I would love to see a fallout game set anywhere outside the U.S. for a change. After Fallout 1, 2, Tactics, 3, and New Vegas, the American Wasteland is pretty same old, same old. I was hoping that Fallout 4 would be set in London. Big Ben, black cabs, double-decker buses, mutant ravens in the Tower of London, a blue police call box... There is so much you could do with that setting.

QUOTE(mirocu @ Apr 22 2017, 09:25 AM) Yeah, that would be interesting. As long as it's all one disc and does not require Steam or any other type of online verification nonsense.. So yeah, China. Or, and bear with me here, Japan or South Korea... Oh 'Rocu smh QUOTE(SubRosa @ Apr 22 2017, 10:39 AM) I would love to see a fallout game set anywhere outside the U.S. for a change. Definitely. This one just wonders how they would market it. One of the big complaints about the idea of a non-American setting for a Fallout game over on Bethsoft was that it wouldn't be a Fallout game with the American setting. Khajiit really doesn't understand this, but they could totally spin it off the main series and call it something else. Something new.

I disabled the compass in Miss Vicious's game. I'm pretty apprehensive about this but I really want her game to feel different from any of my others. So this is one way to do that. I tried several HUD mods, and found a really cool one which let us move all the HUD sections around (Action Points, Weapon Health, and so on) but this mod would not allow me to remove the compass. And it's too bad, because the one which does allow compass removal conflicts with the first mod. So I had to make that choice.

And Renee raises another thread from the dead. Going to respond to over 3-year old comments. Hard disagree with the American Wasteland being same old, same old. There's a lot of variety to it--it just has to be presented well. For all their flaws, I think 1/2/NV, 3, 4, and 76 feel pretty distinct in this regard. That being said, there is some stuff that gets recycled too much (like Deathclaws and Super Mutants being apparently everywhere). That being said, it would be really cool to see how other countries are handling it. Interplay did have plans for a Fallout: Resource Wars game in Europe. There's so much room for creativity there. Europe was hit especially hard by the overall Resource Wars, the Euro-Middle Eastern War, the dissolution of the European Commonwealth, and the European Civil War. From all the references that we have in the series, it sounds like Europe is doing even worse than the U.S. in the post-War world. China, in particular, would be an intriguing setting, I think. They were the mortal enemies of the U.S. in Fallout, after all. I also wonder how much it would reference real-world China's government and politics. It would be quite different because Fallout is based on 1950s American culture and how it envisioned the future. While I can't speak too much on what other countries' 1950s culture was like, there is a pretty distinct flavor to that timeframe here in America. But I hate the whole "It's not a real [INSERT HERE] game!" garbage that capital G gamers tend to spout out. It's a real Fallout game if the Fallout title is slapped on it and no arbitrary definition is going to change that. But it would likely be a monumental shift in feel, tone, etc.

QUOTE(SubRosa @ Sep 6 2020, 08:21 PM) It sounds like a great idea. But my writing plate is full with Stormcrow. And I still want to get back to finishing Seven Reimagined.
Eh, I was afraid of that. No biggie, just an idea I had.

You can write it, Khajiit! Write the first one, at least, maybe I will join you, but I have to feel inspiration. I'd see what you come up with, and then if that sparks some ideas, there we go. Because I'm not sure how those mags are written, you see. Anyway, go for it. Maybe Rader or Lopov will write one, who knows? How long are these pulp mags? I can crank out a couple paragraphs, no prob. I'd have to see the style and get a feel for how those things are written. I had some random thoughts about the Fallout universe and was going to pull this thread up anyway at some point, since it's sort of like an 'anything goes' sort of thread. Well, ever since writing Janet's tale in 2017 I began to wonder what is the premise and background of the Fallout games is supposed to be? I never read about it, really. Did not ever play the first two games. I remember at some point that these games are supposed to be set in an alternate reality, which split from our own society on Earth at some point in the 1950s. Okay, Wikipedia says The series is set in a fictionalized United States in an alternate history scenario that diverges from reality following World War II.[41] And so this may sound dumb, but some of the cultural aspects of the game began to make me wonder. Because in my own stories with Janet and Vicious, I am filling in some blanks, especially with music, and recreational drugs, and just little things here and there. Maybe these little things would make a true lore buff cringe. But for instance, with music. I am saying ... there's no way everyone would still be listening to the same exact music types (Big Band, Jazz, etc.) and ONLY those music types. Culturally, the human sprit constantly seeks new sounds, especially in our relatively new (historically speaking) electronic age. Before electricity, there was classical music, bluegrass, spiritual hymns, and so on. Music really didn't change much over the previous two centuries, not in the sense that overall styles were being created as societies changed. After electricity though, everything began to evolve at a rapid pace. Every decade there are new styles of music going on. Jazz, Blues, Rock 'n' Roll, Rhythm & Blues, Soul, Disco, Funk, Rap, Hip Hop, Electronica, Acid House, Pop, Girl Groups, Country, Trip Hop, I mean, the list goes on and on. And so (to me) I don't feel entirely bad thinking that some changes have could been made, somewhere along the line, and for this ramble I am only just focusing on music types. In my own game & stories, I sometimes add what I think could possibly happen. In Janet's game for instance, she listened to Heavy Metal and a slew of bands which I sensed she likes and grew up with. It's the sort of thing I would never go into a forum full of lore-hounds and admit, I'd probably get crushed! Gah, I am rambling. But I'm saying there are some gaps here and there, and I'm only focusing on some artistic gaps. I am saying, there's no way everyone would be listening only to the same stuff that was popular hundreds of years ago.

I think the lore-hounds would say that after the bombs dropped, not much has happened culturally. People were too busy trying to survive to bother with making music.
I disagree however. There is always downtime in life, even if you are a hunter-gatherer constantly moving in search of food. I think a lot of the electronic forms of music would vanish, and go back to the earlier styles of one person with a guitar or flute. Since most people probably would not have power.
The Vaults are anyone's guess. It depends on what Vault-Tec put in the vaults before they closed. So they might have recording equipment and things like keyboards and electric guitars. There was the one vault of musicians in Fallout 3. People in the vaults would have a lot more free time they would need to fill. So I imagine entertainment like music would be popular. It would depend on what they had, or could build from scrap in the vault.
Wasteland Radio probably would be very dependent upon Pre-War records however. That would be most of the recorded music around that they could broadcast. Though I certainly can see radio stations having live music, like the old woman violinist in Fallout 3. They might even record it, and start passing it around with caravaners.
On the subject of Pre-War music, I also agree that it would not be all big band and swing. A long time passed between the point where Fallout history diverged from the real world and the Great War happened. I think the bombs fell in 2077? So that is over a century of progress. And as you say, music would not remain stuck in Dean Martin mode all that time. There would be all those forms of music you mentioned, and more we have not even heard of yet.

I agree that it’s super dumb that absolutely no new music seems to have been made between the 1950’s and 2077, but there does seem to be at least localized music culture in the post war scene, as evidenced by Magnolia at The Third Rail in Goodneighbor. She can’t be the only one right? As for the pulp mags, we don’t really know how long the stories are or what style they are done in, as the books in the Fallout games aren’t actually readable. I figure they were done like the old school pulp magazines in real life; the publishers of the mags would pay different writers to put their stories in the magazines (much of H.P.Lovecraft’s work was published in this ways). Here is a link to the wiki for Astoundingly Amazing Tales. The titles seem to indicate that they are sci-fi/horror in theme. The story I had in mind to write for this is a horror story.

Khajiit: I don't know how those pulp rags are written in real-life, never had the fortune to ever read one. But if you write one first, I can get a glimpse of their style, at least. Yes, I agree there could be some 2277 music which is localized, and other musicians are out there. Lots of blanks to get filled in, not just with music. Rader is doing a great job at filling them in with his Mariah story. QUOTE(SubRosa @ Sep 7 2020, 04:54 PM) I think the lore-hounds would say that after the bombs dropped, not much has happened culturally. I am talking about the 100+ years before the bomb dropped though, is what I'd say to the lore hounds. QUOTE I think the bombs fell in 2077? So that is over a century of progress. Yes. That's what I'm saying. Maybe the music in the game is supposed to be a mere representation of how the Fallout universe is portrayed, while our character sits in Moriarty's enjoying some scotch. Therefore, when we hear Let's Go Sunning, this is not necessarily a song which was written in 1931, it's merely a song which sets the tone, sets the general atmosphere. Let's go Sunning could have been written in 2076, just weeks before the Great War. By the way, I am not suggesting that all those music styles (metal, hip hop, etc.) should be in the game. In fact, maybe since this is supposed to be an alternate reality, some music styles would get created which are nothing like we hear in our modern times. QUOTE I think a lot of the electronic forms of music would vanish, and go back to the earlier styles of one person with a guitar or flute. Since most people probably would not have power. Good point, especially for those who were forced to stay aboveground. In my thinking, a lot of the music in the game would have been preserved somehow in vaults. Thanks for not laughing at me and my silly thoughts, everybody! This post has been edited by Renee: Sep 8 2020, 02:41 PM

QUOTE(mirocu @ Sep 9 2020, 04:59 AM) When I was heavily into Fallout 3, I used to listen to the ingame music on youtube every night. Good music and good times I can see this. What is your favorite? Mine is Let's go Sunning, as I mentioned above. Absolutely clueless and idyllic music, in which all is wonderful and fabulous. But I like all the Fallout 3 music to some degree. Also, which do you like better, Fallout 3's music or New Vegas? I'm not as wowed by Vegas's, and neither is Linda. She'll often turn radios off if she's alone!

Not a big fan of Roy Brown or the “Anything Goes” song. I had to look up the New Vegas soundtrack because I couldn’t remember most of the songs! After looking it up though, I do like many of the songs. That said, I guess either Fallout3’s soundtrack was just more memorable or maybe I simply played Fallout3 more.
