I long for scenes where man hath never trod

Untroubling and untroubled where I lie
The grass below—above the vaulted sky.”

Great Dramtis Personae and wonderful images as Kraven begins his second book!

We learn that he is still in the Arena of slaves, monsters and gladiators, and battling with his own demons. Knowing what we know, the metaphorical wolf seems most appropriate to foreshadow his path.

That was quite an intro. Kravens a restless man, and seeks release, any release, from his father and his role in killing Gwenebeth.

Acadian: Thanks, Acadian! I am excited to begin this book, and I am devoting my time and effort into fleshing it out the best I can wink.gif

The wolf will play an important role here.

mALX:Thanks, mALX. And to answer your question, no. The wolf here represents his doubts and fears. When he was young he was was afraid of wolves, and the doubts he has and fears that come are more or less in the "form" of a wolf. It is a metaphor, in other words wink.gif

King Coin: The last story was about Kraven and his lust for glory and to rise. Here we may find him in that position, but it might not be as he imagined. We'll go back to the start, and see how he was put in chains. Why know why, but I think it would be best to tell it.

Kraven desires to be released from many things, and many of these things will be shown. Thanks!!

Nice that youre taking the time to delve into Kravens past.

An interesting carriage ride, despite the dour driver.

Lets see. . . . There are several vessels from Morrowind in port, along with some uniformed Dunmer inside the tavern. Kraven is angry over life at home. Hes working on his second big mug of ale. A siren song from the card tables is calling him. . . . Methinks the evenings forecast looks a mite foreboding.

Good job bringing the Argonian barkeep to life with just the right small touches.

GAAAAAH! Kraven is near the Trading Company that Draken was dealing with in his story!

It is exciting to see him in Cyrodiil! Is this his early life before being taken to Morrowind as a slave?

Great Write, just still trying to get my bearings with this part of Kraven's story, lol.

You're right. This is near the Trading Company we see Draken in, though four centuries before Kraven. I'm sure he must have left a mark somewhere there in his old squabbles.

I knew there was a time difference, but ... Draken could easily live 4 centuries, thought I might be seeing a crossover, lol. I LOVE them !!

GAAAAAH! All that hopping back and forth between books! Lol. Just teasing.

I am liking this Jahukawei character, everything I've heard about him so far shows a very interesting character!

This card game, like the board game, was more than a game of luck. It was about strategy, knowing exactly when to bluff and when to back down, knowing how to maneuver and adapt to the ever-changing field. Some participants were too cautious, never gambling more than the minimum raise even when they had a good hand. Others were far too aggressive, trying to bully the rest of the table with ridiculous bets even when they had nothing. A participants natural tendencies blossomed through if one knew what to search for.

The recruit, for example, was clearly an amateur here. He remained with weak hands instead of folding his cards. He was a chaser, not pleased enough with cards good enough to collect the pot. He was always looking for the perfect hand, hoping to win large and collect the pot that kept on growing until it was won. As a result, he kept getting caught with failed hands and having to pay a price. It didnt seem to slow his betting, though. He was one of those fellows with more septims than sense, which suited Kraven just fine.

LOVED this whole discussion! Great Write!

An interesting evening of gambling. I noticed one of the tables was playing chess and it reminded me of how Kraven will one day best Andrano at that game. For now, however, the long haired farmer plays a skillful hand of cards. You gave us a good feel for the game without belaboring its details. He has been winning, but not so aggressively as to drive off the table. Well played!

mALX: A Draken cameo would be splendid, wouldn't it? But I have a few cameos that will make an appearance in this story. None of my vampiric characters, I'm afraid. But it will nonetheless be surprising.

Thanks, mALX! Jahukawei is a special character here.

Acadian: Ah, you remembered! Kraven had some head for chess, too, but card games offer much more coin. I'm not much of a card player, and in fact, I've never gambled. So I tried to be a bit brief on the entire rule-of-cards details. The main focus here is Kraven and the Legion soldiers, so I'll try to set the scene on them specifically smile.gif

Thanks!

So, Kraven is trying to toy with and distract his fellow card players. It worked, while generating some bruised egos and feelings from those who seem to believe in what they do. Between his card skill and revealing too much of his own cynicism, he has managed to generate some antagonism from those used to wielding authority. Perhaps not a happy recipe.

Softening his rhetoric and buying a round for the table would be worthy of consideration at this point. Something tells me, however, that soothing the situation is not in the cards that Kraven holds.

Nice job of building the tension here!

QUOTE

Thats not what Ive heard, Kraven replied. Rumor has it that some of the folks are getting tired of Imperial presence in their lands. In Morrowind, for example. Folks there dont like Imperial intrusion. They call us outlanders.

This was my favorite paragraph, loved the bit of lore woven in here!

I think it is funny the Legion is on their off hours trying so hard to recruit new members, unsure if they get a commission or if they're just trying to get rid of Kraven because he is beating them at cards, lol.

Kraven's answer sounded like Draken talking, I was surprised to see him not brushing off the talk during his card game with his usual piercing look and telling them to "shut up and play if they are going to," lol.

QUOTE

Kraven chuckled. Oh! How dare they try to kill you in the middle of battle? Dont they know youre busy trying to bury a sword in their chest? How rude!

LOVED Kraven's sarcasm here, lol.

Kraven should have told them to shut up or play, as it turns out. Next time he'll listen to me, lol. Great Write !!

Acadian: Kraven Desselius. Always making friends. It would be wise of him to buy a round of drinks for his card buddies, but he doesn't buy too many drinks. Not even for himself. Jahukawei had to pour some for free laugh.gif

He'd have to find another method, but we both know it might do him no good. Thanks!!

mALX: Thanks, mALX. I am a sucker for lore, as we all know.

Probably both. Fresh young peaseant lad makes better Legion officers than hot-headed nobles smile.gif

Well, in this situation Kraven isn't the hardened fellow he becomes. He's young and free and a bit bitter, but not to the degree that we'll see him after these Chapter 1 intros(which again I say it is a prequel section showing the events before book 1). After this we'll get back into what happened after Gwenabeth's death. So he's not faced Polish-His-Spears, or Shavaash or the wrath of Andrano's whip. That comes later, right now the only problem he has is an abusive father and the debt that his family is in. I suppose in the future if he ever comes to playing cards again, he'll tell them to shutup or go to Oblivion biggrin.gif

Thanks!!
