The Dragon Lands

Chapter 1: The Awakening

(Unknown)

It was dark when I woke up. I had no idea who I was or where I came from. I was lying on my back, staring at the ceiling. It was very dark. It smelled like spoiled bread. I turned to my side and skimmed the room. I was in a cave from the looks of it. The only light was candle light coming from the hall outside a barred door. I sat up realizing that I was in a cave with the exit barred off. A voice came from the dark corner to the left of the door, where the least amount of light shined.

“It has finally awaken. It was asleep for three days”
“Who are you?” I asked, standing up.

Out of the darkness came an Argonian in dirty cloths He walked over to another body lying on the floor and shook it gently.

“Huh?” a young female voice said
“It has finally awaken” the Argonian said softly.

The girl seemed to tired to respond. She mumbled a little and went back to sleep. The Argonian picked up an insect crawling on the floor and held it by its leg. He dropped it on her neck. Almost immediately, she was up shrieking. I got to look at her pretty well, since she was standing in the light. She was a young Breton girl, She was wearing a green robe with short sleeves and had short brown hair down to her neck.

“Please don’t ever do that again, Kane!”

The name Kane didn’t sound like an Argonian so I had to ask.

“Is that his real name?”

The Breton girl immediately looked over in surprise and smiled.

“Oh, hi! Your awake.”
“This one’s real name is “Waits for the Red Moon” the Argonian said.
“Yeah, but I just call him Kane because its much easier to say. So, what is your name?”

I tried to remember my name, but I couldn’t. I couldn’t remember anything about me.

“I don’t know. I’m not sure if I have a name.” I said.
“Oh… I’ll just give you a name for until you remember. Oh! Where are my manners, my name is Isabel”
“Where are we?”
“We are in a cave somewhere in the Dragon Tail mountains. I’m sorry to say, but we are all prisoners of a necromancer named Darroll. We owns a small army composed of undead and goblins that he hired. Kane was captured nine days ago when he was hunting. I think Darroll thought he was a spy. Necromancers have lots of enemies in the Mage’s guild you know.” Isabel explained.
“What about you?”
“I was brought here I think five days ago. I’m not sure. I was captured because he thought I resembled his dead wife. I know that’s just creepy, but worshipers of Sheogorath tend to show signs of insanity like that. As for you, you came three days ago. But you were asleep all that time.”

Kane returned to his dark corner and sat there. Then I noticed, Isabel was smiling. She was a bit to optimistic for some one who was locked in a cell. I sat down and tried to think of my past. For some reason all I could get were some very vivid images of what appeared to be a dragon.

“Oh, I almost forgot! I’ll call you Kai.” she said enthusiastically.
“It was my brother’s name.” her face remained smiling, but I could tell by her voice that she was sad. I thought to myself “Great. I’m stuck with a bipolar Breton and an Argonian that drops bugs on people while they’re asleep.” It occurred to me that Kane was doing something in his dark corner. It sounded like he was eating something. That’s when I found out how hungry I was. I was starving!

“What do you guys eat in here?” I said.
“Oh, it figures you would be hungry after you were asleep for 3 days. Don’t worry, we were saving your food just incase you woke up early.”

That’s when I remembered the spoiled smell.

“You cant be serious… Its spoiled.”
“Dark dampness spoils food quickly. Kai can wait. Food coming soon.”

Kane was right. I heard foot steps in the hallway along with the smell of fresh bread. The people carrying it were most likely goblins, as they were small and speaking a language that I didn’t understand. They came to the barred door.

“The Imperial is awake!” one of them shouted as he ran down the hallway. The other one slid the bread under the door and ran after the first goblin.

“I’m not hungry. I’ll let you guys have my share.” Isabel said.
“Kai can eat it. Kai hasn’t eaten in days.” Kane said.
“Thank you.”
I finished my share before Kane finished his. I heard the guards coming back. There was one that obviously was to heavy to be a goblin. He sounded like he was wearing heavy armor. When he came around the corner, I could see him. He was an Orc. And I was right, he was wearing armor. He had an axe on his back and a long sword on his side. He raised his hand and pointed at me.

“You!”
“Me?”
“Don’t be stupid! Gorrack is not fooled by you.”
“I don’t know what you mean, sir.”

He sneered. I don’t know what I said, and I could tell he obviously was not smart.

“Come…” he said as he unlocked the door. As I walked by Isabel, I glanced at her.
“Be careful.” she said as I passed her.

We walked down the tunnels, we came into a room with a shrine to Sheogorath. On the opposite side of the room, was a fancy wooden door. The Orc opened the door. Light shined in my eyes, blinding me for about a second. I walked into the room.

Hello there, Imperial.” a voice said. Over in the corner was a tall man sitting at a desk. He was reading something. On the desk were thousands of sketches of creatures and there skeletons. I walked toward the high elf. He put his book down and looked up at me.

“So who are you?”
“Kai”
“And why are you in a mortal’s body?”

I had no idea what he was talking about. Then I remembered what Isabel said about Sheogorath worshippers being insane. He stood up and examined me with his eyes.

“What do you mean?” I asked.
“Your aura is similar to a daedra. It’s not quite as fowl, but its still that of a daedra”
“I have no idea what your talking about.” Really. I didn’t…
“So why did you bring me here?”
“One of my goblins found you outside. We took you in the cell. My master told me to question you after you’ve awakened. However, since you wont cooperate with me, I have no choice but to try the direct approach.”

He raised his hand above his head. His hand started to glow a greenish color.

“Reveal yourself!” he shouted.
Before I knew it, I was surrounded by a pillar of green mist. It encircled me for several minutes, and went away.
“What was that about?” I asked.
“Impossible! Your still a human?”
“And your still an elf. Can I go now?”

Obviously, this made him angry…

“Gorrack! Take him back to the cell!”

Before I could defend myself, Gorrack grabbed me and put me on his shoulder. He was way more powerful than me, so struggle was useless. The two goblins followed.

The cell door opened, and I was thrown in. Gorrack shut the door and locked it.

“Gorrack can do much worse than that!” He said.
“It can beat its chest and boast, but it is harmless” Kane said.
“You want to back that up lizard!?”

Kane just remained quiet. The candle light from the hall reflected off his glaring eyes.

“Gorrack thought so.” Gorrack said as he left the hall. The two goblins stood guard. “Are you okay?” Isabel asked.
“No. Since I woke up with out any memories, and extreme hunger, and getting thrown on the ground by a BIG FAT SMELLY ORC!” I shouted in Gorrack’s direction, intentionally just to further provoke him.
He stopped and said “Gorrack will pretend he did not here that…” He walked away.

“Your lucky he didn’t try to attack you for that.” Isabel said.
“So where are you from. Not that it would matter to me.”
“I’m from Daggerfall. Its in High Rock, along the coast of the Liac Bay. I am a member of the Temple of Akatosh.”

Before she had finished her second line, I thought I saw something out of the corner of my eye. I turned my head and saw nothing. So I looked back. Then I heard the short sword on one of the Goblins, hit the ground. The other one looked over. A shadowy body charged toward him. The second goblin fell to the ground and twitched. He was probably cut across the throat, as he was unable to speak. The figure lifted the hood of his cloak. He was a Redguard in his thirties. He walked over to the door and busted the lock with the hilt of his sword.

“Who are you?” Isabel asked.
“I have been sent here to rescue a priestess.” he said.
“That’s me.”
“Okay” he glanced at me. “Your coming too.”
“What about Kane?” Isabel asked.
“Who?”
Kane walked out from his dark corner. The Redguard seemed a little surprised.

“He can come with us. Everyone grab a weapon.”

I grabbed a short sword off of the goblin that was cut along the throat. Kane walked over to a spear rack and grabbed two spears. He handed on to Isabel.

“Um… thank you, but I’m not good at fighting.” she said.
“Then don’t” Kane said.

The Redguard sheathed his Elvin dagger and unsheathed a mithril long sword.

“Alright, everyone stay behind me.” he said.

We followed him through the tunnels for about an hour. The halls were littered with bodies of goblins and some undead creatures. Eventually, we came upon a room. There were two skeletons at the door. A lesser Bone Walker stood next to them, and Gorrack stood in front of them.

“It was you! Gorrack will destroy you!”

Gorrack let out a loud roar and charged toward the Redguard with his battle axe over his head. The Redguard knocked the axe aside and swung his sword, but missed as Gorrack jumped back. The Redguard swung his sword toe the left, and jumped with his blade to his side he thrusted his sword at Gorrack’s head. Gorrack deflected his sword with his steal gauntlet. They both circled around each other. It was clear that they were both experienced fighters. Gorrack shouted at the undead warriors.

“Don’t just stand there, help me! Get the others!”

The lesser Bonewalker got into a spell casting stance. I looked over at Kane and Isabel.

“Kai will attack the skeletons, Kane will attack the Bonewalker.” Kane said. “You can take on two enemies at once, right?
“No problem. I need to get my anger out anyways.” I said.

I ran to the left wall. The skeletons fell for the bait, as they ran toward me. But the Bonewalker casted a fireball in my direction. I ran up the wall and jumped off to evade the spell. I turned in midair to face my enemies and threw my short sword, piercing the one further from me in the skull. As I landed, I immediately somersaulted to evade the other skeleton’s mace. I pulled the sword from the skull and turned to do a spinning attack, but missed. I’m still not use to the size of this sword. The skeleton raised his mace over his head, which gave me a perfect opportunity to thrust. I broke off two of his ribs. His mace came down on my arm, disarming me. My arm went num. I grabbed his mace with my left hand and pulled him toward me. I gave him a powerful side kick, snapping his spine. He dropped to the floor.

“Alright Kai!” Isabel cheered.

I turned to face Kane. The Bonewalker took a swipe at him, but he ducked down. He bolted upward and impaled the head of the Bonewalker. Its arms fell to its side, and its legs went limp. Kane pointed the tip of his spear at the ground. He stepped on the face and removed his spear. We both turned to the Redguard and Gorrack, who were still fighting.

“Here!” Isabel shouted as she ran up to the Redguard. She put her hand on his back. Magical energy started to surround him.
“You should be able to react quicker now.”

She ran over to me. “Let me see your arm.” I lifted my arm with my other arm. He grabbed it, and with her left hand glowing light blue, she held it an inch away from my arm. The glow extended and surrounded my arm. It faded is a few seconds.

“I don’t know if that will help, but I had to do something to help.” She said.
“Thanks”

My arm started to regain feeling. The Redguard started to react faster than Gorrack, so the spell was working. After three more minutes of fighting, the Redguard finally slashed Gorrack across the face. The he stabbed Gorrack in his stomach. Gorrack fell to the floor. “Grah! *cough* how could Gorrack loo..se…” He said as he fell unconscious.

“I think you should tell us your name now.” I said.
“Its Locke.” he said putting up his hood.
“Lets get out of here before anymore trouble.” Isabel said, smiling again.

We approached a door made out of wood. It was obvious that this was the exit, as there were rays of light shining through. Isabel ran to the door and slammed it open.

“Sunlight!” she yelled.

The ground right outside was a small hill. She ran to the top of the hill and looked around. I followed after her.

“Wow! We’re not in the Dragontail mountains anymore, are we?” I looked out into the field. It was very grassy, with long, soft, green, grass. It was covered with hills and large rock formations. The wind blew gently, and best of all, there was sunlight. Kand and Locke approached us.

“So, who hired you to rescue me?” Isabel asked Locke.

Locke looked at her and said “The Emperor”.
