I went to the range this morning and tried something new. I rented an FN Scar-L (the version that fires 5.56). It is a full auto gun. So this was my first time trying full auto, as well as firing a Scar.
In the end I really did not like the Scar much. The muzzle flash was much brighter than my Sig Sauer M4. It was a really bright white light that blinded me for the instant that I fired. In contrast I never really noticed any flash with my Sig Sauer. At least it is nothing that bright and overpowering. Likewise, the Scar was a lot louder than my Sig, and the recoil was a lot worse. One thing I really did like about the Scar was the iron sights. I had a big circular front post, that was really easy to aim with.
I fired a magazine just semi so I could get a feel for the Scar. It is also different in that the charging handle is on the left side of the barrel, rather than behind it like on an AR-15. Because of that you cannot hold the barrel with your left hand. The charging handle will literally fly into your hand when you fire. So you have to use the vertical foregrip with it.
That was my first time using a foregrip as well. It was ok. But I think I prefer it with my hand on the barrel. I had to keep reminding myself to take my hand off the barrel and put it on the foregrip, because I am so used to always having it there. OTOH, one plus to the foregrip was that with my left arm lower down because of it, I was able to brace my elbow against my chest when I fired. I cannot do that with my hand higher up on the barrel.
Firing full auto was a lot different than semi as well. Much more recoil
Here is what I shot, about 20 rounds semi and maybe 70 full auto. I never fired more than a 3-4 round burst. It shot exactly like I read it would. Your first round goes dead center, the next goes high and left, in the shoulder area, and the rest are off in the air up and left. After a while I got better at controlling it, but the first round was still the only accurate one. The rest were going off into what would have been the arm. That one shot all alone by itself up in the neck was literally my last bullet. I did that one on semi on purpose.
All in all I prefer semi-auto. I like every bullet going exactly where I want it to. Full Auto is just too wild, with too many bullets going off where I don't want. In the end it really made me appreciate my Sig Sauer a lot more. I vastly prefer it over the Scar.
My shoulder is now sore too. Usually I can fire about 100 rounds of 5.56 on semi and only have a little red dot of a bruise on my shoulder afterward. About half that of .308 semi will leave me aching, and my shoulder one big red bruise. The 5.56 on full auto left me with a big bruise, but not quite as big as the .308 would have done.
