Chorrol.com _ Skyrim _ Solstheim

Posted by: SubRosa Oct 15 2012, 11:00 PM

Looks like the next DLC will be named Dragonborn, and is set in Solstheim. The 1.8 patch has things in it such as bonemold, chitin, stahlrim, and nordic armor in it. There are new mapmarkers, and locations such as Raven Rock, Castle Karstagg, and more. Plus there a record for an .esm named Dragonborn. Flying on a dragon also seems in the works.

I am a little surprised they would be taking us back there, given that Solstheim was already in an expansion for Morrowind. But it does sound a lot more interesting than Dawnguard, and a lot more meaty than Hearthfire. It should be a good-sized land-mass for us to explore. That is guaranteed to be fun and give us lots more hours of play. Much like Point Lookout was for FO3, only without the mutant inbred Jeds and having part of our brain carved out and put in a jar.

I am also looking forward to seeing those armors in Skyrim. They are my favorites from Morrowind. Especially the bonemold. Seeing them back in hi-res (at least when the modding community remakes the textures that Bethesda releases! biggrin.gif) will be excellent.

That sounds very neat. As I've never played Morrowind, it will be the first time I get to see Solstheim.

I see this out before Christmas. Hopefully PS3 users will get to enjoy this one as well. kvleft.gif

Hardcore mode? Hardcore? Mode?

sad.gif I need to get over it. Beth is never going to make my Hardcore Mode. sad.gif What were some of the key features in the Morrowind version? Other than expanded land mass? The two things I've been wanting in Skyrim are...well you already know the first one, and I also want an Arena. HOw about that? Is an Arena a possibility? What do you all think?

EDIT: I just read some of what Solstheim is about. Wow, it looks so delicious. smile.gif

Werebears. Spears. "New" land. Daedric Realm. That is all.

Solstheim!! And lots more Nordly goodness, it seems. I’m pretty excited about the prospect of Hearthfire and the new DLC for my PS3 characters (if they survive the next patch). I’ll be skipping Dawnguard, though. I’ve had enough of The Vampire Game on the Xbox.

Arena-wise, I would not really like to see an open air Cyrodiil-style coliseum with teams and shiny uniforms. I would much prefer a gritty, underground network of pit fights and cage matches like you find in some bandit forts. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to fight for honor and glory in Skyrim. I would love to see some more filthy reasons. Throw in some options to cheat (in-game character cheating, not player exploits) and I’d be delighted. biggrin.gif

Even though it's titled "Dragonborn", I hope you don't have to play the main quest to go there. I'm tired of all this dragon nonsense. I don't want to be forced to play as a cliche hero just to visit the island where the biggest hunts of all time took place once.

Oh wait, new Daedric realm? Could it be the Harrowing of the Hunting Grounds?!?!?!

Doubt it, since the new files points to Haemaeus Mora and tentacles and Apocrypha as the new realm.

The Harrowing of the Hunting Grounds would do good in an expansion instead of a simple "dlc,". Werebears would be added, of course, considering they are native to Skyrim and the first time we truly saw them in lore(other than being rumors) was in the official novel, Infernal City, and they were no other than buffed up Nords wielding spears in the Hunting Grounds.

Geographically, it would be a huge woodland with no underbrush, an african-style savannah, a red sun, bloody rivers, and large canyons and tributaries. The Realm itself is beautiful but deadly. In other words, it would be a wild Safari with werecreatures for all eternity.

I don't think we will visit there. But in this Solshteim DLC, we get to visit a Telvanni Tower, and there is a file called H2H which hints Hand To Hand might make a return! Good for monkish type characters. I suppose Divayth Fyr might show up since he likes to travel Oblivion realms and he's a popular character in Morrowind, not to mentioned a Telvanni. I suppose we meet him in the game to deal with Mora and go to Apocrypha.

smile.gif Yea, I agree. And I hope that dragons can also be avoided altogether once we're in Solstheim, the way all my games currently are in Skyrim.

We're getting spears, a chance to return to a previously visited land and see what the passage of time has wrought, as well as a new Daedric Realm to explore? What more could we get?

I might buy it since I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of content provided withing Dawnguard. The only thing I wished they'd done was taken us someplace without so much snow...I guess it was just easier with all of their pre-existing textures. Oh well at least there seems to be tons of new stuff to enjoy.

If it is super similar to Solthseim in MW it will be trippy to go back there with good graphics. I'd like to see Thirsk, the Skaal village, and Fort Frostmoth revisited and revamped but something tells me that the landscape will have changed greatly since our last visit.

Good news everyone! A post from the Bethesda blog has said the following:

We’re also happy to announce Dragonborn will be available on PS3 and PC early next year.

So it looks like PS3 players will be able to play Dragonborn. Even if Hearthfire and Dawnguard are still looking problematic, that's some good news, at least.

No, I know that's not what it's all about, but I was pleasently surprised nonetheless since Dremoras from the past games until now seemed like violent warrior clan-like demons wanting their enemies to burst open or die.

One cannot become Thane of Raven Rock, since it's owned and run by the Dunmer, who abide by Dunmeri culture. They even make comments about the player being an outlander and etc.

But you can summon Dremora butler and a black market Dremora merchant who likes being a "pack mule."

See the video here. I http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5AVo1QHwHw&t=4m23s to the specific part of the video where the Dremora's are shown, since from the start to end, the user loves to make comments about sexual organs laugh.gif

That book looks neat, with the flowing words and all. Might be bit tough to actually read though... wink.gif

A Dremora merchant? I thought we already had one: Belethor.

I do love the Dremora butler's lines. So nice and sarcastic. Where Lydia's sarcasm is annoying, his is funny.

Wow, WTF man?? I'm still psyched for new content, new places to explore but that is a let down. sad.gif I was looking forward to an entirely new class of weapons.

Dangit.

Posted by: SubRosa Dec 9 2012, 02:10 AM

I was too. One of the ways I build my characters is around their weapon of choice. Once they pick a type of weapon, they never change from it. So one might be a mace and shield person, another might use battle-axes, another bows, etc... It is part of what makes them distinct from one another. So being able to make a spear and shield character would have been one more way to make my characters unique. Plus I am reserving the name Morrigan just for a spear-wielder.

Okay Xbox players DO NOT install the latest update.

I installed both this update and Dragonborn. Start gaming as usual. Then I notice my crusader can no longer cast the following spells: Candlelight, Fast Healing, Calm, and any magical flesh spells. This, obviously, is game breaking for me.

Tried moving Dragonborn off my hard drive, the problem persists. Tried deleting the update, re-installed the entire game from disc back onto the hard drive, re-downloading the latest update, but kept Dragonborn off out of the hard-drive. Problem still persists. I am thinking it's the update, then. Gotta be.

Posted by: SubRosa Dec 9 2012, 03:40 AM

Is that version 1.8? I have been running it on the PC with no problems.

Some searching on the Internets found someone with a similar problem. He fixed it by putting a different spell in both hands and dual-casting it. You might try that. Or try equipping a weapon in each hand and attacking with both. The thought is that perhaps your character has gotten "stuck" between equipping spells and equipping weapons, and this is a way to break out of that.

Also, does it do this with all of LHM's saves? Or with any other characters? It might just be one bad save file.

Posted by: Lady Saga Dec 9 2012, 11:51 AM

EDIT: I figured it out. I still think it has something to do with the patch, but I figured it out. Okay. smile.gif

My Xbox is not hooked up to the Internet, unless I manually put a cable on it. So that's what I did last night, and I downloaded update 1.8 and Dragonborn. Apparently, the way we actually cast spells on Xbox is now different. I feel like a klutz as I admit this, and there's probably information out there that EVERYONE knows but me...but just in case some of you all get stuck with this one...

To cast spells before 1.8, I had to hold down the button, let it go briefly, but then tap it quickly just after letting it go. After 1.8 the "tap" is no longer required. All I gotta do is hold down the spell and then let it go. Spell works.

*facepalm*

Do not feel bad. I can see where this would confound anyone. If they did the same thing on the PC, I would have had the same problem.

Posted by: Lady Saga Dec 10 2012, 09:24 PM

King of Beasts: it's not a glitch, Bethesda deliberately changed the way we cast spells on Xbox. They probably announced they were doing so, but I just never read up on this. I typically don't "read ahead" much, mostly because I don't want to come across spoilers. I like discovering things (mostly) spontaneously.

In effect, spellcasting is now easier than it was. I was just trying to do things the old way the other night.

SubRosa: Yea, and I suppose this little process I went thru the other other nite is good practice. I know when I get a PC, the challenge is going to be 10X then anything I've ever experienced on consoles!

I would have been so messed up if I had to cast spells like that.

Occasionally while I'm playing, spells that are normally held down for a continuous effect, or charged, get stuck and continue going after I've released the key. I wonder if this is anything like that?

I am only halfway through Dawnguard's quest and I have given up on it. I suppose I will keep it around for the huskies and the upgrades to the vampires though. From what I have read of Dragonborn's main quest, it looks like something I will never do, since you have to be halfway through the main quest of the regular game to start it. Maybe it could be manually started with the console though. To me it will just be a new landmass to explore, and a few new suits of armor. Still, that should be enough to be interesting.

I haven't even got Dawnguard yet! I'm planning on doing so soon, once my paycheck comes through, but I've kind of neglected Skyrim lately and I want to approach the two DLC packs with a character of relatively high level before I give them a try. Probably going to try and complete the main quest with one and then see how it goes from there.

As soon as it comes out, J'Zirlo will be one fast travel away from starting it... biggrin.gif ...

We've decided to not do Dawnguard...Not for any anti-vampire thing, simply that the risk of the glitch that wipes out towns with vp attacks cropping up in the wife's game is too great...Therefore, it's easier to not...

But definately looking forward to Dragonborn...As it the daughter...

Fair dues, I believe that's how DG is supposed to work...*Applauds*...

However, it seems that from reading the complaints on the Bethesda board, the glitch happens too often to risk...And it seems it's mostly to high level characters...

So the daugher is level 65...I'm Lvl 62...And the wife is Lvl 50...

*Shrug*...The daughter's game is already glitched with ressurrected characters...The wife has various shopkeepers that now have less than the starting amount of gold despite investment...I'm sure my game has some stuff, oh yeah, the spontaneous dead dragon appearance...Simply turn around and voila! one badly resolved dead dragon morphing out of the ground...Sooo odd...

Sooo, three pretty glitched games already...Think we're gonna get away with the vampire attack glitch?... laugh.gif ...

Posted by: King Coin Dec 11 2012, 08:40 PM

Posted by: McBadgere Dec 11 2012, 08:46 PM

Yeah, we're all waaaaay too attatched to our characters to do that...Hell, I still have the original one that's completely broken on a save...I cannot get rid of Wulff Olfsson!!... biggrin.gif ...

This is the main reason we don't have an X-Box yet...Oh, that and how we get t'internet from over there < where the internet is, to all the way over there >>>> where the TV/Playstation is without an internet extention lead all over the floor...

Hmmm. mellow.gif That's the question, aint it?

I wouldn't risk a current game, I would start a new one. I'm really enjoying DG, personally...it would be worth it to me.

Posted by: SubRosa Dec 11 2012, 09:47 PM

Strange thing is for the week or so I played the DG main quest, I never got a vampire attack on a town. After the quest to rescue the Moth Priest I started getting attacked by vampires on the road all the time though. Pretty much every random encounter in the game seemed to have been replaced with a vampire attack.

OTOH, I did find some really cool standalone dungeons added by Dawnguard, like Redwater Den. Tolvald's Cave was apparently in the vanilla game, but it got a makevoer in DG, with some winged Chaurus'. I was standing next to a giant egg sack thingie when one burst forth out of it and attacked me, still covered in goo. I am guessing they are in all the Falmer dungeons now, along with the new upgraded Falmer. Plus of course the upgrades to the vanilla vampire dungeons too. So even without the main quest, DG does add some interesting things.

The Girl’s character is exploring Solstheim without the MQ active, and so far it looks well worth the money to me. smile.gif

With Dawnguard I have had problematic vampire attacks in some games (during broad daylight, starting at level 5), but they are next to absent in others. I am not going to risk my PS3 characters with Dawnguard either. I do hope we get Hearthfire, though.

Wow. I haven't seen one of these bursting pod things, Yikes!. I have been in some DG dungeons, though, they're not quite as linear as the typical Skyrim dungeon (in and out). Which is cool. I like being challenged sometimes by the dungeon itself, not just the enemies and traps in that dungeon. DG has defintely ramped this up a bit.

I still get more confused by Cyrodiil's dungeons, though, even though they're sparser. I can't tell you how many Cyrodiil dungeons I've been in where all a sudden I realize I am totally lost! I'll find myself walking my character in circles and whatnot. This never hardly ever happens in the typical Skyrim dungeon.

I realize not many of you might share my passion for mazes. smile.gif

I have the same problem with getting lost in Oblivion's dungeons. There is one goblin cave north of the IC, and south west of Bruma, that has like 5 or 6 levels. It gets me completely turned around and lost. I think it is the one with the dead drunken goblin in the barrel.

If you thought Oblivion's dungeons were bad, you should have tried some of Morrowind's; there were some there that bent spacetime. And I don't mean that in a jokey way either; they were like one of Escher's works. I've spent hours wondering through the same cave whilst on the verge of weeping through sheer bafflement.

Then again, I've also got lost in a single room when I was playing Halo, so I may not be the best person to judge.

I have done Morrowind as well. Most Morrowind dungeons that I recall were only 4 rooms or so. But there were a few big ones - the one that you have to do to get the ancestral bow of Urishikalu chief as part of the Main Quest comes to mind first - I got all turned around my first time in there. There is another Dwemer ruin that has about 5-6 levels, and multiple doors between each, and some places that can only get gotten to by going through a specific door on one level, and then another specific door on another level. Arkngthand I think it was, east of Balmora, where you have to get the puzzle box. Then I recall a third one - Kogoruhn? - that was a stronghold north of Red Mountain. I think it had about 10 levels, and a tunnel that led under the ghostgate and opened up inside of it.

That sounds like something I'd be interested in...that dungeon you speak of, SubRosa. I have heard that none of the dungeons respawn in that game, too. *sigh* one of these days....I will come to you Vradenfell. Did I spell that right? Probably not. biggrin.gif
