on my weapon traits; always have. They are just right for me, for my combat style.
Thanks for that cool down info. That all makes sense now. smile.gif
Posted by: Grits Sep 11 2016, 05:29 PM
mALX, thanks for the follow-up! I like Infused while a character is struggling with resource management. Infused trait with an Absorb enchantment helps a lot.
Jerric has a looted Infused sword that was already enchanted with Absorb Stamina. He would have chosen to use Absorb Magicka or Absorb Health, but with his roll-dodge and bashing buffs and that sword he is a maniac at melee range. He could hardly take down river trolls until he started using it, they would heal too fast. Now they are still a horrendously grueling battle and best avoided, but he can manage it.
That’s a great discussion of status effects. I wish I could find a player’s guide that has been updated with info for alchemical poisons. I can’t figure out if alchemical poison is treated the same way as the other poison effects as far as synergy with traits and Champion Points.
I like Well-fitted too; but I notice that description doesn't include the cost of sneaking!
Whenever they talk about "improvements" I read it as "F'n up my game." Exploration was a good trait, Prosperous is ridiculous and useless. A lot of people went through a lot of expense buying armor to help them gain XP and now are stuck with a little extra gold in chests and a big FU for their time researching that trait.
Same with the upcoming "scaling the world to the Player's level" so Players will no longer be able to obtain mats under their level UNLESS THEY DO WRITS; where they will gain low level stuff as a reward? That makes absolutely NO sense.
They already have the low level mats in select areas (starter zones); and the mats increase with the difficulty of the areas. So in order to make "One Tamriel" where people could travel around and do different areas they felt the need to make every enemy at the Players current level; okay - but the plants and trees too? Why? It is just plain stupid, like they didn't know when to rein in their ideas and are taking this too far.
Numerous times since I have been playing this game I have wished they would just stop screwing with it. It was such a perfect and fun game when I started playing it a year ago, and most of the changes they have made other than the DLC have not enhanced the game at all - just the opposite. They keep tweaking and fiddling till they ruin the awesome game they created.
Someone needs to remind them that "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
I wonder if games have always used them and we never knew it, lol.
Sorry for the wrong info I gave on that; I had no idea they would do something like that without a disclosure in the description; especially since they did disclose it in some other places.
Rosa, you can guess why Jerric is a fan of it! laugh.gif
mALX, I suspect that they will eventually change the way they have re-done resource nodes. I liked being able to collect materials for the next level of gear while adventuring so that my crafters can have a set ready as soon as someone levels up. For example Aninah has been collecting Hide while wearing Rawhide from adventuring in the next area. Now she will have to wait until she can wear the new stuff before she can find the mats for it, but on the plus side she will find Leather and Cotton wherever she is as soon as she’s able to wear it.
Crafting for friends will be an issue. It will be easy for the friend to collect their own crafting materials and pass them to the crafter, but surprise gifts are going to be hard to pull off once everyone works through their materials stash. Maybe players will use Guild banks more to offer free deconstructible gear for mats instead of selling it for practically nothing.
mALX, thanks for the follow-up! I like Infused while a character is struggling with resource management. Infused trait with an Absorb enchantment helps a lot.
Jerric has a looted Infused sword that was already enchanted with Absorb Stamina. He would have chosen to use Absorb Magicka or Absorb Health, but with his roll-dodge and bashing buffs and that sword he is a maniac at melee range. He could hardly take down river trolls until he started using it, they would heal too fast. Now they are still a horrendously grueling battle and best avoided, but he can manage it.
That’s a great discussion of status effects. I wish I could find a player’s guide that has been updated with info for alchemical poisons. I can’t figure out if alchemical poison is treated the same way as the other poison effects as far as synergy with traits and Champion Points.
Yes, that "Absorb" has saved my character's life consistently. She has died if jumped on by 5 or more; or from some big bosses. Other than that, she can kick some butt with that "absorb" on there, lol.
I hope you are right and that they rethink that. I think they are doing this to press for more "Plus" memberships so people will have the space to stock up mats for various levels in their "Crafting Bag of Holding."
But you are right, it totally effects being able to make a nice gift of armor for someone without asking them to provide the mats - then it isn't a gift anymore, what good is that?
"I'll give you a gift, but only if you give me the stuff to make it with...."
I'd feel like a jerk saying something like that! I've already written a scathing letter to them voicing my opinion on their latest list of "improvements."
What I plan to do if they go through with that is to start sending one of my Alts out for mats. Britta - she is like level 11. Calia of Daggerfall (another alt because she grunts and I don't like playing her and hearing it) - can gather for the next level.
I can push Bubba up to the third level to gather; and (Formerly Pantsless but now Topless) Calia of the Aldmeri can grow some and handle the next level above Bubba. Anything above that would be champion level; and Misa should be able to handle.
I'll put them all to work gathering mats at various levels and make a fortune selling them in the Guild Stores, BWAAHAA!!
But it most def will hinder my ability to just spontaneously make a gift for someone - like last night, a very new to the game girl stopped Misa in Davon's Watch and asked about her new armor (screens and stats later) - it takes knowing 5 traits, so I stopped what I was doing (nothing) and made her a set spur of the moment.
Those early materials have always been easy to gather in Stonefalls - and the low level runes to enchant them with too. I can't imagine giving someone unenchanted armor/weapons; so it isn't just the mats I'd need to gather; but runes too. And I wonder if the low level tempers to improve it will become unavailable too! So what, I have to give out white level armor now? Grrrrrr.
Yeah, this is one of those just plain stupid ideas some of these developers just need to be smacked down over. And giving a high level player some low level mats as a reward for doing writs thereby forcing them to do writs if they want them? - every time I heard him say that in the vid it made me want to write them another scathing letter, lol.
If worse comes to it, I'll start another character just to get supplies to Misa for crafting before I'd ever charge a friend for a gift by making them gather the mats.
Armor traits and awkward first dates:
The Bosmeri lass opened her tree-bole’s front door to find her blind date grinning nervously down at her. She sighed. He was a Nord.
“Hi, I’m Jerric. Pleased to meet you. Here, I brought you a gift. It’s boots of Well-Fitted. And a belt of Well-Fitted. And also would you consider wearing this Well-Fitted hat? Uh… no reason.”
I am a fan of having many characters at all levels, so I will be OK with the changes. I can see how other folks will have trouble, though. People with limited time are not going to love making new characters and getting them to certain levels just so that they can be generous to their friends, but I know some will still go to the trouble. Maybe the writs stashes will make up the difference.
On the plus side the first-tier stuff will be super easy to get at all levels for non-crafters since it will make up 50% of everywhere, so it will still be easy to craft for new players. By the time new folks get to the second tier, hopefully they will have caught on to the crafting mechanics and know to gather their own mats. Still, the proposed system will not suit everyone. Maybe it will get another tweak.
Yeah, I think that change will draw a distinct line between how much effort a Player is willing to put out for another - it will suck the fun out of doing something for others and make it a grueling task.
I am probably a slow learner; but I didn't make my first armor over the lowest level till about a month ago; and have never made one for Misa or my "Alt" characters. This girl from Australia that I met online a year ago and have played with this whole past year has made all Misa's armors for her. The "Alts" have always worn Misa's hand-me-downs.
So my "gifts" had to always be for new (lowest level) players only; which was fine, because they are usually the ones that need the boost and it is a nice "Welcome" to the game for them.
Several people gave me a nice gift of armor and weapons when I first started, so it is kind of a "Paying it back" for me, and I really enjoy it.
Even now I can only make armor and weapons for Buffy's current level (and only because I just now sank points into it to do it for her).
In fact, I didn't even know of or start doing writs till you (Grits) said how much gold they paid, laugh.gif The only crafting skill I've even reached 50 in was Enchanting; and that was because the girl who makes Misa's armor helped her get there.
Here's a tip that we learned through trial and error. To reduce confusion over what is in Buffy's skill bar, we turned on the settings option so the bar shows all the time at the bottom of our screen.
Well, we noticed the skills go bright and dim. . . and figured out that indicates if there is a target in range. Since range is life to Buffy, this lets her know exactly the distance she needs to sneak up to barely within range for an attack. At least for us, this has been a very helpful discovery.
That’s a great tip, Acadian! I had forgotten that you could turn it to be always on. The skill greying out until you are in range helps me a lot. Now that Lil is using Snipe all the time I tend to think Jerric should be able to use his ranged skills long before he actually can.
That was one of the things I really enjoy about ESO thus far: the unexpected acts of kindness from other players.
For me paying it forward is helping another solo player take on a boss if I see something going south.
I had a player unexpectedly resurrect Julian out of the blue when I was trying to kill Faolchu in the Glenumbra quest line. Unfortunately I didn't note the player's name (my adrenaline was too high after so many unsuccessful attempts) so I never did thank that player. Julian now carries around filled soul gems so she can do the same.
Mazul hasn't yet collected very many, and she keeps draining the enchantments out of her quest items (she keeps trading up). I suspect she is slower to move through the quests because I noticed she is taking them on at higher levels than Julian did.
That's okay. Julian is currently a level or two higher than the quests she's on right now, so that's cool. And at Level 18 she is starting to feel more confident and not quite so hesitant. She also discovered how to use her magic attack from stealth, but still prefers to take them on one at a time.
I know I had more questions! So here are one (or maybe two) of them.
I suspect part of the reason I'm still struggling with inventory management is I'm not clear on how it works. Notably the bank. If I have items in the bank (not in the player's inventory), can I still access them when I'm working at a crafting station? Or does one need the Crafting Bag of Holding for that? I keep running out of inventory when Mazul or Julian are crafting writs.
Also, what does stacking items mean? Does it mean what I think it means - multiples of identical items take up one slot. I've tried using the "Stack All" key when in the inventory menu but I never see it make a difference.
I just figured out how buying from Guild Stores work. So Julian bought a bunch of crafting style books for Mazul. I didn't pick them up while I was logged in with Julian, because I was afraid they would go into Julian's inventory, then she'd have to put them into the bank, yada yada yada. So I left them in the emails until Mazul logged in, then she picked them up. Mazul is excited to craft some good stuff for Julian, but she needs to get more researching done first. And it's frustrating that she can only research one trait at a time in each craft. Ugh.
Yes, the crafting items that are in your bank are accessible through the crafting stations, you do not need to have them in your character's inventory. Weapons and armor that are in your bank can also be deconstructed or have their traits researched through the crafting stations, so you do not have to carry that stuff around with you either. Just be careful not to deconstruct something that you thought you put "safely" in the bank, I've done that!
As far as stacking, this is what I think it means. When you have more than 200 of the same item, say 207 ores, the first 200 take one inventory space and the next 7 takes up another space , up to the next 200. If you were to remove 30 ores you could "stack" the 7 into the remaining 170 and only take up one space again for the 177. On the PS4 items don't re-stack themselves into different slots when they can, you have to do it by hitting the stack button.
Yay, book shopping! biggrin.gif You can use skill points to get perks in the equipment skills that let you research up to three items at a time. My researchers all have those perks, otherwise it would take forever. Once they finish all of their research they can re-spec their skill points at a shrine in one of the major cities, so no skill points are permanently wasted. You just have to pay gold at the shrine or buy a Crown "scroll" and your skill points are reset. You can do the same if you want to change your attribute (Magicka, Health, Stamina) distribution.
Posted by: mALX Sep 16 2016, 01:31 AM
Ditto all Grits said, especially sinking points into the ability to research more items than one at a time if you are going to get into crafting. When you have everything researched it is easy to reset your stats and get those skill points back to use in some other place.
On the "Stack all items" = it does work. I have been crafting and used some out of a stack of 200 mats; then did some refining and added some and not had them stack properly for some reason. Hitting that has fixed the issue. It only works if there are two stacks of the same item and both are under 200.
I have noticed those bodies several times recently; really not sure if there is some achievement involved in that or what !!!! But I agree, it is eerie the way they are all lying in the same position and all facing the same direction, etc.
That is so funny about the horse! Daggerfall has some spectacular mage light shows on weekends; I have shots of some that were better than fireworks in RL!
Posted by: haute ecole rider Sep 17 2016, 03:51 PM
I have actually seen PC's killing NPC's from time to time. I'm so new to this still that I'm not sure if this is a new fad or if it's something that has always happened.
Sometimes they are sneak attacks. A PC will sneak up on some nondescript NPC and kill her with an ambush attack. Other times it's a wizard type PC throwing lethal magic around and killing guards and civilians indiscriminately. I suspect those are the bodies you are seeing, mALX - you described the arrangement of bodies typical of a shock wave or blast wave type of event.
Okay, my next question. Both here and elsewhere I keep seeing references to "daily quests." Just what are those? Both Julian and Mazul need to level up before they can tackle the next quests in their stories. Mazul needs to learn how to make enchanted gear so she can forge up a set of heavy armor that will absorb magicka for her. She keeps getting killed by magicians.
Getting the style books to Mazul has helped tremendously. She was able to use up a lot of the style material that has been clogging the bank.
Posted by: hazmick Sep 17 2016, 05:07 PM
The sneak attacks are usually because people are doing contracts for the dark brotherhood. The not-so-sneaky attacks are just random violence that usually ends up with PCs being taken out by guards.
Daily quests are quests that one completes on a daily basis tongue.gif You find them on quest boards in DLC zones, and it'll either be a quest to clear a specific delve or take on a specific world boss. Completing them rewards players with top-end loot.
That sounds like something Jerric would do to amuse himself while Darnand is distracted! laugh.gif
There are achievements for killing NPCs, so maybe players are going on murder sprees for that purpose. Plus now there's the Dark Brotherhood, and I don’t know what NPC deaths could be linked to those quests. I just wish the dead NPCs would disappear before their replacements respawn. I often see NPCs standing on top of their dead predecessors. Oh, and I've seen players slaughtering livestock, too. I guess everyone has their own kind of fun! ohmy.gif
The daily quests that Jerric does can be picked up from bulletin boards in specific locations, much like the boards that give you crafting writs. There is one in Anvil near where The Count's Arms will be in the times of the Oblivion Crisis, but on the other side of the circle. There is also a board in the Kvatch market square outside the bank. They send you to locations like world bosses and delves that you can reach on your own, but there are likely to be other players there to help since their quest also sent them there.
To level up some more before questing I'd suggest just walking around and checking out all of the locations that you find. Even go back through the ones you've already explored. Everything you kill in your level's area and above gives you experience, which levels you up. Also it helps to wear a piece or two of gear with the Training trait, even if it is not the best quality for your level. That gives you more experience per kill.
Lildereth ran into trouble because her adventuring is mostly about sneaking around and NOT killing things, which does not level you. She goes back through dungeons and such multiple times in her areas between quests.
EDIT: D'oh, ninja'd! biggrin.gif It takes me too long to post, lol.
Posted by: haute ecole rider Sep 17 2016, 05:56 PM
Okay, that makes sense about the random killings. I rather suspected they were related to the DB. Not likely to be something Julian or Mazul would get into. A different character in a different zone, though . . .
As for the daily quests, it looks like that won't be anything Julian or Mazul would be doing anytime soon. We haven't yet encountered or made any friends other than Buffy the Small or Bubba Khan, so group quests are more or less out for us.
But that's okay, because now Mazul has made it her personal mission to bash as many Lurchers, Red Rook Bandits and Bloodthorn Assassins as she can. It will help greatly with her leveling. As for Julian, she has a tendency to collect unfinished quests and get ahead of herself, so I'm hoping pausing daily to do the crafting writs will help her slow down and take her time.
Now it's time for me to head off to work. Day two of the iPhone 7 launch. Or should I call it 7-Day +1?
Outside of crafted "Sets" the only enchantments you can put on armor are bonuses to magicka; health; and stamina. You can (however) enchant your two rings and necklace with something that will shield you from spells to a certain percentage depending on your equipment level.
If you want the glyphs, I will make them for you and send them in the game mail; you can put them on any rings and necklaces you are wearing and they will work:
QUOTE
Right click on the item of jewelry; find "Enchant" on the drop down list. Click on it. A window will open up that shows available glyphs you can use on that item. Choose the glyph you want and click on it, then click on "Accept" or "Okay," whichever it says.
You can enchant them while equipped or while in your inventory. You can use any jewelry you pick up in a dungeon; but you want jewelry at the closest level to your character so you can get the more powerful leveled enchantments.
You have to have skill points in Enchanting to make the proper glyphs at any level higher than the base level (Base level is for equipment under level 10). Plus more skill points added to use the more powerful runes.
The Enchanting shops sell base level glyphs; but I can give you a more powerful glyph for your level than they will; or that you can make yourself at this point; (pending you growing up that skill).
Guild stores do have glyphs the same strength as I can make them, but they are costly; whereas I am free. If you want them, just PM me your character's levels and their ring and necklace levels and I don't mind making them at all.
On the armor "Sets" - they just require you "know" (have researched) a certain number of traits. The set I just made for Buffy required knowing 5 traits, but it shields her from a whopping amount of spells or physical damage.
Not a good idea; because when they level up, so will the enemy. If you are having trouble doing a quest, you need to build up your strength, not your levels. Good armor sets and spend some skill points in making your character stronger (find some sky shards and spend your points in your passives to toughen up your character). You should find one or two good defensive spells early on, then spend time building your passives up - they strengthen the character early on while the enemies are still lower level.
OTOH, I did see one PC riding his horse in tight circles around another NPC who was reading his scroll (Map? Journal?). Made me think of Jerric and Darnand! laugh.gif laugh.gif
That sounds like something Jerric would do to amuse himself while Darnand is distracted! laugh.gif
**Oh, and I've seen players slaughtering livestock, too. I guess everyone has their own kind of fun! ohmy.gif
My friend Aussie that I have played with this past year does that to me all the time, even on foot she runs figure 8's around Misa, laugh.gif
On the slaughtering livestock = that is an achievement, lol. There was an achievement like that on Betty Netches too that I refused to take part in, but now that they have put rawhide & grease in the netches ... well, I have started hunting them for their hides and grease, lol. (so finally did get that achievement)
Only if she's in DLC zones. Enemy levels stay the same in normal zones (until One Tamriel arrives) so over-levelling still works.
As for the Fighters Guild daily quests - They're in Cyrodiil and give rewards of gold and exp (normal xp and guild xp). Levelling your Fighters Guild skill is easy peasy - you just have to kill Daedra and undead.
I wonder if it is worth the skill point, how much guild XP you will get as compared to just taking down Daedra in the Dolmans - because Misa and Calia both hit the Dolmans pretty hard; and Misa has every one for Ebonheart Pact and Cyrodiil and several numerous times - has completed the FG questline; plus uses the crossbow on both hot bars. Her Fighters Guild level seems stuck on 9.
Considering the daily quests take you into enemy territory in Cyrodiil, I'd say that they're not worth bothering with. Dolmens aren't too good, since there aren't that many enemies. Your best bet might just be to run around Coldharbour and kill everything in sight.
So Buffy had a technical problem today. She was fighting on the deck of a ship and used her knockback bow shot. Her morphed version of this not only knocks a foe away but pushes her back as well. A couple times we’ve had problems with this. If she is at the top of the stairs or on the edge of a cliff or surrounded by a lethal magical barrier of â€touch me and you die’ then getting herself pushed back can be problematic.
Well, sure enough, she got pushed back into the interior of the ship – literally through the wall like a glitch of being stuck inside a rock and couldn’t get out! She tried the unstuck command but that was disallowed (combat). She exited the game but when she came back she was in the exact same spot. She couldn't find any way to damage herself enough to die. So I send a tech report to Zenimax and exited.
Talking with mALX about it here, she suggested that we both go in game and that I try traveling to her. We didn't know if that would work 'in combat' or not. Well, when I logged back in, Buffy was safely out of her predicament. I attributed that to a quick response by Zenimax to my report. Calia and Buffy did get to play some together, clearing a dungeon and closing a dark anchor together.
I was so unhappy with that knockback morph that I then went to Elden Root and respec’d her skills. She’s level 33 and it cost 3300 gold (likely 100 gold per level?). Anyway, the respec worked fine and her spare skill points went from 6 to 13. Regarding the knockback morph, we took the other option. This one still knocks back the targeted foe but heals you instead of pushing you away from the foe. We then tested the new morph in a dungeon and it works wonderfully. I’m much happier with that one.
Once back out of the game again I found a very nice e-mail waiting for me from Zenimax saying how they fixed Buffy’s stuck problem and that if things were not working okay to let them know. Very nice and I sent them a thank you e-mail.
So. . . somewhere in all this ramble is what I learned about the bow skill Scatter Shot - that the Draining Shot morph is much better for Buffy than the Magnum Shot. I also learned how respec works (very well). And finally, I was impressed by Zenimax customer support.
Posted by: hazmick Sep 18 2016, 04:31 AM
Haa-Rei uses that healing morph for it too - so handy!
Glad to hear that Buffy's problem was fixed quickly.
Posted by: Grits Sep 18 2016, 04:54 AM
Lildereth is also a fan of Draining Shot. She misses having it on her bar while she is still leveling.
Great to hear that Zenimax was so responsive, and I'm glad that Buffy and Calia could turn the accident into a chance to get together! happy.gif
So what do folks think about attribute distribution?
I've no idea if we're doing things right but this is the thinking for Buffy:
Every level up attribute point goes into stamina. Given her weapon and skills, this produces impressive damage.
She seeks gear that has +health. After all, health 'resists all'.
Her natural magicka with no boost at all is plenty to power Spike and the few actual magicka skills she uses.
Part of me wonders if going with pure health for attribute points and gear for stamina would be better for two possible reasons.
1. Health gets bigger gains per attribute point than the other attributes.
2. The concept would allow a character to switch from a stamina build to a magicka build by changing gear and skills instead of having to also respec attributes.
Or. . . is some combo of allocating attribute points better?
I'm not so much asking for Buffy's case specifically, but wondering what type of thinking others with more experience have found to be helpful.
Posted by: hazmick Sep 23 2016, 10:25 PM
If Buffy's set up works for you and Buffy, then I'd say that that's doing it right.
Personally I have everything in stamina - attribute points and enchantments - for Haa-Rei. We also use provisioning to give us a little boost (to both health and stamina). We're currently in the middle of getting new gear sets so the enchantments might change to boost anything that feels off. We spend all our time in the CP160 zones and have no problems with any regular enemies or delve bosses.
With Ciri I have more of a mix, since I'm still experimenting with the Templar skills. For every 5 points we put into the magicka attribute, we put 1 into health. I'm not sure how effective this is yet, and I'll have to wait until she has maximum available attribute points to see for sure. She's only level 21 so it won't make much of a difference for a while yet.
My opinion is that it all depends on your class. The only classes that really need health are tanks, and even then they don't need that much extra. I'd say it's better to invest in either magicka or stamina (not both) and put that into some good buff/shield/healing skills.
EDIT: Champion Points and gear sets can also change things up a lot so it's always worth looking into all that.
Posted by: Acadian Sep 23 2016, 11:55 PM
Thanks, hazmick. That is encouraging news so I'll keep doing generally what we're doing for now. Buffy is level 38 and doing very well as long as she doesn't charge into things.
Oh, once you reach level 50, how do attribute points accrue? The stuff I read on that seems a bit vague.
Posted by: haute ecole rider Sep 24 2016, 01:18 AM
Why oh why can't I find a damn carrot to save my eyes??
Julian has had a provisioning writ since forever because she needs to make carrot soup. Yet we've been all over Glenumbra and a good chunk of Stormhaven searching every damn crate and barrel and have yet to find any. Mazul has had no luck, too - she helped earlier by collecting blessed thistle for Julian. But no go this time. Ugh!
I miss being able to buy the ingredients from the merchants!
I've wondered A LOT about the best way to distribute these, and couldn't ever flgure out a good solution (so ended up bringing them all up pretty much evenly; though my stamina missed a few upgrades.
Can you go into more detail about what you said here? (Bold above)
Acadian - Not too sure about the way attribute points work with the Champion Point system. Haa-Rei got to max level under the old Veteran Rank system which gave an Attribute point with every veteran rank (there were 16 vet ranks). I assume you get 1 point per 10 Champion points now.
It all makes sense once you get to level 50 though.
Haute - You can buy some ingredients from provisioners. Not sure if they'll have carrots but it might be worth a try.
MALX, on the attribute points - If you put a level up point into stam or mag you get an increase of 111 respectively. If you put that same point into health, you get an increase of 121. UESPwiki says this, I see it in game when I level up and someone on the ESO forum was talking about the theoretical advantage of points into health and using gear for your stam/mag.
I just checked in game as Buffy leveled up. A point in stam or mag would give her +111. A point in health shows it would give her +122. They must have upped it by one at some point.
haute, I wish we were on the same server. Jerric would send a whole crate of carrots! You can buy them from the NPC grocer vendors, they are something like 150 gold (!!).
Acadian, I have had the most success with all attribute points into stamina or magicka for my DPS/solo characters. The balance for healer and tank roles is still a mystery to me.
In my 'second generation' group of characters I have put all points into either stamina or magicka depending on their focus, and none of them has ever died (yet). The characters I have had the most trouble getting through some solo quest content with are Jerric and Lil, both of whom have attribute points assigned in health and magicka as well as stamina.
I am still experimenting, but so far in my experience making the character strong in their damage attribute (magicka or stamina) and using enchantments and food/drink to boost what they need at in their current situation has worked best for me. (None of my second gen group has used Jerric's Champion Points yet, because they have not needed them.)
With Jerric I have found that when fighting the huge world bosses with multiple other players (not "Grouped" with them, just whoever shows up to the fight) he has enough health to survive most of the weird boss damage effects when he gets caught in them, but he sometimes can't deal enough damage to get loot from the boss. As far as I can tell you have to deal at least 10% of the damage, otherwise no loot. In those cases other players are doing more damage faster than he does. (This will change to 3% in the next update, which is great news for tanks and healers.) This makes me think that he would be better off with more points into stamina for base damage, then add either more damage with stamina gear or more defense with health gear, depending on the situation.
Under the current leveling system you get attribute points when you level up only through level 50. On some level-ups you get more than one attribute point. I forget exactly which ones, but it brings you to the same total that everyone got by leveling to Veteran 160 under the previous system. So when you are level 50 you are finished "leveling" and you will have all of the attribute points that you will get. (You can still get more skill points through quests, Skyshards, and some Alliance War thing.)
After level 50 you earn Champion Points to spend on various passives in the CP constellations. The CP system is awesome and allows very specific character development. That could be a whole thread unto itself! laugh.gif
Posted by: Acadian Sep 24 2016, 04:50 PM
Thanks very much, Grits. That is encouraging to realize that Buffy's intuitive approach of heavy stamina for damage may be wise after all. We have the numbers for damage done on so we can see her damage floating off foes with each hit and she does crank out some pretty impressive numbers (I think) for her level.
Gosh, baby Buffy's up to level 39 already and still doing well. She explores and quests quite methodically so always seems to be ~5 levels above the recommended levels for the quests she gets. There is just so much to do that by the time she gets to everything she is a bit overleveled. I have to think that is sort of self-correcting since if you are too high a level you will get less xp I guess.
Posted by: Grits Sep 24 2016, 05:26 PM
Acadian, exactly. You will always get xp for completing quests, but the xp you get for killing lower level foes will drop by certain percentages as you out-level them.
For example if Buffy helps close the dolman that's right outside Vulkhel Guard while she's at level 39, she will not get a loot chest or xp for killing the level 7ish daedra there but she will get xp for closing the dolmen. Also the lower-level daedra she kills will still count toward various achievements, even though she did not get xp for killing them.
The bad thing about being slightly over-leveled is the loot you get is a bit low for you. Not a problem if you are crafting your own gear.
This will all change with the next update. That's why I'm so excited for it. Jerric will be able to go back through the whole world and fight things again. No more "wasted" areas where everything dies in one hit and treasure is useless to you. viking.gif
Congrats on Buffy's growth! I think the high-stamina/high-damage approach is as close to a glass cannon as you can get and still survive walking around in ESO-world. biggrin.gif
Posted by: haute ecole rider Sep 24 2016, 05:43 PM
Ever since Julian hit I think it was Level 15 we've been getting random Daedra and Daedric monsters dropping out of some miniature portal in the sky. Usually we fight two or three waves, then the mini-portal disappears. We're out on our own with no one else around. It's almost like it's a challenge from the Daedric princes . . .
Has anyone else had this experience?
Posted by: Acadian Sep 24 2016, 06:08 PM
Thanks, Grits.
Rider - Yes, they are called Dark Fissures and are as you you describe them. Here is a bit more detail from the UESPwiki:
'A Dark Fissure in Elder Scrolls Online is a small version of a Dark Anchor that appear at set locations in the world with a difficulty level intended for solo completion. Three enemies may spawn when you approach the fissure's location. If you defeat these three then two more enemies will spawn, one of them being a higher difficulty level. Defeating these two will reward you with a small amount of experience points. Typically you will also find a superior or epic item as loot from one of the enemies.'
Buffy has good luck with them because she keeps her distance as she kills the first (easier) wave, then immediately crouches and backs away a bit. That way she can surprise the second wave instead of having them drop on her head. tongue.gif
So after reading all the discussions about attribute points, Mazul and I decided to focus our points on Stamina for damage and Magicka for the spells she loves to use as Dragonknight, and use enchantments and food/drink buffs for Health.
That means we need to ask Julian (who is working on her enchanting skills) to craft some Health Glyphs for Mazul's new steel armor.
Mazul has asked a question: If she enchants a piece of armor, can she continue to improve it? Or is it done?
Posted by: Acadian Sep 26 2016, 03:07 AM
You can enchant over an enchanted item no problem. Just right click on it and select enchant.
A couple considerations:
1. Your old enchantment (glyph) will be destroyed.
2. You can't use a glyph that is higher level than the item you are enchanting. That is, you can't enchant a level 34 item with a level 35 glyph.
Edit:
Oops. I think I misunderstood you. Yes, you can improve an enchanted item at the workbench - like take if from blue to purple.
Two questions of my own:
1. Buffy is high stamina, low magicka. Is she gimping Spike the clannfear due her her relatively low magicka? Magicka makes magicka spells do more damage so is her lower magicka pool hurt his damage or durability?
2. Weapon damage. Any thoughts on which is generally more helpful between +weapon damage, +critical hit chance and +stamina (for stamina-based weapon users)?
Not sure about the first point. Summons go off your level but they might go off magicka too. I'll investigate the next time I'm in the game.
Point 2: Well I'd say that crit chance is pretty handy when you get abilities that heal you on crits, and weapon damage is always good to boost if you can. Stamina is pretty important since it boosts damage, lets you use more abilities, helps you break out of snares etc. I don't think any are more or less helpful, since they're all helpful in different ways.
If you look at some of the end-game gear sets, for example http://elderscrollsonline.wiki.fextralife.com/Flanking+Strategist+Set and http://elderscrollsonline.wiki.fextralife.com/Briarheart+Set, you'll notice that they have a combination of boosts rather than focusing all on one.
I've been torn on which is better for a Mundus Stone choice between Shadow (Increases Critical Strike damage by 12%) and Thief (Increases Critical Strike chance by 11%).
I keep falling back on the Shadow because I can feel a loss in power when I go to the Thief; but everyone says being able to get the critical hits in more often is better and just increase your crit damage in some other way (like enchanted jewelry, etc).
Which would you prefer between the two, and why? (if you have ever thought about the two, and wouldn't mind my asking?)
It all depends on what bonuses you already have. If you have a gear set that gives you more crit chance then you'd take the crit damage stone and vice versa. If I had to choose between chance and damage I'd probably go for damage since attacks like Volley almost guarantee a critical hit (and the healing that comes with it). A class with fewer/slower attacks might benefit more from crit chance.
1. Regarding magicka and clannfear damage/sustainability, I can't tell. Darnand (mag-sorc) keeps his healed so he won't have to re-cast, and my stam-Sorc keeps his healed because he is using the heal for himself. Neither of their clannfears seems to do much damage, but they are very useful little tanks. wub.gif For context, both of these characters are adventuring in areas above their level, so it may just be that their clannfears are too under-leveled for me to notice a difference in their damage output. I'm curious about this, too.
2. I think that working out the balance here for mostly solo PvE play depends not only on your build but how you specifically play it. For example, Jerric needs a big stamina bank and fast stamina recovery for all of the roll dodge (for damage and crowd control) and shield bashing that he does, while another player with the same bar might get more from criticals. The best thing to do is what you are doing, pay close attention and experiment while Buffy is leveling, and when she gets her favorite skills together look at her as a whole including passives, traits, standing stones, the works for balance. Once she hits level 50 she will be able to use her Champion Points to fill in as well. Potions can play a big role here, too, and give you flexibility going into different situations.
When you find discussions online make sure that they are not only up-to-date but also that the context is relevant to what you are doing. PvP and end-game group content builds are going to answer different needs than the solo PvE player's. Also a person who plays with a lot of players around or with a group will have a vastly different experience from someone who clears dungeons alone due to playing mostly at off times
Posted by: Acadian Sep 26 2016, 01:33 PM
Thanks for the thoughts and opinions, folks.
I must say that Buffy is rather addicted to stamina and actually share's Jerric's need for a large stam pool. She has transformed since Ob/Sky from a rather immobile sniper into a very capable medium range nimble bow dancer. She can literally circle foes with death by shoot, dodge-roll, shoot, dodge-roll, shoot... and her stam pool means she can keep this up all day. So after reading the responses and thinking about it, stam gives her several advantages (including more damage) so I think she'll tend to somewhat favor that approach.
Regarding the magnificent savior that Buffy calls Spike, he has never killed much from the beginning and that has not changed. But by Akatosh he is one tough little tank as Grits pointed out. Buffy has the morph to heal him & her but mostly uses it for her. Spike doesn't survive every big fight but he certainly comes through most of them, allowing Buffy to do her job. So I think my concern is his durability as Buffy keeps leveling. She is currently L41 and Spike is doing as well as ever. He's been knocked on his tail by daedroth and an instant later is right back in their face doing his job. wub.gif
This is super important. Any information pre-2016 is way out of date, and the game has changed a lot since then. I saw a thread yesterday from 2014 that was talking about how terrible stamina builds are!
Acadian - I had Haa-Rei test out the Clannfear with and without magicka attributes. The only thing that changes is the Clannfear's attack damage. Healing stays the same. The Clannfear's health scales off your character's level, not magicka attribute.
Without any attribute points in magicka the Clannfear does 305 + 30% damage.
With 64 attribute points in magicka the Clannfear does 579 + 30% damage.
Regarding the magnificent savior that Buffy calls Spike, he has never killed much from the beginning and that has not changed. But by Akatosh he is one tough little tank as Grits pointed out. That's what I've observed, too, watching other players to get ideas.
What Julian and Mazul have found is it's best to get the first strike in, and to keep moving. Watch for the power attacks from the other guys and move out of the red zone. Julian spams her Siphon at these times, and Mazul sets up for the power attack with her greatsword (aka claymore). Oh, and if we encounter an enemy who uses those summonable Totems, we attack the Totem first. A couple of blows usually demolishes it and makes the enemy (all bosses, so far) significantly weaker. Then we hammer at them with Funnel Health (Julian) or Obsidian Fist (Mazul) until they're stunned or paralyzed, then use our weapons in a power attack.
Mazul is focusing on collecting items/armor that up her Health points. Before the last few boss fights, she's taken the time to down a few food/drink items to boost her health and magicka. It seems to be working well for her at this point.
Thanks! I'll take that as good news since his primary function is to tank, not kill. That his health is not related to magicka is great then. The small advantage to his damage is a minor thing to file away if I ever do a magicka sorc (staves).
Thanks very much!
I've been torn on which is better for a Mundus Stone choice between Shadow (Increases Critical Strike damage by 12%) and Thief (Increases Critical Strike chance by 11%).
I keep falling back on the Shadow because I can feel a loss in power when I go to the Thief; but everyone says being able to get the critical hits in more often is better and just increase your crit damage in some other way (like enchanted jewelry, etc).
Which would you prefer between the two, and why? (if you have ever thought about the two, and wouldn't mind my asking?)
It all depends on what bonuses you already have. If you have a gear set that gives you more crit chance then you'd take the crit damage stone and vice versa. If I had to choose between chance and damage I'd probably go for damage since attacks like Volley almost guarantee a critical hit (and the healing that comes with it). A class with fewer/slower attacks might benefit more from crit chance.
Oh, now that makes a lot of sense! Thank you!
Two questions of my own:
1. Buffy is high stamina, low magicka. Is she gimping Spike the clannfear due her her relatively low magicka? Magicka makes magicka spells do more damage so is her lower magicka pool hurt his damage or durability?
2. Weapon damage. Any thoughts on which is generally more helpful between +weapon damage, +critical hit chance and +stamina (for stamina-based weapon users)?
According to this discussion on Reddit, it is possible (since the summons is based on magicka and not stamina) but you can enchant a ring or necklace with spell power to balance it out. Did I not make you one already? Or was that weapon power?
Anyway, the jewelry should be leveled up when you level up your armor; so your enchantment can be brought up to the proper level for your use.
More newb questions. . . enchantments and such that increase weapon damage vs increase spell damage.
It seems pretty clear that stamina-based weapons gain from +weapon damage and magicka-based spells gain from +spell damage. Even a blond elf gets that. tongue.gif
Which boosts-stamina based-spells/abilities like Hurricane?
Which boosts-magicka based weapons (staves)?
Whatever logic is at work, I assume it would carry over to +weapon crit and +spell crit. I guess.
Edit:
Gosh, hazmick, your screen of the month is so cool (pun intended). I love that Nord in the wolven headress – it looks so very much like it belongs right there in Skyrim! happy.gif
Grits, your screen of the month is great as well. It seems odd to not see Jerric fishing. Buffy doesn’t fish but when she encounters worms, guts and other things that remind her of Jerric – oh, wait, that didn’t sound right – she can’t help but pick them up in the hope that someday she’ll be able to gift him with a barrel full of assorted bait. laugh.gif I guess some farmer was clever enough to beer-entice Jerric to turn his swords into plowshares for a time?
I have a newb question of my own: regarding the riding lessons.
I've already seen how buying storage lessons increase one's own stamina. But do the speed and stamina lessons do the same for the player? Or do they only affect the horse so that it is more durable, faster, etc?
The reason I ask is because Blanco just got a set of saddlebags!
Oh, and Lvl 24 (almost 25 now) Julian is at Lvl 30 in her Provisioning skill. She is so damn good she makes me hungry whenever we stop at a cooking fire. Yummy!
Mazul is taking a break while Julian gets started in Rivenspire. For now, I think Mazul wants to level up in Glenumbra with enemies she knows, before taking on any more Supernal Dreamers in Stormhaven. She did find out that Dremora Churls are easy meat for her - badda bing, badda boom, BAM! (the last bit said a lá Emeril) But the mortals themselves are harder.
If I recall correctly, Julian had to do the same thing, too, when she first entered Stormhaven.
Drinks do not stack. If you drink one after another, the second cancels out the first's effects.
Not sure on the food, but - check the effects of two different effect foods and eat one of each; then hit "C" and scroll to the bottom to see your active effects. That will give you your answer.
On the saddle bags, your horse gains different armors depending on what you sink your gold into training him for.
Adding to carry capacity adds saddlebags after 20 training sessions. The character gets the benefit of that because you can't go in and out of your horse to store items since they disappear when you dismount.
If you train for stamina, after 20 "training sessions" the armor the horse gets is a metal faceplate (which, like your helmet you can hide when you see how hideous your pretty horse looks in it). The stamina gives your horse extra hit points, so if an enemy strikes the horse and you try to flee instead of dismounting = the horse can take more hits than just one before rearing up and dumping you off. I think right now my horse can take 5-6 hefty hits before dumping me off and heading for the stables; so a good portion of the time I can flee a fight while riding cross-country.
Training for Speed gives your horse a fancy armor over his rump after 20 "training sessions" (under the saddlebags) - the horse moves noticeably faster. It does not effect the Player character's speed.
To increase your speed, I would guess Stamina enchantments. If you go to Cyrodiil you can spend one skill point in "Rapid Maneuver" and cast a spell to move faster if escaping.
Here is a screen of a horse with all three "armor" upgrades from the training:
I think you are right, that the "Weapon Damage" enchantment helps stamina based spells; and the "Increase Spell Damage" enchantment effects magic based spells. (my guess).
Posted by: hazmick Oct 3 2016, 01:13 AM
Acadian - Yep, just double checked on the wiki - spell damage affects magicka based weapons and abilities, weapon damage affects stamina based stuff.
Haute - Speed and stamina upgrades only affect the mounts for the character that bought the upgrades. They don't affect the character or the mounts of other characters.
I'm 99% sure that food and drink effects don't stack.
Posted by: haute ecole rider Oct 3 2016, 01:19 AM
I know that the riding lessons (Speed, Stamina, and Storage) only affect the PC that is taking them. Mazul started behind Julian and her storage/inventory reflected that. But thanks to the riding lessons, they are now pretty close in their inventory slots.
Thanks, hazmick, for the answers. Acadian and I were chatting in game about that and he said if anyone knew, you would! That's why I thought I'd post on here . . .
and one more question: I have the Wolf's Tooth Necklace taking up space in Mazul's inventory. She wants to get rid of it, but I'm too cautious to let her do so.
It's a trophy, and collecting various trophies completes achievements (which can be found in your character's journal). I think on the PC version there should be an option to 'use' or activate the item to check it off the achievement list. The only reward for completing the achievement is 10 achievement points (which have no use in the game).
I like to keep trophies, since Haa-Rei always collects stuff (Dwemer cutlery in Morrowind, minotaur horns in Oblivion, sabre cat teeth in Skyrim) but if Mazul wants to sell the necklace and you're not bothered about achievements then there's no reason not to.
Does this mean if you sell it that you won't get the achievement? Because those things take up room in inventory, I thought you could sell them and still retain the achievement. They can't be activated or put into the bank; can't be sold to guild stores; only merchant NPCs.
I'm pretty sure you get the achievement just from picking it up, so selling shouldn't be a problem, but I've read a few threads on the forums about the trophies not being recognised straight away (or not at all). You can check your achievement progress in the journal, so you can see which trophies have been marked as 'collected' and sell them.
I actually didn't know about this (dye colors for achievements) for quite a while, I'm just an achievement hound. I blame XBox 360 for that, they drove me to wanting to gain achievements while playing, lol.
That is the truth. I never even wanted to play an evil character in Fallout 3, but they had an achievement on the 360 that you could get for reaching certain stages of the game as an evil, good, and neutral character. I just had to do it, just to get that achievement, laugh.gif
You should have gotten an email when you bought or registered your game with an invitation to join the forums through a link.
If your invitation link is gone, perhaps email customer support and explain you need a new invitation?
About crowns.
Is there a way to get them besides buying packages? It says Khajiit has 500 crowns already without actually doing anything besides purchasing the game.
You'd get 1500 Crowns a month while your subscription is running.
I might get that just for the crafting bag, but only for a while. Not indefinitely . . .
For Xbox One monthly only is available. For PS4 and PC/Mac you can get 1 month, three months or six months. All also have auto renewal options. The six month package is the best value - it saves you about US $2 per month.
$15/month doesn't seem too bad, especially since it gets you crowns to use, which themselves seem kind of pricey.
I have ESO+ renewable each 6 months and love it. It costs $78 / 6 months and gives me 9500 crowns / 6 months. I also don't have to buy any DLC since all of them (past, present, future) come with ESO+. The crafting bag (unique to ESO+) is, in my opinion, priceless. There are some other smaller perks like the ability to dye costumes (not just outfits) and a permanent 10% xp gain.
That all said, I'd wait on ESO+ just a bit. Get the basic game (without DLC) going and play it a week or so. By then, you'll know if you like it or not. If you like it after giving it a fair shot of playing it, then consider ESO+. Within a few days, I was impressed. Within two weeks I decided it would be Buffy's new home.
If offered in game, it would be very pricey in terms of in-game gold. If offered in the Crown Store it would cost 2/3 of the diff between basic ESO and the Gold edition. So if you like the horse, it is reasonable. If you end up not getting ESO+, those DLC will remain quite a bargain as well.
Enjoy!
Khajiit will probably still check into + if nothing else but for the crowns. Future DLC will probably come with + too right?
Yes, ESO+ means you automatically get all DLC, including any new ones as they come out.
New question:
One Tamriel is active right?
Posted by: Acadian Nov 30 2016, 04:33 AM
Yes, One Tamriel is active and, as far as I'm concerned, working pretty well. I like the flexibility it provides in traveling anywhere and having all areas magically provide an appropriate challenge regardless of your level.
So Khajiit hasn't even made it out of CharGen yet. How do you overturn the Alliance you have to pick at the beginning?
Posted by: Acadian Nov 30 2016, 05:03 AM
If I understand your question, you cannot. If you are a Khajiit for example, you will be in the Aldmeri Dominion. An exception would be if you buy the Adventurers Pack - then you can pick any alliance for any race in chargen.
Your alliance does not stop you from traveling to other alliance lands.
If you complete your alliance's questline, you will then be given the opportunity to go do the other two alliance questlines if you like.
Did you mean override?
You need the Adventurer's Pack for that.
I just got it in the Crown Store today. Haven't used it yet, but I like the idea of starting different races in alternate locations besides the usual standard ones.
Ooooh ok. Khajiit was under the impression that you could pick whatever alliance you wanted with One Tamriel. Hmmm, this one is going to want that Adventurer Pack. Khajiit thinks it will open up more RP stories.
I do think that is the case with One Tamriel, but I'm not sure.
I just know that when I started playing ESO, choosing Redguard or Orsimer put me in Daggerfall.
But the Adventurer Pack is supposed to let you play any race any Alliance.
I just got it for the bantam guar. Alise wanted it. I had the Crowns. So . . .
Sandor Castius did a bit of hunting around Glemumbra. Came across a few bandits and their pesky traps, who were keeping some nobles prisoner.
Irvana is having a hard time leveling up. She became a vampire at level 3 and she's level 4 now. I have five skill points to use and I wanted to invest them in her vampire abilities but it hardly even levels up! sad.gif
Is there any tricks to leveling them up? I haven't played either Werewolf or Vampire yet, but the internet might have some leveling tips.
With the other bar types, just keeping the bar active when you turn in a quest is what levels up what is on the bar. So every time you turn in a quest or make a kill while your vampire bar is active might level it up.
Posted by: Darkness Eternal Nov 30 2016, 05:41 PM
Well werewolf is easy to level up. All you have to do is turn and go about.
vampures are harder since I just learned you're character level up normally but since I am very low level it takes time.
Yes you can buy them. For both of my characters I was turned by players. Irvana's turn was actually hilarious. She was looking for a vampire ritual site where you can be turned. She was led there by a non-vampire woman who told me wait and in no time she would be turned. Right as she said it a pale muscular fellow(another player) and bit my character and the woman said, "See. There you go."
The other way is getting infected by certain enemy NPC's that spawn once a week in certain places.
So how does smithing work and how are "motifs" from the crown store related?
Posted by: Acadian Dec 1 2016, 04:23 AM
Blacksmithing can seem a bit intimidating at first. Here is one of the better guides on it that should give you a good feel for it: http://tamrieljournal.com/crafting-and-professions/blacksmithing/
Regarding the styles or motifs, each of the ES races has a style. You start the game knowing the style for your race. To learn the other races, you find (as occasional loot) stylebooks for them as you play. You can (if you have more crowns than time) buy the knowledge to craft these other styles in the Crown Store as well as the knowledge to craft other more exotic styles.
Hope that gets you a good start. Woodworking (bows, staves, shields) and Clothing (cloth and leather armor) work very similarly to Blacksmithing.
One tip most players endorse is that if your character plans on doing any of those three crafts, begin researching traits early. The reason is that as you learn more traits for an item, continuing to learn more takes longer and longer.
... This one wants to play a Khajiit but he does not want to be in the Aldmeri Dominion ...
I don't want to presume on your reasons but let me offer this. Buffy came from the game Skyrim and quite disliked the Aldmeri Dominion. She also had reservations our first time in ESO being in that Alliance. But as a Bosmer, that's what she did. She absolutely fell in love with it. The Dominion is at a key point in its history early on and the prospective queen is a heroine that anyone can easily admire for her beautiful vision for the Dominion. That history ultimately thwarted her vision does not detract from what she was trying to do. Bottom line is Buffy felt a strong connection to the Dominion and loved being part of it.
For our second start, we used the Adventurers Pack and started her as a Bosmer in the Ebonheart Pact to try something different. We are currently 80% through that Alliance's quest line and, compared to the Dominion, it is simply doing quests. We feel no connection or much interest in the cause of the Ebonheart Pact.
All of this is very subjective of course and just one elf's opinion. Nevertheless, I thought I would share my experience for your consideration.
I will say that your race seems to have little or no impact on reactions. NPCs do not seem wired to respond any differently regardless of your race.
Hmm, interesting. This one must admit that Skyrim has tainted his view on the Dominion and the Altmer in general. Khajiit has never liked the Altmer, but learning about "The Great War" in Skyrim, along with the despicable way most of them act in game made that dislike a bit stronger. Perhaps with TES:O I will play as an Altmer some time to try and gain some understanding. Also, their gear aesthetic is really cool!
I started a character in each province to get a taste of all three and pick for myself which one I preferred. I have a character in the Aldmeri Dominion, one in the Daggerfall Covenant, and a few in the Ebonheart Pact because overall I liked it the best before One Tamriel. (in One Tamriel patch they took the gorgeous fishing spot I loved and extended the Red Mountain so it takes over double the area it used to, grrrrr.) Ebonheart has the Blackmarsh though, which is terrifying and dangerous to me. (Acadian and Buffy LOVED the Blackmarsh region!)
The Aldmeri is the most gorgeous of the three, but has two provinces that are jungle areas that are terrifying and dangerous - scared me to death! But Acadian (and Buffy) LOVE those jungles!
I loved the look of every bit of the land for the Daggerfall Covenant; most especially the Desert region - but it was loaded with werewolves. The hair on the back of my neck stayed raised the whole time never knowing when I would see one hurtling at me - they are VERY fast. But Haute has two characters there and LOVES it !!!
So each person has their own favorite spot.
Ebonheart Pact is Morrowind and Skyrim. I see so many familiar places from the older TES games I've played - I love it best; but still love many parts of the other two Alliances, especially the Queen you help that Acadian spoke of - she is so easy to care about; and very beautiful.
But this game stuck like glue to the TES lore; so Altmer are (and always have been in the TES realm throughout all the games) snobbish and uppity acting toward all the other races in Tamriel - that is Lore, and so you will hear it in this game too.
You can look up in the Imperial Library online and read about each race and their quirks or traits; appearances; etc. - and that is how you will find them in this game. They have it set so the Altmer's heights can't be adjusted smaller than any other race; the hair colors can't be adjusted to what doesn't match the Lore for that race.
I actually wish they would lighten up on that a bit so we could make our characters to suit our own personal idea of what we want, but they have literally stuck to the Lore in every way in this game. So expect haughty Altmer, lol.
But you can start anywhere and travel to any other Province you want, though it is always best to experience your own Alliance first (there is no hard and fast rule on that anymore since the One Tamriel patch).
Also, because you are allowed 8 characters at any given time and can delete 3 per day = feel free to experiment and find your own niche in the game.
Posted by: ghastley Dec 2 2016, 03:52 PM
Also don't confuse the Aldmeri Dominion of Skyrim's era with this previous instance. The term Thalmor may also crop up meaning a totally different set of people. Both terms were appropriated to take advantage of their heritage, even if it wasn't a genuine re-creation.
Posted by: Acadian Dec 2 2016, 04:16 PM
Buffy takes individuals as she finds them regardless of race and can quickly point out numerous examples of characters with beautiful hearts from each race. That said, the Altmer are well-represented by individuals that exude a bit of a superior/entitled air - that is exactly what the Dominion queen (herself an Altmer) is trying to overcome. I note in the Ebonheart Pact that many Dunmer are no less arrogantly condescending.
I don't mean any of this negatively; in fact I enjoy the quirks and characteristics of each race - and they are well-represented in ESO.
Same here, which is why the ones that offended my character with their superior attitude got a little retribution in my character's story, lol.
Oddly enough, the one Altmer character I created in Oblivion for a modding class turned out to be awesome and friendly; as did the Altmer girl I created in ESO! So I think the crappy attitude was a set-up by the developers to make people feel disgusted by certain races.
No, each bite that you buy from the crown store is only tied to the character that buys it. New characters will have to buy it again if they want to be a vampire or werewolf. (I just logged on and started a new character to confirm it)
It's also worth noting that buying a bite from the crown store means you miss out on a cool little quest, so unless you're starting as a vampire or werewolf for roleplaying purposes then I'd advise that you save your crowns and contract the disease naturally.
I don't know on the motifs. In game when you find a motif book, it is only good for one character. I'm very sure hazmick and mALX will know the answer about motifs that you can buy.
I think Imperials are a really well-balanced capable race and, although I've not played one, it seems like DKs are pretty tough and hit hard. So. . . such a choice seems like a very solid first char to help learn the game.
Yes, this was Khajiit's thought as well. The Imperials get a bonus to one handed weapons and shields.
So do the smithing "motifs" work the same way? You buy one and it's only good for one character?
Yep, I'm 99% sure that motifs bought from the crown store are only good for one character. Haven't bought one myself so I can't give you firsthand confirmation.
You can find most of the crown store motifs in the game anyway though, it just might take a while to find them.
Honestly I'd recommend NOT buying anything from the crown store that you can't get from exploring in game (i.e common motifs), because it's all pretty expensive and there are new mounts/pets/costumes every month that are much more worth your crowns.
I would focus (when it comes to race) on the attribute boosts. Boosts to a skill are not a big deal because if you use the skill alot it will go up to the max of 50 regardless. So having a boost to a skill is only an early game / temporary benefit. Attributes are finite however and limited.
Speaking of attributes, I recommend the following concept. Most of the big kids / elites on the official forum endorse it and I swear by it based on my own limited experience.
If your focus is damage primarily from melee/bow/stamina-powered abilities then focus on stamina since that boosts damage for those.
If your focus is damage primarily from staves/magicka-powered abilities then focus on magicka since that boosts damage for those.
If your focus is on healing (like mine), that comes from staves and magicka abilities and is boosted by magicka.
If your focus is on tanking (meaning unkillable but low damage) then focus on health.
When I say focus on one of those, I mean put every single attribute into that attribute. If that ability is not health, then you simply enchant some of your gear (season to taste) with enough health to survive at minimal expense to your damage or healing.
A magicka-based staff user, for example puts all points into magicka and enchants most of their gear with magicka - putting only enough hp on gear to avoid death. The more into magicka = the more damage (or healing for healers).
A stamina-based damage dealer does the same only with stamina as their primary.
If you do not focus extremely hard on one attribute your damage will be poor. It is only tanks who can focus on health and accept the consequences of low damage as their job is to hold/block/distract foes so the damage dealers can kill and the healers can heal/buff.
So if you're thinking a DK, decide if you want to be a stamina fueled damage dealer or a magicka fueled damage dealer or low damage massive health tank.
Note that any of the 4 classes can specialize in magicka for damage/healing, stamina for damage or health for tanking. If you're looking at the DK, decide if you want to be a StamDK or a MagDK and design the character accordingly regarding abilities, armor, weaponry.
I don't know on the motifs. In game when you find a motif book, it is only good for one character. I'm very sure hazmick and mALX will know the answer about motifs that you can buy.
As far as the motif books you find in game, some folks save their duplicates to give to other characters/players.
Once you get going on PC NA, let us know what your player name is so folks like mALX and I can try to 'friend' you.
Ok will do! Thinking about getting the Imperials and running a Dragonknight first.
Imperials are very strong and tough; I have three of them. Dragonknights are a very "In your face" fighter, but are some of the toughest in the game in a fight when it is against you. They have some terrific powers later on in your build too (like reflect damage).
I had one Dragonknight character, she was a total blast to play! Just be prepared to spend a lot on repairing armor till your skill level is raised enough for some of the better perks, because early on their spells are not ranged in combat (but are a ton of fun!)
They draw their power from the earth (meaning the ground) and one of the coolest things is that they can temporarily become a part of it in combat. You may notice your character appears to be made of mud for 30 seconds after combat, that is the power of the earth you have temporarily become a part of. It is very awesome, and their earthquake spells make you feel like a god throwing them. They are a blast to play!
That is exactly how I played it - I tried out each class and just played them by exploring until I found the one that suited me best (which for me was Nightblade) and settled down with it. My Misa is a strong contender in a fight, but not a powerhouse and could be stronger and more effective if I had followed a strategy like Acadian is talking about.
What I did was just explore how to build a character on my own rudimentary experimentation, which is fine early on. Later, when you are taking on veteran level stuff, it is not so good. I have to be carried through veteran dungeons by those I am with.
That said, if you love a character and don't want to just throw it out when you find a few mistakes in their build; then you always have the option in game of respec'ing them (attributes, skill points, or even just the optional upgrades of your skills) = and you can respec them as many times as you want to fork out the "in game gold" to respec your character.
(or you can buy respec scrolls from the Crown Store, but like Hazmick said = I don't buy anything from the Crown Store that I can get in game unless I'm just desperate to have it right then and there and no waiting).
I just respec'd my bank mule into a crafter, then found out I needed more skill points for his new build, so may have to respec him twice more = once to make him strong enough to go out and get those skill points, the second time to send him back to just being a crafter again. It is either that or I will have to take my favorite character to play and turn her into a crafter, which would mean giving up playing with her unless I can figure out a way to make her strong enough in combat.
Respec'ing a character for in game gold costs only 50 gold per each skill point getting respec'd; and is VERY easy to do, so it gives you the choice to keep a character and try to build them better if you just don't want to throw them out.
*
The biggest problem I've found in game is managing inventory. There is limited storage space, and coming from Single Player games we have a tendency to hoard/collect/keep mementos. There is really no room in this game for that.
I think your bank account can hold either 240 or 250 items tops. Each character can be built up to hold 200 items each (at a great cost of in game gold or Crown Points; but like Hazmick said = don't spend Crown Points unless you just have unlimited cash to keep buying them).
The game starts out with 60 inventory "slots" in your bank account, and you only have one bank no matter how many characters you have (they have to share the account).
Each character starts out with only 60 inventory "slots" as well. You can spend in game gold or Crown Points to buy more space in increments of 10 (which starts off cheap, but grows rapidly in cost) - and each character can also buy One inventory slot per day in their horse (which is how they bring their character up to 200 inventory capacity).
Making money in game is a lot easier than managing your inventory space! laugh.gif A lot of people keep a character they no longer want to play, just for the extra inventory slots. Right now I have 6 characters that can hold 200 pieces of inventory a piece; and my bank is holding 220 - and I am still juggling items around from lack of space because I have trouble throwing out things, lol.
I am a member of several guilds, and when my inventory gets too high I donate a bunch of stuff to the guilds for their weekly raffles.
If you pay for the ESO Plus membership they give you an unlimited "Crafting Bag of Holding," that holds any of the raw materials needed for crafting - that helps tremendously to keep your inventory down; but you still have to be careful of keeping too much armor or weapons in storage because it creeps up on you at the worst times (like in the middle of a dungeon when you find some great item and have no room in your inventory to pick it up, lol).
This is going to sound like a dumb question, but where does one go to spend crowns? When I click on "store" from my account screen all it shows me are the games themselves and crown "packs".
Posted by: Acadian Dec 3 2016, 07:05 PM
Oooh, I know this one! You buy the game and more crowns on the website - things that require real money. You buy the stuff you get with crowns in the game itself. Open any of your menu screens (map, inventory, whatever) and you'll see a row of icons across the top. Hovering over them shows you what they are. The Crown Store is the left most icon.
Posted by: TheCheshireKhajiit Dec 3 2016, 07:07 PM
So in that case I can't buy the imperial upgrade until I start a character?
Posted by: Acadian Dec 3 2016, 07:39 PM
Gosh, that looks like it might be so. You see, when mALX and I bought the game (before Tamriel One), you could buy the basic game or the Imperial version. So we bought the Imperial version which allowed you to start as an Imperial right out of the box. Now the offerings are the basic game or the Gold Edition which is DLC heavy but doesn't include the Imperial version.
So yes, it seems. Currently you have to buy the Imperial upgrade in game. I don't know if you can do that during chargen (never noticed if you can access the Crown Store in chargen) or if you might have to start a dummy, buy the Imp upgrade then start a new character. Clunky but doable if that is what it takes.
Posted by: TheCheshireKhajiit Dec 3 2016, 07:45 PM
Oh well, no biggy. Khajiit will just do as you suggest and make a character then get the Imperial add on. Heh, this one should've bought the Imperial edition when he saw it back in the spring, but, well you know what they say about hindsight.
At least you don't have to worry about PvP until (and if/when) you go down to Cyrodiil. That is the only place there is PvP in game unless you want to accept a duel request from a player. I think you can either access the Crown Store from your game launcher (click on the picture of the Crown Store featured items just above the blue "Play" button); or by Googling "Crown Store ESO;" or by going on this forum's "ESO News" thread to get a link to the Crown Store for if you want to just scan around and see what they are offering.
Also; if I am not mistaken there is a way to buy from there = sign in under your ESO account name and password; and when you get in game the items you purchased can be found the same way Acadian described for getting to the Crown Store - but this time you click on the icon for "Collections" to find what you have bought.
However, that said - I have seen the way to sign in to buy, but never done it myself so don't know how smoothly it works.
You have to buy items at the Crown Store with "Crowns," not cash. You spend the cash buying up the crowns, then spend the crowns on the items. There is a way to sign into your account on the upper top right corner of the page if I'm not mistaken. But if you click on "Buy Crowns" it will bring you to a page for your to sign into your account.
This is just like in XBox Live where you had to add an amount of game bucks to your account that you could buy DLC with. I added enough onto mine to buy any DLC a game came out with, then just ordered the DLC when it came out = same thing with the Crown Store. You buy the Crowns to spend, and every time you open up the Crown Store after that it shows you in the bottom left corner how many Crowns you have left to spend. But you have to buy the Crowns first; then choose what to purchase with them.
Imperials are very strong and tough; I have three of them. Dragonknights are a very "In your face" fighter, but are some of the toughest in the game in a fight when it is against you. They have some terrific powers later on in your build too (like reflect damage).
I had one Dragonknight character, she was a total blast to play! Just be prepared to spend a lot on repairing armor till your skill level is raised enough for some of the better perks, because early on their spells are not ranged in combat (but are a ton of fun!)
They draw their power from the earth (meaning the ground) and one of the coolest things is that they can temporarily become a part of it in combat. You may notice your character appears to be made of mud for 30 seconds after combat, that is the power of the earth you have temporarily become a part of. It is very awesome, and their earthquake spells make you feel like a god throwing them. They are a blast to play!
So you run your Dragonknight as a Magknight?
No, not at all - but all the classes have their own set of spells that are custom to their class and are a part of your build. The Dragon Knight draws their power from the earth; the Templar draws from the sun; the Sorcerer from Daedric Power; and the Nightblade draws their power from the shadows.
So do you think they will make more classes at some point? Or do these four cover pretty much all possible bases?
I don't see them adding any more, but what do I know? laugh.gif
Posted by: hazmick Dec 5 2016, 02:34 PM
I doubt they'll add more, since the way classes work in ESO is different from usual MMOs.
Usually, in games like Guild Wars 2 or Lord of the Rings Online, your class determines which weapons and armour you can use as well as your skills. In ESO any class can use any weapon/armour set up, and each class has 3 different skill lines to play with. If ESO added a new class it would have to have 3 new skill lines, with actives and passives, and all other classes and abilities would have to be rebalanced to fit it in.
It's not impossible, but it would take a lot of time, effort, and money...and Zenimax would probably make us pay crowns to unlock it. tongue.gif
Posted by: Acadian Dec 5 2016, 02:44 PM
I would be a bit surprised to see more classes as well for some of the same reasons that hazmick said.
I guess MMO means everything has to balance or one class/setup becomes the one and only norm.
Also, the game has to support SP and MP. That means, on one hand, any char needs to be able to fully complete the pve content (SP) but it also must allow specialized builds (DD, Tank, Healer) to optimize grouping.
There are constant complaints on the official forum to nerf this or beef up that in the name of balance and I can't even imagine the 'herding of cats' choices Zen must make to keep all happy - with only 4 classes.
That all said, the classes are not optimized from my perspective. I wanted a mystic archer and, frankly, the game can't hold a candle to the 'bowazon' characater I played way back in Diablo II in that regard. Like a very long list of games that fill my trash bin, ESO got stuck in the mentality that 'if you pick up a bow you should be a rogue using daggers, not a silly wizard. So, sure enough, a stamsorc bow/bow char is fun but not really effective at high levels. The same stamina that drives her bow precludes her from being a great mage.
Happily, for me, the magic templar really struck the perfect chord for me. Staves and weightless spears of aedric light all wrapped up in a very potent healer. Fun, forgiving and really brings out the nurturing side of Buffy.
Acadian, Buffy is so sweet to hold on to that gross bait collection for him. Jerric is already staking out beach party sites with cookpots so he can cook everyone fish! laugh.gif
I'm not holding my breath for it, but I really really hope they add a frost-based class to ESO some day. That's the missing element for me. My crazy dream is a nature-summoning forest ranger type class. Animal summons and frost magic. They already have NPCs using both. That would be so awesome. *crosses fingers and toes*
Posted by: Acadian Dec 5 2016, 05:19 PM
Heh, no worries as the ESO+ magic bag of craftibits is bottomless. If we ever take up provisioning or alchemy I think we'll have a lifetime supply of materials. I think she has, between grubs, worms and bug bits nearly a thousand pieces of bait in the bag waiting for Jerric. I've told her probably the best bait for Jerric is cooking up some stew. Or a scantily clad-beach Bosmer. tongue.gif
It would indeed be neat if Jerric could summon Itchycreek the Frost Astronaut and use a cold weapon enchantment that freezes or 75% slows foes. viking.gif
Plenty of people have complimented her, or her armor, etc. No one has ever gotten creepy or anything. My friend Aussie had a bunch of players in goblin morphs following her around calling her their queen because of her helmet once, laugh.gif
Posted by: hazmick Dec 7 2016, 01:18 PM
Cirinwe usually gets more players offering to group up with her than Haa-Rei does, though I'm not sure if that has anything to do with her sex. I have all chat (voice and text) turned off so nobody can talk to me anyway.
In my experience, lots of MMO players have both male and female characters.
Posted by: Acadian Dec 7 2016, 02:51 PM
Buffy's not been harassed in any disturbing way. She does get complements and flirted with sometimes but nothing creepy or in poor taste. She's been stalked and followed a couple times but nothing that a few minutes of ignoring has not stopped. I have noticed other players sometimes stop what they're doing when they see her but can't tell if that is because she is cute, so small or simply one of a tiny number of players that walks quite a bit instead of always running.
She did have one fellow dancing around doing mock attacks on her with an axe. Then he asked her to duel. No. Then he asked her again. No. Then he asked her again. No. (I intentionally keep auto decline turned off.) He then asked her to group. No. He then asked to be her friend. No! Then he, finally, went away. I chuckled at the poor fellow's impressive way with women. tongue.gif
When we get a group request before anyone sees her fight, I figure that if it is from a fellow there is probably some flirting going on as Buffy's looks/stature/gear certainly do not inspire confidence in her fighting abilities.
When we get a group request for the bowgirl after someone sees her in action, I generally think that is some protectiveness involved to help the poor archer who has to dance around to kill stuff. While the help is welcome in tight quarters, she is in no danger in open areas - just takes awhile to kill.
When we get a group request for the magplar after someone sees her in action, I detect no flirting there. Rather, after seeing her aedric spears and heal/buff spells in action, they want her along as a healer. Even without a group requests, we often notice a player or two choosing to travel near her through a dungeon. As a healer, it is her nature to heal/buff nearby friendlies whether grouped or not.
laugh.gif "Are you sure you don't want me to kill you? Aw shucks! Well then, can we play together? Huh? No? Well, uh...wanna be friends?"
BWAAHAA !!! Unsmooth Operator, lol.
Templar Buffy is up on the list of the better healers I've traveled with. I would choose her over one I've been playing with for over a year in a heartbeat. Acadian can't see how fights go when he isn't there with Buffy; but Bubba died in the Inner Sea Armiture - THE INNER SEA ARMITURE !!!!! Baby's first dungeon!!!! And NOT by the boss of the dungeon, but just a couple archers !!! And this was AFTER his tour with Buffy getting skyshards in Greenshade!
So Acadian can't realize how good Buffy really is at what she does, he only knows she enjoys it. But BOY is she good at it!
And as it turned out, Bubba was at over level 40 and wearing level 24 armor, so he was fighting with no protection when she was healing him too - she is an AWESOME healer !!!
Posted by: TheCheshireKhajiit Dec 7 2016, 06:28 PM
This is encouraging. Khajiit doesn't remember having any trouble in WoW with his female Dranei character, but in Destiny one time this one was playing with his female human titan and some clown pmed him with some creepy and rather explicit language that he shall not repeat here. Yet another time with the same character Khajiit went to his mailbox to get something out of it. When he exited the interface there were four or five players kneeling down in a semi circle around him. Now, Khajiit is not really sure if they were simply using the mailboxes or being creepy, but there was plenty of room all around the mailboxes (they are arrange on a column in a wide open location), so why get right there close to this one's female character? Wasn't long after that this one stopped playing that game, lol
Posted by: Acadian Dec 7 2016, 07:06 PM
Aww, thanks for the kind and encouraging words, mALX!
I suppose I should say that Buffy's spirit really has fully migrated into the magical healing templar. Our stamina bow sorc still exists but is now devoted to being our crafter. As such, her playing is geared primarily to accessing set crafting sites and gathering skyshards. She is near mastery with her four chosen crafts of wood, cloth, metal and enchanting. So I basically think now in terms of Buffy (the healing magplar) and our Crafter (the bowsorc).
Buffy is pretty comfortable using her healing and buffs to augment her own survival and offense but was very nervous 'overwatching' for Bubba - afraid she'd let him down. The prospect of healing/buffing others who rely on her is still intimidating - as much as she believes that is her calling. Successfully helping Bubba gave her a massive boost in confidence. She still feels unqualified to advertise herself as a healer for real groups but her confidence is growing.
She is tilted just slightly toward offense as a healer. Of her 10 ability slots, 5 are pure heal/buff, 4 are combination offense/buff/heal and one is offense/debuff. She is gradually developing the ability to switch out skills to support particular group needs if she knows what those are in advance. In addition to the general purpose healer/solo abilities mentioned, she should develop the ability to go almost all heal/buff (at the expense of offense) as well as two additional setups to support/buff groups that are either stamina or magicka heavy users. It all seems very intimidating still!
I hear you, Buffy! When I was playing veterinarian, I often felt insecure in my healing skills, even though they were hard-earned and well-used!
Now I have some questions while playing with my three characters.
First, is it possible to go through the Mages Guild storyline as part of a group? The reason I ask is because when Mazul went up against the shield wives earlier this week, our group Champion showed up after she had killed them, and she was able to assist him against the respawns. It makes me wonder if a group is going through a quest together, they can then take on all the tough parts together? In other words, there are very few truly solo quests (like the MQ, which is always indicated by a SOLO tag)
Second, Alise has not yet started the MQ. Is there any advantage to doing that? Sooner, or later? Or can that be put off indefinitely if a character is not interested in getting her soul back?
Third, if one is crafting in all crafts, but choosing perks only in one or two, she will not be able to do more than the basic level stuff (i.e. maple in woodworking, Level 1 recipes in provisioning, and so on) in those craft lines she is not focused on?
Fourth, does one have to be UnDaunted to go into the big dungeons like Fungal Grotto or Spindleclutch?
I'm sure I'll think of more but I'm going to sign off and work with Alise in clearing the last few delves from Stonefalls. She only has four more to go (and only two have Skyshards she hasn't yet collected). Thanks in advance!
Posted by: hazmick Dec 8 2016, 12:46 AM
First - No, Mages Guild, Fighters Guild and Main Quests are all solo instanced. They're not difficult though, and definitely not as difficult as the Forge-Wives tongue.gif
Second - No pros or cons for doing/not doing the MQ. If you want to ignore it then that's fine.
Third - You can only craft at the level you have perks for. If you want to master all crafts you'll have to put the perks into it.
Fourth - No, you don't have to be Undaunted to enter the dungeons. Undaunted just gives you quests (and therefore rewards) for doing the dungeons. It's worth noting that all of those dungeons are end-game group content.
Posted by: haute ecole rider Dec 8 2016, 01:18 AM
Thanks for the answers, hazmick!
Julian is finding the last book of the Mages Guild especially difficult! I think she needs to master a few spells first before she can complete this one. Fighter's Guild and MQ have not been especially hard so far.
What exactly do you mean by "end-game group content?" Best done with high level (i.e. Champion Level) groups? In that case Julian is not interested! Mazul, maybe . . . Alise has a long way to go, she just leveled up to 17.
Oh, and she took Buffy's advice and started working on her dual-wield by delving a couple of remaining dungeons as a stamsorc. So far she is doing well, and learning new skills while at it.
Oh, I keep forgetting to tell you, hazmick, how much I love your Silent Night!
Posted by: Acadian Dec 8 2016, 01:48 AM
Hazmick is our best answer reptile at Chorrol for ESO! biggrin.gif
Rider - regarding the MQ, the only consideration that may be important is that the MQ gives you skillpoints every time you turn around. Basically every quest I think. So if you need perks, the MQ can be helpful.
Posted by: hazmick Dec 8 2016, 01:51 AM
Yeah, end-game is basically content that is designed to be difficult i.e at the end of the game when you have no more content to challenge you.
Regular Undaunted dungeons (like Fungal Grotto) just require you to have a decent group (I think it's 4 players maximum), decent equipment, and decent skills. Some dungeons have a more difficult veteran version. I'm not sure what the level requirements are now that Champion Points exist. Regular dungeons used to be level 45 and up, and veteran dungeons used to be Veteran Rank 1 and up.
Honestly I don't think there's much point doing Undaunted pledges unless you're after one of the equipment sets that they can reward you. If Mazul wants to try them though, I'm not gonna stand in her way tongue.gif
Posted by: Acadian Dec 8 2016, 01:56 AM
If one wanted to level up the undaunted skill line to gain some of the abilities/passive perks, could taking daily delves from them be a way of doing it solo? I don't mind grouping so much but don't want to drive my schedule.
Posted by: Grits Dec 8 2016, 02:01 AM
Indeed, I always learn something from hazmick's answers to other people's questions! I'm curious about how a solo player gets into Undaunted content as well.
CheshKhajiit, I haven't been harassed in the game while playing female characters, but a few people have noticed my female sounding username and sent me PSN messages. Nothing too gross, just people looking for attention. People sometimes stop and look at Lil, but only when she has her hair in the less popular styles. On the PS4 it's unusual to see a Bosmeri lass without big boobs and long hair.
Jerric gets the most notice of my crew, funnily enough. Probably because he dodge-rolls all over the place and takes a long time to kill things which can be entertaining, plus anyone nearby gets splashed with his healing spells. Once he grouped with a guy in Craglorn and the two of them caused mayhem for a while. The other guy kept running off and doing who knows what, so Jerric just kept on killing but stayed in their group of two. Then the guy ran back up and said he wanted to turn Jerric into a vampire, he would go to the shrine and Jerric should follow. Jerric said no but thanks. The guy would not take no for an answer. He finally sent mail with money and weapons and stuff attached saying here is some gold, now travel to me right now I'm turning you into a vampire. So I rolled my eyes, returned the note with attachments, and logged off until the guy sobered up. Sheesh. He must have really wanted to bite a shirtless, sweaty Nord that night.
Acadian, Buffy's progress sounds marvelous. I am so delighted for her! My favorite thing at a World Boss is when a healer shows up. They change everything. She is the tiny elf with a golden glow surrounding her. happy.gif I completely understand the pressure that she feels, though.
I have no experience with end-game group content. My characters all have solo PvE builds since most are still learning their skills and leveling, so they can get by well on their own but are not stellar at any of the group roles.
Posted by: haute ecole rider Dec 8 2016, 02:03 AM
Hey, it's great to know I'm not alone in preferring to solo on my own schedule.
That said, it is fun to group up, either officially or spontaneously, at the world bosses. And if I encounter a healer, I tend to stick pretty close!
Posted by: hazmick Dec 8 2016, 02:08 AM
I'm pretty sure that Undaunted experience just comes from doing their daily pledge quests. It's not something I've bothered with myself, but I've heard that it's slow progress. You can also get some undaunted exp from completing the achievement that requires you to buy drinks for them in certain locations
Posted by: Acadian Dec 8 2016, 02:40 AM
The reason I asked on the daily delves for the Undaunted was after reading this in UESP wiki:
'Delve Dailies are repeatable quests offered by Bolgrul, located at the Undaunted Enclave in each Alliance capital. These quests will send you to a specific delve in the world. Similar to pledges these quests are only available from level 45 onwards[verification needed — see talk page]. Unlike pledges however, these quests can be shared with your group, and thus it is possible to do up to 15 of these quests in a day per character. These quests will reward Undaunted reputation, as well as small box of rewards. These quests are one way of obtaining the Draugr motif.'
Later the same article says you gain 5 points toward Undaunted rep for each one. The passives Buffy are interested in require Undaunted rank 9. That translates to 260 daily delves! If it is something she can do solo she might pick away at is as she quite enjoys delves and they don't give her any trouble. And as she progresses, she might even try a Pledge to see what they are about.
260? Eeep that's a lot of delving!
Woops, I'd completely forgotten that the Undaunted give you delve dailies now. Sorry about that.
The daily delves for the Undaunted are the same as daily delves that I do in Wrothgar (and used to do in Gold Coast). You'll have to go to a specific delve, kill the boss, and do a little side objective. These dailies can be done solo, unlike the dungeon pledges. Not sure what the rewards are for these daily delves - I shall investigate.
EDIT: Ok, just ran a daily delve each with Haa-Rei and Ciri. They both got 3 pieces of non-set equipment (ornate enchantment on all), some food, and some drinks as well as some gold and regular and Undaunted exp. However, the bosses you have to kill in each delve can drop set gear so you can get some good stuff. The Undaunted exp reward is really the only reason to do these dailies from a reward point of view (I do this sort of stuff for fun). That said, Haa-Rei just slotted an Undaunted skill into his front bar so it might have been worth it after all happy.gif
Posted by: Grits Dec 8 2016, 05:05 AM
hazmick, you are a star. After you explained it, Jerric did his first Undaunted daily delve tonight. This is exactly the kind of thing I have been making up for him to do, and here's someone who will actually hire him to do it! Woo!
Bonus that he already goes to the FG in Mournhold to get their dolmen jobs. Right around the corner. smile.gif
Now I'm going to keep an eye out in guild chat for people looking for help with pledges. I'm sure there are folks already discussing them and I don't know what they're talking about.
Thank you, hazmick! Like Grits, this exactly the kind of repeating quest that is right up Buffy's ally! Like Jerric, she enjoys delves whether someone rewards her or not.
Bubba was seriously afraid of not being able to help Buffy and something happening to her (while she was there helping him) would be on him.
I do agree with you in not advertising yourself as a healer due to the pressure it would put you under to perform or actually being responsible for the other players. It would take the fun away from it and make it a chore - huge difference from just doing it out of the kindness of Buffy's heart.
I didn't want to make you or Buffy uncomfortable by asking for the help; but Bubba is just weak as a kitten - he needed a friend to help him.
I tried his upgraded armor, and it did help him a lot; but he is still not as good as Misa was at this level. Then again, she was at this level before the One Tamriel patch pumped up the enemy's abilities so badly. Misa used to solo take down the giant crab and the three netches in Stonefalls, now it takes an army for them.
I have no idea about grouping to do the Mages Guild quests, I just did them solo.
The only advantage I can think of for holding off doing the main quest is to get higher level quest rewards from the Prophet; but the enemies level to the player, so - not going to be any easier doing it later. Plus, they usually give jewelry. If you wait till the end and then do them all at once, you will have a bunch of jewelry, and only be able to wear one set of it. (and it is NOT a set, so doesn't give any bonuses).
I do them early on when the character needs the extra boost of that enchanted jewelry; but usually did them at the end of each province before I left. I always did the first easy one to get that first skill point and ring for my new characters, then cleared Stonefalls before doing the next; etc.
On the crafting - I never added skill points to leveling up my character's crafting skills until they reached level 50 in the craft; then I raised it to the top.
The reason I did it that way was for the ease of doing writs. If you are not doing writs, then you can spend skill points in them anytime you want; but if you are doing writs it messes you up when you raise your skill level because it starts ordering different mats that are not easy to come by.
If you deconstruct stuff that is a higher level than your character, they will level up that skill to 50 in no time at all; and then you can raise them to the highest level in one fell swoop. Anyway, that is how I did it, but others may do it differently. To me it always messed me up when I raised their level up partially along the way.
You do not have to join the Undaunted to go in those dungeons; and if you join the Undaunted you don't have to go into them either. Joining the Undaunted just opens up another skill line with spells you might like to have access to; and if later on you DO go into those dungeons = you get great bonus gifts for being an undaunted and doing an undaunted dungeon; including skill points and some fancy gear. So if you plan to do the dungeons anyway, may as well get a bunch of bonus stuff for it.
When you first join the Undaunted, they give you a task to go to Fungal Grotto, Banished Cells, or SpindleClutch - if you just go to those dungeons and get them on your map, they consider the quest completed. You can come back and be welcomed into their group. You do not have to clear that dungeon at all.
After that, they never bother you again, but if you ask them they will refer you back to that first dungeon again. But go to Mournhold or Eldon Root and find them, and you will see they have the arrow over their head to do quests - THOSE are group only dungeons. They cannot be done solo, and come prepared to die repeatedly even in a group - they are tough dungeons. I went through one without the Undaunted quest and it was really hard; came back with the Undaunted quest on it and it was awful, horrible!
If one wanted to level up the undaunted skill line to gain some of the abilities/passive perks, could taking daily delves from them be a way of doing it solo? I don't mind grouping so much but don't want to drive my schedule.
You can't do them solo. And doing the daily pledges does gain your level in Undaunted, so does putting one of their skills on one of your hot bars and making sure it is active when you turn in quests - it will level up.
QUOTE(Acadian @ Dec 7 2016, 08:40 PM) *
The reason I asked on the daily delves for the Undaunted was after reading this in UESP wiki:
'Delve Dailies are repeatable quests offered by Bolgrul, located at the Undaunted Enclave in each Alliance capital. These quests will send you to a specific delve in the world. Similar to pledges these quests are only available from level 45 onwards[verification needed — see talk page]. Unlike pledges however, these quests can be shared with your group, and thus it is possible to do up to 15 of these quests in a day per character. These quests will reward Undaunted reputation, as well as small box of rewards. These quests are one way of obtaining the Draugr motif.'
Later the same article says you gain 5 points toward Undaunted rep for each one. The passives Buffy are interested in require Undaunted rank 9. That translates to 260 daily delves! If it is something she can do solo she might pick away at is as she quite enjoys delves and they don't give her any trouble. And as she progresses, she might even try a Pledge to see what they are about.
The pledges cannot be done solo; even in groups they are a die fest without a good healer and tank. But I have raised my Undaunted skill level by spending a couple skill points in their skill line and making sure those are in your active bar when you turn in quests or level up.
Misa has only done 3 pledges and is up to level 4 in her Undaunted; but she got up to 3 in it without doing any pledges.
The daily delves for the Undaunted are the same as daily delves that I do in Wrothgar (and used to do in Gold Coast). You'll have to go to a specific delve, kill the boss, and do a little side objective. These dailies can be done solo, unlike the dungeon pledges. Not sure what the rewards are for these daily delves - I shall investigate.
Ooh, I didn't know about these. Any of the pledges I've been on could not have been done solo at all! I may have to start taking some of these with Misa if they can be done solo!
Are these the one that are 1 rep point; and the group ones are 5 rep points?
Posted by: hazmick Dec 8 2016, 04:07 PM
Yeah, the daily delves are for solo players. They're not pledges. You can pick them up at Undaunted enclaves from an Orc called Bolgrul, and he can send you to one of ~15 delves across Tamriel.
Not sure how many rep points you get, but I'd assume it's not many since it's easy content.
Oh, I'm going to have to try those out! I hate the pledges unless I go with an experienced tank and healer (and another DPS, lol. )
Okay, everyone kept going on about Stamina builds to me; so when I respec'd Bubba I tried it. I learned pretty quickly that a stamina build doesn't work well for a melee character. He was weak as a kitten and pretty much a one hit kill; unable to take on enemies at a much higher level than Misa was taking on at lower levels.
I didn't know how to do the attributes when I did Misa; and so spent her attribute points fairly evenly between Magicka, Health, and Stamina. She is tough in melee and can cast Mages Guild spells with no problems in combat and "spin to win" and cast her stamina based spells repeatedly.
Now, it is true that builds have changed since Misa was in those early levels due to the game updates changing so much from magicka to stamina, and urking up stamina regen. But I just don't think those all stamina builds are cut out for a melee character.
So I spent the in game gold and respec'd Bubba's attribute points today, then took him out for a spin.
Magicka - 10; Health - 25; and Stamina - 20. (He still has 9 more attribute points coming)
(Misa's is Magicka - 23; Health - 24; and Stamina - 17 because she was built back when most of the spells were magicka based - I need to respec her to have more stamina now that they changed all that).
Now, I am really unsure how I'm going to spend those next 9 points on Bubba. I know the boosted health has made one heck of a difference in his combat. He is no longer a weak kitten in a fight, but one tough badass that can take on a boss solo (like Misa).
So when you hear about stamina builds, before trying them out = consider what type of fighting your character does. Melee def needs some stamina, but if you put it all in stamina like the internet advises you will end up with a weak character that can DPS like heck but not take a hit at all. Unless you have a great healer along every where you go = not a good build.
I would be interested in hearing some builds on here that do work well for different types of combat.
Khajiit has been putting all of Mira's points in stamina. This one was thinking at first perhaps 1 health for every 2 or 3 stamina points would be a reasonable sacrifice to damage for a little more durability. Then he read a lot of people saying to focus on one attribute.
Posted by: Acadian Dec 10 2016, 03:03 PM
I put all 64 level up associated points into either blue or green. Then I augment base health via gear enchantments or set bonuses in a 'season to taste' manner.
My Crafter bow/bow stamsorc requires a bit more health on her gear since her self healing has either casting times or requires auras to be active. When forced to fight up close, she has to rely on a high crit chance, two auras being active and a volley of her own arrows on top of her - when all that comes together, she can generate 3000hp/sec self-healing. It isn't easy or pretty though.
Buffy the magplar requires less health augmentation because she can so effortlessly self-heal while fighting. In fact, when up close her primary offensive ability leeches life while killing. She only really needs enough health to take being stun-locked for a few seconds (unable to heal). And she is developing counter-measures to the serious threat posed by being stun-locked or disabled as she improves her in close fighting. Magicaka is super critical to the magplar because they go through loads of it and more = better healing and damage. And as a Bosmer, she will always have 10% less than a Breton or Altmer could get via racial bonuses.
In the case of both characters, neither of them need to go full health on their gear. There are 7 armor, 3 jewelry and generally 2 or 3 potential 'set bonuses' you can get to augment stats. Of this roughly 13 potential 'shots' of attribute boosting, I think the stamsorc uses about 6 for health, the magplar is doing well only using about 4 for health. All the rest augment their primary stat.
I imagine a group DD is going to be very low health and more reliant on tank/healer. Just as a group tank is going to be very high hp but very low damage. Happily, a group healer vs a solo healer is mostly a matter of just switching out a a few offensive skills to slot more support skills - attribute choices remain the same.
Posted by: hazmick Dec 10 2016, 03:16 PM
Personally I'd never waste attribute points on health since it's so easy to augment it using food, passive skills, active buffs, and self healing.
Everyone plays differently though, so what works for some people won't work for others, and what worked 6 months ago might not be viable now.
Posted by: Acadian Dec 10 2016, 03:31 PM
Oh, thanks for mentioning the chow. We always try to run a 35 min hp augment when it looks like things are challenging. Need to get better at doing that as we find more +hp food that we use so there's really no reason not to use it more than we do. That is just picking up food from loot without even touching the provisioning craft.
Posted by: mALX Dec 10 2016, 03:42 PM
I think the class and combat style make a difference in a character's needs too. Melee is going to need more hit points than ranged; and like Acadian pointed out = Sorcs and Templars have no need of the health because they can produce their own.
Posted by: haute ecole rider Dec 10 2016, 03:53 PM
I've been putting a lot of stamina on my three builds lately.
Mazul and Julian both have some health stats (I'll have to look them up later tonight), so they're a bit tougher in a melee. But both are quite weak when up against sorcs, so that's something that will have to change.
For Mazul, getting that new set of armor with the high HP really made a difference in her confrontation with the Shield Wives. She was also able to survive Forge Mother Alga.
After completing the Orsinium quest line, I have a greater appreciation of the role of women in Orc culture. Without them, the men are nothing. Nothing.
I've been reading a lot about the health vs stamina for melee. I think the best one out there supports putting a lot of health into a melee tank, and a lot of stamina into a DPS style melee (like Nightblade dual wield, for example). Heavy armor builds should have high attribute points into their health bar, while stamina builds should go for medium armor. In summary, use the armor and its enchantments to cover your weakest attribute.
Posted by: Grits Dec 10 2016, 09:16 PM
Stamina Templar Jerric has all of his points in Stamina. He relies on food, enchantments, heavy armor, his own skill-line buffs, and set bonuses to be able to survive on his own at melee range. The plan is to make a full set of medium/DPS gear so that he can tackle the group content, since he will not make it in those fights without a healer. However it concerns me that all of the massive damage dealers I see are staff-wielding mages. Hopefully his ranged Templar spells will make up the difference against those bosses where you really have to stay at range.
The problem I had with some points in health was that he could stay on his feet for a long time, but using One-Handed and Shield he couldn't do damage fast enough. He would eventually run out of all bars and just get overwhelmed.
My pure Stamina Sorcerers have done well with melee if they're wearing some heavy pieces since they have a good self-heal through the clannfear. My Stamina Nightblades have to not get hit. Too soon to tell with my Orsimer melee Stam Dragonknight. I suspect she will also rely on heavy armor until she gets through her solo content and can respect with some health.
Quick question, and purely hypothetical of course, but does the PC version of ESO have good gamepad support? (such as Xbox or Playstation controllers).
I know that it has it, but just wanted to know if any of my trusted Chorrol comrades have tested it for themselves.
An excellent question. I don't know yet. I have a wired Xbox controller to try it out, but it's put away somewhere in a box labeled Things With Cords. We have a lot of those boxes. It could be awhile before I find it.
Yes. Press "Escape," on the list that pops up choose "Controls." From that menu you can change the binding keys for any action, and even set some actions to be toggled that are set to off by default (such as walk instead of run; auto-run/walk (which I think is normally "Num Lock") - and also set toggle keys up to access your add-on menus.
I have set up the "Num Lock" to auto walk so I use my left hand less; it automatically stops walking if you activate something or draw your weapon. I have the number "7" on my numeric pad set to toggle between walk and run; and the numbers "9" and "3" to toggle up my "Trait Buddy" and "Recipe List" add-ons respectively.
I can't remember; but may have exchanged the space bar and "E" key functions to swap them out.
I am also pretty sure Acadian changed his left hand keys to something else as well; whatever he was used to in Skyrim.
Oh wait, XBox controllers? Not sure. I haven't tried that yet. I thought you meant the ability to reset the key coding to your own taste.
Posted by: hazmick Dec 12 2016, 11:34 PM
No problem. As always, most of the threads that I find about the topic are from last year when gamepad support was first introduced, with most people saying that it wasn't working properly at the time.
It's likely one of those things that works best by testing it myself. Hmmm.
Posted by: Grits Dec 13 2016, 12:43 AM
Yes, yes, you should definitely test it yourself!!! biggrin.gif
Khajiit has played with it. It changes the UI a lot but it makes your main hotbuttons very convenient to reach. This one prefers the mouse and keyboard for this game, though he really needs to test the gamepad more.
Thanks Cheshire. What's the sensitivity like with the gamepad? That seems to be the biggest complaint I'm hearing, but I'm not sure if people mean that the sensitivity is actually bad or just that it's not as good as a mouse (which it obviously won't be).
Well, it was a little stiff on its default setting for Khajiit's taste, so he had to bump it up a touch and then it was fine.
Disease Damage:
Disease Damage comes from Weapon Enchants and and also from a number of Nightblade ability morphs. Disease Damage has the chance to proc the Diseased Status Effect which reduces the healing received by the target by 15% for 10 seconds. Disease Damage is mitigated with Armor (Physical Resistance).
In Player vs Player, Disease Damage is excellent gorilla warfare because it keeps the "enemy" players from being able to heal themselves and most players enchant their jewelry to make them immune to fire/ice/shock for spells that can be cast on them; but they rarely wear jewelry to make them immune to disease, so it is almost always irresistible damage. (or used to be, seems now they have made it blockable by a physical resistance enchant)
Here is a page that goes into detail about the kinds of damage you can use against enemies in both the environment and player:
Wanted to play before work yesterday.
No dice. Server was down until 12:45, by which time I was just pulling into the parking lot at my work.
Damn.
Came home about 11 pm last night, did a little mats hunting with Alise around Davon's Watch (we did find the location of the Harborage, then found it again to fix its location in our minds), killed a few hostile critters and some remaining Covenant troops down on the beach, then came back to Davon's Watch to get another riding lesson, finish the last writ and to start some new research.
I don't know why but Alise wants to research traits across all the crafting lines, not just wood.working and light armor. She also wanted to get certified in all six crafts. I said okay . . .
Julian just did some riding lessons last night. She's about ten days away from finishing the horse encumbrance lessons. Then she'll move on to speed.
Mazul also did riding lessons. She is just a day behind Julian on the encumbrance lessons. She is not sure about speed or stamina, she prefers to walk. She has been riding Paint when adventuring with Gray and Bear, but her behind doesn't like it. She did finish research on a couple of pieces, so she started a couple more, but they are taking a couple days each.
I promised myself that I would have a couple of hours this morning with my gang before I took my mom to her low vision specialist appointment, but no. NA server is down. Again.
Damn. Damn.
Alise has a good idea. On the PS4 I made the mistake of giving one equipment craft each to three characters. Now instead of finding one motif book or chapter to get a set in a particular style, I have to find two or even three of them. I've taken steps to fix that by having one character start studying traits across all craft skills, but it will be a long time (and a fourth set of rare motif books!!) before I get to where I would have been if I started out with one equipment crafter.
That's why in my PC crew, Elke of Green River is doing all of the equipment crafting. Whew!
I hope you get some time to play tonight!
Posted by: haute ecole rider Dec 13 2016, 05:19 PM
Yes, my initial-stage plan was to have Mazul do all the equipment crafting, and Julian do the Consumables. Both are certified in the equipment, I can't recall if Maz can do the Consumable writs or not as well. She is not interested in that at all.
But she did learn woodworking and clothing as well, since she is the only one who can craft the medium armor at Julian's level. Her dream is to someday be the armorer for the entire crew across three alliances. Blacksmithing is her first love (spoken like a true forge-wife), but she enjoys crafting in all materials.
Julian is Master Provisioner, as I mentioned before, but she also does Enchanting and Alchemy for the same reasons - she is the only one with the skill to enchant Mazul's crafted equipment.
But ultimately I hope to have each character (I have six planned out, though I have no idea who the sixth one will be) concentrate and become master of one craft while being conversant in the other lines.
Posted by: Grits Dec 13 2016, 06:11 PM
I think my Saxhleel trait researcher Stays-Up-Late will make the move to the PC (meaning be re-created there) so he can help Elke with her inventory management. Elke is not super-organized but she loves the work, while Stays likes to categorize and meditate on the nature of things, preferably while lying down in the sun. Actual crafting is bad for his beautiful claws. Plus he never got along with Darnand.
Both teams could use a merchant. Not the NPC, but a teammate to hold on to things that they might sell or might want later. When my PS4 guild asked for auction donations it took me forever to dig through everyone's stuff for the items that didn't quite suit but were too good to just deconstruct or sell (purple gear mostly). Plus whenever someone wants to go shopping they have to hit the bank first. The merchant could have a decent stash of pocket money and just go get what's wanted. Hmm.
Agreed on one person doing all the equipment crafting. I mean, the regular motifs are easy to come by; but the specialized ones like Dwemer, Primal, etc - especially ones that have 14 different motifs to learn and cost thousands in the Guild Stores to buy - don't want to have to be repeating that process several times!
The only thing about that is - do you want whoever you have doing your major equipment crafting to have access to the specialized forges; (like if you want to make Soul Shriven, or the Fighters and Mages Guild's forges).
(Meaning they would have to go out adventuring first before becoming a crafter; to get access to these).
And as for Provisioning = since One Tamriel; the only items you will have access to in loot will be stuff at the skill level of the character out there looting. So high level recipes will have to be bought unless your character has the strength to adventure and find those recipes. (unless you can afford to buy them in the Guild Stores).
I made the mistake of respec'ing Bubba too early into a Master Crafter. He can make master level recipes, but doesn't know any! He has to either buy them or go out in the world to get them; which he is too weak to do. And he can't access Soul Shriven, meaning I have to get him past Molag Bal somehow when he has trouble passing a mudcrab.
So in the end, not sure if Misa will end up having to take over the crafting, since she has access to all these things already. But I'm not respec'ing her to crafting till I've finished everything she can enjoy doing, because I already found out through Bubba how weak it will make her. verysad.gif
Soul Shriven is a quest reward from doing Cadwell's Silver that is bound on giving = can't be passed amongst characters or put in the bank. (unfortunately, because it is my favorite swords in game; and after passing Molag Bal once with Misa = not anxious to do that fight with another character - especially a weaker one, lol).
But yeah, Bubba has to go through all that now, or I can decide to make Misa my major crafter.
I don't think Alchemy matters, haven't seen any thing it offers different by sinking skill points into it, so actually any character can take on the Alchemy; it doesn't have to be the same one that is doing the rest.
Enchanting may be the same; I really don't know if you find different runes after you sink skill points into Enchanting, does anyone know? I haven't really noticed that because all my characters have level 50 in enchanting, but only Misa and Bubba have skill points sunk into it. I really haven't noticed if Calia or Mia bring in different stones than Misa or Bubba.
But Provisioning Writs = Bubba is bringing in rare provisioning ingredients that I've never seen or heard of till he spent the skill points in provisioning. He brought in some Atherial Dust as a writ reward that sold for 97,000 for one piece!
So maybe one questing adventurer can become the crafter for Equipment and Provisioning; and the Alchemy and Enchanting can be stuck on just any character?
Wow, you got some gold dust as a writ reward?! That is fantastic!
OK, thanks for the info on Soul Shriven. I'll turn Elke loose on her questlines first and then plan to respec once everyone else starts leveling up and needing her services. She is a sorc, so hopefully she'll do OK.
Darnand is doing top-tier Enchanting writs and sometimes gets Kuta runes in the reward. But Lleduri (on the PC) is doing tier one Enchanting writs and also just got a Kuta rune in a reward. So I have no idea. The reward glyphs seem to be the same level as the writ that they do, but I can't be sure because Darnand's skill rank and character level are both at the top bracket. Everyone else is at rank one and gets Trifling glyphs regardless of their character level. So probably, lol.
That is an excellent point about the questline locations, mALX!
I had forgotten about Soul Shriven and the Coldharbour sets. Is Soul Shriven a reward motif given directly to the character, or a book that can be passed through the bank to another character on the same account? For some reason I thought it was a costume. huh.gif
Soul Shriven is a quest reward from doing Cadwell's Silver that is bound on giving = can't be passed amongst characters or put in the bank. (unfortunately, because it is my favorite swords in game; and after passing Molag Bal once with Misa = not anxious to do that fight with another character - especially a weaker one, lol).
But yeah, Bubba has to go through all that now, or I can decide to make Misa my major crafter.
I don't think Alchemy matters, haven't seen any thing it offers different by sinking skill points into it, so actually any character can take on the Alchemy; it doesn't have to be the same one that is doing the rest.
Enchanting may be the same; I really don't know if you find different runes after you sink skill points into Enchanting, does anyone know? I haven't really noticed that because all my characters have level 50 in enchanting, but only Misa and Bubba have skill points sunk into it. I really haven't noticed if Calia or Mia bring in different stones than Misa or Bubba.
But Provisioning Writs = Bubba is bringing in rare provisioning ingredients that I've never seen or heard of till he spent the skill points in provisioning. He brought in some Atherial Dust as a writ reward that sold for 97,000 for one piece!
So maybe one questing adventurer can become the crafter for Equipment and Provisioning; and the Alchemy and Enchanting can be stuck on just any character?
97,000 for one unit of an ingredient?!
Yes, and it sold in just a day after posting it. And I actually priced it lower than what I found in the guild stores, most were asking upwards of 100,000 gold for one piece of it.
QUOTE(Grits @ Dec 13 2016, 02:25 PM) *
Wow, you got some gold dust as a writ reward?! That is fantastic!
OK, thanks for the info on Soul Shriven. I'll turn Elke loose on her questlines first and then plan to respec once everyone else starts leveling up and needing her services. She is a sorc, so hopefully she'll do OK.
Darnand is doing top-tier Enchanting writs and sometimes gets Kuta runes in the reward. But Lleduri (on the PC) is doing tier one Enchanting writs and also just got a Kuta rune in a reward. So I have no idea. The reward glyphs seem to be the same level as the writ that they do, but I can't be sure because Darnand's skill rank and character level are both at the top bracket. Everyone else is at rank one and gets Trifling glyphs regardless of their character level. So probably, lol.
Same here on the writ rewards for enchanting. Everyone else gets a trifling glyph and an empty soul gem. Bubba and Misa get Superb glyphs and a kuta.
(Kuta = I've sold about 40 Kutas in the past two weeks for 4,730 gold per each - saving up for my house in February, lol).
Not surprising, that Aetherial Dust is pretty rare!
Selling it is the best option, unless you have all the other ingredients.
If this one was to take a screeny of Mira wearing her armor, would someone here be able to identify what style the cuirass is?
I can only tell if you link it so my game can scan it. I mean, some of the early sets are easy to tell; like Argonian/Bosmer/Redguard. But beyond those three - I can't tell by sight.
Hmmm ok
If no one here can identify it, try looking through the ESO Fashion site: http://eso.mmo-fashion.com/.
If it is from a named set you can check the lists, they have the motifs listed somewhere.
We could certainly try tongue.gif
Grits's link there is really handy too.
Ok, let's try it:
It's an iron cuirass of some sort but Khajiit is not sure of the style. He really likes it though!
Posted by: Grits Dec 16 2016, 08:27 PM
Wow that's nice, and Mira looks great!
I have no idea. It looks Nordish with the fur trim and round medal, but I've never seen gold-colored iron with sleeves like that. How improved is it, meaning white, green, blue, etc? I wonder if that changes the appearance significantly.
Hmmm not sure. This one will have to check it when he is on next. Khajiit didn't do anything to it so if it was improved, it came that way. Ordinary Nord iron armor looks like chainmail.
Posted by: hazmick Dec 16 2016, 08:58 PM
Yep, that's Nord style armour, crafted using Calcinium or another higher tier material. Not sure why it would say it's iron, unless it's part of a set or something. How strange.
Yep, you're right. After some research (using the link Grits provided), Khajiit can concur that is the Nord style normally reserved for upper tier gear. This one will check the next time he is on to see if it is indeed just plain ol' iron.
Oh, she is gorgeous!!! What level the armor is makes a difference in the appearance too; and glad you let us know it was heavy armor. I think the Nordish armor has the fur trim like that.
Grits - Yes, improving armor does change the appearance of it.
This is probably part of a set to have those leaves inset; one of my bank mules has armor like that from Lamae.
So, do we ever learn the circumstances behind our death? Like were we captured while fighting or what?
We aren't dead! Our souls were taken by Molag Bal (because souls generate power) - along with hundreds of thousands of other souls. (one of the things I like about this game = you are not "the chosen one," and the only reason you are given any importance whatsoever is because - without a soul, you can bypass more barriers than someone with a soul; and have nothing to lose going places where your soul would be forfeit.
Hunh. Khajiit could've sworn Lyris Titan-born said we were dead.
Posted by: Grits Dec 17 2016, 11:09 PM
All I've heard is that we were sacrificed personally by Mannimarco in some kind of mass ritual. Our original bodies are dead somewhere, possibly the toys of necromancers. I find it easy to ignore all of this and bend the game's world to my storyline. laugh.gif
Posted by: mALX Dec 17 2016, 11:34 PM
Oh, okay; the dialogue from Lyris does say dead, but the prophet and everything else kind of points to a living dead = like a husk or shell that will eventually turn into those zombie-type things you see in Coldharbour:
"I died, but that was only the beginning...
I awoke in Oblivion. My body is intact, but my soul has been torn from my body."
— The Soul-less One
Lyris: A man named Mannimarco. His Worm Cult is doing some kind of ritual back in Tamriel. They sacrificed you, and everyone in this prison, to the Daedric Prince Molag Bal. After you died, whatever was left showed up here. They call you the Soul Shriven.
Player: Vestige?
Prophet: That is the name I have given you. You are but a trace of your former self. A Soul-less one. An empty vessel that longs to be filled. It is as the Scrolls foretold, but not exactly as I imagined.
And then here is the Wiki description on Soul-Shriven:
QUOTE
Soul-Shriven are the remnants of individuals who have been enslaved by the Daedric Prince of Domination, Molag Bal. They are eternally doomed to toil in torment for the glory and amusement of the Daedric Lord.
Molag Bal's lust for the enslavement of mortal souls is such that at the moment of their death, he employs various methods to divert a mortal's soul from its journey to the afterlife to imprisonment and slavery in Coldharbour, his realm of Oblivion.
Once the soul arrives in Coldharbour, it is exchanged for an essence commonly known as the vestige. The vestige attracts to itself a shapeless but energetic material called the "creatia" of Oblivion. In Coldharbour, this creatia takes the form of a substance known as the Azure Plasm - ubiquitous pools of blue slime.
The Azure Plasm coalesces around a vestige and forms a corporeal body with the semblance of the shape it wore in life. The process is similar to how lesser Daedra reform on their respective planes of Oblivion, after they're banished or slain.
However, since these "soulless ones" are not native to Oblivion, their bodies are mere imitations of their form in life. As such, these facsimiles suffer rapid wear and decay. Scholars have theorized that the reason these bodies are flawed is because they have lost the focusing principle of their Anuic souls, so their vestiges are imperfect patterns.
Where their souls are kept is unknown, but some believe they are contained within soul gems, and that the soul shriven can feel themselves being jostled around as their respective gems are moved from one place to another.
So technically, I think we escaped Coldharbour after our soul was taken, but before he was able to turn us into one of those zombies you see up there.
According to the Wiki, this is what our lives would have been had we not escaped:
QUOTE
Eternal Torment:
Despite their rapid decay, the Soul Shriven are henceforth tortured in deepest bowels of Coldharbour for the amusement of Molag Bal. Various Dremora administer the suffering in a very structured and orderly manner, going as far as meeting "toil and torment quotas".
The Soul Shriven themselves are subject to meeting certain quotas also.
After years of torment, their minds lose any notion of reality and eventually they succumb to insanity. The oldest of these Soul Shriven are known as ferals. They fear neither pain nor death, and their eternal hunger drives them to attack and eat anything - including each other. The lesser Daedra who roam Coldharbour are said to fear them.
One particular individual didn't become insane, despite supposedly being the oldest of the Soul Shriven. Sir Cadwell, a gallant knight in his previous life, was already insane when he arrived in Coldharbour but now sees the realm as a wondrous place.
Eventually all Soul Shriven die, but due to the nature of the vestige, their body simply reforms upon death and the torturous cycle repeats itself.
I'm using an Xbox360 controller for my PC game now, and so far it works great. Poor Elke has been my test subject. I've gotten her killed by the guards once. The only issue is that I can't find a good place for the chat box. It blocks the loot text in its lower left spot, and moving it to lower right makes it zoom across the screen from the left bar every time it maximizes. If I can figure out how to move the little bar all the way right, I'll be in business.
Best thing is the keyboard still works for text entry and keyboard shortcuts. *happy dance*
Yeah, Khajiit was fairly happy with it. The special moves buttons are very easy to reach on the game pad and is easier for this one to manage than the number buttons on the top of the keyboard.
I was having the same issue using an Xbox One controller, so I just minimized the chat box since I don't use it anyway.
I like the way the UI changes when you use a gamepad - it's exactly the same as it was on Xbox so everything is familiar for me.
Most people have the loot text in the lower right; maybe move it instead of the chat box. (to eliminate it zooming across the screen to get to the right)
