On the Road

With a hail of hot screaming lead, the Raiders sprung their ambush on the unsuspecting Scavengers. The small group of scavers were heading to an old neighborhood between Diamond City and Vault 81 to see if there was anything worth scavenging. Upon arriving, the Raiders who had set up camp there opened fire on them and the chaos of battle descended. Before the battle, one of the Scavengers decided to check the area around the Vault 81 entrance for any loot, and upon hearing the gun shots hurried cautiously back to the road to find her group. By the time she got to the small neighborhood, her group was slowly beating back the Raiders. Victory, it seemed, was assured, but things were about to go horribly wrong.

The Raiders were indeed wiped out, but the fighting drew the attention of a nearby patrol of Super Mutants. The late comer, decided to crouch behind a tree across the road as one of the Mutants erupted from the side of a house wielding a large board as a melee weapon. She watched as the board wielding Mutant killed one of her fellows with a skull crushing swing, and it was in turn killed by two of her remaining associates. Using the houses for cover, two other Mutants attacked the remaining Scavengers. Having not been detected, the late comer decided to flank behind the mutant closest to her and managed to take it out with her assault carbine. Meanwhile the other mutant managed to blow off one of the other scavers’ head, which upon witnessing, the other scaver became completely demoralized. He fled and the last Mutant gave chase, and neither were ever seen again. Not for the first time, the late comer found herself all alone.

Now that the battle was over and the little neighborhood was at peace again, the remaining scaver on the scene went about looting the bodies and checking the buildings for anything worth something. “At least I won’t have to share any of the caps I make off selling this [censored] with anyone.”, she thought as she stuffed her bag full. After gathering up anything of value, the Lone Scaver started the long walk towards Diamond City. She had never been to Diamond City but the Abernathys, who were some farmers she stayed with a few months ago, frequently traveled there to trade their tatos and melons. Those farmers were killed by a wandering band of Raiders just when she started thinking she could settle down on their farm and make a new life for herself. The only survivors of that fight were the Lone Scaver (who was wounded during the fighting and was forced to retreat) and the Abernathys’ cat, Maisie, who was smart enough to get lost when the bullets started flying. Life in the Commonwealth can be brutal, cruel, and all too often, short.

The Lone Scaver thought about that day as she made her way to the main road that led to Diamond City. “Best let it go.”, she thought and paused by an old mail dropbox near an alley way, to stash some of her loot in order to lighten her load a bit. She thought she smelled the aroma of something cooking wafting down the alley to her right, but the sudden eruption of gunfire down the road towards Diamond City drew her attention, and into another fight for survival. In the Commonwealth, such is life.
