Chorrol.com _ General Discussion _ -The Coffee Shop- Something new, something old...

Posted by: Rane Jun 18 2005, 01:57 PM

Righto, the next one is here. A minor note from a certain person first:
We had intended the coffee shop to be a nice place where people could talk about their daily activities and such, kinda like the Lurkers Lair on the Official Forums.

It didn't quite turn out that way though, people have been taking advantage of their freedoms in here, there has been a lot of spamming and even some flaming. We will not tolerate that any longer.

So unfortunately we've had to decide to increase the rules for this thread. Of course the normal forum rules still apply, but we'll elaborate here.:

1. No spamming.

We consider double posting and posting posts with only a few words to be spam. If you do that your post will be deleter or moved, do it too often and you might receive a warning for it.

We also consider chit-chat spam. This forum has a special chat channel for chatting, you're welcome to go there, and chat with other members or with the staff as we're always there, doing it in here is not allowed.

The address to that chatroom is:
W4O chat

And for assistence to use a chat like this, I recommend looking over this thread:
http://forums.waiting4oblivion.com/viewtopic.php?t=248

Or contacting one of the Administrators.

2. No discussion of accounts or warnings.

There shall be no more discussion about members, about accounts, about how many warnings you've gotten or anything like that. this includes posts about post count, ranks or any such things.

3. No trolling.

No posting of random nonsense, no posting of irrelevant things, no posting the same thing over and over just to get it noticed, no swearing or flaming.

4. No religion or politics.

No discussion about religion or politics is to be had in these threads. If you want to discuss religion or politics, please do make another thread, or if another such thread already exists, please post in it.

If you have a question about the rules of the forums, feel free to ask it to either a Global Moderator or an Administrator.

If you're unsure if something is fit to post here, it might be. Again best to ask a Global Moderator or Administrator.

If you're wondering how we think a Lair or the Coffee Shop should look like, what we do allow, then I recommend taking a look at the Lurkers Lair at the Official Forums.

On a side note, if you're the one making the new shop, then please include these rules in the first post.

On behalf of the Wating4Oblivion Administrators and Global Moderators,

~ Alexander ~
That said, enjoy your stay here at the Coffee Shop.

Ooh, first reply to me!

Erm...Ah...

I don't actually have anything to say. I must remember to think of things to say BEFORE clicking the big shiny reply button...

EDIT: Hang on! I just read the guidelines and I think that my post was probably against them.

Anyway, I'm going to try and follow this coffee shop thred from the start as all the others confused me when I just entered them and only read the later posts.

ah Rane......I give up, I wonīt even try to do things when you are present....such as locking...or..creating new threads

but nevermind......Letīs have a nice afternoon here anyway :goodjob:

EDIT: Youīre right Chumbaniya....itīs like in a cafe.....some loose quotes just doesnīt make sense....

Hey, check it out, I'm not an apprentice anymore - gone are my 5 little flaming meteors, replaced by the single mighty star. I have joined the ranks of the observers!

~130 posts isn't bad for me, I normally lose interest in any one forum within a week. Well done W4O, you've kept me interested for a loooong time biggrin.gif.

I answered you in RP.
Whats going on?.... I'm so confused
There was some technical issues with the new forums. I don't know if you noticed but people kept getting server timeouts and busy server error pages all the time.

Ultimately, the entire site went down (not just the forums).

Now the site is back up but the new forums are not up. The data from them is still saved though, so we'll have to see what we come up with.

Since these old forums are apparently located on another server we could get them back up even when the rest of the site was down.

So now we're back at the moment right before the move. Hence all posts you made at the new forums are not here.

Posted by: Channler Jun 18 2005, 09:23 PM

Ahh... Hmm well

I;m really thinking about trying this... biggrin.gif

Hehe... Just watched the movie Team America World Police, its freaking funny! A little childish, but... a real ROFL! :goodjob:

Posted by: Chumbaniya Jun 18 2005, 11:29 PM

Dammit, this is probably the most boring day of my life. I'm currently trying to rotate around various forums so that each time I come back to one of them, some new posts have been posted. It's also too hot here (in England - can you believe that?) so I'm too lethargic to do anything. I can't even be bothered to go to sleep or play any PC games.

Right then, time I watched the Godfather. See you all in the morning.

QUICK EDIT: I spelt 'most' as 'mosy'. *gets beaten by the viscious ape of grammar and spelling*

Ooooh yes.... I know precisely what you mean. I moved here from Sctoland last year and still can't adapt to the summer temperatures - its the humidity that makes it really bad, I'm sure its about 80% here right now, and that's with every single window open in the house. Its like the bloody tropics.

Posted by: Channler Jun 19 2005, 01:18 AM

=P aren't you glad you don't live in North Carolina? biggrin.gif

Almost everyday hmidty is at 100%... Plus the bugs and what not, cheers for being subtropical

Posted by: Dantrag Jun 19 2005, 04:05 AM

Yeah, the weather would be bearable without the mosquitoes, deerflies, yellowflies, and horseflies.

NC sucks when it comes to bugs.

Posted by: minque Jun 19 2005, 10:52 AM

Yuck.....that sounds awful! In Sweden itīs now sunny, rather warm but not so bad, no insects apart from some wasps and so...quite good actually... biggrin.gif

Posted by: Fuzzy Knight Jun 19 2005, 10:55 AM

Oooh... Woke up at 7:45, because a wasp had comed into my room... So when I got up it was gone, so I went to sleep again. Then around.. 15 min later I hear the wasp again.. Ignore it, then after half a hour without sleep its gone - Then around.. 9 or something a new wasp comes, and then after a few minutes right before I was about to smack it, it flew out of the window...

Oooh... I who like sleeping with the window open kvright.gif

But anyway... Morning all! :goodjob:

Posted by: Chumbaniya Jun 19 2005, 11:53 AM

Lucky for me no wasps decided to wake me from my slumber and I got up around 10:00. It's father's day today, which means I really should be doing things for my dad (fat chance! I'll still make him fetch me drinks all day tongue.gif).

Posted by: minque Jun 19 2005, 11:56 AM

Fatherīs day??? why in sweden that is in november..motherīs day in may though..woow

dadīs shouldnīt get their sons drinks all day...thatīll spoil them..the sons i mean... wink.gif

Posted by: Chumbaniya Jun 19 2005, 11:58 AM

Hehehe you actually make me feel better in this insurmountable tropical heat and humidity - the one thing I can't stand are wasps. I have a phobia towards any yellow-and-black striped insects, they send me screaming into the opposite corner of my house tongue.gif I guess I'm lucky then that, oddly, there aren't any around here today biggrin.gif

Posted by: Fuzzy Knight Jun 19 2005, 03:38 PM

Hehe... biggrin.gif

Well went on my friends trampoline with some other friends and filled it with cold water and leaped onto it and started jumping, ohh... it was really chilling at least in this heat :lickinglips:
I have a phobia towards any yellow-and-black striped insects
Even hoverflies? Come on, hoverflies are cool. They just... hover. And look like wasps.

Posted by: 9of9 Jun 19 2005, 06:40 PM

I don't mind them if they don't sting... but it takes someone specialising in insects with an MA in Biological Sciences to convince me that that is, indeed, a hoverfly and not some strangely shaped species of wasp.

Speaking of wasps, have you ever tried to eat one?

 <----

If so, how does it taste?

Does it taste :lickinglips: or :miserable:

I love MOHAA.. that was prob the best in my opinion.. Storming the Beaches of Normandy.. That sent me into a WW2 craze gathering and compiliing as much information as possible.. In fact right now I'm studying how the hell Hitler captivated the german people

Posted by: Red Jun 21 2005, 12:11 AM

Well, one way he "tricked" them into following him was putting on massive fairs and parades. He seemed like a king when knights walked beside floats. Also, a nice game for all you WWII gamers is Brothers In Arms, probably the all time best game. Ever. Also, it is based on real people and real events. I remember finding two guys blowing up some german buildings with a Bazooka, and then reading the unlockables and finding out from an actual after action report that those two troops had stormed Nazi filled buildings using a rifle and machine gun and then after coming out the cafeteria door (Filled with 15 Nazi's) and shot bazooka shots at buildings. 100% realistic.

Posted by: Channler Jun 21 2005, 02:26 AM

I have that game, it was fun but you couldn't shoot anything.. And I've shot a Enfeild (SP) its much more accurate then that garand.. they should be fairly close

I've seen a movie about that... On a school in America, a teacher had read many books and studied Hitler, and made a experiment on the students that they didn't know...

Through disiplin and much more he made them act different and trusted each other and of course the teacher. They found a logo to their 'croup' thingy and started taking it all seriously and bla bla... In the end they were totally under his control.. Little hard to explain, but the movie is very good...

Think its called 'The Wave' or something wink.gif

Can someone tell me what England/GreatBritian/Britian is called?

Is it all of thoes things? Or is it just one of them?

Posted by: 9of9 Jun 22 2005, 11:02 PM

England is England.

England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland all constitute the United Kingdom. Great Britain is practically the same thing - the words UK and GB are often used synonymously; in actual fact, I think they differ by a few islands between them... not sure.

Never ever confuse 'England' with 'Britain' - the Scots and the Welsh tend to get a bit upset about these things.

Hope this answers the question somewhat tongue.gif
Where is Macedonia anyway? For some reason the name makes me think of Alexander the Great, was he from Macedonia?
No he was from Brazil. He conquered all the other South American countries as well.

:lmao:

I believe Macedonia is a country near Crete. My great grandfather had four sons that were all from Crete but had different passports to fish in different countries. It took us decades to figure out where they were all from. First we thought Venice, then Greece, then Macedonia and then we figured out he was from Crete.

Posted by: 9of9 Jun 23 2005, 05:16 PM

I think Macedonia was somewhere around Greece or Yugoslavia...

Ever read of Ashoka?

Posted by: 9of9 Jun 23 2005, 06:30 PM

Someone vaguely related to India. I think.

Posted by: gamer10 Jun 23 2005, 06:33 PM

Actually he's a lot more than just vaguely related to India.

He was an Emperor who did a lot of conquering there, until he switched to Buddhism. Also under his rule, Buddhist teachings spread to many parts of Asia.

The movie on him is very nicely made as well.

Emperor Ashoka

Ashoka (also sometimes transliterated as "Asoka"), the grandson of Chandragupta – the founder of the Mauryan dynasty – and the son of Bindusara, came to the throne circa 268 B.C. and died approximately 233 B.C. He is chiefly known from his series of rock and pillar inscriptions, which are found scattered in various parts of India and provide important information about his reign and policies. After eight years of rule, he waged a fierce war against the kingdom of Kalinga (Orissa of today) and was so horrified at the carnage he had caused that he gave up violence and turned to Buddhism.

In his efforts to propagate Buddhism, Ashoka built shrines and monasteries and inscribed Buddhist teachings on rocks and pillars in many places. He sent missionaries to countries as remote as Greece and Egypt; his own son, a monk, carried Buddhism to Sri Lanka, where it is still the major religion. Despite Ashoka's vigorous exertions of faith, he was tolerant of other religions. The empire enjoyed remarkable prosperity during his reign.

Some Indian historians think that his policy of peace led to the downfall of the Mauryan empire, which fell apart after his death. He was soon largely forgotten by Indian tradition and only remembered in Buddhist circles as a great patron of the faith. With the deciphering of his inscriptions during the 19th century, he took his rightful place in world history as one of the most benevolent rulers of antiquity.

http://www.kamat.com/kalranga/budhist/2327.jpg

The splendid monolithic stone pillars on which many of his inscriptions are engraved, are among the masterpieces of Indian art, and the capital atop one of them, the Sarnath Pillar, inspired the use of back-to-back lions that is the Indian national emblem (shown in the picture above.) The 24-spoked Ashoka-chakra, which has found its way into the Indian national flag also a fine artifact of Ashoka's period.

It was really warm, our hotel had air conditioning yet it was still over 80 degrees fahrenheit.

Anyway:

There were like fifteen computer cafes on one darn street!

Nearly everyone uses a motorbike. We used a taxi though .

There wasn't a single second when I was outside that I didn't hear someones horn go off.

No one follows the traffic laws, except for the stop lights, probably because there are police men directing the traffic by the street lights.

I'm tired of the stopid people who don't think global warming is real or does any signifigent damadge to the earth. Every ten years, the entire world raises two degrees. The entire Earth! Worst thing is that certain people (cough Bush cough) could just admit that they can do something about it and just spend some of their unlimited amounts of money.

Fleetwood Mac (Second Place)

I'm not talking about America, I'm talking about the multi-billion doller corperations that wouldn't notice if they lost a million or two. It just seems like some people could make a differance with their money instead of just hoarding it and taking money they don't need from lower class citizens. Seriously, how could it hurt the economy by spending money you took from them to make sure they don't choke to death in a hundred years?

I was so annoyed when I first heard about that on the news. It's bad enough to give a position of power in one of the worlds most powerful countries to a chimp, but when that chimp allows destruction of the environment and has the nerve to call it the "Healthy Forest Act", it's even worse.

That sounds like vomit-worthy patriotic propaganda to me.

Anyway, I'm not sure about great movie moments, but I've been watching the Godfather series recently, and when Vito Corleone gets shots I was just shocked, since I hadn't seen anything like that coming, and I thought it was a really well executed scene.

Actually, it wasn't really propaganda. It was just an entertainment film. The first one to earn the rating PG-13. Also I like the scene in the film "The Village" where that one guy gets stabbed, and I can't even remember his name. It was also very very well done.

I suppose I don't really mean propaganda, as such, it's just that it's really a typical feature of American film-making to show americans in that kind of ridiculously patriotic way (I mean, who would be thinking about their country, nevermind singing a song about it, if you're about to be shot?)

Some of us are very devoted to our country and are having our lives and future entangled in it.

I for one, if ever shot down over enemy teritory (i plan to be a pilot in the USAF) would think of first, My God, 2nd My Family, and 3rd my country. And while thinking about my country I might not bust out in a patriotic melody (because I cant sing worth crap) but I would surely do somehting to publicly state my love for my country.

BUt i don't know how i would look at death, perhaps i'd try to survive, but perhaps i'd decide watever is after might be better. Maybe i'd be reborn in a TES type world tongue.gif. the concept of reincarnation is cool

Just because you wouldnt do it for your country doesn't mean they're aren't others..
Some might be thinking of their country, but I'm pretty sure that would be a minority. It's easy to say you'd think about things in that order when you're in a position to think about it at your leisure, but when a person is about to be killed, it's very hard to predict what they might be thinking. In virtually every case, I would think it would be a mix of fear, thoughts of escape, and thoughts of loved ones, though it's hard to say since a person won't exactly be thinking very rationally when they're about to be killed.

Anyone seen War of the Worlds? Its freaking awsome, I actually liked it better then the book.

Chumbaniya:

Well those soldiers at Iwo Jima must of been acting very irrational then to bring up the stars and stripes over the battlefield while getting shot at... Seems that most of them died to to hoist it up there.

To me that seems kinda patriotic, even in the face of death.

That guys-hoisting-USA-flag-while-getting-shot-at reeks of enscened propaganda kvleft.gif

My only few words I have for this subject:

GO AMERICA!!!

Posted by: jonajosa Jun 30 2005, 11:17 PM

If America got attacked you would see me on the news first holding my SKS trying to take out a few of the Martian... people. Im defending my country til the end.

I just find it odd how many people are Anti-patriotic.. It's sad

Nationalism is a touchy point but it almost seems that we need to revert back to that idealogy more.

Simply put, I love my country. You should love yours to.

(Now the idiots of the bureacracy(SP) is something else, and no I'm not anti or for bush.. He's the president by choice of american voters, and there for he was chosen to lead)

BobV: Call it whatever you want but simply put, It happened, and almost all those men died doing it. Those men are hero's to me.

JonaJosa: Well I got a revolver, think that will help?

So you have no opinion because he was chosen by the people and that's all you need to know? you have to have some opinion, unless you are that apathetic. (not trying to be rude/mean/offensive)

Posted by: gamer10 Jun 30 2005, 11:44 PM

My opinion is

MAKE ME KING OF THE WORLD

That's about it

Posted by: BobV Jul 1 2005, 12:01 AM

My opinion is, make me emperor of the whole frigging universe.

Posted by: Wolfie Jul 1 2005, 12:08 AM

My opinion is, blow 'em all up and let {deity} sort 'em out

Posted by: Dantrag Jul 1 2005, 12:20 AM

Surely it was irrational to get killed putting up a flag? How is a flag worth someone's life?

Anyway, I'm not anti-patriotic at all (at heart I'm fairly proud to be english) but I would place my own safety and my friends and family above my country any day.

Posted by: Dantrag Jul 1 2005, 05:22 AM

Posted by: Channler Jul 1 2005, 06:03 AM

Yea, but reading it is half the fun... when your not swamped

Posted by: Dantrag Jul 1 2005, 06:11 AM

I have a feeling I'm going to have alot of reading to catch up on after this weekend...
