Its great to see this is raising so much discussion. Xulima is not one of my favourites as it does seem to control how you progress in the game .
Over the years I have enjoyed a number of varieties of RPG with my particular favourites being Gothic 3, Baldurs Gate 1 & 2, Icewind Dale 1 & 2, Dungeon Master & Chaos Strikes Back, Oblivion and Skyrim, Drakansang 1 & 2, Dungeon Siege 1 & 2, Pool of Radience -Ruins of Myth Dranor, Eye of the Beholder 1 to 3, Ishar 1 to 3, Sacred 1, Divine Divinity, the Might & Magic Series, the Spell Force 1 & 2 series, the Dragon Age Trilogy, The Mass Effect Series, Two Worlds 1 & 2, and more recently, Malevolence, Divinity Original Sin, Blackguards 1 & 2, Legends of Dawn, Legend of Grimrock 1 & 2, Pillars of Eternity and, another reacent find on steam, Heroes of Steel.
I have found Risen 1 to 3 & Dark Souls 1 particularily disappointinting as I am able to make little progress in these.
I also play & enjoy an number of computer strategy games ranging from The Lords of Midnight and Domdarks Revenge in the 1980s' to the Total War series, Heroes of Might & Magic Series, Age of Wonders series, Legends of Eisenwald, Myth 1 to 3, The Mount & Blade series, Blitzkrieg 1 & 2, Desert Rats, D Day and the other game in that series, Panzers 1 to 3 and, a recent offshoot Lords of Midnight, Legions of Ashworld.
It can probably be argued that Lords of Midnight, Doomdarks Revenge, Might & Magic, Age of Wonders, Spell Force, Legends of Eisenwald, Myth, Mount & Blade and Legions of Ashworld link the 2 genre in a nuber of ways, having defined quests and treasures.
Hope many of you have had the pleasure of enjoying these and many others I have enjoyed and may get some ideas for games to try in the future. Lords of Midnight and Doomdarks Revenge are both available from GOG for the PC and have been recently made available for android tablets and many of the other older games here can be obtained through GOG.
Lets hope ther are many more RPG and Strategy games that we can all enjoy and enthusiasts like Alex keep producing new and exciting ideas.
