QUOTE(Decrepit @ Oct 28 2020, 04:04 PM) With almost all mods I run updated to DFU 0.10.26+ compatibility I took the plunge and updated to 0.10.27. It hasn't gone as well as hoped. The nifty pre loading-screen animation sequence is now a blank black screen. Exiting the game results in a frozen screen that must be manually shot down. Reloading a save is iffy. However, once in the game its smooth sailing. As rock-solid as my previous install. A few in-game objects remain low-res 2D sprites that I swear were hi-res 3D with the old install, but I might be misremembering.
As for what my DFU avatar is doing at the moment, he on quest for Daggerfall City's Mages Guild, assigned to bring down a rogue mage. He's been at it a long time, considering it's not one of the game's bigger dungeons. We're not sure there's any unexplored areas left, except whatever is beneath a trapdoor we can't find an opening level for. Be that as it may, he's not giving up. Not any time soon.
Is 0.10.27 still in Beta? My latest update was .23. Being that I usually install every other update, I'm a little behind. That could be because I'm well pleased with the effort so far and didn't seek out new updates. Hope your avatar finds a way to open the trapdoor.

That could be because I'm well pleased with the effort so far and didn't seek out new updates. Hope your avatar finds a way to open the trapdoor. I believe DFU is still considered alpha, beta at most. There's a BIG break in mod compatibility at either 0.10.25 or 0.10.26. As I recall it has to do with DFU builds now being written for an update to the Unity Engine. Some mods require updates to work with the updated DFU / Unity builds. Those updated mods don't work with older DFU / Unity builds. Some mods are compatible with both. I'm with you on being content with an 'older' build / mods. While certain aspects of my new build are visually improved (mostly concerning reflections, which I never got right until now) others aren't yet quite up to snuff. Hopefully that'll work itself out. Yes, my avatar finished his hellish Mages Guild assignment. As suspected, that trapdoor was the key. What finally saved him was recalling an object that 'might' serve as a triggering device. He had no idea where within the dungeon he'd seen it, other than that it was at or near a pit. That narrowed our search, but not by a lot, as this dungeon contained pits galore. Be that as it may, he eventually found and manipulated it, returned to the now open trapdoor, descended, and soon despatched the rogue mage. We were both so burned out by then that he broke tradition and teleported to the exit rather than walk there.

I'm getting tempted to give DFU a try, but I can't find any place where they tell you what tools you need to build mods. I couldn't possibly play without the Orc race, so i'd have to covert my original DF mod to Unity. I probably have TEMPLATE source for the quest mods I was trying to make, too. and that appears to be usable. Maybe I'll just have to sign up with them and ask.

QUOTE(Renee @ Nov 5 2020, 03:49 PM) That's great. You must be a real master at those dungeons by now... I can remember the dungeons in Arena were also very large and confusing, even some of the random dungeons. But I've heard Daggerfall goes even further. There are some broad similarities between dungeon in the two titles, but they do have a quite different feel, with Daggerfall's being more sophisticated/complex. Aye, my DFU avatar and myself consider ourselves proficient dungeon delvers. Still, we can be as hopelessly befuddled in certain dungeons as anyone else. There's a Unity mod that reduces dungeon size. To each his or her own, but I as I consider Daggerfall's large complex dungeon one of the game's main draw you can bet I'll never use it. I suspect it's possible, but might (or might not) take a heck of a lot of work to implement. I found a thread at DFWorkshop Forum where someone asks about the feasibility of such a mod. None of the few responders knew, but mentioned your DOS Daggerfall mod as proof that it's at least theoretically possible. You being that mod's creator, I agree about signing up there and asking the powers that be how to go about updating it for Unity.

I've registered on their forums, found that thread, and replied. We'll see what happens.

I started Igodah Go^Pe's game in Arena today. Igodah is a high elf I originally rolled in TES: IV Oblivion. She died during that game's Main Quest, but I made a younger version of her for Morrowind, and now, the youngest version of all, shows in TES 1: Arena. Paper Doll PIcHer hair should be blonde, but there was no option for this. And she will mostly be my character to do random exploring with.

One of the things about you that amuses me, Renee, is how hardcore of a roleplayer you are--EXCEPT for the names of your characters. They are never lore-friendly and are always puns or plays-on-words, but every other aspect of role-playing you dig deep into. Just a curious juxtaposition.

This works really well for an elf or Mer character. The fun part is how you develop the transition story from game to game. I've been playing a single character through Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, and now in Oblivion. Hope is that he makes it to Skyrim before TES6 arrives.

mirocu: That is true. Of all the Elder Scrolls games, Arena is the one in which my character gained immense wealth and then had the most trouble figuring how to spend it. Can't buy houses or horses or even enchanted armor pieces in this game. Enchanted gears shows up so often in loot, there's no point in buying them. But most of the game's quests are so basic after awhile. I mostly continued Renee Gade I's game solely because the Main Quest requires all those riddles and challenges, and I really wanted to BEAT Jagar Tharn. Rader: Funny you should say that. I recently found a post I made in the archived Beth forums in which I myself said my names are not lore friendly. Without a good name (good for me, that is) nothing else follows. For character names, I usually open my mind to the universe. I'll think of names that occur to me in everyday life. Some may think it's sacrilegious to use non-authentic names, but I don't even know how to pronounce "Hfarfringar". I'd rather have Claire or Luci or Dyan for a first name. The last name then eventually "clicks". I'll have an "aha" moment. That's it!!! That's his or her name! It'll just occur to my right brain at some point, in other words.macole: I remember you made a teenaged version of Jandaga, if i recall. Topic: last I saw Igodah she was waltzing around Wasten Coridale, the town which Arena plops us in if we start as a High Elf. This town is on a small island to the west of the main isle. She is a Mage Scholar in this game, honing her skills. I'm not sure what her full backstory is yet, why she started in jail, and so on. Igodah will spend X amount of time doing random tasks and earning gold, while she builds her magical book. She will eventually begin random exploring outside of town. Literally just walking into the procedurally-generated landscape, looking for random dungeons to plunder. This post has been edited by Renee: Dec 3 2020, 03:41 PM

I'll also just mention that some of my longer-term characters do have lore-friendlier names. Lady Saga's real name is Aerin, Renee Gade III's real name is Lucitia, Sir Vyvoor's real name is Davor, and so on. I only learn these real names over time. Hmm, actually Renee's name is lore-friendly as it is, since there is a Renee Geonette in TES: IV. Her real name is Lucitia, though.

In Arenal he went by a name given to him by the Emperor (not his true name). The title Jandaga (Life’s Dagger or Band Guardian) wasn’t earned until Morrowind when he proved his devotion to his companions. Kaleah is the only companion that calls him Feache; first in Daggerfall as an insult later on in Morrowind as a cutesy pet name (it’s complicated). Oh my, look at the names on that old thread! I nearly fell out of my chair reading Arcadian’s description on how Buffy got her name. You can buy very expensive pieces of enchanted armor. I have a list of the best if you would want it. Shop wisely and you can get a very colorful character. This post has been edited by macole: Dec 3 2020, 11:21 PM

Yes, those threads are really fun to read, I often fall out of my chair at some of our old posts. Yes, I was wondering why she calls him Faeche. Now we know part of the story. I can remember being with my Battlemage and the best she could ever find was Leather Armor. Never could find any enchanted armor (at least Cuirass and Greaves) she could wear. But it didn't matter because there was so many other enchanted items in random loot. This post has been edited by Renee: Dec 4 2020, 02:16 PM

This image reminds me that Arena uses the old-school armor/protection rating system, where a lower number designates better protection. I never liked it and was pleased as punch when the modern common practice of higher equals better won out. It makes no difference game-play wise, of course. But I find it hard to wrap my head around the old system.

Yeah, because when you see a large number with a negative symbol it looks like it's terrible. But for some reason it the old-school D&D days they thought it made sense to have it work that way (I get that the idea was that it correlated to how much damage it mitigated, but come on). I, too, was glad they opted for a "plus (+) = better" system in Daggerfall.

I know what you mean. It took me a long, long time to fully understand what D&D's THAC0 was trying to tell me. I don't find it much trouble adapting to either way now a days.
