Brevity is the soul of wit. Polonius in Hamlet

Heres the context:

This business is well ended.
My liege, and madam, to expostulate
What majesty should be, what duty is,
Why day is day, night night, and time is time,
Were nothing but to waste night, day and time.
Therefore, since brevity is the soul of wit,
And tediousness the limbs and outward flourishes,
I will be brief: your noble son is mad:
Mad call I it; for, to define true madness,
What is't but to be nothing else but mad?
But let that go.

Lol Polonius.

I have always been fond of Tennyson:

Though much is taken, much abides; and though
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

One of my favorite DC heroes quote:

"Justice. Crime can not be tolerated. Criminals thrive on the indulgence of society's understanding. You cannot lead these men unless you are prepared to do what is necessary to defeat evil. Criminals thrive on the indulgence of society's understanding. Your compassion is a weakness your enemies will not share. Like Constantinople or Rome before it the city has become a breeding ground for suffering and injustice. It is beyond saving and must be allowed to die. "Freedom is just a pretty way of saying that you've gone off the grid. For better or for worse, you're out of options. But we call it freedom, we write songs about it, you probably crank them in your car, never thought about it much. Some people think it's exhilarating, not having your future mapped out. Others start to drown in all that nothing. Maybe you'll enjoy for a moment the purity of doing what you want when you want, beer for breakfast, sex in the afternoon, but obligations sneak up... duty, moral code. Some of us are wired to put ourselves back into cages. Freedom is just that moment of calm before the dread sets in. Because no matter what you freed yourself from, you only get so far down the open road, car windows down, music blasting, before you are forced to take a turn, make a choice, and sentence yourself to the next adventure."-Aiden Waite.

St Patrick's Day isn't an ethnic holiday!!!!

Posted by: Acadian Mar 18 2014, 04:20 PM

Just some gentle thoughts here -

Ethnicity can be defined by a variety of criteria that can include national origin, common culture, race or religion. I suppose Independence Day (USA), Cinco de Mayo (Mexico), Easter (Christian), Anzac Day (Australia), Passover (Jewish), Ramadan (Islam) and a host of other holidays could all be considered ethnic holidays. I, for one, celebrate those who celebrate them.

While Im not a theologian, my understanding is that St Patrick was the patron saint of Ireland and is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland. By linking ethnic holidays with St Patricks Day and concluding such holidays are dumb, are we to infer dislike of the Irish? Or dislike of all those who celebrate the holidays mentioned above? Id be surprised if that was the intent of the quote above.

The only thing sort of dumb I find about St Paddies day is its modern glamorization of excessive drinking. But, thats just me and I suppose the same can be said of many holidays. smile.gif

The fourth of July celebration is a bad example because it is about celebrating American independence. It is one of the few holidays where the way it is celebrated actually makes sense.

I think I may have friend SubRosa beat by almost two years. I meet her Sep 2012 post and raise it by this quote from Episode 33 of Buffy's Book 1 posted here in Sep 2010 -

*

I vividly recalled what Kud-Ei had said: "Buffy, something is different about you. I see sadness in your eyes. . . and something else. I do not know what happened to you this last time you were out of town, and I am sure I probably do not want to know. They say wisdom comes from experience - and experience comes from bad judgment. Somehow, it looks like you have discovered that for yourself. Your eyes show a quiet wisdom, and the scars of one who has paid for it. The wisdom is quite attractive on you, but I hope the scars will fade." Kud-Ei had then smiled and gently placed her hand on my cheek. "I believe you have grown up, my Apprentice."

*

Now, that said, I did not invent the quote. I first heard from a an old aviator way back when I was a young aviator. Sage counsel methinks, and most appropriate for both Pappy and Kud-Ei to share. smile.gif
