Chorrol.com _ Oblivion Mods _ Oblivion Running Through Steam

Posted by: ThatSkyrimGuy Jul 27 2013, 10:36 PM

Ok...first some background on my issue.

I have had Oblivion for years. Recently I decided to start playing it again. I loaded up my disc and for some reason my computer would not read it. I went through all sorts of troubleshooting, to no avail. So I forked over $14.99 to Steam and downloaded EVERYTHING that is Oblivion...the game and ALL available DLC. (A real bargain!). I was all set to return to Cyrodiil, but it was not to be. After extensive troubleshooting, the last option left was to completely remove all Oblivion related files (old and new) from my machine and reinstall the Steam version. SUCCESS! The game runs great now! But I no longer have all of the mods that I once cherished. I want them back!

So what I need from all you mod veterans is -
1) - Any "Must Have" mod recommendations
2) - Any special instructions for using them with Steam

I am assuming that I will put my new mods in c:/Program Files/Steam/SteamApps/Common/Oblivion/Data. My main concerns are all the Unofficial Patches and OBSE. Are they compatible with running the game through Steam?

Thanks,
TSG

Yes, you can use the UOP and OBSE with steam. I think there may be a different executable involved for OBSE, but it should be detailed in the readme. It was D2D, not Steam, that made OBSE break, as they changed the main .exe too much.

It may even be possible to disconnect Oblivion from Steam once it's installed. You're not going to get any more patches for the game, so that part of the "service" isn't relevant.

Don't you still have all the zips, 7z's and other archives for the mods you used before? I keep copies of those separate from the game just in case.

Otherwise, I'd recommend acting like you were starting as a newb, and only add mods to fix things you feel are broken, or missing. And mine, of course, for the extra quests!

Ghastley to the rescue! I was feeling badly about not being able to help. I'm afraid all I know of Steam is how to cook veggies with it. Not very helpful, I know. kvright.gif

Oh, very high on my important mods list are ones so you can camp in the wild. Portable Campsite is good for this. I augment it with Phinix Portable Tent for when it's raining.

Thanks ghastley. You are correct about OBSE, but it was a simple install. Regarding my mod archives, I was so frustrated after buying the game from Steam and then having it not work, that I deleted all of the original Oblivion stuff, including all of the mod archives as well. I wanted my machine to think Oblivion never existed. In retrospect, I should have saved the mod archives. Oh well...

So, I am doing as you said, starting over from scratch. No worries though. I have OBMM and BOSS both reinstalled and working great. It's just a matter of time before I have it back to the way it was...maybe even better!

I agree with those camping mods. I had them before. I find them essential for true immersion, especially since my main character tends to be Bosmer. wink.gif

I'd recommend using BAIN rather than OBMM where you can. OBMM has problems removing mods that overlap, and tends to take out the shared items. BAIN notices that things are still in use by other mods. I prefer taking control of the install myself, so the installer automation (scripted installs) in either is irrelevant to me.

You still need some of the OBMM tools to convert OMODs back into regular archives if it's the only way the mod is packaged, so don't throw it away!

AHA! So that is what happened to all my beds when I removed Vilja! Urk, I went through a lot of trouble removing every trace of Oblivion/OBSE/OBMM - reainstalled everything, blaming Vilja's BSA the whole time!

So here is an issue I'm having; All my old saves work just fine, but I am unable to start a new game = CTD every time I click on "New Game."

Anyone have any ideas on that?

I didn't realize this thread said "Running through Steam" - my Oblivion game does NOT run through Steam, so ignore the question. I'll post it in the proper place when I find it, lol.
