Both my dogs are purebred "Louisiana Catahoula Leopard" - they are technically a cur, but are a registered breed. They are not agressive dogs, but are VERY assertive, the owner better be the Alpha in the house.

They are for hunting:

Better scenting than a bloodhound
Webbed feet for swimming
Can and will climb trees to go after prey

(I have a snapshot of one of Dixie's relatives 15 foot up in a tree at the field trials)

They are also for herding:

They are known for herding wild boar, but are just as happy with cattle, horses, sheep, people, etc.

When you buy one they tell you it must be exercised HARD daily or it will eat your house - TRUE! Both my dogs get plenty of exercise, and yet my older dog has literally eaten a lawnmower and the sub floor of my house. Dixie has been eating a pine tree with her baby teeth.

The cats are a feral colony we have been feeding and tending since the year 2000. We trap/spay/neutered them and then released them back into their territory. Without all the kittens the colony has dwindled down to just what you see in the pics (thank goodness!) - the one inside was a kitten from the matriarch's second litter.

LOL, you have a horde like I do. tongue.gif They're all adorable. Is Dixie a pit/pit mix? I love to see responsible owners with those breeds (I've met enough irresponsible owners [including the psycho whose pit attacked my Care Bear] to understand why they have a reputation...which is why I love it when good owners show people that it's not the dog, it's the owner, who decides whether the animal is "good" or "bad"...and the same with Rotts). As for the cats...well, don't they just now they're king/queen of the world? Does Cracker Jax have rott or doberman in him, btw? (I think you told me before, but alas, I haven't had my morning coffee yet, so the memory has no chance... tongue.gif )

Here's my furry pack, starting with the Muffin (who is a mutt...a cross of English Pointer [thus the majority of his markings], black lab and Rottweiler)
Mike/Mr. "Muffin":

IPB Image

Muffin at a parade (he's "dressed" as a cow...I figured he had the fur for it, so I would just add a cowbell, LOL):

IPB Image

Muffin at Halloween:

IPB Image

At the campground (the rope collar is a result of some silly pooch seeing a chipmunk run by the campsite, and taking off after it at top speed...and snapping his collar when he reached the end of his line tongue.gif). Note the docked tail...the crazy backyard breeder that he was rescued from was planning to sell parts of his litter as purebred rotts because half of the litter had rott markings, and must have been hoping he'd "grow into" rott markings so they could sell him too:

IPB Image

Julia/"Care Bear"...I got her last year so Muffin (who I got as a pup) would have a friend, but she's actually older than him:

IPB Image

Wearing her Christmas scarf:
IPB Image

She's a total sweetheart...when I got her, she was 5 years old and had no idea what a toy was, would duck when hands and feet came near her, etc. To this day, if she goes on a tie-out cable, she starts hyper ventilating and whimpering and shaking. :-\ She still loves people, though (dogs' capacity for forgiveness is amazing). She's also very smart, and has done really well in obedience and agility training...I'm planning to show her this February.

As for the felines, this is Zima:

IPB Image

Don't let the innocent face fool you...this cat is anything but. wink.gif She was the single most troublesome kitten I have ever heard of, much less dealt with. She chewed through a maple syrup bottle in the cupboard (THAT was a fun mess...), got her lower jaw stuck inside her collar as she tried to chew it off (the one time I tried to fit a collar to her...), ate every house plant I owned, chewed on my shoes and chewed a hole through one of my chairs when she was teething, worships the big cat to the point of driving him out of his mind, etc., etc. Still, she's my baby. tongue.gif

This is more like her on the average day:

IPB Image

wink.gif

This is Snookie, the oldest of them all (the one Zima tortures/worships); he's almost 10 now:

IPB Image

And this is Dusty, who is Muffin's age (his mother, coincidentally, was a stray who lived at my Mom's placec...she sort of "adopted" Muffin when I got him as a pup [he was in a very bad way, starved to the point where he couldn't stand up even to eat, etc.]...to this day, Muffin loves the cats and will defend them no matter what). This cat is almost as bad as Zima...his favorite trick is finding a bag of marshmallows in the cupboard, pulling it out onto the living room carpet, and leaving the carpet covered in marshmallows (seriously...):

"Please hear me out" is my fave, but "Ahhh delicious" could be a professional pic, really great photography!

Posted by: minque Sep 5 2010, 08:31 PM

Yeah, isn't she gorgeous? Well the breeder's husband is the photographer, and he's very very skilled, he's taken all the pics of the cattery's many cats and they are just awesome
http://www.vimmerskogen.se/

Just look for yourself!

Wegies are AWESOME!!!!!

Those paws are huge blink.gif I suspect she'll be one big cat.

Posted by: treydog Sep 5 2010, 09:38 PM

She is such a beauty! You and the family are going to have a grand time with her- a Norwegian Elven Princess Kitty.

This is a little pic of my dogs. Lottie the Sporting Lucas terrier (White dog on the right) and Maisie the Cairn terrier (Ninja-like black dog on the left)

http://s743.photobucket.com/albums/xx72/hazmick/my%20gang/?action=view&current=Picture014.jpg

And that's the cat, Florrie. If your wondering what she is getting attacked by, it's the belt from a dressing gown.

http://s743.photobucket.com/albums/xx72/hazmick/my%20gang/?action=view&current=Picture030.jpg

This is the cat again. She is in an empty fish tank on my windowsill which doubles as a greenhouse. (The fish tank is adorned with stickers of various creatures such as the frog and some bugs).

Yeah..I loved that one as well, but the cat is ever so sweet.....oh sure the dogs also but the kitty was special

The cat, embarrassed by your flattering comments, retreated into the 'Fortress of Solitude' A.K.A My shirt drawer.

But never fear, Florrie soon found some bravery and went for a nap on my mum's bed.

Meanwhile, Lottie waited for someone do drop some food. (Yes, that is sand on her nose.) tongue.gif

I'm still torn between the aquarium and the bathrobe tie pics of Florrie as my faves. Lottie is a very cute dog, but poor Maisie is not getting the coverage here! Is she camera shy? Lol.

biggrin.gif yeah. It's not that Maisie is camera shy, her dark colour in my dark house with dark floors make it nearly impossible to get a picture of her. I did have a pic of her with really long hair but I can't find it...

found it!! Maisie with long hair, watching the sunset.

Florrie sneaking out the window - great pic !!!!

I love the Yin and Yang pic!!!

"Crazy maisie" I really cute!!!

(And I like Haa-Rei's screenshot)

I'll try and get more pics of suzie, she's feeling a bit under the weather after a...run-in...with both dogs last week, it left the hefty hen a bit shaken (and with several feathers missing).

Suzie's housemate Sarah. We found her in our garden about two months ago looking very hungry and her feet were suffering from fungal infection. She has lived with us ever since and has given us a few eggs as rent. biggrin.gif

A great video with an even greater message. Florrie got spayed years ago and encourages all cats reading this to get spayed now!

Posted by: haute ecole rider Sep 6 2010, 09:56 PM

Adorable video Minque!

My own Zoria is nodding her head. She's a retired breeder and was spayed after her third litter. Now she's living the life of a loafing queen, and loving it! She gets first dibs on everything, including my attention.

Trinity doesn't know what he's missing - he lost his the same time his broken, infected leg was removed. Food is his prime goal in life these days.

yup to the egg, I'm eating it now biggrin.gif . Sarah is an unfortunate victim of the Battery hen business sad.gif so has loads of different breeds mixed into her blood-line. I believe RIR is one of them.

We had a RIR hen in our barn that just showed up one day. We used to take her eggs and crack them into a hot mash for the horse's dinner - made their coat shine like glass.

ROFL !!!! You can't give them more than one egg per day tops, raw egg whites have an antivitamin effect.

Oh noes! Thankfully the hefty hen has halted her egg massacre phase, the run-in with the pooch seems to have put her off doing anything but sitting in the nest laying eggs and eating corn-mix.

ROFL! The hounds of hell are distracted these days by our new garden guest...Mr.Hedgehog! Maisie encountered a hedgehog when she was a pup and ended up with a sore mouth, Lottie however has never met a woodland creature and has no qualms about digging under the garden fence to find our new neighbour. Does she...deposit them in front of you as if she just bought you the Hope diamond? Our feral cat colony started doing that a couple years ago...squirrels, chipmonks, hares, etc - placed on the doormat and whoever the proud donor was preens around like Queen for a Day or something. yup, she's only a small cat so it's generally just mice, baby rats, and shrews. There was an incident with a live pigeon that she released into my mum's bedroom. you wouldn't believe the mess it made...

Thanks for your comment Malx, my cat is crazy...and always getting into trouble but at least she keeps me entertained. I know it'd be a lot more boring around the house without her here. I found her in a camping trailer that my uncle bought three years ago, her and about five others. I bottle fed them every few hours for several weeks until they got old enough to eat regular food and then gave them all of the others away outside a local Walmart, she was the only one I kept. I value her companionship, even if she does tend to be a troublemaker. wacko.gif

Typical cat!

I had to laugh at the one of her on the CRT! Cats everywhere are bemoaning the advent of LCD monitors and flat screen TV's. It's kinda hard to lie on one of those, not to mention they don't generate as much heat.

Of course the young'un's have no clue what the old ones are speaking of . . . Kind of like today's kids and LP's.

Yeah, I just dated myself. biggrin.gif

The only reason I keep that old CRT is for Freya. I stopped using it about a year ago because it is slowly dying (even at max brightness, it is really dim). But it is one of her Favoritest Places In The World, so I cannot get rid of it.

Posted by: Olen Nov 14 2010, 06:55 PM

What a lucky cat... bags to play with and a CRT to lie on. No wonder she looks so happy.

@ Minque - your cats (and house) are beautiful !! Nice woodsy setting! I love the furniture they make for cats, the shelves - some have little houses lined in carpet that the cat can go inside too - whoever thought those up deserves to be a millionaire.

Thats how he got his name. That and he's kinda slow...not the brightest animal we've had but one of the friendliest. He's a good buddy to have around. laugh.gif

Oreo is my favorite, my uncle had a camping trailer and he moved it from where it was. Turns out there were a bunch of tiny kittens in there and the mother couldn't find them...their eyes weren't even open yet so they were less than two weeks old. I bottle fed I think six tiny kittens every few hours for several weeks until they were old enough to eat solid food. It was difficult to keep that many kittens fed since every few hours I had to wake up and feed them, by the time I got them all fed I barely had time to sleep between feedings. In the end all of them made it and turned out healthy, I gave all but one away to good owners and kept my favorite, Oreo.

Oh, all your pets are so cute. I love all of them, but I have to admit, the cat ones are my favorite. happy.gif I'm a sucker for cats... I used to have a lot of pets, when i lived on a farm, but currently I only have one cat, because we're renting and are only allowed up to two cats, no dogs allowed, and we have to pay an extra fee per cat each month... Yeah, we're moving out as soon as possible, because I want more pets! biggrin.gif

SubRosa--Freya is such a good, helpful kitty! Emmy just lays on the sofa when we unpack our groceries, lol. However, she does like helping me write, just like Freya helps you, lol. She also tries to help me read from time to time, or if I'm writing in a notebook, she'll help with that, too. happy.gif

Rick--I love that your cats' names are from TLoR. Awesomeness.

Jacki--I love your black cat--reminds me of my old Bear... (Emmy likes to take over the pc chair, too, lol.)

Such a cute video with a great message, Minque. (And, btw, your cat is beautiful. She reminds me of my cat, Babette, now gone. My 6 year old kitty, Emmy, got spayed in her first year, and I'm so glad I got her fixed because her poor mother had so many litters that her health failed. We were on a farm then, and it's very hard to get cats fixed when you're overrun with them on a farm. I was able to get Emmy spayed only because I had a job and saved money to get her and my black cat, Bear, fixed. I don't have Bear anymore, and the pics of him aren't on my laptop.... Aww Lady Syl! what a sweet tourtoise kitty! Just love that kinda color....So sweet sleeping beside the baby.

Cats are wonderful!

Posted by: Lady Syl Apr 20 2011, 10:22 PM

Cats are certainly the best (no offense to any other animals!). Thanks!

Funny thing--when she went to the vet to get fixed, apparently they had never seen a tortoiseshell colored cat, and they thought it was "weird". And in her file, under color, they put: "None." I find it "weird" that they were so surprised by her look, and I love her colors. Her kitty-mama was the same coloring (I'm her human-mama)... It's nice to find so many apparent cat people here, too! happy.gif

Syl - nice cat, the first picture is a good one smile.gif

Minque - soooo fluffy. She must be getting to be quite a size now?

Posted by: minque Apr 22 2011, 09:27 AM

@Lady Syl

I'm glad you liked my little neuter-spay video! I'm voluntarily working at the local cat-shelter in my town and I really think ppl should castrate their cats! there are so many unwanted ones...Just now I'm in love with a small tourtioseshell kitty-girl named Tina, she's living at te shelter and I so much wish to take her home. Now Indra wouldn'at aprove of course! biggrin.gif Bastian on the other hand would love her!

@grif11

yup she's hairy! Norwegian Forest Cats are quite fluffy! But that's the beauty of them. Now I'm already swimming in hair.... tongue.gif

@Olen

Indra will be one year 26 of may. She already weighs almost 5kg! So yeah! She's kinda big....and will be much bigger. She resembles her dad a huge Norwegian..yes a NFO from Norway...and she will probably be around 7-8 kg when she's fully grown up

Posted by: mALX Apr 22 2011, 08:54 PM

@ Minque - Indra is almost all grown up to cat now, isn't she? (Oh, I just saw below you said May 26 she will be one) - I remember your first pics of her !!! She still has a kittenish face though - gorgeous! Did you have that taken at a photographers or did you do that? I need pics of my puppy, and can't find any place that will take them.

@ Lady Syl - Beautiful children and Emmy cat !!

Posted by: Lady Syl Apr 22 2011, 09:33 PM

Minque: My Emmy isn't fond of other cats most of the time either. I haven't been able to find another cat she liked since Bear left us... I would have a hard time working with animals in a shelter--I would want to take them ALL home with me! biggrin.gif

mALX: Thanks! Yeah, I had to include the pics with my kids because those are two of my favorites, and I don't have many pics of Emmy on my laptop right now... If I can figure out my scanner, I'll post some from when she was a kitten. So precious... smile.gif

I love your brood of animals. That's the one thing I loved most about living on a farm or out in the country--surrounded by nature and animals! I live in a (small) city now, and I hate it. My husband and I want to get back out into the country and have lots of animals! happy.gif

The last pic of Indra is actually taken by her breeder, Lasse Cajander, he is one kind of a cat photographer! His gear are quite professional. He always takes photos at cat shows almost all over the country...

So this one was taken at their place, we had quite a hard time to get her to lie still for those two seconds Lasse needs to get a decent pic!

Oh well she will soom be a year but she is by no means fully grown up! Nowegian Forest cats are not fully grown until they are about 3 years or even four!

Indra still need a lot more fur! Especially around her neck. biggrin.gif

Really? Wow, that's different. Beautiful cats, though. Do you know if it's possible to get a Norwegian Forest cat in the US? They are exquisite. What is their general disposition? Are they generally good with other animals and children, or are they more of a one-person kind of cat?

There are NFC breeders here in the States. You can follow this http://www.forestcats.net/.

My advice to you is to go to cat shows and look for them there. They are not as common as Maine Coon Cats, but are more so than Siberian Forest Cats (which my older girl is).

These three breeds are considered natural long-haired breeds - in other words, they were not created by humans like the Persian, the Turkish Angora, and many other long-haired cat breeds. For that reason, they tend to be quite healthy.

I can't really speak to the NFC purrsonality, but the Maine Coons and Siberians I've met tend to be reserved with strangers, but very affectionate with their families. My Zorie came to me as a retired breeding queen, so it took some time for her to warm up to me. She's fairly independent, but comes to me whenever she wants something. She is the most civilized cat I've ever had - shares the couch, doesn't hog the bed, etc. She does expect the same treatment from you, though, and if you cross over that invisible line, she'll nail you with tooth and claw (gently though, much like with her kittens). Not like my short-haired barn cat, who has to push you all the way into a tiny corner of what ever furniture you're using. That's his idea of sharing!

Hey, thanks! Sounds like a typical loyal, loving but still independent kitty. smile.gif I want another cat, but I'm not sure what kind to get just yet. My Emmy seems to be getting lonely, and I think if she had another pal she might be happier again--especially since I'm so busy with my human children and I don't have as much time to play with her like I used to...

Zorie sounds a lot like my Emmy, btw. biggrin.gif

GAAAH !!! I just checked the pet photographers in this area, they run from 500 - 2000 per session !!! ARGH! Looks like it is back to me snapping pics of my pet's rump or giant eyeball again (or catch her rolling in the mud through a dusty screen).

NFC..or Wegies (I think you call them in US as well?) are quite cool cats, friendly, calm, goes very well with other cats I think. Also just as Hautie says they tend to be healthy.

The breed origins from Norway and was officially a renown Breed in 1970 I think (in Sweden) It's almost the most popular breed here, fir good or for worse. You have to make sure about the breeder that they are good ones, of course..

I love Wegies very much and of course I will recommend you to get one! BUT also as the very wise Hautie said...go to a cat show, there you will meet different cats!

Oh and Siberian cats are gorgeous! Also ppl who are allergic to cats might be able to have a Sib....

Then there is Neva Masquerade of course!....The white Siberian.....mmmmm beautiful

Posted by: haute ecole rider May 18 2011, 08:51 PM

After looking at everyone else's photos of their beloved furpersons, I finally found and uploaded the two shots I've been wanting to post here. Enjoy.

http://i862.photobucket.com/albums/ab186/hauteecole/Cats/ZoriatheQueen.jpg is my Siberian cat. Like the Norwegian Forest Cat, she is a long-haired cat. Because of her solid black color, it's so hard to get a good picture that doesn't look like a black blob with eyes. I think this captures the Queen she used to be (female breeding cats are called queens).

http://i862.photobucket.com/albums/ab186/hauteecole/Cats/TrinitytheKnave.jpg is quite the character. If Zorie is my Queen, then he's the Knave. He came into the emergency clinic as my first case of 2005, after being hit by a car the night before. He had disappeared, and his farmer owner couldn't find him until the next morning. The gentleman was very limited on funds, knew that Trinity (unnamed at the time, six months old) had bad injuries, and requested euthanasia. Now I'm usually pretty good about resisting the urge to adopt every single homeless animal that comes into the clinic, but one look at him and I knew I just couldn't do it. His left hind leg was pretty bad, and I ended up amputating it. My original intention was to place him in my church as a church kitty (hence the name Trinity). But he had other ideas and adopted me.

Posted by: Acadian May 18 2011, 10:05 PM

Rider, the kitties are beautiful! How appropriate for a three legged church-going cat to be named Trinity! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Olen May 18 2011, 11:01 PM

Those are nice cats... Zorie looks like she has quite a temper to her, I can imagine she was a queen in more ways than one. It's a very good picture, I can see how she could look like a black ball with eyes...

Trinity looks friendly. It's odd how cats adopt people as much as the other way.

Posted by: haute ecole rider May 18 2011, 11:54 PM

Actually, Olen, it's more the other way around! wink.gif

Zorie is the most civilized cat I've ever had. She shares beds and chairs and couches with regal politeness. She loves meeting people, especially children, and adores being petted by them. I've brought her to work with me a couple of times (when she needed a chiropractic adjustment and I would have a colleague perform one on her), and she would cruise laps in the employee lounge. She's used to strangers, since she was a show kitty when she was quite young.

Trinity on the other hand is sweet only to my mom and I. Everyone else gets a big spitty hiss from him. He likes to claim 'dibs' on my sisters' and friends' purses when they come to visit, then prevent them from reclaiming their property. "It's mine now!" He doesn't like it when people come to our house, and gets all upset when they have fun in his space. He is also impossible to handle when at the clinic. I usually take him out of the carrier and place him straight into the 'Wild Child.' It's a plexiglass box that can be sealed off, and we can pipe oxygen and anesthetic gas into it. I just gas him down before I let anyone else handle him. Yup, that's how bad he is. I'm very good at handling difficult cats, but with this one I just go the gas route. It's easier on everybody, and I don't have to worry about someone else getting bit.

Oh aye! She got Ex1 AND her first CAP! That is Certificat d'Apitude de Premiere, dvs certificate for being a Premiere, if she had not been castrated she would have been Champion! But they call it Premier instead. It's the same thing you know! 3 CAP from 3 different judges makes her a Premiere and then she will go for the title International Premiere! then she needs a lot of certificates (6)and in foreign countries as well. So then it will be travel time..Norway or Denmark!

And yes lady Syl, I'm so very proud of her! Not only is she a beauty, her temper is very good and the last judge admired it! yayy

Not only is she a beauty, her temper is very good and the last judge admired it! yayy

It is the same way in the dog shows regarding the spay/neutered animals. I guess because they want the champions to pass on their genes. Congrats on her great showing !!

Cat shows, dog shows, horse shows.

When you think about it, all they are are advertising for breeding stock. (Horse races, too). People only want to breed to champion stock, they only want offspring of champion stock, they only want to buy champion. That champion title implies that the bearer is the best of the best.

Well, it's all a bunch of kerpuffle. I've seen so many "champions" that wouldn't pass my standards. English Bulldogs, anyone? These dogs are huge income generators for veterinary clinics (my own veterinary mentor does a lot of Bulldog work, and even has clients coming from Iowa, and we're in EASTERN Illinois!). Champion German Shepherds can't walk normally, it's a miracle they can run without skinning their knees on the ground. Golden Retrievers are allergic to everything, including their owners. And you expect me to believe these are healthy genetic examples?

Thoroughbreds bred for the race track? Breakdowns before they're five years old. Unsoundness all their lives. Quarter Horses? Champions of the Impressive line have hyperperiodic hyperkalemia, where their muscles become weak. Additionally, many of these horses have navicular because they have Shetland pony-sized feet under Shire-sized bodies. Okay, I'm exaggerating, but that combination is not good, and many so-called champions were euthanized before their time because the pain in their feet was so bad. And I was starting to see a disturbing trend toward pop-eyes in Arabians and Morgans. Like their equivalents in Pekingneses, Boston Terriers, Chihuahuas, and other bug-eyed breeds, they are more prone to corneal damage and proptosis (eyeball leaving the socket usually due to trauma).

While I love Morgan horses, I will be the first to admit that there has been unsound breeding practices perpetuated thanks to horse shows that emphasize radical appearances as opposed to sound temperaments, sound conformation, and sound performance.

Cats haven't suffered as much at the hands of breeders, partially because selective breeding of cats have not been going on as long as for dogs and horses, yet the appearance of new "breeds" like the Munchkin have me cringing. The Manx cat, while overall a pretty solid breed, has a tendency for spinal defects thanks to the mutation that gives it the short/tailless appearance. Persians have a tendency for eye and nasal infections; they also have a genetic defect for polycystic kidney disease that is usually fatal by the time the cat is five. When I look at cats, I look for the ones closest to the 'natural' type - the American Shorthair (still has an open stud book last time I looked), which is practically identical to the 'barn cat' we see so many of in vet practice, and of the long-haired breeds, Maine Coons, Norwegians, and Siberians.

Depending on your religious orientation, God or Nature knows best when it comes to who are the real champions. Everything we humans touch in our puny attempts to improve have resulted in suffering, pain, illness, and genetic defects that by rights would have been eliminated out of the gene pool if left alone.

Sorry, it's one of my soapboxes. I'll get off now.

Congratulations, minque, on your princess's success at her show. She is gorgeous and her personality really shines. My own Zorie was a show cat in her younger months, and she did very well. The judges loved her temperament, and those got passed down to her babies. I adore her every day - she is the most civilized cat I've ever lived with. Yet she will drop the queen act and play with total abandon. You should see her at her favorite game - catch the kibble. I have her favorite treat, and I toss a little piece across the wood floor. She goes chasing after it, and sometimes she'll bat it around so she can chase it some more. She's so adorable when she does this!

Don't ask me why, but this sentence reminded me of that SouthPark episode when Kyle has the (huge) testacles of a black man implanted into his knees so he can play basketball. He made a jump shot and when he landed the testacles burst, and he had to walk (skinning his knees on the ground). ... Maybe I better drink more coffee, lol.

Wow, this I didn't know. But it does make sense that they want those Champion genes passed on. And I'm so glad she has a good temper, minque! That is a wonderful thing to find in a pet--my cat's temper is mostly good, but lately she's been angry with me (now I have a baby AND a three year old taking up more of my time, so she gets less of me than she did before the kids were born... My poor sweet little kitty has a right to be angry--I just wish she wouldn't take it out on the carpet!)

After the game Kyle's dad goes to sue the doctor for malpractice - and instead ends up accepting a free surgical procedure to turn himself into a dolphin (complete with the fin on his back and dolphin sounds, ROFL !!!)

It's one (of many) of my fave episodes. (You'll be coming across another of my fave episodes soon in an early chapter of my story - "Who Dukey'd in the Unrinal" - when the Gray Prince goes for an interview with the Black Horse Courier, lol).

Oh hautie! I KNOW! I've had dogs as well and I did not go to dog shows more than once, then I decided it was not for me OR my dog, a German shepherd. I did NOT go to shows with my two previous house cats either...BUT Indra is different! I castrated her, yeah took the whole gear out so there's no breeding going on!

Why do I take her to cat shows? Well first it's FUN! You meet all kind of ppl who share your interest in cats, Second Indra is very beautiful and an extremely cool cat so she does not mind sitting in that cage all day, because there are so many things to distact her, me, ppl saying hallo to her, ppl grooming her, (Me and her breeder) which she actually LOVES, She can come out of the cage, sitting on my lap, in my arms while I walk around and so on....She sits in her cage patiently, goes to sleep, eat a bite, sleeps again.

Third, i like to have professional experts judging her, how her fur is, her body her gorgeous tail, and above all her temper! AND i get very proud and happy when other ppl tell me my cat is beautiful and cool.

I will take her to another show in Kalmar the 10th of july, then we take a break from shows until late fall or even winter. My first goal is to get her the title Premier, national Premier.

The day Indra feels bad about cat shows i will stop going! Of course i will....it's not just for me i will consider Indra's feelings first!

You are doing this for all the right reasons, and absolutely take Indra's feelings into consideration. Zorie loved the attention, but hated the car rides, so her breeder stopped after she got her first championship. That's what I love about her breeder - her cats' health and sanity are the most important things, and she breeds for wonderful, playful, gentle temperaments.

Everyone who comes to the house loves Zorie - not only for her soft flooffy coat but also for her wonderful 'luvmeluvme' attitude. And she is soooo good with children!

YAY! Indra did it again! She took her second CAP at the Cat show on sunday, and got a marvellous judgment, i.e wonderful temper, which made me very happy.

I will post some pics tomorrow!

Minque your kitty is beautiful!!!!!!! And I'm not really a cat person, though when I did more rescue work I nursed a few back to health before they were adopted.

I agree with Hautie to a degree, I have had 4 Boxers in the past and I do love them but....the first I lost to cancer, the second was agressive (do have to say I adopted him at 6 or 7 months, what happened to him prior to that I have no idea) the third was blind-runnin nuts!!!!! and the 4th had a brain aneurism when he was 6.

I now have two rescues, a Pomeranian that I got when she was 6 months old named Zoe and a Shih-Poo that has at some point been mistreated by a man, she hates them all (smart dog) but loves children and women. I also have a Grand Puppy, hehe. Her name is Amber and actually she started out as a rescue that I took in when she was hours old, found on the side of the road in a box with the rest of the litter. I raised 3 of them and a friend of mine raised two. I lost the runt at 9 weeks to parvo, even though they had had their shots they didn't have the immunity their mother would have given them through her milk. Anyway, now my eldest daughter has her and she is much like a fuzzy human, even sits on the corner of the couch on her butt with her front paw on the arm of the couch and watches TV.

congratulations, minque!! I'm waitin' on those pics now! I"m not surprised she got high points for her 'tude - it shows in the pics you posted earlier. biggrin.gif

Thynae, that dog thinks she's a human, not a dog! Common among those who are raised among humans rather than with other dogs. It's also seen in horses, cats, birds, wild animals, etc. It's also noticeable in humans (wolf-boy anyone?). It's called imprinting. Unavoidable in your case, really, but could be worse! Could be a 3,000 pound beefalo bull!

Posted by: Grits Jul 26 2011, 02:46 PM

He’s a Chinese dwarf hamster, so he’s much smaller than his name. He was awarded his rank by an eleven year old. I suspect cuteness was a factor. Hey, I wonder if he likes sweetrolls! Probably not good for his tiny figure, though. smile.gif

All he needs are a couple of epaulets with captains insignia and he'd be all set. Size has nothing to do with ability. There's an old saying my Dad quoted often for my benefit

"If size had anything to do with it a cow could out run a rabbit."

He's adorable!!!

ROFL !!!! I see some of us have our minds in the same place as Gils's and Andronicus's !!! ROFL !!!! At least you DID recognize that it was her tail, both Gils and Andronicus thought it was her hand, lol.

Maxical bet Owyn she could make Gils draw her a picture to take to Andronicus in jail. She did it by drawing the (above) and asking him to sign it for Andronicus, lol.

Pretty early on in the story, way too far back for memories of the event, lol. I found out over at the BGSF when I wrote Maxical's first adventures that - in five chapters someone can forget a glass jar filled with yellow liquid is "Nord Whiskey" and assume it is Maxical's pee that Manheim somehow extracted from her greaves and put in a jar - which he then gave to Owyn ... as a gift ... to drink, .... ... ... SPEW !!!!! I still roll every time I remember that !!!!!

PS: By the way, the above is the full extent of my drawing capabilities, lol.

Indra did well, she got her second certificate, one more and she will be National Premier! My little princess is kinda lazy, she just loves her new cage dressing, especially the padded one in the bottom, it's made by a friend of mine and Indra loved it from the moment I got it and laid it on the floor for her to examine it. She immediately curled up on it!

Then it is also a bit fuzzy and noisy at a cat show, lots of ppl looking at the cats, grooming and preparing for the judging and so on. Now Indra is very calm and tolerant, she likes the cage, she feels safe in it.

The last pic is from the actual judging, the lady-judge is holding her under her arms, very thoroughly describing her for the audience, her tail, the quality of her fur, her body, face eyes ears...everything is ranked by points. Maximum is 100 and if you get over 95 you get a certificate!.

Indra got very high ranked for her good temper, you know you can actually do whatever you want with that kitty, if she feels safe with you! Besides she is particularly fond of men! My son (Bolzmania on Chorrol) is her big love, the breeders husband is another one...

Next show will be in october, then we pause until spring!

She's cute but she's a huge baby. She's really protective but to my family she's extremely sweet and gentle. All she wants to do is play fetch and lay next to people.

She's deathly afraid of thunder and she lives in the house so when it storms she bangs against the bedroom door and whines until I let her in to sleep at the bottom of the bed.

Bless your heart, and Molle's too. I went through this twice with dogs, one was 19 years old and one 15 - they are family when they've been with you that long, it isn't easy to know they are aging and your time with them is shortening. <3

They are creatures of habit, will go in the same spot all the time (pigs are the same way, I litterbox trained my baby razorback hog that way, exept the litterbox was much bigger and lined with newspaper instead of litter, lol).

He was very cute, but had an ungodly temper and could take down a good sized dog even when he was very small. Pigs are extremely smart, I didn't know that till after having Sylvester.

I'm so glad to hear Molle is doing better! The slow down on eating - sometimes they do that if they have a hairball, and a change of seasons can cause them to lick off the shedding hairs when they groom themselves.

That is a probability. He hasnīt done it before from what I can recall though. But then again I donīt do stuff exactly how I always did it either. The good thing is he doesnīt squeek in pain when I grab him, no matter how rough I am. Our last cat did that, she had cancer in her womb and it gave her serious pain and in the end we couldnīt touch her at all except on her head.

Her name was Missan btw smile.gif

Animals will act how they're raised. Pitbulls are no more prone to violence than any other breed.

The problem is that lots of gangs and underground dog fighting clubs train pitbulls for the purpose of violence and then the dogs get the rap for it. Same goes with German Shephards and Rottweilers, I've had both and they were wimps.

Hello, good friends. Unfortunately I have some very sad news to share with you today.

Our beloved cat Molle quietly and peacefully went to sleep this morning at the vetīs. He had tumours in his spleen and possibly kidneys and he was in a very bad shape. The vet told us after the injection it could take up to ten minutes before it was over. It only took three. He died while I was holding him and I couldnīt really tell exactly when it happened. I donīt know why, but somehow that feels a bit better. It was like he was alive for a moment longer than he really was.

We had him for fourteen years and he was the most perfect cat we could have had. He was goofy and curious and loved rolling around in the sun on the paved walkway up to my momīs and dadīs house. At least he got to live through one more spring to able to do that a few more times.
He also loved crawling in under the sofa to get away from me when I visited. Apparently he thought I cuddled with him too much.

In honor of him Iīll post some pictures. Youīve seen some of them before and this is how I will remember him.

Rest in peace, Molle. Your pain is over.

http://i.imgur.com/dtgYypZ.jpg is Spots. He is a feral cat whom I have been trying to adopt. About a month ago I was able to get him to come into the house. Usually he has only stayed for a half hour to an hour at most. Then he is at the door crying to go out again. Typically he comes to visit as soon as it gets dark. Sometimes he comes by in the morning as well (my guess is right before he goes to sleep).

Today he came by at 3pm, and he has not shown one sign of wanting to leave yet. He's sleeping under my bed right now.

Nope. Just toss it the occasional gut-fed cricket, and mist once a day and they are quite happy. Do see that they have plenty of clean water however. And don't let anyone tell you that they do well in 'desert' set-ups. I had a 'zen garden' theme prior with white sand and black river rocks.

Pictured here.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-OdAoydBcRCA/UfRzb8BHG1I/AAAAAAAAB6k/akoOTrJqtdI/s640/20121118_165938.jpg

Changed it to a humid rain-forest set-up and her behavior perked right up.

They also digest very slowly, so it's very easy to overfeed them. One or two crickets per week is plenty. Obese scorpions live shorter lifespans, and they can go for up to a year without food.

EDITED TO ADD:

You cannot 'de-venomize' a scorpion. Remove the stinger and it will die. That being said, Emps don't really sting. They're far more likely to pinch you. If they do sting, it's about as bad as a bee sting. Unless you're allergic than...yeah.

A good set-up is a ten-gallon tank that *locks* They are active mostly at night, and will get into places in the cage that will leave you wondering how they did it for years to come.

Warm, humid environments is how they best dwell. I'd recommend a pad that sticks on the side over a heat lamp, and put it on the side, never the bottom, because Emps burrow for temperature regulation. Also be sure to give it plenty of hiding spots, as they are ambush predators.

They're also relatively inexpensive. An emperor themselves are about twenty bucks a pop. I got my set-up for a hundred bucks out the door.

Lol. That kind of hits home for me.

Not the one I was talking about in the luv thread, but the past that came out from the shadows was also freaked out by the thought.

She didn't want to come over at first, which I cited was just irrational fear on her part. She was adamant, and I just shrugged. She than asked if you could pet it, or if there was a purpose to having it. I explained you could hold it if you really wanted too, but petting it would probably just irk it. The purpose was the same as any other pet, or a fish tank. Aesthetics.

Finally she developed the courage and saw it, getting freaked out by the sight. I kind of laughed. She said how it was soooo creepy.

I pointed out that it bathed itself, really did nothing other than sit there, and then told her how she (siddhartha) could be a mother too, and that the primal instincts she felt to protect her kid, was the exact same in this humble creature.

She got all "Awwwww!" until I took it out and showed her how tame the thing really is.

Fastest I'd ever seen a human cross a room.

Edited to add: Oh yeah that reminds me, if anyone is thinking about getting one: It's not actually recommended that you handle an Emp, as the fall could kill them, and they do tend to get awfully curious as to what this warm, squishy surface they're on is. Also, while they really are lazy gluttons, they are lightning fast. I've seen this thing cross it's cage in a fraction of a second while hunting a cricket, and when I take it out with a tupperware case and lid, my brain can barely perceive how quickly it turns around to attack the lid.

In Shamanistic terms, a Scorpion is also a powerful guardian spirit. Particularly against malevolent entities.

No malevolent entities here so far, other than myself so I accept that as proof!

@Blackie: Not my kind of pet, but Siddhartha looks rather cool nonetheless. A vet colleague of mine had Madagascar pill bugs which we would occasionally see photos of. Fascinating creatures. It's amazing how much we learn about them when we live with them and get to observe them being - well - themselves!

@SubRosa: Adorable Spots! Sounds like he's figured out which side of the door he belongs. He'll be a happy cat come winter! My Trinity, having been born on a dairy farm and hit by a car on New Year's Eve, will not go outside and actually gets upset if someone holds the door open too long (as in letting company in or out).

So, some of you may know that I've been working part time at the Apple Store not far from home for a little over a year and a half. It's a great job, not typical retail, and I love being there. Great group of people, which IMHO makes all the difference in the world. Amazing diversity not only in the customers, but also in my fellow employees. And I get paid for talking about one of my passions!

In any case, we had our quarterly store meeting today. And we always end these meetings with announcing Best of Brand. In the week leading up to the meeting, all the employees have an opportunity to nominate someone who best represents Apple, not only to our customers, but also to each other. Some pretty amazing people have been voted Best of Brand in the past. This quarter the managers saw the highest participation for the store - 88% of the employees nominated someone. Of the people nominated, guess who won. Me.

What did I do???

I am shocked, honored, humbled and excited all at once. It's the first time I've been recognized publicly for what I am. And I'm amazed that my own fellow employees feel that way about me.

So that's my news for the day.

DMSO is a driving agent, will drive anything it is painted over into the bloodstream instantly. The person tastes oysters immediately, that is the only clue DMSO was used (while the venom rushes to his heart and brain).

Posted by: haute ecole rider Jul 28 2013, 09:54 PM

Actually, DMSO does not taste like oysters, but rather like garlic.

I've used DMSO multiple times in vet school. It also comes out in your breath, your sweat, urine, pores, etc. You get the picture.

My first year of vet school was marked by barn fires at two large horse farms within a week. The large animal clinic downstairs was full of horses being treated for smoke inhalation and other related injuries. DMSO was given IV to reduce the inflammation (it is a very potent anti-inflammatory), and the entire place reeked of garlic. The smell even seeped through two sets of pressurized fire doors to the small animal clinic upstairs. We certainly had no issues with vampires for the two weeks these horses were there!

ROFL !!! That should be classified as "never try this at home," lol.

I've actually only heard of a few DMSO related deaths, usually from miss-handling it because it bonds with almost any chemical you may touch and drives it instantly into the bloodstream. One died in the clinical testing of it where it was painted topically on their chests.

The only murder I've ever heard of using it was done by painting the venom of a poisonous snake on the steering wheel of someone's car and painting DMSO over the venom. (of course then everyone that touches that surface dies too, meaning eventually it will be discovered and they will look for people that wanted that person dead who might have access to DMSO + venom).

The well known oystery taste is a dead givaway DMSO was used, but figuring out what the poison was that it drove into the person's bloodstream and what surface it was painted on that they touched is the hard part for anyone investigating the crime, lol.

Posted by: haute ecole rider Jul 29 2013, 12:12 AM

Again I'd like to point out that DMSO provides a garlicky taste, not oysterlike.

Here is more information about DMSO at http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-874-DMSO%20(DIMETHYLSULFOXIDE).aspx?activeIngredientId=874&activeIngredientName=DMSO%20(DIMETHYLSULFOXIDE)

The deaths mALX referred to likely are due to the use of industrial grade DMSO, which likely contains toxic impurities. DMSO itself is not toxic, unless there is pre-existing kidney or liver disease (in which case just about anything is toxic). DMSO made for medicinal use is pure, and quite safe.

As mALX points out, DMSO can be used as a transport for drugs. In equine medicine, we often mixed it with nitrofurazone ointment to sweat out lower limb swelling due to injuries - DMSO for its antiinflammatory effect and nitrofurazone for its antibiotic effect. The mixture would be wrapped with Saran wrap and covered with Vetrap (a type of elastic bandage - it is commonly used over fiberglass casts in human medicine).

It might be a perfect murder, except for the smell. Even dead bodies will reek of garlic. I speak from personal experience!

I doubt very much a clinical trial on humans would use industrial grade DMSO, lol. If it was at all important to this discussion or this thread, I just pulled out the pharmaceutical printout for a bottle of 99% pure liquid DMSO and it describes it as an oyster taste.

It is probably a matter of what whoever is tasting it thinks it tastes like, and the manufacturer went with oyster. I personally have used it topically on horses for decades and tasted oyster; you obviously correlate it with garlic. It doesn't matter how you want to describe it as, neither description would be considered wrong, but personal impression.

Regardless, let's not pull this thread off topic; did you have a pic of a pet to post?

Congrats on the new kitten!

Where did you get the cat house? I could use something like that to put on my porch for Spots, so he has somewhere to go when he comes by while I am at work.

Won't it get yanked up into the blades (AKA Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory "We're getting too close to the fan Charlie! We've got to go back!" "I can't!" "You have to fart, Charlie! Do it now!" "I can't!")

I'm sorry. I didn't have my glasses on, and thought it said "Ceiling Fan." So I answered, posted, put my glasses on, read your post - low and behold, it only said "Ceiling," not "Ceiling Fan." How embarrassing!

(But after a little adjustment to your post, my embarrassment was ended ... .... .... er .... )

I set up a little http://i.imgur.com/dZksQJ1.jpg on the porch for Spots to sleep inside of when I am not around. Or when I am sleeping and don't know he's outside (he came to visit at 5am this morning and it is only luck that I happened to have gotten up to go to the bathroom then and saw him to let him in).

He came over about a half hour ago, and it started to rain about five minutes later. The sound of the rain scared him, and I had to let him back out. He always wants out when he gets scared. Half the time he just sits on the porch and does not go anywhere. I think it is the open spaces that comfort him. He knows he can run somewhere. Where inside there are all the walls making him feel trapped.

I love how Spots and Freya's markings almost perfectly complement each other. I hope Spots gets more comfortable inside.

Posted by: SubRosa Aug 7 2013, 12:47 AM

The rain eased up to a little drizzle, and Spots came back in. Now Freya is sleeping in her usual spot next to my monitor, and Spots is http://i.imgur.com/TTQEdsI.jpg Thank goodness for the peace. They kept me up all last night thanks to Freya harassing Spots.

I met the girlfriend of one of my neighbors, and she said she knew him from when her gf lived in one of the nearby buildings, and they were hoping to adopt him too. It sounds like money is an issue right now though, so they won't be able to do it for a while. I told them I thought that would be great, and asked her to keep in touch. As much as I adore Spots, I would love to see him have a happy home - without an old set in her ways cat like Freya always on his case, not to mention adding to my stress.

Posted by: mirocu Aug 7 2013, 09:36 AM

Nice little place for the kitties there. More size-appropriate unlike what I made. In there a full-grown cat have enough room to do gymnastics! tongue.gif

Posted by: Grits Aug 8 2013, 11:21 AM

Aww, Spots looks so sweet in his sleeping perch! Like Acadian said, Spots' and Freya's looks complement each other so well. Even if Freya doesn't change her mind about him, maybe his time indoors will help him make a good transition to a permanent home. A hopeful thought for the long nights when you're grinding your teeth over the cat spats. wacko.gif

Posted by: SubRosa Aug 8 2013, 04:24 PM

Freya and Spots seem to be getting along better than I thought. I think they are actually playing, not fighting. They paw at one another, but don't use their claws. Plus there is none of the usual hissing, hair standing on end, ears pinned back, etc... behaviour you usually see from angry cats.

Yesterday I sneaked in on them to watch, and saw Freya run around Spots in a circle, jump up on the small cat climby thing I have in the bedroom, fall halfway off, catch herself, then jump away. All the while Spots just sat there looking clueless. I could not stop laughing.

In the meanwhile Spots likes http://i.imgur.com/XH9p4Uk.jpg, and http://i.imgur.com/UfSlYWk.jpg. Now when he goes outside, he often just sits on the cathouse for hours.

@ SubRosa -

What a nice little housing on the porch, and curious (or jealous) Freya watching, lol. Spots has found a nice roosting place behind your chair, lol. Loved this pic! Your home looks like a cat heaven, lol.

My two favorites are Spots on top of and in his house - now that is a cat, lol. We bought some of those rug covered boxes for our feral colony of cats, and the only time they got inside them was to reach their paws out and play with whichever cat was on top of the box.

Loved all these shots, these are great!

Although I suppose that'd defeat the purpose of the thread.

You are right, that would defeat the purpose of this thread. Nothing random here, but you can post cute pics on the "Everything" thread.

@Rosie! Spots is very handsome, his patches and spots are soooo cute, her coloring is rather like my Bastian's

@mirocu YES all kittens are adorable but YOUR little Crumble (=Smulan) is just too cute to be true! I love torties and she will grow up into a very beautiful cat

@Blackie I think you are brave to keep a Scorpion as a pet! I mean I'm just terrified of those animals even thouh they are beautiful, but still *shrugs*
