We in the building thread have decided that for some hidden elements of the library, the password will be in the form of a riddle. Now I thought this would be a good way to get new riddles and have some fun too. biggrin.gif My first five; see if you can figure them out and tell me if they are too easy.

Blade without pommel, hilt, or edge.
Warriors trample,
Alchemists prize.
Enormous in number, not size.

Has legs but does not walk,
has a back without a spine.
sometimes wood, sometimes stone,
often arranged in a line.

It burns without fire,
lights without heat.
Ever rising, ever lowering,
the perfect lamp ever designed.

Weapons like daggers,
armor like mail.
Your death is its breath,
but on a beach it will die.

lowers mountains, widens streams, destroys towns.
no wall can stop it, no man can dodge it.
It waits on no one, but slows for those expectant.

I've worked out number four. But I must say, last time that it was presented to a group of people, no-one managed to work out what it was, so it must be hard.

I have a contribution:

From the beginning of eternity,
To the end of time and space,
To the beginning of every end,
And the end of every place...

I think it may be a little too easy though.

Posted by: Red Aug 27 2005, 02:37 PM

Ok, I guess I'll add the ones I was working on a few days ago. By the way, I made these, so don't think you'll get the answers so soon.

His beauty shines bright,
and then it darkens.
A line divides him,
but shows history.

Smart you must be,
to kill with me.
Thoughtful you must be,
to wield my power.

The tiles of the floor make a picture of a bear.
An Imperial hidden among letters and words. Follow closely.
First the fourth and fifth, then the thirty-fourth, then the thirty-fifth, followed by the thirty-seventh.

Inside of us it lives.
A wepon, even a sealent for the re-living.
It can help or hurt your beautiful life.
The masters can find infanite life.

Dancing over the melting base,
I hurt those who would dare dance with me.

You lose, I gain.
You drop, I bring you up.
You die, you live.
I am the cause of these and more,
What am I?

I hope I don't sound stupid but I can't figure any of those out, but I just thought of one if one of you wanted it,

We work all day, with nothing to say,
We never do trouble or our work will double,
With beastly powers we work for hours,
Mining, Farming, Attending,
We are the silent servers of the world,
But we are paid by none but our own hopes and dreams,
Who are we?

Maybe a beginning of an easy riddle, you guys could mess with it, I'm going to see if I can figure some of yours out....

1. Magical Scrolls or Staves..

2. Chairs

3. This one is hard, I would guess hope...

4. Dreugh , but you should change it to "but on a beach brings it's death" as it would rhyme and sound better, or at least have it end with death

5. Rain

Well the confusing part is the sun DOES burn so everyone would rule fire and the sun out, or at least that's my view...

that rules out the sun, as it does burn and it is lights with heat, or ar you suggesting that the increase in heat during the day is caused by timed outburst of molecular movement.

My Contribution:

Green-eye had a problem, he had two irregular shaped containers, one would fill five gallons, and the other three. The problem was, he needed four gallons. Because the two containers are irregular, he cannot simply pour out any particular measurement, so how will Green-Eye get 4 gallons?

The answer: Pour three gallons into the three gallon container, then pour that three into the five gallon container so that it has three gallons. Refill the Three gallon container and pour it into the five gallon container until it's full, this will give you one gallon in the three gallon container. Pout the five gallon container out, then pour in the one gallon from the three gallon container, refill it and pour in the remaining three gallons so that you have four gallons.

while the sun does make heat, I was thinking sunburn, a burn without fire, and the sunlight, which does not produce heat like other forms of illumination. Just my thoughts when I was making the riddle.

1. Imperial (troops)?
2. A stool?
3. The Sun?
4. A fish
5. Time

I got the last two because they sound oddily familier... Do I sense a hint of Tolkien? Of course, I could be completely wrong... And it could be written by a different author. biggrin.gif

Hmm... Die Hard with a Vengeance I believe is the film that riddle appeared in... and it's a good one too... maybe the builders of the mod could somehow make an interactive riddle, where you would have to place exactly four [insert Tamrielic weight measurement here] onto a pressure plate in order to open the secret area... Pretty sure it would be near impossible to do in game, but now that we have those 'mini-games' for things like lock picking, maybe we can also create our own with the CS...

Posted by: DoomedOne Sep 1 2005, 07:05 AM

I don't remember that riddle from die hard with a vengeance. I had to answer this question in science.

It would be a nice puzzle to solve to get into a secret room. If the game reigsters weight then just have two vases of different sizes, a platform with a water-hose hanging above it that you can switch on and off so you place a vase under a water hose, turn it on to fill it, turn it off, move the vase, take the other one, and then just figured out how to make one pour into the other.

Yeah, might be a hard to implement that in OB, we'll just have to see.

Another idea for the secret room would be to take the winning book and place it at the foot of a water fountain or something, and a the room would open somewherez... I just thought of resident evil and this came up, the first three had some really interesting ways to get places...

Yes, but we might as well add in a written riddle too. A hidden peice of paper has the directions on it (which books to pull and in which order). This might also be a good way as to incorporate some Morrowind books in...

Here in our library lies a secret stone,
Only moved when books are shown.
One by one they must be bound,
In synchronizing order they must be found.

To begin, a book entitled with a 36,
Lessons written by a total Nix.

Second comes a book on the Til list,
At the very bottom, it's floating as a writs.

Third is written for research,
War magic is like a church.

If you found out my riddle,
And found the right book,
Do not hesitate, nor twiddle.
For adventure awaits, even if you're a crook!

Uh.. ya...
huh.gif
I tried my best. See if you can figure it out...

P.S. I changed it to three books; couldn't think of any more ryhmes.

occasionaly I get into enourmous spurts of productive work. Today was one of those times, kranked these riddles out in fifteen minutes;

two white spheres in two sinkholes,
roaming, rolling, middle like coals.
Ringed by water, earth, or green,
when asleep dissappear and can't be seen.

clear as crystal or red as blood,
sometimes a poison, othertimes fine,
I have many tastes, though alone I've none,
Naturally I never a straight line run.

easily I rip and easily I rend,
fire my bane and ink my friend.
I hold the history of ages past,
but leave meoutside and I shall not last

sharp as a sword yet brittle as clay
sometimes opaque sometimes clear as day
you won't wish to eat me, for I'll cut you up right
use me instead to improve your eyesight

I'm twice in the palace
also twice apart.
not much into fighting
but armor let's me start.
I'm in the caves and in the rains,
as well as shade and lakes.

I have rings you cannot wear,
and grain you cannot eat.
I stand forever,
falling when I die.

I solved this a different way:
Fill the 5 gal container and pour 3 gal into the 3 gal container leaving 2 gal in the 5 gal container. Empty the 3 gal container and pour the 2 gal from the 5 gal container into the 3 gal container. Blade without pommel, hilt, or edge.
Warriors trample,
Alchemists prize.
Enormous in number, not size.

Has legs but does not walk,
has a back without a spine.
sometimes wood, sometimes stone,
often arranged in a line.

It burns without fire,
lights without heat.
Ever rising, ever lowering,
the perfect lamp ever designed.

Weapons like daggers,
armor like mail.
Your death is its breath,
but on a beach it will die.

lowers mountains, widens streams, destroys towns.
no wall can stop it, no man can dodge it.
It waits on no one, but slows for those expectant.

Ah, good ones!

let's see. I'm not sure about number three, but I go for the moon or the stars. They both burn without fire. (ok, stars do, but they're awfully far away.)
And they light without heat. (right, stars do provide heat, but there isn't much left when it gets here)
And the rising and falling would refer to the movement they make across the sky through night.

yeah, it's the sun. The rest of the thread has all the answers (or at least 98% of them).

Rainer thinks that maybe this one might do:

I mimic everything you do
Throughout the day, I grow taller.
As night descends, I die.

What am I?

Since these riddles went mostly unanswered (and forgotten), I shall reveal the answers.

His beauty shines bright,
and then it darkens.
A line divides him,
but shows history.

VIVEC

Smart you must be,
to kill with me.
Thoughtful you must be,
to wield my power.

SHEHAIi

The tiles of the floor make a picture of a bear.
An Imperial hidden among letters and words. Follow closely.
First the fourth and fifth, then the thirty-fourth, then the thirty-fifth, followed by the thirty-seventh.

TIBER SEPTIM

Inside of us it lives.
A wepon, even a sealent for the re-living.
It can help or hurt your beautiful life.
The masters can find infanite life.

MAGICK

Dancing over the melting base,
I hurt those who would dare dance with me.

FIRE

You lose, I gain.
You drop, I bring you up.
You die, you live.
I am the cause of these and more,
What am I?

NECROMANCER
