I donīt play New Vegas actually but I wanted to chip in regarding companions. There is one that seems to be very well made called Willow, Iīm sure many already know about her. If I did play NV I would definitely have that mod! smile.gif

Yes I've heard about Willow. Unfortunately I play on console so the usual companions do me fine. Although I have two companions called Cass and Veronica. The game only allows one companion, but there's this awesome glitch you can abuse to get more than one.

Having an all girl party does wonders for my RP!

I remember my first experience with Fallout new Vegas:

I created my character, and was dying to get to new Vegas. I remember I started heading p the road there, and eventually bumped into a small settlement with a deathclaw problem. I remember in Fo3, deathclaws weren't that hard to kill, so when the guy warned me not to continue following the road, I completely ignored him. I ended up deathclaw meat. 10 times laugh.gif

I went through the same thing! As I was desperate to get to New Vegas I used a stealth boy and sneaked past the Deathclaws on my first play through (after reloading after being brutally slain once, haha)

As I just posted in the FO3 thread, I appreciate the gun play in NV.

The multiple ammo types, more varied weapons, and more realistic performance of firearms in general is better portrayed in New Vegas.

As someone who has an extensive firearm collection and is an avid target shooter, I appreciate this part probably the most.

I also enjoyed the more subtle additions like new types of drugs with status and visual effects, a more in depth companion system, and the slew of more interesting perks.

Posted by: Colonel Mustard Feb 9 2013, 10:23 PM

I way, way preferred New Vegas' worldbuilding to Fallout 3's; it felt like a (reasonably) realistic envisioning of what a post-nuclear society would turn out to be like two hundred years or so after the bombs dropped. Entire nations have emerged, there are populated cities and towns that feel much more realistically sustained and it just feels real. That and the faction approval system makes your actions feel like they have much more impact. The DC Wasteland's worldbuilding, on the other hand, felt like it was, at most, 20 years after the war, and it didn't feel all that well thought out (looking at you, Little Lamplight).

I LOVE the gunplay. Eva (my Char) Is an avid 9mm user. She has Maria, which has good accuracy anyway; but the iron sight makes it a monster, especially with my gun skill where it is.

I also love the companion system. I love how much effort the devs put into them. I also love that Felicia Day is my companion tongue.gif

I agree 100% to this. FO3 was not 200 years after, if it was it would have been much more built up (I think).

Would have been the opposite way round; two hundred years after that, if nobody maintained the buildings, most of the Downtown area would at that point be a large area of undulating rocky hillocks where the structures had collapsed and become covered with vegetation and soil. The only built up areas would have been were people chose to live, and given that nuclear bombs had fallen by this point, most towns or cities would actually pop up in suburban/rural areas where it would have had the room to grow crops and raise livestock. The city itself would be stripped clean by scavengers and then would left to rot on account of having next to nothing to offer to survivors.

Wha?!!...Who?...Which one?... huh.gif ...

I luuuurve Felicia Day!!!... wub.gif ... laugh.gif ...

Aaaamywho...I did a huge amount with NV, just after the second DLC came out...But then I just stopped completely...I remember that many of my offensive stats were headed for 100...I took out the entire of the Deathclaw bunch in that quarry with a rocket-launcher biggrin.gif ...Oooh, that was sooo satisfying...

I'm wandering around in the power armour, I remember that too...I spent ages with that Veronica...I think she's the tops, after my all time fave companion - ED-E...I love him!!...

I think I'm living in that abandoned BOS bunker that you launch Dead Money from...The one with the chips that keep replenishing...

I've never been anywhere near the MQ of NV...And I'm pretty sure I've killed hundreds of Ceasar's Legion...My character - Arnaud - detests them with a passion...

Other than that, I can't remember much about NV other than I was completely obsessed with it for a goodly while, but when I stopped, I properly stopped...And other than one attempt to start again when I bought the last two DLCs, I've not been near it...

Shame really, I did enjoy the wandering...Espescially when I became as dangerous as the damned cazadors and deathclaws...

OOooh!!...I just remembered, Arnaud is implanted as far as he can go!!...I can't remember exactly, but I know the strength and regeneration ones for definite...Damn...I may have to go look in the morning... laugh.gif ...

I think I prefer FO3 overall...Just because it feels better...Like my preference for Oblivion over Skyrim...But NV was definately a fine game...I also prefer the way you get one perk per level-up in FO3 as opposed to the one every other in NV...That was a downer for me personally...

But, I was definately obsessed with NV for a time, so it couldn't have bothered me too much... biggrin.gif ...

Glad to know I'm not the only one. When I first met that character I was kind of like "meh" but after I learned who played her I liked her more. Strange but true.

I quite liked her when I first picked her up at that NCR trading post, but I think I probably fell in love with her the minute my character had to deal with a bunch of enemies (think it was a bunch of geckos, but can't remember off the top of my head) with Veronica by his side and she simply murderpunched her way through them while my courier could barely keep up. It was quite something.

I love it when a bunch of Fiends are giving me trouble. I can barely fight them off with my pistol.

Veronica charges in: BAM BAM BAM. Fiends no more. Veronica really is vital to a lightly armored gun user like Eva Bree. She's a great tank I found.

Agreed; she's an awesome foil for my own Courier who's generally enjoys blasting enemies away in a storm of ordnance, especially when fighting higher level melee enemies. She's able to tie them all up and give them a serious thrashing while Courier (the only package he's delivering is JUSTICE!!*) generally brought the pain with a machine gun or grenade launcher.

Ultimately, however, I had to let Veronica go. She got knocked out in a fight and my immediate reaction was an enraged roar of; "Nobody hurts my precious punching angel!" At that point, I sent her back to the Lucky 38, as I realised that things had just got wierd...

*Yeah, I thought up a tagline for him... tongue.gif

Veronica is definitely general awesomeness. What I like the most about her is the face that she doesn't waste bullets (I'm looking at you, Cass). Plus, Veronica with Pushy? DON'T GET ME STARTED! Haha.

Although i just slated her a second ago I do also love Cass. She's fun to travel with, plus her perk is awesome. As i've exploited the multiple companions glitch I get to travel with both Veronica and Cass, although I'm thinking about canging that up soon. Maybe replace Cass with Raul... not too sure yet.

I still haven't played NV yet! sad.gif Reading this thread makes me want to.

Posted by: Uleni Athram Feb 11 2013, 10:55 AM

What I liked more than anything in F:NV were the factions! Specifically, Caesar's Legion. Heeeeeelll yes! The comman Legionary wears football gear for protection, and they have rusty iron flatsticks they call 'machetes'. Their counterpparts in the NCR are soldiers who have REAL weapons and REAL armor.

And they're frikkin' terrified at the Legionaries.

Their culture is based around warfare and conquest, and their hierarchy is purely merit-based, so most of the guys upstairs actually earned it through fire, not by shady dealings or hereditary means. , look at the Centurion's armor. Bad. @ss.

Add what's much more cooler?

Its said that they took theirs from their fallen enemy. While their armor in-game is the same in regards to aesthetics, if you think about it, that means each and every Centurion's armor is different from his colleagues. Yaaaaah. Wrap your head around that one.

Plus, Lanius.

Simply Lanius.

And Joshua Graham.

Caesar's Legion was and is home to legendary bad@asses and that's the icing of the cake for me.

"Hail, Caesar! We who are about to die salute you!"

Posted by: McBadgere Feb 11 2013, 01:37 PM

*Sighs and shakes head sadly*... biggrin.gif ...

I've killed every single Legionairre that I've found in the wild...The only reason I haven't flattened their main camp is that the raft that takes you there has glitched...

I simply detest the Legion...Which is why, when they reproduced the armour for the Skyrim Legions I was utterly disgusted...

Ere!! Eva, how does it feel to be a person 'o' influence?... laugh.gif ...

Not gunna lie, feels pretty good! Especially now I'm not the only Fallout story on the forum. I started reading Mustards story yesterday; it's so amazing! I'm trying not to comment on it again until I've caught up, otherwise i'll end up writing comment after comment haha

EDIT: Oh dear, my spelling was simply atrocious.

Posted by: Colonel Mustard Feb 11 2013, 01:57 PM

I'm kinda torn about the Legion; onehand they're a bunch of complete badasses with a whole bunch of fun missions (I had this for my evil playthrough character) but on the other they're a bunch of knobheads. I generally preferred Mr House, myself, though that's because I'm a complete sucker for anything resembling style.

You're more of a BoS person, aren't you, McB? biggrin.gif I like those bucketheads myself, particulary the Midwestern Chapters. But without outside help, they're basically xenophobic technopiles that'll destroy themselves if they continue being what they are. One thing I dislike about them is because of that. Veronica and Lyons had the right idea.

And Colonel, what makes you call them knobheads?

Posted by: Eva Feb 11 2013, 02:12 PM

Eva never chose a fanction; not yet anyway. She gave house the chip to upgrade the securitrons, but since then she's just been wondering around with the girls doing the odd mission until she finds her way. Her main mission in life was to kill her shooter... after that she's not too sure.

However, he did work with Veronica to sort out the BoS...And get the power armour training... biggrin.gif ...

Oh, that. I thought it was something regarding battle-tactics! Well, that's the undeniable dark stain that clings to them, I suppose. Unredeemably despicable in its evil.

Still like their armor though.

Far enough on regarding that, I guess.

All things considered, their battle tactics are pretty damn effective (though I'm unsure as to the long-term stability of their society).

The armour is pretty damn cool, though.

Posted by: Uleni Athram Feb 11 2013, 02:45 PM

Aye, they're much more suited at taking rather tahn defending places. Lanius says so himself, and you'll find that the Legion has small territories at the Mojave. Much more smaller than the NCR's turf. As for the long-term, psssh. Even I'd have to agree that without Caesar, they'd degenerate back into the tribals they were.

The thing about the Legion, for me at least, is that while I don't like them very much at all as a group, I absolutely adore them as an idea; the whole idea of a militaristic pseudo-Romanic post-nuclear society made from conquered and repatriated tribes is a really cool one, and I love the vibe the Legion have going.

Yeah I feel similar. While I thought it was an interesting idea, their values and morals basically make siding with them akin to choosing "the dark side" in a star wars game.

There really is no gray area with the Legion. Everything can't possibly be seen as black and white without thought to the situation.

While the NCR definitely has problems and has it's troops stretched thin, at least they've got a long term plan in place and are trying to help people. The Legion seems to only want to subjugate without thought to what they'll do afterwards.

The worst thing about ressurrecting an ancient character is that you can't remember what the hell you did last...

The save that I went over yesterday morning, had last been used July 2011!...

Now, did I finish Honest Hearts and go straight home?..Or, and this is more likely, did I do some Raider Farming first?...'Cause, see, the thing is, I know that I'm barely a day away from what I did last, but none of the sales people have any money... sad.gif ...Even the Vendotron outside of Gun Runners...

I know that this game now has all the DLC packs post Honest Hearts/Dead Money (Gunrunners Arsenal, Caravan pack, tribal, OWB, LL) and I'm sure there's at least one update in there...I'm worried It's gone and glitched my moneybags characters... verysad.gif ...

It could be that it's just too soon and I need to wait, but to wait, I need to go farm... biggrin.gif ...You see the dilemma?... laugh.gif ...

Are Lonesome Road and Old World Blues good then?...I heard some disturbing stuff about having yer brain take out (again) in Old World Blues, but I've always been intrigued by it...So I may do that soon-ish, I was just wondering what everyone else thought...

Another trouble is...Dragonborn...That's coming wednesday...So, I'm getting commitment issues... biggrin.gif ...Can't start back into the Mojave until DB and Heathfire are out of the way!!... panic.gif ...

And then there's this writing thing which I'll need me time for somewhere...I know, I keep trying...Sorry about that... tongue.gif ...

Ah, the joys of being an adult and all its attendant ballsishness... kvleft.gif ...

biggrin.gif ...

The central conceit of Old World Blues does involve your brain being nicked, but I can tell you that it's probably the most fun DLC out of all them; Lonesome Road is probably the best, even if it's incredibly bleak, but in terms of pure fun it's hard to beat Old World Blues.

I hate to double-post, but I feel I ought to show this off; I am now officially one of those moddy types! How? Well, I downloaded the 'Special Weapons and Armour' mod off the New Vegas Nexus today (essentially a mod which sticks a cool suit of matt-black combat armour and a couple of submachine guns modelled off IRL MP5s in the Hidden Supply Cave). I'd also taken the Grunt perk for one of my character, a perk which comes with the Honest Hearts DLC, and gives a +25% damage bonus to 'military' weapons like assault rifles, service rifles, grenade launchers and that sort of thing. Seeing as the new 'naval submachine guns' I had added in would fit quite cosily, I decided to download the G.E.C.K program (essentially the Fallout construction set) and modified the Grunt perk to include the two new weapons. I'm feeling inordinately proud of myself because of that right now.

On a similar note to the other PC-based New Vegas players out there, what mods do you have on the go at the minute? Right now I've got Project Nevada (I can't really imagine playing NV without that nowadays), the Companion Sandbox Mode, Black Company Improved Perks, Bottle Water, one that gives ED-E the Light Step perk so its hover engines don't set of traps, Timescale adjuster which allows you to mess around with how long time passes and various weapon and armour addons.

Anyway, anybody got any other fun or interesting mods they use for NV?

Posted by: McBadgere Feb 15 2013, 02:02 PM

Sounds cool!!...Wish I had a PC that would handle stuff like that...Oh, and the time... tongue.gif ...

Aaamywho, I've realised how much I agree with Kiln about the guns...

I will admit to having no idea about the DPS/Damage ratio thing...Can't work it out for love nor money...Surely the higher the damage?...But if it's a machine gun is the high DPS/low Damage better?...And as for the 4X12.5 (just an example, you know what I mean) stuff?... blink.gif ...No idea...

However, the pull gun/shooting thing is just sooo satisfying...

Love me Ranger Sequoia...But I've found some new ones in the packs I bought that I may need to investigate...

Ka-blammo!!...(Technical term laugh.gif )...

Basically, the DPS is Damage Per Second, so how much damage a second of firing that weapon is going to do; the Dam value represents the damage caused by an individual hit, while DPS is the damage of a second of sustained firing/attacking. Weapons with low Dam value but high DPS, the rapid firing sort, are good against enemies with poor armour, as they can bring the hurt constantly but aren't as good agaisnt armoured enemies as the Damage Threshold they have will simply mean most of your shots bounce off; in that case, you want slower-firing weapons with a high Dam instead of a high DPS, as that individual Dam value is used to overcome the enemy's DT given to them by their armour. In short, if you want to fight raiders, pack an assault rifle or a machine gun. If you want to fight Brotherhood of Steel, bring an Anti-Materiel rifle.

And the 4X12.5 stuff is for weapons with spread; in that case, it fires four individual projectiles that spread out, and each one of those hits a target for 12.5 points of Dam, so if you get up close enough to mitigate the spread, the weapon will a pretty hefty 50 points of Dam.

Yeah what Mustard said.

The guys working on NV definitely had a better understanding of firearms than Bethsoft did.

All around the weapon handling is much deeper and different ammo types are important. In real life it is important to suit your ammunition to the intended purpose of the gun, they touched on this fairly well in New Vegas.

I liked how they made shotguns not particularly effective against armoured targets unless you used slug rounds (is it slug rounds? I can't remember off the top of my head) but absolutely lethal against everything else; when I'm playing a shooter or any game like it I'll almost always go for a shotgun, and while it was fun in Fallout 3 for the Lone Wanderer to blast his way through the Enclave with his trusty combat shotgun, it did feel kind of wierd for lead pellets to somehow manage to break through the reinforced power armour all the bad guys were sporting.

Also, New Vegas' Dragon's Breath shells are absurdly fun to load up a shotgun with.

Agreed on the buckshot. They're not effective at going through hard barriers or body armor. Slugs however are excellent at penetrating barriers and defeating most soft body armor.

I don't know how Dragon's Breath performs in real life (illegal for civilians as far as I know) but they're a lot of fun in NV.

So how do all you NV fans handle all the bugs? When FONV first came out, all I heard about it was that it was the most horrible bug-ridden disaster that has ever been perpetrated upon gamerhood. That is why I never had any interest in trying it. Did Obsidian ever decide to patch it and fix it? Or is there some unofficial patch floating around that fixes most of the issues and makes it actually playable?

To be honest, most of that was hyperbole; there were bugs, and some of them could be pretty bad, but calling it 'the most horrible bug-ridden disaster that has ever been perpetrated upon gameerhood' is also pretty far from the truth and was mainly the internet talking in its primary tongue of hyperbole there. They're all pretty much gone now; Obsidian were pretty quick to patch it up.

Yeah I disagree with Mustard here.

The bugs upon release were among the worst I've ever seen. One thing they have up on Bethsoft though is that they actually fixed them. The issues that plagued the game upon release have been taken care of with only a few minor glitches remaining. The game is very enjoyable now.

That is good to hear. I have been thinking of buying it, and what you describe is the only thing I had ever heard anyone say about it when it came out. I was hoping the worst of the issues would be fixed. Now I feel a lot better about buying the game.

I'd recommend it; probably my favourite RPG out there. If you do, the game of year is going pretty cheap, and seeing as it comes with about Ģ25/$35 worth of substantial DLC with it (every bit released by Obsidian, in fact) it's pretty damn good value for money.

My copy has crashed every now and again, mind, but so far it's been much more in the league of a minor annoyance rather than a complete deal breaker.

I have to agree with everything Colonel Mustard has said. The bugs really were minor I've found, and I've rarely come across any big ones; but the patch they did do fix them was spendid.

The DLC are incredible. It really is great value for money smile.gif

I've heard the GOTY version is very buggy though... huh.gif ...Something about framerate problems...

It may be worth getting an old vanilla version and then getting the DLC on top...Other than the PS3 freeze thing after a good couple of hours of playing...I've never really had a problem...And like I said eleswhere, I've not played it intensively since 2011, so the later updates may have cured all that...

In other news...

I wish they'd put the SKS in a Fallout game. There are just so many mod options for the SKS that it'd be a great weapon to include.

Plus it'd add to the short list of semi automatic rifles in Fallout.

Just thought I'd voice my love for the Gun Runner's Arsenal weapon pack. Adds a bunch of fun new stuff to play around with. In general I actually enjoyed all of the new weapons/armor from all the DLC but for the price of the GRA pack it is a pretty good deal that can give a breath of life to the game.

Oh and the interesting new ammo types, I forgot to mention that.

I especially like the timed grenades, mirv style mini nukes, explosive .50 cal, and the dragon's breath 12 guage ammo.

Posted by: Colonel Mustard Mar 3 2013, 02:58 PM

The Gun Runner's Arsenal gave me Pacencia. I dropped 17,000 caps on that weapon and it's worth every penny, and I loved that DLC for Pacencia alone.

And the 12-Gauge Dragon's Breath shells are absurd amounts of fun; after all, they combine two of my favourite things, fire and shotguns, so what's not to love?

Posted by: Kiln Jun 2 2013, 08:46 PM

I guess nobody else is still appreciating Fallout NV? Oh well.

I still play it occasionally but after investing somewhere around 350 hours or so into multiple characters, there just isn't anything to do but farm bad guys for caps, of which I have more than I could ever spend.

My favorite thing to do now is to go to Vault 3 with a stealth boy and lay down enough C4 to kill all of the fiends there at once and watch all of the body parts fly through the air while high off of Turbo.

New Vegas was a lot of fun but since there isn't going to be any more DLC and I've conquered everything the game has to offer, I've basically stopped playing it.

With my last character I collected every unique item in the game (weapons, armor, and misc items) and stashed them neatly in separate containers at the Lucky 38. I even used the Wiki with this one so I know for a fact I've hunted them all down.

Why? Canīt you run around and live your life like in Fallout 3, Oblivion and the likes? I ran out of really fun things to do in Fallout (exploring, that is) a long time ago but I still think itīs entertaining to run around, collecting ammo and caps until I have enough to buy the whole goddamn wasteland biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Well I usually sink several hundred hours into the game before I resort to the wiki. Basically when I go to the wiki to check for unique stuff I only actually have to find 2-3 things because I've scrounged nearly everything there is to find but missed a cave or building somewhere...or I just walked right by it and didn't notice. embarrased.gif

Ahhhh.... what I would have LOVED for some vehicles in the game tongue.gif I'm not sure about lore and stuff but I think the war left vehicles unusable, hence why there aren't any (I don't know)

Maybe Fallout 4 will give us some kind of vehicle option. Would be cool.

Posted by: Colonel Mustard Dec 2 2013, 06:35 PM

Either vehicles would be cool (all you'd need to do is hook up a fission battery to a motor or something to make it work*), or horses; wearing power armour and rocking a laser rifle on the back of a cyber-horse like the Man With No Name of the nightmarish future is too damn an idea to not happen. Plus you could play 'Wanted Dead or Alive' as background music and you would be a cowboy on a literal steel horse!!
