Chorrol.com _ General RPG Discussion _ Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Posted by: Vital Jan 23 2014, 09:14 PM

Don't know if any of you have heard of this, but I just saw it and well... Wow. If it's as good as it looks and sounds then it'll be an amazing game, imo. The game has ahttp://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1294225970/kingdom-come-deliverance which already has over £280,000 out of a goal of £300,000 with 28 days to go. So it's pretty safe to say it'll get the money to be made.

So, what is Kingdom Come: Deliverance? Basically it's an open-world RPG similar in style to a TES game. However it is set in 15th century Europe, so no elves or argonians etc (one of the downsides imo). There is more realism; the combat looks amazing and historically accurate, there is a need to eat and sleep and food can even go rotten. There's hunting, side-quests, large-scale battles. Much like in a TES game you can be who you want (except an elven mage). There is also the ability to play a bard-like character and be less combat focused, using your silver tongue to solve situations, which I think could be super fun.

There are tons of other cool features and stuff. Watch the video! The kickstarter is being done to prove interest in the game. If they get £300,000 they will have plenty of investors and publishers, if not, well then there wouldn't have been enough interest in the game anyway. I personally think it looks awesome. What are your thoughts?

Posted by: mirocu Jan 23 2014, 09:47 PM

Sounds like a cool game. Think I might wanna keep an eye on this one smile.gif

You get it first, Vital, and then you can tell us how to overcome all the bugs rollinglaugh.gif

Posted by: Kiln Jan 24 2014, 12:34 AM

Hope they can make it. Sounds like an awesome change from the now generic magic and dragons RPG's that saturate the market.

Posted by: SubRosa Jan 24 2014, 12:51 AM

It sounded interesting until I looked at the link. It is yet another game where you are forced to play the character they give you, right down to your name, gender, and I presume appearance. No thanks.

Posted by: Kiln Jan 24 2014, 01:30 AM

If it is half as good as they're pitching it to be, I'll get over it.

Posted by: Vital Jan 24 2014, 01:33 AM

I haven't seen anything about character creation so I can't really comment on this. I know appearance isn't locked because in a blog they mentioned the difficulty of marketing a game without a defined character face. I'm thinking gender is locked, which for females is definitely a downside. I like to think this is down to keeping it historically accurate (as the game is based around real events), but I'm not so sure.

I agree that it takes away from the game if you play a character they created for you, that's one of the main reasons why I continue to play TES. You truly can be who you want.

Edit: I agree with Kiln. As much as character individuality adds to games. Some of the ideas they are discussing really make me want to play this. Enough to get over being set a character.

Posted by: Kiln Jan 24 2014, 01:38 AM

Yup, unfortunately females had basically no rights to do anything during the middle ages. There were female knights but it was very rare and they still basically had no say in anything.

The historical accuracy this game claims to have/aim for was one of the things that got me interested. I love medieval history and I think it would be a refreshing change.

I feel like this game is the game the devs want to play, but they also want to listen to fans, who for the most part will be like-minded. Still not gonna read too much into the hype, I watched the video and that's it. Just wanted to share this with you guys and see your thoughts.

Posted by: mirocu Jan 24 2014, 10:55 AM

According to the footage it really looks awesome and at this point I only have one question: WILL IT REQUIRE STEAM!????

Posted by: jack cloudy Jan 24 2014, 11:18 AM

Ok, mark me up for very interested. But without a credit-card I can't pledge so I'll just have to keep an eye out and see how it turns out.

Regarding customization: From what they describe the background is fixed, but where you go from there is more open. Regardless, if the combat system is as awesome as it looks in the trailer without being a major chore to achieve minimal proficiency or a glorified qte, I can manage limited customization. Oh, and if the pc can grow an epic beard/moustache, I can definitely manage.

The pledge bonuses mention a boxed copy but as we've seen lately, boxed anything does not mean Steam-free. Watch and wait on that end I guess.

Posted by: Vital Jan 24 2014, 11:40 AM

Not sure if it will require steam. I'm sure lots more info will come out in a few days. They achieved their initial kickstarter goal in 36 hrs, which is all they need to get the funding from their investor(s). It's also set for consoles, so I don't know if that would affect if it's on steam (I only use consoles sad.gif ).

I just love the look of all those extra features: Various layers of clothing/armour makes it much easier to for the character to look unique, the survival aspects appeal to me, the combat system and the variety of weapons and the different benefits/downsides that come with each weapon add more layers to combat, and make your skill choices matter.

Posted by: mirocu Jan 24 2014, 11:53 AM

It sounds like the MQ isn´t forced upon me, or did I miss something?

Posted by: Vital Jan 24 2014, 12:29 PM

No the MQ will wait for you/can be avoided.

One thing I've heard is that the game is being made in three 'chapters' that will be released about 9 months between each other. Each one will be about 20-30 dollars, so it works out roughly same as a normal game. Again this is most likely due to the skepticism of publishers.

Also the focus is quality over quantity, with the idea being a few unique, large dungeons is better than more small, generic ones. It's set in medieval europe so I can't imagine many ruins like those in TES games. Still I would love to spend my time hunting and bounty hunting in those forests...

Posted by: Vital Jan 25 2014, 08:23 AM

Quick update for all female gamers:

One of their stretch goals for the kickstarter (they have already reached the target for the game to be made) involves female characters. Not sure in what shape or form this will be introduced but it's been mentioned...

Posted by: jack cloudy Feb 14 2014, 08:31 PM

So I just found out they've got a youtube place with more videos.
http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIqUdfkbYmCGM-YRmk28zCg/feed

I'm looking through it now and is it bad that I literally cheered over the horse animations? I don't know why, but I just loved how it bent its head into the direction it turned when walking.

Edit: Ok, watch the first video. Seriously. They talk about how they used real world locales to build their own and it is very interesting stuff to see.

I watched several (pre?) alpha tryouts of this game a month or two ago. It looks very promising! Was impressed with the combat. For once it seemed quite realistic, at least compared to other medieval warfare based games. Lots of other potential goodness too. I'll be keeping my eye on it.

The most recent post on this thread being relatively old, ya might want to search YouTube for the latest videos on the game.

Posted by: Renee Sep 20 2015, 03:49 AM

It sounds neat. But as SubRosa says, if we can't create our own character, that's a tough sell for me at this point. I do want to see some vids of this game though.

Okay, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0sK7Xqfvpc. Wow, it looks fantastic. Cripes. I want it.

They don't allow a pre-created female? sad.gif

Seeing real longswording in a game is wonderful. I wish the Elder Scrolls games would do this.

Posted by: mALX Sep 20 2015, 05:38 AM

That was Awesome! Yes, that would be worth doing 1st person combat instead of 3rd person for sure! The E3 trailer was amazing; talk about immersion!

Even if it doesn't make money, it's hard to ignore how stunning that looks. I believe this sort of gameplay will become sort of a standard. Not that Elder Scrolls will copy Kingdom Come exactly, but you know what I mean... I'm having trouble articulating it.

I am just thinking how historically, sometimes somebody will provide something which is technologically-advanced (or whatever), yet whoever comes up with that idea might not make any money off of it, for whatever reason. Like for instance recently I learned that a lot of the original companies who provided broadband, streaming video, fiber-optic networks (etc.) laid all of this out in late '90s into the new millenium, and some of these companies didn't stay in business, did not make a profit, or whatever, despite the fact that all this stuff is now regularly used today.

It's the same thing, really. Even if KC: D doesn't go anywhere, assuming they're the only one who's that advanced with their combat / visuals, it's hard for other studios to see that and not think "that'll go nowhere". Then again, I have no idea what other studios are up to, because I rarely look at vids for other games. *whistles*

Right now that company is looking for investors just to make the game in the first place, it is the perfect timing for someone like Bethesda to step in with funding and negotiate for a percentage of ownership in it.

Thanks for the update, Decrepit. It looks great. I'm ever so encouraged any time I see some competition for TES to help keep Bethesda off their laurels. The graphics look wonderful and some of the ideas and mechanics are encouraging.

It looks like it may certainly have the 'medieval' part down well - and that is its objective. I do go exclusively for 'medieval fantasy' though so I needs the elves and magicks and such. tongue.gif And like SubRosa, can no longer go for a game that issues me a character instead of letting me create my own.

These sentiments mirror my own, except that as both a lover of fantasy and a history buff I'm perfectly okay with a medieval RPG that sticks to supposed reality and foregoes such things as magic and 'exotic' races. But yeah, being forced to play as a pre-defined character with little or no customization is a huge deterrent, possibly a lease breaker. Were I to some day buy KCD it will be with the understanding that it is a different sort of game than TES and not a direct competitor/alternative. The whole thing is sort of beside the point for me in any case. My primary computer approaches the six year mark. I can't see it having the horsepower to run KCD with sufficient graphics detail to satisfy me, if at all. Nor do I expect to have enough disposable 'luxury' money to assemble a new rig until next year at the earliest.

Posted by: Renee Mar 14 2016, 11:11 PM

I'm pretty excited for this game. As much as I love Elder Scrolls, it would be cool to try something closer to Earth. I like how they're spending a lot of time making this game. The anticipation builds.

Made another of my infrequent searches for new Kingdom Come: Deliverance info at YouTube. Couple of items of interest...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlK3MURumeE. Lots of emphasis on the armor system, which is shaping up to be very nice indeed. Also talk of RPG and survival elements.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Cn70tmCoXo. No narration, but some interesting footage. Emphasis on combat.

Posted by: Cain Sep 29 2016, 01:16 PM

I saw a video for this on YouTube over the summer, and it looks really really cool. Hopefully it doesn't go the route of No Man's Sky... wink.gif

Posted by: Renee Sep 29 2016, 11:12 PM

Oooh I missed the vids Decrepit posted until now. Wow, they really put an emphasis on combat moves. I wonder if it's only first-person game? I don't mind if it is, just wondering though.

I just read about No Man's Sky, it does sound like a mess. It mostly seems to be the online stuff which is glitchy though. Deliverance won't be online, will it?

I noticed a lot of their gameplay vids were in 1st person (with a very awkwardly placed left hand in camera view) and wondered if they were playing first person by choice or if there was no 3rd person going to be available.

Like Acadlan; I am not a big fan of games that create my character and storyline (and personality) for me (aka "Witcher," which also offers excellent graphics).

That said, I found it extremely interesting how they tested the armor and weapons for realism!

Seriously, I would like to give this game a free trial; but don't see me spending the same or more as I would for a finished game from a known studio like Bethesda just to be given the opportunity to beta test their game for them.

I noticed when they went Beta that they told a large group of their "kick-starter" investors (On film) that what they have donated (although they admit it was well over their goal for publishing the game) was not enough to beta-test for them; so if they want an unfinished copy of the game to test for them that the investor needs to give an additional 59.95 US Dollars (which is the cost of most finished games on launch).

I have always been leery of anyone in the "Kick-starters" site (not just because of all the scammers on that site) - but because; even the legit ones are a very risky "investment" that is very likely to never see a return. May as well call it a donation; and it isn't even a tax deductible one.

Big companies like Microsoft; Sony; gaming companies; etc - they are the ones these upcoming game developers should be turning to in order to fund their projects. If these small game developers can't get funding through a major company who is in the business of funding and distributing games; and has to turn to individual donations - something isn't right about what they are projecting.

Like Decrepit; I suspect in this case, those fantastic graphics they are showing in the previews would use a whopping amount of power that the average computer player may not have access to. If they can't make it for the masses, then it won't sell enough to cover the investments in it, and may never make it off the ground.

And between the cost of distribution; real advertising (not Facebook) they may never make enough sales to recover what they put into this. That, and without a real backer I doubt all those kick-starter investors who will be expecting a finished/polished game in return for their support are going to get one. What I saw in those gameplay vids was very rough, they still have a long way to go to perfect that game.

Posted by: Renee Sep 30 2016, 07:51 PM

Dang. Well that sucks if it's true, mALX. Hmm. I think maybe they avoid turning to big-money investors because those are the sort of investors who will tell the smaller kick-starters what they can and cannot do, if Big Money gets involved? Know what I mean? They try to stay as independent as possible, to retain their freedom of artistry (whatever). I don't know. I don't know much about how it all works.

I do know what you mean about pre-written stories & pre-made characters though. I've never played Witcher, but I used to play a lot of Tomb Raider. Although I could go back to totally linear / pre-written storylines for the nostalgia & guaranteed action, Bethesda has definitely spoiled me!

Posted by: Decrepit Dec 9 2016, 02:23 PM

Another update, this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyWqCew1g-A. Now sure I'll ever acquire this title, but I certainly admire much about it. (Even should I have a change of heart/wallet, I highly suspect my current PC is nowhere near powerful enough to do it justice.) What would be neat is for Beth to coordinate with these guys when it comes time to develop TES:VI. If nothing else I'd love to see Elder Scrolls titles with quality realistic melee combat, or as realistic as is possible considering that a Nirn warrior has to deal with such things as ghosts and ogres in addition to the humanoid opponents a Kingdom Come combatant expects to battle. I also like the layered clothing Kingdom Come implements, as seen in earlier videos. (Padding under armor and so on.) I've long wondered why no modder has thought to add this to Oblivion. (Yes, I know there is at least one "undies underneath" mod, but as I recall it's not geared toward realism as the Kingdom Come clothing system is.)

Posted by: mALX Dec 9 2016, 02:33 PM

I'd say all that optimization they are having to do is going to take it from the Awesome game it looks like now to losing all the great look, feel of visuals; and inter-actives will be turned to statics, etc. verysad.gif

This is in Fallout 4. In that game armor comes in two layers. There is a base layer which is usually a single item that comprises pants, shoes, and shirt. Then over that there is an armor layer, which has separate pieces for each arm, each leg, head, and chest. So you can wear a post office uniform, and leather armor on one arm, metal on the other, etc...

Yes that is true, Fallout 4 has layered clothes, which means the next Elder Scrolls will probably have them as well.

I wonder which game will come out first though: Kingdom Come, or whatever Beth has been working on?

Beth continues to swear that TESVI is not yet in development and that we should not expect another TES release any time soon . . . assuming I've not missed recent announcements to the contrary.

Posted by: Renee Dec 10 2016, 03:02 PM

Correct. Beth is supposed to be working on two new games "the size of an Elder Scrolls or Fallout game", or some such. Speculation is running heck-wild in the forums, of course.

Posted by: Decrepit May 9 2017, 01:40 AM

Watched the first two episodes (so far) of a recently begun Kingdom Come: Deliverance LP. The Beta this fellow plays looked to be a bit more advanced than that used in the last such LP episodes I watched (some time ago). Here's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcCuoR6fZEg, though I find ep.2 more interesting overall.

Man, I swear http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozX1-ojzq1M&t=315s look so good at 1080p full-screen that, if I didn't know it was a game capture beforehand, I might well have assumed I was watching on-location medieval movie footage. (The near-field leaves at screen-right give it away a bit, but even those are quite well done.)

Posted by: Renee Nov 24 2017, 05:04 PM

Some guy over in the new forums was ragging on KC: D, saying how clunky and unrealistic it is. Whatever though. I still wanna try it on release. Something different, anyway.

It is looking much better than it did last year when they attempted to tone down the graphics to meet the average computer abilities. I love how they put in contingencies and different outcomes for each = one of the things I loved so much about New Vegas and enjoyed the few instances in Oblivion was how you could change certain outcomes with your choices.

tbh I heard about this game for the wrong reasons a few years back and not to be a party pooper but judging from the red flags in the Kickstarter I'll be very surprised if the game ends up being good at all.

That said the crafting and some of the deeper mechanics (that can, admittedly, easily fall into the tedious category) did catch my interest, but then the only reason I play these swords bullshit games is for the magic so lmao I'm probably going to pass

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lhr1ulxd_og, a newly posted video (as of 6 Nov 2017) from Warhorse Studio.

I'm still undecided about buying the game. There are a number of things I like about it very much. Yet it is, in some ways, not the sort of game I'm drawn too. (As a lover of history every bit as much as fantasy, its lack of magic doesn't bother me in the least.) I think much might depend o price for the PC version, and to what extent ongoing proposed changes to taxation and social safety nets might reduce my available "luxury fund."

Posted by: Cain Dec 7 2017, 02:23 PM

I remember being wowed by the graphics when I watched a video of it in Alpha (a year or two ago?) but I'll be surprised if my PC can run it.

Whoa....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mws21WRRNaM, with a neat Warhorse Studios video running in the background I've not seen before. Boy is it looking good. This game is SO tempting, though by its very nature it lacks some elements I normally insist on in an RPG. But there is so much I do like about it. Lots of stuff the Elder Scrolls series needs to mimic. Stunning graphics too, at least on PC if one has the system to handle it at max settings. I'm still undecided, but might make it a b-day present to myself.

Well... I don't know if that's going to happen by this point. Bethesda's way on their own path. I highly doubt they'll ever go back in the direction of (let's say) timed quests and stunning consequences. Full stats, and the like.

Wow! KC: D is coming out next month??? Very cool. This is good because Elder Scrolls VI is nowhere near in the future; everyone's saying Beth is working on Starfield next, which is some sort of outer space game. And then after Starfield there is some other game. Not ES6 though.

But uh oh... we only get to play as a man? We don't get to make our own character?? sad.gif I have no prob playing as a male, but I want those other options. Damn. Damn! I have to watch her video again. Maybe I got this info wrong. Edit: Nope, "we don't get to play as a woman, we only get to play as Henry." Damn. I don't even care that there's no magic! I'm spoiled by Beth giving us the options to make who we want. sad.gif

It does look incredible though. Cripes, the details in this game. Look at how the foliage gets pushed aside, for instance, as he walks through it.

Yeah, Khajiit is iffy about this game. This one is waiting for reviews to come out before deciding to check it out.

Yeah. Not being able to customize facial and maybe body features is a downer, and could have been included even in a title such as this. On the other hand, the main character is pretty much defined as being a young man, which sort of rules out my preference for creating decrepit old farts. I'm hoping my PC with run it at max settings. Sort of hard to tell, as the Steam Store's age verification would let me scroll down far enough to enter my birth date. It goes off the bottom of the page, and won't let me move the window high enough to correct it. Hmmm...I just thought of something simple to fix that (I hope.) Why didn't I think of it before? Decrepitude, I reckon.

Well, I did it. Took the plunge. Bit the bullet. Ordered KCD off Steam last night just prior to retiring. It's bought and paid for, which I suppose makes the game no different than almost every member of the US Congress. I had pretty much already made up my mind to buy it eventually. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qE8tyEf22yI.

My biggest fear play wise concerns one of the features that most interests and excites me, the game's in depth combat system. My concern is that at this stage of life my mind and reflexes might not be up to the challenge of learning the various moves and being able to execute 'em fast enough to be effective in battle. We shall see. Worse come to worse I suppose I can apply for a position as village idiot in some out of the way hamlet.

Needed to expand my game partition to make room for it. How that partition got so full is beyond me. It's a fair large partition and I don't have all that many games installed. Thankfully Partition Master makes resizing and moving partitions a fairly painless process. (I took the addition space from my Productivity Programs partition, which had more room than I'll ever be able to fill.)

I am going to get it too, but I'll try to avoid Steam if I can (if it's possible). For some reason, I'm wanting to be a really stealthy character in this game. Sneaking around in the brush and trees looks like it'll be a heck of a lot of fun.

I did mention how much I like the way helmets with visors are implemented in the game???? Finally! I've been wanting this feature since I first began playing PC RPGs. For some years I've hoped someone would mod it into Oblivion. Though I play Oblivion in third person, I think it would be super neat if, as KCD does, visors stay up out of way until combat, then lower into place. Gads that would look impressive. I'd miss out on lowered visor restricted view (due to third person) but then again my avatar wears an open face helm, so its sort of beside the point.

Ya know, I don't think anyone's ever addressed this. So far as I can tell the game looks be be first person with automatic switch to third person for certain actions like conversing with NPCs. But that's pure speculation.

Though there is overlap, I'm gonna need to treat this game differently than an Elder Scrolls titles. Though the main difference as I see it between to two series is that with KCD the main character's face and body are not physically customizeable and he comes with a well established "history," that gives the KCD a VERY different feel. (Lack of magic isn't important to me in this case, and I love medieval history as much as fantasy.) Sure hope this all pans out and the game itself comes at least close to what we witness in the many Warhorse trailers and other videos.

Really looks Awesome, Decrepit! Congratulations on your purchase! I have to agree, that vid made me want to try it too! I don't like the character and backstory being chosen for you, (or playing a man) but the ability to roleplay in this game would be amazing if you could get around that! Did they give you a release date or say what the requirements were for your PC?

My questions (other than those above) = Will there be access to the Developer's console? And I wondered about what he said about wanting to ever return to a town after fighting with the guards = is there a limit to bad rep memory or will they never get over some mischief you get into? (I see a world of towns my Henry won't be allowed to enter, lol). Another question I can think of = they kept mentioning sleeping in your bed; do you have one? Do you have a home?

I may be interested in this game; but sure would like it if they gave you a buxom female character to play as an alternative, lol.

I am wondering if (and kind of get the feeling it will be) this game is kind of like Witcher; where the quests are laid out in a linear mold that the player has to follow up to the conclusions; and then their choice will determine the outcome?

In other words, will you be able to avoid the main questline (like the historical war that they depicted in this vid) or will it be thrust on you after some unseen trigger is passed? (like the dragon attacks in Skyrim).

I am def interested in this game, but not enough to buy it before the release. I think I might hold off a year till I hear Player's feedbacks and give WH time to fix all the new game glitches, etc.

I've no answer to these queries. From pure video observation and nothing else I gather that the main quest line goes (and possibly others) on whether you decide to participate or not. This is the sort of thing I like in a game, where the world goes about its business whether you choose to help it along or not. No idea what consequences this might hold for our avatars, but hope there are some. Seems as if some quests have time limits in the sense that they too go about their business and might resolve before you get around to it if you dawdle too long. This again I like very much.

I have long thought it would be neat if Oblivion could be modded for those who do NOT want to participate in the main quest line so that the game begins soon AFTER the Crisis the over. (Rather than before it starts as extant alternate start mods do.) There would be an NPC with the title of Champion of Cyrodiil our avatars would occasionally see walking to and from White Gold Tower to attend council meetings and traveling to different cities on official government business. Depending on which DLC we own, there might also be an NPC Divine Crusader traveling the realm righting wrongs. Our avatars would hear the populous praise the actions and accomplishments of these renown personages. All the while our avatars roam around Cyrodiil willy nilly as shiftless adventures who never settle down and make anything truly worthwhile of themselves. Or simply lead mundane ordinary lives as farmers or guards or what have you.

But as to CKD I can only speculate.

Posted by: Renee Feb 4 2018, 08:57 PM

From watching that lady's video, I remember she said something about Henry being able to do anything he wants: bad, good, thievery, chivalry. Game seems pretty open-ended to me. smile.gif

I have modded that into several of my games: the Oblivion Crisis is essentially over and done with. It's a lot of work and tricky, but doable. And there are others mods out there which eliminate all the "Champion" dialog which shows up, which really makes the whole situation more believable.

I am wondering how inventory works. I wonder if KC will allow a more realistic carry weight than ES games do.

It shames me to admit (but not a lot) that I'm so hooked on Mashinky right now I've put next to no time into KCD. Not three days prior to KCD's release I felt there was little left to be done on my current Mashinky map other than some fine tuning, so I'd be free and clear to jump aboard KCD at launch with no regrets. Then all of sudden I discovered a whole new field of interest in Mashinky that has kept me busy ever since. Too busy for pretty much any and everything else, KCD included. Thank goodness I wrote down all the controls I moved around...coz I've forgotten most of 'em. (The game has a LOT of controls.) In melee I'm gonna try something I've never done in games, utilize my mouse's two side buttons, one for Special Attacks, the other for Blocking. As Primary and Secondary attack use the two standard mouse buttons it seems logical to key the others close by. But will it work? We shall see. In a bow to Daggerfall I moved inventory to T5 and Character Sheet to T6, so those two at least are familiar. (Horse Menu is F7.)

How far are you along? I assume the game downloaded overnight so that you are able to play now?

OH I haven't bought it yet. It's on Steam? I'll get into it when I have a nice block of free time, no doubt. Maybe this weekend.

The 'extra buttons' thing might be a concern for me since I prefer controllers over mouse + keys. I can probably make my controller work for KC: D if the game doesn't support these, but still. Small concern there.

I expect I'll get hooked into KC: Deliverance for sure. It's not going to be a "forever" Thing since we can't make our own characters, but it really does look like a world unto itself, which is what we're all about nowadays.

Posted by: Decrepit Mar 14 2018, 03:02 AM

With patch 1.3.1 installed I began playing KCD in earnest. Haven't gotten far into the opening/tutorial. A surprisingly stumbling block...I can't for the life of me steer my avatar's horse. That means I'm stuck on the first "escape" sequence, fast horse travel being mandatory there. What gets me is that I have the controls set up very like what I use in Oblivion, where my avatar tends to spend a large portion of his active day in the saddle. No issues with Oblivion horse riding whatsoever. But KCD? It is so far totally beyond me. It's gotta be me, not the game. I've watched a number of YouTube KCD vids. No one else has the least bit of trouble controlling Henry's mount.

I also stink at combat. Surprisingly, I won the initial "fisticuffs" combat on my second try. Otherwise, forget it. At least with combat I expect to improve with practice...assuming I lick to riding dilemma enough to advance the game.

My only real gripe that isn't related to player incompetence is the save system, or rather lack thereof. Even with the newly added "save & exit" option in place, lack of "save anytime anywhere" means I rarely play more than five to ten minutes before needing to save & exit so I don't lose valuable progress. Two mods correct this. I'm a bit leery of them at the moment, with the game still being frequently patched. When the dust settles I'll install whichever is the better of the two.

I've encountered only one glitch thus far, no worse than the sort of visual silliness one encounters in Oblivion from time to time.

I'm no fan of cutscenes, though they have their uses (such as at the very end of the Oblivion Crisis...you know the one). That said, the many cutscenes during KCD's tutorial are so well done they don't much bother me.

Posted by: Renee Mar 14 2018, 01:50 PM

Wow, so we can mod the game, eh? That's good. I wonder if we can at least change Henry's name? I doubt they'll let us change his face, but at least if we can mod the name I'd be happy about that.

Sucks about your horse dilemma. Yeah, I wonder what that could be?

I suspect that combat simply takes some getting used to. After awhile you'll be good at it, as the buttons you need to push become second nature.

Yeah, Nexus already has a KCD section. Not a lot there yet, but some interesting stuff, along with the usual "cheaty" mods I've no interest in. There is, btw, already a mod that offers a few different Henry face options, though they appear to be presets that can't be manipulated.

As to the horse, my suspicion is that the keys combo needed to steer it during the escape sequence is subtly yet significantly different from what I normally use in other games featuring mounted travel. That combined with being introduced to riding in a life or death situation with absolutely no time to experiment with the controls is proving too much for me. Then again, I could be missing something obvious that when realized will magically solve my dilemma. Yeah, I'm not overly concerned about combat. There are plenty of chances to practice and improve, not all connected to life threatening situations.

One thing I like very much...if the lengthy tutorial is the norm rather than an exception Warhorse has kept its promise to provide multiple solutions to the majority of its quests. I've watched a good number of LP episodes from various YouTubers, just the beginning up through the horse-ride escape I'm having so much trouble with, and am thrilled with how many different ways even some seemingly inconsequential tasks can play out.

Woot, woot and woot again! smile.gif Henry did it!! biggrin.gif Made his escape and rode to what I assume will be a temporary sanctuary. He's been there long enough to get patched up, eat, sleep, have a most interesting talk with the castle's mistress, and now helps keep watch atop the castle battlements.

This session's initial riding attempts failed as miserably as did all previous attempts. A breakthrough of sorts came when I realized my fingers simply do no respond correctly when forced to keep W & R constantly pressed while periodically pressing A & D to steer. Those A & D fingers were spasming!!! I could not make 'em behave! Why this is so is beyond me, but there it is. My first thought was to move RUN ® elsewhere. But the few locations I thought made sense didn't pan out. Besides, R works out perfectly for foot travel, and is what I'm used to.

Then an idea came to me. Years ago, before I adapted to W S A D, I used Arrow Keys for movement. I left RUN at R, positioned my right hand atop the Arrows, and tried the escape. Success on my first attempt! Not a very graceful ride to be sure. But Henry got from point A to point B, which is all that matters. I did suffer one further SNAFU. During the run, Henry's horse must gallop most of the way. Only, it gets winded and needs to slow to a walk until recovered. Walk was easy, if scary. But for some reason I was unable to press R twice properly and resume gallop. Best I managed was a trot. That would have done Henry in pronto except he was close enough to safety for the chase conclusion cut scene to kick in ere he died.

Arrow Keys are not an ideal solution as they make mounted combat impossible. But hey, for now I'll take what I can get. As to not being able to resume gallop, I'm sure I'll work that out once able to practice riding under less stressful circumstances.

Posted by: Decrepit Mar 21 2018, 09:38 PM

I am at long last beyond KCD's rather lengthy opening tutorial. Been enjoyable so far, but I'm not as obsessed with KCD as I was with Oblivion during its initial (and second) play-through. To be fair, the same can be said of Skyrim. There were times I felt the tutorial too linear, though it allows a great deal of freedom within that linearity, offering variations on quest/task progression comfortably beyond Bethesda's norm. KCD has so far shined at story telling. The game's overall atmosphere has been top notch too. Beautiful graphics once I bumped settings up to a mixture of Very High and Ultra. No performance issues to speak of. Some graphical glitches to be sure, but so far nothing worse than what can be encountered during an Oblivion session.

Hmm...I'm just rambling here. The point is, I continue to play KCD and enjoy it.

Oddly, I didn't notice PC requirements listed on the official Warhorse website. I did find 'em elsewhere:

Minimum Requirements

Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
OS: OS 64-bit Windows 7 or 64-bit Windows 8 (8.1) [Windows 10 64-bit]
Processor: Intel CPU Core i5-2500K 3.3GHz, AMD CPU Phenom II X4 940
Memory: 8 GB RAM
Graphics: Nvidia GPU GeForce GTX 660, AMD GPU Radeon HD 7870
DirectX: Version 11
Storage: 40 GB available space
Sound Card: Integrated

Recommended Requirements

Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
OS: OS 64-bit Windows 7 or 64-bit Windows 8 (8.1) [Windows 10 64-bit]
Processor: Intel CPU Core i7 3770 3,4 GHz, AMD CPU AMD FX-8350 4 GHz
Memory: 16 GB RAM
Graphics: Nvidia GPU GeForce GTX 1060, AMD GPU Radeon RX 580
DirectX: Version 11
Storage: 40 GB available space
Sound Card: Creative SOUND BLASTER Zx

Not sure how accurate these are, but suspect they're fairly close. The game has been further optimized since release, so might work well on slightly less powerful PCs. Or not.

Though my version of Henry will likely not stray far from the strait and narrow, based on some of the "quests" he's been offered and what I've seen in some YouTube LP episodes, I'd guess that those who decide to indulge in less honorable activities will find much that pleases.

Favorite "Perk" my version of Henry will almost certainly never take: Manly Odour. "When dirty, you'll have 50% more Charisma when talking to women. However, people will smell you a mile off, reducing your Stealth skill by 30%."

It looks like I just make the minimal specs there. Damn. That's sad. My processor just makes the hurdle for "Recommended" and I've got 16 gigs of RAM, but my graphics card is GTX 760. Dang. I don't feel like upgrading anymore, you know?

Maybe I'll be okay with medium specs; that's probably where I'm at.

Posted by: Kane Mar 23 2018, 01:12 PM

I might meet the minimums, but never the recommended. I thought about adding another 8gb or RAM, but when I checked recently the price of mine had doubled.

I still haven't played enough KCD to give it an honest, accurate eval. I did come across https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRWN0Fv5B_Y. (Some if not all quest breaking bugs/glitches mentioned are purportedly fixed by recent patches.)

There are some minor spoilers within the video. Take care if you prefer to avoid that sort of thing.

Posted by: Decrepit Jun 26 2018, 10:09 PM

My already meager KCD reporting seems to have been abandoned altogether. Big bug-fix Patch 1.5 hit not terribly long ago. Just now Patch 1.6 went live which adds Hardcore Mode and yet more fixes. Here's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rq4qy8jB9q4.

I sometimes wish I hadn't gotten hooked on train / railroad games when I did. I think KCD is a super neat game but didn't play long enough to do it justice before catching the train bug. There's a lot to learn before mastering its controls. I didn't quite get there before moving on, especially combat which I was admittedly lousy at. If/when I resume play I definitely need to start afresh from the beginning.

QUOTE(mALX @ Feb 2 2018, 09:50 AM) *

You can avoid the main questline in Oblivion just by never going to either Kvatch or talking to Jauffre. Going to Kvatch triggers the Oblivion Crisis, whether you go to Jauffre or not. But going to Jauffre sets a lot in motion behind the scenes.

I generally carry the Amulet of Kings around with me and avoid the main quest till I am well over level 17 so that when I handle the Oblivion Crisis I end up getting the best Sigil stones.

In Skyrim you can avoid the main quest by never NEVER bringing that Bleak Falls Barrow Dragonstone back to the court mage in Whiterun. The dragons never spawn till you hand that over to him.

Both Acadian and I have lamented "always being the hero" in these games. How nice it would be if you were just a support to the hero in some way instead of always having to be the uber one. ESO is a lot better about keeping you as an assistant and not a god.

From the vids of these guys making this game, it was clear that they had an amazing talent and vision for this game; but were learning as they went along. They have the drive to get it right, and I'm sure will fix any flaws = but that is why I opted to stay out of it for the first year while they get the bugs out; and by the time they get it running smoothly I will pick it up, lol.

Same here, some of my stuff surpasses the recommended; but the important stuff like the graphics card doesn't come close at all. Mine is the Nvidia GPU GeForce GTX 780 Ti, so above the minimum; but closer to it than to the recommended.

It sure is a gorgeous game, and does look like a lot of fun! I really wish we could play a female character in it, that is one of the few things I really wasn't happy with.

It may be good that you got hooked on the other game while KCD works out the bugs though = keep you from too much frustration with the game. By the time you are ready to leave the railroad, the game might be cleared of the problems, lol.

To me, even with the problems I can see a lot I like in this game; and so far it looks like the good is outweighing the bad.

Lol @ "Manly Odour." laugh.gif

I like reading about this game, but for I'm holding off getting it (despite all my enthusiasm earlier). It's because I'd have to upgrade the heck out of my gaming PC just to get High settings, which I don't want to do because it works so flawlessly as-is. It'd be like I might as well buy another computer. sad.gif

Hmm. They do make this game for consoles though, and I am probably going to get a current-gen console at some point anyway. Hmm.

I've been reporting my ongoing KCD experiences elsewhere (our General Discussion forum), but want to chime in here to report that when I checked Steam this morning, 22 Nov 2018, the game is on sale for $35.99US. A good time for those on the fence about acquiring the game to take the plunge.

Posted by: Decrepit Nov 26 2018, 11:56 AM

Thought I'd finally experienced my first KCD quest-breaking glitch, if it can be called that. It occurred during last night's play session. Henry was on assignment to gather something within a restricted time span. That limit should have been more than sufficient to get the job done, barring the unexpected. The unexpected happened.

To reach required items, Henry needed to pass through a door. Only, said door was locked. The lock was set to Very Hard. Henry's lock-picking skill is at the moment "3." Far too low to even attempt Very Hard locks. I suppose he could have attempted to pickpocket guards until he found one with a key for that door, assume any do. But Henry follows the straight-and-narrow so wouldn't do something like that. At least not to friendly guards, which these are. Besides, his pick-pocket skill is "1," another auto fail. He looked around, hoping to find another means into the area housing needed object, until the timer expired. A Quest Failure message popped up. At that point I called it quits for the day and checked online to determine if I was experiencing a quest flaw or just simply overlooking something obvious.

What I found is that for almost everyone that door is not locked!!!! They just walk right in and grab said items. "Aha," I thought, "my first KCD quest flaw." I then noticed a comment to the effect that the "flaw" is caused by a guard on duty entering the area, then locking the door behind him when he leaves. I put two and two together. Launched the game first thing this morning. Loaded a save prior to quest failure. This time, instead of running all over the place looking for another means into said area, Henry waited patiently at the door. Sure enough, after some time had passed a guard on duty showed up to check the area. He unlocked the door and entered. Henry entered right behind him and was able to grab what he needed. (Recall that this is a friendly area. The guards have no problem with him being there, though what he's doing is rather unorthodox and likely against the rules.) He was able to complete the mission!

The moral of this tale is that I should have trusted KCD and Warhorse more than I did. The game is pretty darn good at providing multiple ways to solve things if only we players keep our wits about us.

(An aside. During research I noticed that, while almost no one experienced the locked door, some had problems with the quest phase immediately preceding it. For me that phase was a piece of cake. Didn't have a lick of trouble with it.)

Posted by: Decrepit Nov 28 2018, 02:32 PM

As mentioned in a different thread, one thing I like a lot about KCD is that, at long last, when wearing a visored helmet, soon as we engage in combat the visor drops in place. The screen then shows a somewhat realistic depiction of restricted vision until Henry sheaths his weapon at combat's end. I've been waiting for this for decades.

Now that it's at last here, I'm able to observe the trade-offs between added protection and limited vision at first hand, so to speak. To keep it simple, Henry now travels with TWO helms. For the most part he wears an open-face helm, especially when facing multiple opponents where increased field of view often proves more beneficial than added protection. When he sees what looks to be a heavily armed and armored single foe, or maybe two foes in certain environments, he'll don his visored helm and hope for the best.

I bring this up coz https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZkgFvyyjtg appeared in today's TY recommendations. Part of it is devoted to this very thing...visor or no visor in combat, pros and cons. What's said pretty much mirrors my in-game observances, heat issues aside.

Speaking of armor, I like that in KCD a well trained fully plated warrior and take a decent number of sword hits without suffering much if any bodily damage. Much depends on the quality and conditions of the armor involved of course, as well as the skill of the opponent(s). The armor itself takes damage, but up to a point Henry comes to relatively little harm. (Just beware of letting stamina drop too low. It can end quickly should that happen, plate or no plate.)

On the other hand, a well trained axe or hammer/mace wielder can do serious damage to plate and its wearer unless the player is on his toes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzwWPBuAWII praising the game. Yeah, you can find YT vids from those who, for whatever reason(s) dislike it. Since I'm not in that camp I'll leave it to others to search them out should they so choose.

Despite KCD coming out too late in (my) life for me to fully master its elaborate melee combat system its now my hands down favorite such system. Combat is very immersive. I often feel quite a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment when Henry survives his more daunting confrontations.

Random thought. While I dislike voiced avatars in the Elder Scrolls series I'm happy to say I find it highly appropriate and effective in KCD.

Two menu images of KCD Henry as he appeared at the end of this evening's play session:

Henry on foot.
IPB Image
Something I haven't mentioned before, those six circles at menu top. They're his "buffs," several more or less permanent, the rest situational. As is seen, STRENGTH, AGILITY and VITALITY are now maxed. Stats shown in blue are raised by buffs and/or skill perks. (Red stats are lowered by various means, such as damaged or dirty armor/clothing/weapons or having recently spent time in jail.) As to gear, not much has changed since my last captured menu images (posted in a different thread). Most obvious is a new over-jacket. I prefer the look of his former yellow over-jacket, but this one has better protection and durability. It is supposedly less charismatic, but that stat doesn't change when he switches between the two. He carries a visored helm for better protection but rarely uses it, preferring less restricted vision in most combat situations. He almost never uses a sword anymore, preferring his war hammer, which works better against plate armored foes (as in RL), though there are situations when wielding a sword would be advantageous. He owns slightly better pauldrons, but doesn't wear them due to slight clipping issues with the over-jacket at the shoulders.

Henry Mounted.
IPB Image
Nothing new here not mentioned above.

Tonight's adventures saw Henry complete the first KCD quest I found lacking in polish. Doing the quest was enjoyable, but at times I couldn't tell if I had properly fulfilled its various objectives, even when reporting back to the quest giver at its end. As with a great many KCD quests this one had multiple outcomes. I tried several and was wholly satisfied with neither. (We settled for one that is less laudatory for Henry but kinder to one of the NPCs involved.)

Henry tied up the quest too late in the day to make it all the back to Rattay (where the quest giver is). He stayed the night at one of two Sasau inns. There was time for one dice game before retiring. I quite like KCD's dice game with one caveat. In the course of play a variety of "lucky" dice sets can be acquired by various means. Henry as some point acquired a set so good he almost never lost, and often won after only a few throws. This took all the challenge and most of the fun from playing dice. He's now reverted to very mildly lucky set that restores challenge. He very nearly lost tonight's game, and likely would have had his opponent not been too aggressive one round and gone bust, losing that rounds points.

Saturday Morning ADDENDUM:
KCD is part of the Steam Winter Sale. It can now be had for $29.99US! Its DLC are also on sale. I ordered From the Ashes as an Xmas present to myself. At any rate now's a good time to take the plunge, especially for those with a PC capable of running the game with high visual quality settings enabled.

Excellent name for his horse!

Posted by: Decrepit Jan 3 2019, 04:42 PM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6A2VRswXXg. It contains one mild spoiler. Mild enough to not harm anyone's playing experience imo. It opens with Gopher finishing up at a Cuman camp cleared during the previous episode. Just past the seven minute mark he chances on the aftermath of a Guard vs Bandit confrontation, and battles surviving bandits. The last of these is well equipped with plate, shield and mace. Gopher wisely switches from long sword to war hammer and shield, and still has a hard time of it. Near episode end he tries his hand at mounted combat to comical effect that almost turns tragic before all is said and done. (I suspect that, like Oblivion, traveling super fast on horseback outpaces game A.I. at times so that NPCs behave oddly.) At any rate, it's a good show. smile.gif

QUOTE(SubRosa @ Dec 22 2018, 11:28 AM) *

Excellent name for his horse!

<nods> It is sold with that name. Well selected too. So far as I know it has the best Courage stat of any horse in the game, which comes in handy during ambushes and other confrontations. Excellent carry capacity too, though a few other horses beat it in that regard. Decent but not stellar stamina. Not the best speed, but I didn't want a super speedy mount as I think speed beyond a certain point is unrealistic. I'd have preferred a different coloring (Isn't the real Bucephalus supposed to be dark black?) but that's no lease breaking and it any case he's mostly hidden be coverings.

ADDENDUM:
DOH!!!!!! Almost forgot to mention that so far as I know this (3 Jan 2019) is the final day/morning of Steam's Winter Sale, for those interesting in KCD or any other Steam offering.

Edit: Never mind. Seems if this is going to be released, https://www.gamewatcher.com/news/2018-19-03-kingdom-come-deliverance-dlc-plans-everything-we-know#. Dangit.

I would give it a try too if I could play a female character for the full game. But since it is all sausage, they can keep their pork to themselves.

Posted by: mALX Jan 15 2019, 12:28 AM

Ditto. They really limited themselves by not giving a choice in gender. I just don't enjoy playing a male character at all; it really effects my overall enjoyment in the game, unfortunately. One day I might try KCD; but that is one of the things that has kept me from leaping on it.

Somebody over in the new forums told me "but back then, men did all the heroic stuff" or somesuch. "Only men could become heroes." And I responded with three words: Joan of Arc. tongue.gif

...plus, I think in everyday life, there certainly were ladies who participated in more outstanding ways here and there. They were simply not recognized for their efforts.

There have always been women in every culture and every time who stood out from the crush of misogyny and did incredible things. Things considered impossible for women to do. The Night Witches, Lyudmila Pavlichenko (Lady Death), and many other Russian women killed a crap ton of Nazis. One quarter of the SOE agents in WWII were women, such as Nancy Wake and Violette Szabo. Queen Tomyris killed Cyrus the Great (the founder of the Persian Empire). The Uppity Women books are filled with examples.

Keep in mind though, from what this says:

Due to cultural differences, it is impossible to just swap the character's gender and still call the game authentic, so Warhorse is instead releasing a short questline with Teresa as a main character.

We will not be able to play the entire game as Teresa. It is just a short questline that you can play her in. So they will not be getting any of my money.

Oh, you are kidding! Grrrrrr. That really chaps me, I don't understand why they didn't give us a choice to begin with! Exactly, I have no problem with Teresa as her name. Besides, if there is indeed a toolket being offered, wouldn't changing names be one of the easier things? Perhaps I'm just spoiled by Beth though.

I already knew about the short questline bit. I think more research needs to be done because from what I gathered, other gamers were making it sound like we could at least roam the entire game with her. I understand we won't be able to do quests (they probably refer to Henry specifically after all, just like a Rockstar game will refer to only one protagonist).

But if we're confined to doing just that one questline, without any roaming, then meh. sad.gif I am getting too interested in Elder Scrolls Online lately anyway.

That seems to be pretty typical in the Eastern European developers - CD Projeckt, the people who make the Stalker games, the Metro games, etc... I think the Mount and Blade people are the only ones in Eastern Europe who allow you to play a female character.

$34.79US for the base game and all DLC ain't bad at all. If you already have the base game, individual DLC, etc are also on sale.

BTW, I took advantage of the ongoing Steam Summer sale and bought A Woman's Lot DLC.

Erm... Khajiit is afraid to ask, but what does that DLC consist of?

If I understand this correctly, https://store.steampowered.com/app/379430/Kingdom_Come_Deliverance/ Those who choose to stick with it will pay $14.99, again assuming I'm right. Good opportunity to get your feet wet sans penalty. (Or see if your PC can do it justice.) Don't go in expecting a TES-like experience. Though there are of course similarities, KCD is its own thing.

Full modding functionality has at last been added to KCD. For now at least, it looks as if its creators have decided to rely on Nexus rather than Steam Workshop. Even official studio-made modding guides are housed there, or so I read. I've not visited Nexus to check this out. Certainly I'll make periodic visits there to keep an eye on things once the modding community has had time to establish itself.

Don't know when you played or how far you got in the game. As to the save system, it bugged me to no end too, at the start. Turns out to be not as big a deal as I thought. Plus, once you get good at alchemy you can crank out Savior Schnapps all day long and no worry about it. Worse come to worst, if you're on PC there's a mod that allows you to save pretty much wherever and whenever you want.

Warhorse Studio was good about attempting the correct glitches and stability issues. It almost never crashed on me my second go at it. Decidedly fewer crashes than your average TES title, in my case. That said, I quit when I did due to a crash, following hours of play during which I neglected many opportunities to save. Worse, I planned to do ONE final small thing, save and exit. That small thing turned out to be the only play-function that had almost always caused a crash in the past. Had I remembered, I could have avoided it, saved and exited as intended. I got so pissed at myself I decided to take a few days off before resuming play. Only...I managed to get hooked on Transport Fever during those 'few' days. Months later, when the KCD bug hit again, I quickly discovered I'd forgotten too much, including how to effectively fight. Didn't feel like re-learning it all at the time. Maybe I'll take it up again when my current TpF map because too stuttery to play. That might not be too far off.

I’ll probably get the itch to play it again at some point because it is an amazing game, but I just have extraordinarily thin patience and its a game that requires patience.
