Chorrol.com _ Oblivion _ Morroblivion

This is something that does not exactly fit anywhere. But this seems as good/bad a place as any, so why not?

For those who do not know, Morroblivion is a modding project for Oblivion. It recreates Morrowind using the Oblivion game. Basically, it is a series of mods for Oblivion, that add Vvardenfell, and all the quests and characters from Morrowind. You have to own both Oblivion and Morrowind to use it.

https://tesrenewal.com/ is where you can find Morroblivion, as well as other cross-game projects like Skywind and Skyblivion.

You can download the core Morroblivion mod files http://tesrenewal.com/forums/morroblivion/mods/753. There are also links to a handful of other mods you will need to run it, like OBSE, Elys Silent Voice, etc...

There are a number of optional mods you can use that come bundled in with the main pack, like an improved map.

There are also some standalone mods people have made for Morroblivion. You can find most of them with a search on Morroblivion on the Nexus. You can also find a https://tesrenewal.com/forums/morroblivion/mods/2031, but a lot of the links are old and now broken.

https://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/49190 - makes some improvements to the game world, adding more buildings, landscape effects, and so on. Basically it makes the world seem less empty.

https://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/40795 - this allows you to officially move into Gilnith's shack after you do the Tax Collector quest in Seyda Neen. I had trouble with this. After taking ownership I was away for a few days. I came back to find that I was no longer the owner, and it was considered stealing for me to get my stuff out of the chest inside. So don't use it.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/ai3zxnekn76fd5a/Morroblivion_Portal_to_Vvardenfell_v1.0.zip/file - Automatically gives you a spell that creates a portal between the Morroblivion game world and the regular Oblivion game world. Very handy for going back to Oblivion to pick up modded items that have been placed in containers in the Imperial City or such places in Cyrodiil. Or to buy modded spells from mod-added NPCs, and stuff like that.

Because it uses the Oblivion engine, it plays just like Oblivion does. You use the Oblivion face generator to create your character. It has the Oblivion skills and spell system. It levels up like Oblivion. It uses the same animations as Oblivion.

But it has new meshes for all the Morrowind items and such, like buildings, ships, and so on. It has the Morrowind plants, though alchemy still works the same say it did in Oblivion (since the Oblivion game engine). The music is the Morrowind music, which is really nice. They even kept the original Morrowind voices for many, if not all characters. You need the Silent Voice mod because not everything is voiced, so sometimes you will just get text when you talk to people. But the generic greetings are in the Morrowind voice actors.

There are also Morrowind-style weapons and armor, like Chitin and Netch Leather armor, Nordic Ringmail, and so on. The Imperial Armor is the Morrowind style, except for the shields, which are the standard Oblivion Imperial shields.

It really feels like playing Morrowind, but without the less than stellar graphics and awful animations.

I have been playing January in Morroblivion for a few days now. She has been exploring the area around Seyda Neen, and is living in Gilnith's Shack (she completed the tax collector quest and killed Gilnith). Today she swam out to Fort Firemoth, and has been battling her way through the hordes of skeletons outside. She now has just over 1700 iron arrows that she took off of dead skeleton archers.

I am not sure if Firemoth has a quest that you are supposed to start in Seyda Neen by talking to the guy in the Census Office or not. I will have to go back and check.

Thanks for providing another great resource of helpful info. I greatly enjoyed Oblivion's engine, leveling and gameplay. Never touched Morrowind, and watching a few vids of TES3 gameplay kept me away - so this seems like a wonderful idea.

Posted by: treydog Aug 25 2019, 12:57 AM

You get the Siege at Firemoth quest from Sell us Gravius. Name still makes me laugh

Posted by: SubRosa Aug 25 2019, 03:02 AM

I looked it up to find out it was Sellus, not the guy you talk to once you get off the boat and do your chargen stuff with. I never noticed the play on Sell Us' name! laugh.gif

I finished Firemoth. It was fun at first. But the giant rat horde with its guaranteed diseases was annoying. So was the final big boss. He healed all damage every second. In the end I got so annoyed with it that I just used the console to kill him. If the game wants to cheat, I can do it too.

Aside from that goulish swimmer, MW looks nice and January looks quite happy in its swamps and badlands. Haha, RATS. . . it's always rats!

Posted by: TheCheshireKhajiit Aug 26 2019, 11:03 PM

So does it still have the “potato faces” or did they fix that?

Posted by: SubRosa Aug 27 2019, 12:18 AM

It is Oblivion, so potato faces and horse faces are evident. But they really did make an effort to do the best they could with what the game allows. Better than vanilla Oblivion.

Posted by: SubRosa Aug 28 2019, 02:09 AM

Acadian: I think the swamps are my favorite part of Morrowind. They have a very lively feel. Plus I cannot feel the humidity or get stung by the mosquitoes...

January looks like she's quite enjoying MorrowindyBlivion. On the rats, I know what you mean. Most of the rats Buffy sees in Tamriel are bigger than she is - or at least outweigh her. tongue.gif

I discovered something a few days ago. Morroblivion uses the Morrowind system of determining your total Magicka, which is your Intelligence x1 plus a few other things. Oblivion uses Int x 2. So I created a mod to change it to the Oblivion way. Now magic is a lot easier.

A guar! They did a wonderful job with the guar in ESO.

I love the pensive pose January is using in some of these shots.

Shady Slim is one wierd looking. . . thing.

Ahh, dungeon crawling!

The Cast When Used enchantments in Morroblivion seem to be broken, and none of them work. http://www.mediafire.com/file/r0r0182vp5q235y/Oblivionized_Enchants%2528V1%2529.zip/file is a mod that is supposed to fix that. I am trying it out today.

Looks like it works pretty good. A lot of the enchantments are offensive spells on pieces of clothing. Morrowind did that a lot. They did not work in Morroblivion. This mod changes them to protective spells instead. So a Firebolt ring becomes a Resist Fire ring. Now those things are useful again.

I came across an odd bug with Clannfears. They go aggressive when they see you, and the combat music starts. But they will not actually attack. They just stand still. Even when you are hitting them. Apparently it is an issue with them having the wrong animations. If you look down to the bottom of https://tesrenewal.com/forums/morroblivion/morroblivion-problems/3097 there is a link to a fix of new animation files. I have not found more clannfears to test it on yet though.

I have also been having some issues of CTDs of late. This is a common complaint with Morroblivion. The thought seems to be that there is so much stuff in the game world that it slows people's machines to a crawl, and then causes the CTDs. There are a number of suggested fixes.

https://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/9139/ - this is a mod that wipes the game's cached data when you leave a cell. The idea is to keep down on the data the game has to manage. You can do it manually with the console, using the PCB command. But no one's got time for that!

Completely turning off Distant Land in the game's video options is another suggestion. Which makes everything hazy after a certain distance so you cannot see anything far away. I tried that and got a CTD within 10 minutes. Then I got a CTD while inside a tomb that literally only had 4 rooms.

I finally used https://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/15781 to generate all new LODs. So far I have had no CTDs. But I might have simply not played long enough to get one.

Finally, I am having an odd issue with Mudcrabs and Rats being friendly. At first I thought it was my fault, as I had one of my friendly animal mods active when I started the game. But I shut that off a week ago, and am still seeing this.

What is weirder is that the rats were hostile to me at first. But sometime in the last few days they just started ignoring me. Even if I walk up to them and click on them, they do not react to me at all. I looked them both up in the construction set, and the mudcrabs are set to have an aggression level of 5, which is really low. So they are not supposed to attack you. The rats, OTOH, have an aggression level of 100, the highest it can go.

I have not added any mods that affect animals, or their behavior, or even any NPCs at all. So I am not sure what is going on.

I hope you can get the minor bugs with MOB sorted out. If anyone can, you'd be the one. laugh.gif

Darn, was hoping it might have occurred to Jan to remove her armor before showering. tongue.gif

Beautiful scenics! I especially liked the Bitter Coast Sunset. happy.gif

Posted by: SubRosa Sep 9 2019, 12:43 PM

Jan is very picky about who she allows to see her showering. Even I don't get to see that!

Those animation files I downloaded worked on the Clannfear. I encountered one yesterday, and it attacked like it should.

The plot thickens on the friendly rat front. Experimenting has shown that rats are friendly when there are no other hostile critters nearby. But if a hostile creature comes near, the rat turns hostile as well. I can shoot a Cliffracer from long range, and a rat beside me won't turn hostile. So I suspect it has to be in the same cell as the other hostile creature. I am now also finding some Nix Hounds behaving the same way, while other Nix Hounds are always hostile.

I am also glad to say that since I generated new LODs, I have not had any more of those CTDs. So that appears to have fixed that issue.

Posted by: Renee Sep 9 2019, 03:34 PM

What I like about this mod is it looks like the author(s) left the barren areas pretty much alone. It's something I was a little worried about, I wouldn't want to see lush forests in those areas. But the rest of the land looks perfect.

Looks like you and Jan are having some fun. smile.gif I am pretty much addicted to this game now that I've started Igodah up again. Only problem (for me) is all the NPCs are named, which means eventually the action moments become rather rare. For this reason I picked up some Skyrim for the first time this season. Lots of 4ct10n pwn4g3 in that game!

Anyway, Jan looks like Jan is having some fun exploring. Are creatures friendly to her? Or is that guar one of the non-hostile ones? When I start playing this game on PC I'm going to get a mod which makes most non-diseased creatures neutral. Fighting cliffy after cliffy after cliffy after cliffy after cliffy after cliffy after cliffyafter cliffyafter cliffyafter cliffyafter cliffyafter cliffyafter cliffyafter cliffyafter cliffyafter cliffyafter cliffyafter cliffyafter cliffyafter cliffyafter cliffyafter cliffyafter cliffy .... ARRRRRRGHGHGGHGH!!!!! gets especially tedious.

Posted by: SubRosa Sep 9 2019, 09:36 PM

They did their best to faithfully recreate Vvardenfell from the original game. Even down to the hordes of Cliff Racers.

Aside from my weird issues with Rats and now Nix Hounds sometimes being friendly, Guar and Mudcrabs are friendly too. I think those are even supposed to be. Oh, and the Netches are friendly too, as they are in Morrowind. Same with the little Kwama insects with multiple legs, who beat their tails against the ground (edit: Scribs), and the Kwama workers.

I found lists of https://tesrenewal.com/comment/81667#comment-81667. To use console commands on quests, you have to use the formid of the quest, not the name.

Friendly nix hound. Plenty of nix hounds in ESO. A few NPCs have them as pets but most are hostile.

Knock 'em out with the ol' one-two.

Ewww. Jan will want to wash her hands after knocking that one out.

Not inviting decor. Looks like a former pole dancing studio. wink.gif

That dremora looks pissed.

Flying high - wow, that is some serious acrobatics! ohmy.gif

Hey, she's levitating flying! ... Jan really looks good in that kick-ass armor.

Friendly nix hounds, that's something I'd like to see, although cliffies are still at the top of my list! mad.gif

Posted by: SubRosa Sep 19 2019, 10:38 PM

Acadian: The problem with being a monk, is that you have to wash your hands after every fight...

Renee: She's levitating. She finally found someone who teaches the Levitate spell. It is the only way to get to some places in Morrowind. Sadly the Boots of the Apostle do not work. The Levitate on them is broken.

Wow, that ice dude is one big fellow standing near January.

No cliffracers in ESO. From what I hear, that is a good thing.

Plenty of lava pools for butt warming though. tongue.gif

Posted by: SubRosa Oct 24 2019, 01:46 AM

Acadian: One of the little things I love about Morrowind are the door handles. They are triangular, for the Tribunal.

The ice dude is a Frost Astonaut of course. A lot different looking from Skyland.

You are lucky there are no cliffracers in ESO! They are so annoying, because of how many there are. Walking around a corner and seeing 8 of them is not at all unusual. It was a mistake by the devs that made them that plentiful. Apparently the Morroblivion creators decided to recreate all the bugs along with everything else. I made a mod that reduced how many of them appear.

January would not be super without her cape!

Renee: She has had a cape for a while. I liked the backpack she was wearing at first. But a superhero needs her cape after all, for the https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RuleOfCool.

Subrosa'd is a habit you've had for awhile now, of posing your characters next to some sort of large visual sight. So in Fallout games, you'd often put Hecate or whomever next to billboards, for instance. There'd be this huge billboard with one of those silly prewar advertisements (Sugar Bombs or Chryslus or the safety of living in some Vault), and then there's your toon standing next to it. biggrin.gif

I'll have to find some examples later...

January is a very good looking Nord gal. Must have taken some time to to get the face. Is that chitin armor from Vvardenfell Imports? Good armor shop mod. If you able to add the armor to the levelled list this would be worth looking into.

Flying fish have been in every TES game since Morrowind. You could say Daggerfall too but in Daggerfall they're stuck in walls.

Posted by: SubRosa Nov 24 2021, 06:01 PM

Acadian: My previous version of January in Morroblivion was a Breton. This time I wanted to change things up a bit.

Those are non-Darryl skellies. I don't see January summoning in the dead. Unless maybe it was Blood Raven.

Renee: That is Chitin Armor that she is wearing. Remade for the Oblivion engine of course, like the other Morrowind armors in Morroblivion.

Right now she does not levitate, but I am sure she will be getting a spell to do it eventually.

I know the kind of pictures you mean. They are basically tourist pics. Look at me next to the pyramids, or Red Mountain, or Cloud Ruler Temple. You are right, those are a trademark of mine.

macole: I worked for hours to get her face right. Most of the time I just ended up abandoning my efforts and starting over. In the end I wound up importing my previous version of January, who was a Breton. Unfortunately the faces change when you go to a different race. So I still had to spend a lot of time working on the face afterward. And it took two tries doing so. The first one didn't work out.

I never thought to look for anything like that.

As I mentioned in the Morrowind mods thread, I updated to Morroblivion 0.65. It does have an optional .esp to add a transport between Morrowind and Cyrodiil. It puts an NPC on the ship you arrive on at Seyda Neen, who you can talk to to go back to Cyrodiil. That puts you at the Imperial City Market District Gate. There is a Khajiit standing there at the gate who will likewise transport you back to Cyrodiil. It seems a little odd that that you would show up there. The IC Docks would have made more sense, I think. But it does work.

That is also part of a Chargen mod. I am not sure what the character generation part of that does just yet. Ok, I experimented with that, and the character generation part of it is not working for me at all. The mod is supposed to start you with an empty cell and give you the option to start the game in Cyrodiil or Morrowind, with added options of doing each the vanilla way, or a faster way. But it just does the regular Morrowind start for me every time for me.

I also found an improved map mod today. https://morroblivion.com/forums/morroblivion-mod-releases/rel-new-hd-map is in 4k, and perhaps best of all, the locations seem to all line up correctly.

Edit: Well, I gave up on version 0.65. The Distant LOD land was not appearing! The distant trees were there, but no actual land. After spending about an hour fighting with it, I just removed it and reinstalled version 0.64. Now I have distant land again!

People have been using Morroblivion together with loads of other big mods like TWMP or Valenwood or Elsweyr or all of it with OOO and whatnot on top! Phew! Wow! I wonder how long it took them to get it all ironed together... blink.gif

I might try it... But I wonder whether it will actually be better to have a separate setup for running Morroblivion, since I intend to play it with a different character anyway. So it will be a different game, perhaps even a completely new Oblivion installation directory without all the junk that I've been throwing into the current one. ohmy.gif If it will even work - Windows seems to remember things and only allow you to have a single instance of Oblivion, because of course who in their right mind would ever want to have several installations? kvleft.gif

Posted by: SubRosa Nov 29 2021, 12:27 PM

You could have a separate Oblivion installation. The only caveat is that no matter how many you have, they will all use the .ini files and save files located in your User\Documents\My Games\Oblivion folder. Also they will also use the load order found in Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\Oblivion. So you just have to make backups of those files for each instance of Oblivion, and swap them out according to which one you want to play.

Posted by: Lena Wolf Nov 29 2021, 01:23 PM

Yes, you are right - it should not be an issue for playing, after all you can just make a shortcut to start up the appropriate version of Oblivion, and in fact I do this already. But it doesn't work for TES4ll and similar tools that "automatically know" where your Oblivion is located. They all automatically get it wrong, and I can't find the environment variable in the registry that they are using.

But never mind, this is just an aside. Not needed for playing! biggrin.gif

You can get around the issue with TES4ll and the like by simply renaming your game installs. Use the name C:\Oblivion for whatever one you are currently playing. Then others something like C:\OblivionElsewyr, C:\OblivionValenwood, etc... When you swap out the load order and ini files, simply change the name of your main game folder as well.

It is a lot of juggling however.

Posted by: Lena Wolf Nov 29 2021, 01:36 PM

Yes, this is exactly what I ended up doing. When I first installed GOG Oblivion, I picked the Galaxy version installed in C:\Games\GOG Galaxy\Oblivion. Then later I changed my mind and switched to a plain GOG version - installed via GOG in C:\Games\GOG\Oblivion. I then uninstalled Galaxy still using official tools. But when I installed TES4ll later, it kept looking for Oblivion in GOG Galaxy folder even though that whole folder was long gone from my computer. I had to rename things to recreate the original path used for Galaxy! It makes no difference for playing as long as you keep the shortcuts up to date, but it is rather annoying - and a lot of juggling.

January just finished the entire Imperial Cult questline in Morroblivion. Like a lot of faction questlines, there was a lot of fetch quests early on, mostly for alchemical ingredients. But also for donations, which was interesting. But by the time I started it January was richer than Croesus, so she just instantly paid for it all herself. The later quests were fun though. A lot of rescue missions and smiting evildoers. The sort of thing January can really sink her wings into.

Now she is level 17, has a fame of 28, and is about to visit Caius Cosades to get started on the main quest. Only 46 hours and 40 minutes into the game! laugh.gif

I might do most of the Imperial Legion quests with her as well. She is not much of an army girl. But the idea of doing the Legion + Imperial Cult sort of creates a paladin gameplay, which is definitely up her alley. I skimmed over the Legion quests, and did not like some. Those distasteful ones are all from a single questgiver, so I might just never do those. I am sure that means she can never finish the questline. But it ends with you fighting the current head of the Morrowind Legion in a duel to the death. Which January would never do anyhow. So that is not really a problem.

Having the high ground won’t save him from the Storm below.

Skeletons, skeletons and more skeletons!

Posted by: Lena Wolf Dec 13 2021, 12:16 PM

You know, it always makes me wonder where the skellies keep their loot. I mean, when you kill some, they often turn out to have additional weapons, gems or money on them, but for the life of me I can't figure out where they're hiding them. Jewellery still makes sense somewhat, but everything else... it's just odd. wacko.gif

Good job tackling those skellies, January! Although Lena prefers a mace on such occasions even though her skill with blunt weapons is rather low. But it seems you don't need much skill for that - a heavy blunt object colliding with a pile of bones... Boom! biggrin.gif (Or am I confusing it with a mod or another game? I don't remember! laugh.gif In some games/mods it makes more of a difference than in others.)

Posted by: SubRosa Dec 17 2021, 05:52 PM

Acadian: Everyone has a bone to pick with January...

Lena Wolf: Maybe skeletons keep their gold coins slotted between each of their vertebrae?

I don't think the Elder Scrolls games care about what you attack skeletons with. D&D had bladed weapons do half damage, and I think piercing ones do none.

I just finished the Morroblivion main quest. It was difficult, because of the quest structure itself. Apparently I missed a dialogue option with the Urshilaku Wise Woman, and because of that it did not advance the main quest. I did not realize this, because the way the quests have been working, when you finish one, it does not automatically start the next quest in the line. You have to remember where you have to go to start the next quest.

So I just did that. And it did not start the next quests. So I started them with the console. By the time I realized I may have missed some dialogue with the Wise Woman, I had finished the next couple of rounds. Then I went back and talked to her, and found the dialogue options I had missed. That pushed things forward.

So that got me to the point where I have to talk to the Arch Canon to talk to Vivec. She told me to come back when I had become the Hortator. Which I had already done. I had to go back to the Wise Woman, go through some more dialogue, and go back to the Arch Canon. She told me the same thing. Then I found another dialogue option for her, where she acknowledged I was the Hortator, and finally sent me on. Grrr.

So January finally met Vivec, and he gave January Wraithguard. I was not sure what I was going to do next, vis a vis Vivec. My last character to do Morrowind was Persephone, and she is not the forgiving sort. She did not hesitate to kill him. But January is a nice person. She does not expect people to be perfect. But even she could not forgive Vivec for living. So she killed him. It was a great fight. The hardest in the game.

Afterward she found what was listed as a Unique Dwemer Artifact in Vivec's chamber. So she picked it up. From there I learned it was part of an optional quest where you could kill Vivec and go to Yagrum Bagarn and have him turn the artifact into Wraithguard. But I already had Wraithguard. I did try talking to Yagrum, and that started his quest. That is when I found out that the Wraithguard that Vivec had given me before I killed him was working fine. So in the end I used the console to force that quest to end.

Then I was off to Dagoth Ur. But the door was sealed off. I could not see anyway to open it. There were no more quests to do. So I had to use the noclip command to get to the door and go inside. After doing my business and destroying the giant robot, I found the way out was likewise blocked off. Again I had to noclip to get out. Oi!

I finished Tribunal yesterday. It is my first time ever doing it. It was kind of blah. The writing really makes no sense. You are prompted to go there when Dark Brotherhood assassins start coming after you. There you find that it was King Helseth who sent them. So then the game expects you to A - Kill Helseth or B- do a bunch of quests to protect him and his rule.

Naturally the game goes with option B. Riiight.

Then it is the same with Almalexia. The only way to advance through the main quest of Tribunal is to work for her. Nevermind that she and the other members of the Tribunal murdered you in a past life in order to steal the power of Lorkhan and make themselves false gods. I didn't kill Vivec and Dagoth Ur just to give Almalexia and Sotha Sill a free pass. I only went there to kill them both and finish the job.

I have not done Bloodmoon, but I don't think I will. I have done it a couple of times in Morrowind already. Instead I think it is time to move to regular Oblivion with a new character.

Tribunal’s downfall was that it came after Morrowind; hard to beat that story.
I too felt the same about Tribunal plot line. Save let Vivec live only to execute Almlexia; made no sense at all. That’s why I went back to Vivec City and killed Vivec. Now the two stories have balance.

In my latest play through of Morrowind/Tribunal I used Antares' Tribunal Main Quest mod (good mod btw), which poses the opposite dilemma. Why kill Vivec and let Almalexia live? Well there was a reason but it felt odd.

Google? Heck, what does her PipGirl say about getting around in there? Oh. . . nvm.

Posted by: SubRosa Jan 4 2022, 07:52 PM

Something I forgot to mention which I really liked about Tribunal, is that in a couple places is fortells the Oblivion Crisis. More than one character prophecies a coming apocalypse when the gates of Oblivion would be thrust open, and armies of the deadra would spill forth to bring an end to the world. So clearly at the point where they were writing Tribunal, they had the basic plot of Oblivion figured out.

Yes. Cliff racers are seen in the sky in some areas but there's no interaction between them and players. Cliff striders, however, attack quite readily.

Posted by: SubRosa Jul 13 2022, 02:30 AM

Renee: Morroblivion is essentially just a mod for Oblivion. It is the Oblivion game, plus plugins that add Vvardenfell. So it plays exactly the same as regular Oblivion. Arrows and all.

All I have ever had to do is go in my inventory and select the arrows, then deselect them. That makes them disappear from where they are sticking out of your body.

Acadian: Those Acadian sunsets are the best ones in Morrolandia.

It is cool to see that they have cliff-racers in ESO. Do they fly? It looks like they are ground-based creatures. I am guessing the ones that you see high in the sky are essentially the same as the hawks you see in Skyrim. Not real monsters the game expects you to fight, just there to look at it.

Cliff racers are simply aerial decoration. Cliff striders though, do engage. They lurk on the ground but when they attack, they fly into you as a 'gap closer' which includes a knockdown/stun. Though I've never played MW, there clearly is lotsa carryover into ESO. Guars are common in many areas - even as pack guars or mounts. Silt striders can be seen in the province of Vvardenfel. And Balmora is also in ESO.

Nice to see Blood Raven using one of your 'go to' hairstyles and armors - she looks great.

The worst part of original cliffracers was the way they stacked on you. You could only attack the nearest, because all the others were behind it, and more would queue up to get a turn at you as you fought. Not difficult, but demoralizing, as it promised to be unending. Never quite that bad, but you couldn’t be sure.

And talking of demotivation, does Morrowblivion alter the “can’t hit with the weapon, because low skill” mechanism? I was always finding myself in that catch-22 of not getting experience because I didn’t already have any.

Morroblivion is Oblivion. So there's none of that Morrowind nonsense here. biggrin.gif It's all normal Oblivion game mechanics.

Also you don't have to sleep to get your magicka up. It regenerates. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Renee Jul 15 2022, 01:32 AM

The base game isn't so bad, come on now!

Here are some of the things I heard about Morrowind for years and years: "That first mudcrab we meet in Seyda Neen always destroys us. Because this game is so much harder than Oblivion!" ... and also... "Everything is dice-rolls, Renee, it's not really you who is hitting the enemies, it's your characters, and you'll die over and over and over as you miss and miss and miss!!"

So I believed this. When I began playing MW in 2018, I expected the first crab would mop the floor with my character, and it would only get worse from there! indifferent.gif But it's not really that bad at all.

1). Choose Major skills which coincide with the weapons my character will use, and

2). Go into battle with plenty of Fatigue, (really important)

3). Go headstrong into battle. Do not back down, especially with melee-based characters. Get those hits in early, before the enemy does. Make sure to dodge. When the enemy takes a bite or makes a swing, try to stay out of its range.

Following those three rules, I was surprised to find the startgame can actually be easier than I thought. Fatigue makes a huge difference when it comes to combat. Those others who warned me had characters which missed all the time probably because they were low on Fatigue, probably due to too much running around. Since my characters tend to walk a lot, they've always got plenty of Fatigue.

And this goes both ways. Enemies who attack and miss attack and miss over and over... it's a slippery slope down for them, too. Because they're using up their Fatigue.

Regarding magic: Yes, magic doesn't regenerate in the base Morrowind game, but this is also true for magic-using NPCs as well. They cast and they cast, while we dodge and avoid. Pretty soon they can't cast anymore. They break out whatever weapon they've got (usually something spindly). They make a rush at my character. From that point, I've usually got them. viking.gif

And the thing nobody ever mentions: Magicka doesn't regenerate in real-time, but the magic in items does. Therefore, if we're wearing a ring which heals us, that ring is going to regenerate the magic our characters cannot.

Not that I'm trying to convince anybody here. bigsmile.gif It's just that so many times I've heard how impossibly hard MW is, and yes, it is challenging, it is difficult. But my experience is, it's also not as impossible as so many gamers told me in the past.

You don't have to work too hard to sell me on Morrowind. The extreme difficulty at the beginning adds to the excitement. There were a couple of things that disappointed me in Morrowind. the biggest was... no not the combat, I rather like the combat. No it was the horrid segmented bodies, ugh. The other was that it didn't include all of Morrowind.
Now if only it looked like Oblivion. whistling.gif But then that's what Morrobilvion is for.

Sorry Renee, my comment was tong-in-cheek - I didn't seriously mean it. Although I do prefer Oblivion, it isn't because of the game mechanics. Like Macole, I find aesthetic aspects insufficient to really bind me to it. And that is because they didn't have good enough computers back then! So it's nobody's fault. biggrin.gif

I'm sorry too, I guess. I keep thinking I went a little too far up above, like maybe I'm coming across as preaching. I hemmed and hawed a bit whether I should post that. But I am glad I did in a way. Just because I want to spur some discussion.

And it's also true, or at least it was back in the days of Beth's old forums. "If you think Oblivion is hard, DON'T try Morrowind, Renee!" bigsmile.gif I was told a lot of mistruths or at least half-truths. I wish I could go back, just to set the record straight. Morrowind is mostly hard if we approach it in the wrong ways.

Same is true of Oblivion as well, especially as the game levels up into the teens. Agreed? Disagree? -- Somebody like me who doesn't like touching the difficulty slider, quickly found herself getting into 10-minute fights with goblin warlords and all sorts of creatures which literally weren't in the game a week ago. laugh.gif There are ways to avoid this (and without mods), but it wasn't until after a few months of play that I learned what these ways were.

As my game leveled upwards, I quickly lost interest in Oblivion, which was awful because it was my favorite game at the time. But as the game leveled up, there was too much challenge, and not enough fun. mad.gif

For me, the solution was not using all 7 Major skills. Seems counterproductive, but that was the answer in my Playstation-at-the-time game. Suddenly, I could play all I wanted, hundreds of hours*, while keeping the slider in the middle. The game became more enjoyable for me.

Ah lunch time! Sorry if I'm rambling.

*--- Err, until the A-bomb struck, that is. unsure.gif

Yeah, the teens are probably the hardest levels to play, especially if you level up quickly and don't have all the nice gear yet. But whether the fight is hard or not, depends on the way you approach your enemy and whether you are playing to your character's strength. Ever played Dark Souls? Now that is hard.

I am not a strong gamer by any stretch of imagination, yet Lena Wolf is an assassin mage, which is a rather weak build. She has little strength and only moderate agility, having chosen to invest into magic instead, but she isn't an expert mage either because she invested into non-magical skills as well. I never get +5 of anything on levelling up, +3 is the highest I ever get, so you can imagine what she's like.

And yet my difficulty slider sits at 75% and I can even send her out there alone (although having a battlemage like Hauk along does help wink.gif ). She can't take on a goblin warlord head on, she'd be rammed into extinction within seconds. She should stay away from shamans as well, because born under the Apprentice, she has a 50% weakness to magic. So what to do? Play to your strengths. Stealth. Poison. They never see it coming.

This is of course just an example, but you see the idea. And if the battle is too hard, run away! biggrin.gif

I tried playing Morrowind again about a year ago, when I decided to take January there. After a while I just gave up. The deal-breaker for me was alchemy. I hate how picking ingredients work, and then how brewing potions works. Plants are basically containers like chests or barrels, and the ingredient is an item inside that you have to pick up. It did not take long at all before my wrist was literally aching from repetitive strain.

That is not the only thing I do not like about Morrowind (the horrific animations - even for the time the game was made, magicka not regenerating, hitting monsters and being told that you missed because you failed your invisible die roll, or just the way combat became just a matter of standing in one spot and mashing buttons until either I or the monster was dead). Among other things. But that was the final straw.

So from here on out it is Morroblivion all the way for me. Oblivion is far from a perfect game engine. But I vastly prefer it over Morrowind's.

What you'se guys are talking about with leveling is one of those things I don't like about Oblivion. You have to play games with the Majors/Minors in order to build a character who does not get creamed as they level up, because they are leveling up too weak compared to the monsters, who are also leveling up, but stronger. Bethesda makes the only games where you go out of you way to not level up.

My standard trick is to take one weapon skill as a Major, one defense skill (like an armor), and Restoration. Then make the rest of the Majors skills I will never use. Sometimes I will add in a fourth major that I will sometimes use, like Block. When I get training, I only do it for the Minor Skills that I regularly use, because otherwise it will make you level up too fast.

Because I got so sick of the worrying about what skills I am using and will I get a decent bonus, I just made a mod that gives you a +5 in everything every time you level up. It made the game much more enjoyable, because I didn't sweat that stuff anymore.

One thing I really like about Skyrim is how they abolished the whole Major/Minor business, and with it the need to play this silly game with leveling. You just play the game, get better at the things you do, and the monsters don't in general get more powerful than you are as you level up. At least I have never had that problem.

Posted by: Lena Wolf Jul 19 2022, 12:33 AM

It is interesting how perceptions differ. In most games I find my character to become overpowered rather quickly, using standard game mechanics. At least in Oblivion there is some control there, and when I level up, I always select the attributes with a low bonus, preferring +1 or +2 at most. I find that in Skyrim leveling up is way too fast, and I really hate it how you upgrade three swords and suddenly you've leveled up...

Well, I'm exaggerating, but you catch my drift. I actually made a personal mod for Skyrim to stop this ridiculously fast leveling every time you cook a pot of stew.

So I actually select a weak build on purpose. It keeps some challenge in the game without going crazy on the difficulty sliders, and it allows to bring companions along who don't immediately get killed off and also don't make your own combat too easy. I don't want to be able to defeat every enemy every time. Sometimes it's too hard, you have to retreat and rethink, to me that's an advantage.

Hanging around is a thing, apparently. What else are soldiers supposed to do in peace times?

The guar are so darn cute. I modded the game to make them all friendly, so I don't have to fight them.

Thanks to several ongoing fan fictions, I am back in Morroblivion once more. This time I am torn between playing two characters. I created them both, and played each a little so far.

https://i.imgur.com/leET27X.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/ywSjYfx.jpg

Both are characters from the Crow-verse, who will be appearing in future episodes of that show. White Fell is a character who has been mentioned a few times in passing. She is a member of the Chicago-based super team The Sentinels. She is basically a werewolf, with super-senses, fighting, claws, regeneration, etc.. Kind of like their version of Wolverine, only much less ornery (she is from the MidWest, so she is very polite, eh.) She will make a more direct appearance in a future book.

She was originally inspired by the villain from the short story https://www.gutenberg.org/files/13131/13131-h/13131-h.htm. It is old, so it is way past copyrights and free to read. It is a good werewolf horror story

Hwarang is a character I have been working on a lot lately, as he appears in the next Stormcrow book. He's a Korean-American intersex man living in Baltimore, and working as a musician. But when darkness falls and evil is afoot, he becomes... Hwarang! One of the legendary Flower Knights of ancient Korea. He is an arcane archer who rides an electric motorcycle. I am sure Buffy will like him. It helps that I am also currently watching the historical K-Drama Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth as well. The fiction and game character's appearance is inspired by https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5646594/mediaviewer/rm512897280/?ref_=tt_md_3

Well that's really nice to hear that Clavier & I have influenced your latest gaming decision. cool.gif Hopefully you'll have more of a trouble-free experience this time.

If Hwarang is in Mount Vernon, that's a really good spot for a musician. If he's a classical musician the Meyerhoff Concert Hall's right there, and so is the Lyric and a couple other halls. If he's playing the clubs, you know: rock, electronic, etc, there's lots of little places, some nearby, some father away. He's in walking distance of the Metro and Club Charles and Ottobar. Probably some new clubs I'm not familliar with.

Whoa, albino werewolf. 🐺

Posted by: SubRosa Oct 23 2023, 05:52 AM

I picked Mount Vernon because it seemed to be a big music spot, as well as a sort of Gay mecca, like Ferndale is here in The D. He's definitely not a classical musician. Though he does play the chello, double-bass, and bass guitar. He's in a small time band, works part-time at a music store, does some recording session work, and gives music lessons. A real gig-economy type person, scraping by to make ends meet.

Awesomesauce!

Posted by: Acadian Oct 24 2023, 12:14 AM

Yep, Buffy likes Arcane Archers (what she calls Mystic Archers). Diablo II and Oblivion supported that play style fabulously. Skyrim and ESO not so much. Not sure at all about Morrowind.

Posted by: SubRosa Oct 24 2023, 10:09 PM

Morroblivion is just the setting of Morrowind, but using the Oblivion game engine. So it plays essentially the same as Oblivion. You are an archer, and can use spells as you like. They do have magic arrows that you can buy, which will do some extra elemental damage and the like. There is a fletcher's shop in Vivec's Foreign Quarter that has a lot of those for sale.

Posted by: Acadian Oct 25 2023, 04:28 PM

Ah, I see. In Oblivion, Buffy's primary magicks were illusion spells for crowd control. For a bow, she experimented with poison and found it an effective path. Then she tried a short but powerful drain speed enchantment and that was also very effective. Ultimately though, she eschewed both those options and went with some mod tweaking to simply increase the raw damage of her bow and enjoyed that option the most.

As you recall, her destruction abilities were not impressive - suitable for cooking and a few utility tasks. One spell we recall was a very weak but reasonable duration ranged frost spell that she would throw out onto walls or ceilings to provide plenty of light.

Posted by: SubRosa Oct 26 2023, 01:25 AM

I have been going through a lot of those evolutions lately, especially considering the idea of a damage speed enchantment. But in the end I have just settled on the old-fashioned "do a lot of damage and just kill them" approach.

Unfortunately poison is not much of an option in Morroblivion, at least not so far. I have yet to find any ingredients with a Damage Health effect, at least not in the starting area of the Bitter Coast, or at my low level of alchemy. I used to use them to great effect with archers back in the day as well. In Oblivion you could take one walk through the West Weald and come away with enough ingredients for over a hundred Damage Health poisons.

I just took a look through the UESP wiki, and there are no damage health/magicka effects at all in Morrowind. It looks like they had not been invented yet. There are Drain effects, but that is it. I think I will make a mod changing all those to damage.

You are right. Damage health ingredients are extremely rare on Vvardenfell. There are only two samples of a single special ingredient named Poison in Morrowind that will damage health. Pretty much useless for making potions. Tribunal adds four useful damage health ingredients but probably not used in Morroblivion.

Spells in Morrowind is a little better. There are 5 spells that can be bought to damage health and one that damages Magicka.

Always thought the lack of damage health in a potion was kind of odd.

I started having a bunch of CTDs playing Morroblivion a few nights ago. They persisted around a certain area. Any time I tried to go there, the game crashed. So eventually I just gave up and went somewhere else. But they soon started again in the new area.

I tried regenerating the LODs but that did not help.

Then I went inside an already cleared dungeon, and waited for the 3 days +1 hour (I always do the extra hour just to make sure all the exterior cells reset). That seems to have cleared it up, as I have been traveling through the original place it was glitching.

According to the advice I found that suggested trying this, Morroblivion can have a problem with spawns getting corrupted. Waiting 3 days somewhere else to reset the cells clears that up. It looks like it was my problem this time.

Posted by: Lena Wolf Dec 13 2023, 11:31 PM

Oh, this is a good tip about corrupted spawns! Thanks, SubRosa! I've been having a similar problem in my Morroblivion also, right near Balmora! Very annoying.

I am still playing Morroblivion. I upgraded to version 66 (I had 64 before), and to the Dagger Galore mod, which seems to be how they will be patching it going forward.

I noticed some big differences. A lot of the textures seem to have been replaced. I am not sure if the old ones were from Oblivion, or were original to the mod. I suspect they were from Oblivion, and probably included a lot from Quarl's texture pack, which I have. So I was probably using a lot of Quarls textures for Morroblivion before.

The upshot is that it plays a lot smoother now, and with a lot fewer CTDs. I mean a lot. So maybe the textures were causing those for me.

I also found that the Morrowind Music that came with the download of version 66 was causing CTDs. Whenever I enable it, I get CTDs. When I turn if off, they vanish.

Unfortunately it means a slew of new texture and mesh related bugs. I found several cases of missing textures that came from using old texture replacement mods for Morroblivion. I also found some loose mesh files from a previou versions of Morroblivion (all the meshes and textures are now packed in .bsa files). Or they were from a mod. I am not certain. Once I deleted those, that fixed most of them. I still have a missing texture on one small section of the Dwemer Tubes which I have not been able to fix. That's not from an old texture pack. But at least it is small, so easy to ignore.

I also have a new bug of corpses now often falling through the floor. I tried a new set of meshes were supposed to fix it. But that had no effect. Still, not a big deal though.

Finally I went to Solstheim, and found a bunch of pink trees there. So more missing textures. These I eventually fixed by installing the https://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/53077 mod that is listed as being out of date, having been replaced by Dagger Galore I think. But in this case, the older mod was what I needed.

Aside from working through the bugs, I am still enjoying Morroblivion. I am still exploring Solstheim now, and plan to clear it all out and do its MQ and East Empire quests. I created my current character White Fell just for that. She's an axe-wielding Nord, and in the Stormcrow fic she is a werewolf from Minnesota, eh.

Posted by: Lena Wolf Feb 4 2024, 10:47 AM

I played v66 from the start. The problems you are describing were all addressed in the past year, check the threads on morroblivion.com. I wonder may be your issues are still unsolved because you upgraded from v64 rather than made a fresh install.

BTW, v64 used its own textures, and there is even a mod to bring v64 textures into v66. Note that many paths have changed, so mesh or texture replacers from v64 are likely not to work. Many mods won't work either because form IDs in Morrowind_ob.esm have changed here and there. For example, Solstheim Castle kills silt strider travel, among other things. Use with caution.
