DA2, while fun, lacks the amount of dialogue similar roleplaying games have.

I should state for the record that I've never actually played DA2. So I'm not qualified to comment on that game's dialogue problems (and it sounds like it does have them). I loved Dragon Age: Origins. It's in my top five or top ten list of all-time favorite games. But I heard such horrendous things about DA 2 that I never bought it.

I agree with you about players nowadays. I sometimes think I've been around video games and video game forums a little too long. With each installment of the Elder Scrolls series I've seen more and more players arrive from other genres. And it seems like over the years fewer and fewer people want to roleplay in roleplaying games. With the arrival of Skyrim I've been seeing people openly disparage the idea of roleplaying.

Maybe I'm just crotchety today because of the summer heat. But more and more I begin to think that the worst thing about video games is video game players. kvleft.gif

I shouldn't have to "roleplay" dialogue from NPC's, there should be dialogue there to play off of.

DA:O had lots. Skyrim had lots. Those are good games that give you lots to play off of. DA2, while fun, lacks the amount of dialogue similar roleplaying games have.

Also, unfortunately, most people that buy RPG's now days are people who just want to hack/slash their way through the story until they hit the end. Then they move on.

1.I agree.

2.With some RPGs that actually fits with the game and some people don't have the time.

Origins was also one of my favorite games of all time. DA2 was a major let down for me and almost everyone who loved Origins. It was much more linear with less customization.

Don't judge if people don't RP in RPGs,I mean the name Role Playing Game doesn't mean you HAVE to RP but you can.

We'll just have to agree to disagree. Like I said, do these people who don't roleplay in roleplaying games also not engage in strategy when they play a strategy game? Do these people buy a driving game and refuse to do any driving?

And as I said before, it's not just that these people don't roleplay. It's that they openly disparage players who do roleplay. None of this makes much sense to me. But if it makes sense to you, fine.

I'll drop the subject now.

The difference of course being that nobody buys a driving game to not drive because you can't complete it without driving and nobody buys strategy games to play without strategy because they can be very difficult. Roleplaying games are different because they only require you to assume the vague role of the character that you're playing. They don't require you to fully immerse yourself into it. They're played differently by different people and IMO that is part of their allure.

Roleplaying games are really the only genre that has such a vast number of options for players. You can rush the story and ignore side quests or you can fully delve into the character and in essence, become him.

In shooting games you're basically always forced to shoot your way through the story without experiencing it, the only exception I can think of is the Deus Ex series and the Metro series. In driving games if you don't drive then you don't advance. You can easily play through an entire roleplaying game without ever really feeling the role of the character.

I understand the love to immerse yourself in the game, I try to do this as well, it is what makes RPG's so enjoyable to me. People play these types of games different ways because they are open to be played in this way.

I agree with most of this.
