Chorrol.com _ Oblivion _ You know you've played to much Oblivion

Posted by: Fethenwen Apr 12 2006, 05:22 AM

Today I was running to job through the city with my hood drawn up, it was cold so that was normal.
But, then I thought, wow, this is exactly like being that thief character of mine from Oblivion! And music from Oblivion started to sound in my head....
Thank God there was no NPC's.. I mean people on the streets at that time in the morning.

when you dream of talking to deadra and fighting in the planes of Oblivion

Posted by: Frostblade10 Apr 12 2006, 06:03 AM

I was driving home from school and when i parked i was wondering why the space bar wasn't working and i wasn't dismounting.

When i was watching TV and thinking "hey that guy has a bumpmapping style the same as my orc's face."

I woke up and was so tired i was delerious and i wondered if i had a restore fatigue potion.

I put on my shoes which i thought were my boots of springheel jack and almost jumped to see how much higher i could get.

I was talking with my wife about my visiting mother-in-law and said to her that she hadn't raised her mother's disposition high enough yet.

I tried to pull the left trigger to block a soccer ball my son kicked at me and caught it in the groin instead.

When I try to barter my sandwich down to a dollar at safeway.

Posted by: ThePerson98 Apr 13 2006, 02:39 AM

When you think there are secret escape routes in prison cells.

When you stop and your face goes blank at random times, and you say to the person next to you afterwards, "Sorry, loading times are pretty bad, gotta upgrade"

When you wake up and your eyes aren't focused and you say "I wish this game had aniostrophic filtering.."

When you get in trouble by the cops and you yell "PLAYER DOT PAYFINE!"

You say lockpicking is a minigame of life.

When you sleep and then "level up"

You say working out is useless, as everyone else just gets stronger along with you.

When you go around literally wearing glass, for armor, thinking you are incredibly strong.

Someone picks something of yours up, and sets it back down, but you still call the police.

Posted by: DoomedOne Apr 13 2006, 03:52 AM

Good list, how about these

When talking to somebody you ask something they would never tell you, and they say something like, "pervert!" and you go, "wait wait wait, will you tell me for... 20 dollars?"

when you're playing a game and get tired so you go make a sandwich expecting to give yourself another 30 minutes of tireless play.

When you ask a bum where the best place to sell your stolen good would be at.

when you wear a cowl while doing something naughty then take it off as soon as a cop comes and walk away as though nothing happened.

after getting out the pool you wonder why you're all wet.

Real life women start looking really good.

With 360, you use the left bumper - if you're careful where you grasp the item, you can get it to lay down the way you want..... (EDIT: as I can see you already know from the discussion on the drag feature). Not a great method, but it's what we have...

I came here shortly before the release of OB and have really enjoyed the folks here so far!

When you are at the doctor for getting a disease and you just ask for a potion of cure disease

You can live your life without sleeping once, just waiting.

You never eat regularly, sometimes not at all.

When you think barney is a daedra.

You avoid crowds because of lag.

Its the weekend, you are going fishing. You are getting prepared. When you get to who you are going with they see you in a full suit of metal armor, and a claymore. Once you get there you get on the boat out into the middle of the lake, you pull out the claymore and dive into the water.

When you find yourself wondering why all the history books go on about this thing called "World War I" or "World War II"

When you wonder where the background music is whilst you're walking along.

When you pull out a map and try to fast travel to work/school.

Played Oblivion? I'm sorry, but I have no clue why you seem to think my life is a game.

Furious_George, I'm a USAF veteran and believe me, you can go on making those hand gestures and people will sometimes let you get ahead of them in line at the V.A. Clinic ... guess they don't want a 'crazy' person at their back. lol
=============================

I definitely know I've played too much Oblivion when I unlock the huge back storeroom at work and mistake it for a dark dungeon .... and start putting my arms up to ward off the liches, skeletons and goblins that are SURE to come surging out at me and catch me all unawares and unarmed.
I'd left my wizard staff back at my desk, leaning against the file cabinet.

hahahah!!!

When you constantly look behind your shoulder afraid that you will suddenly find a mountain lion nipping at your ankles.

When you start carrying a *insert vegetable of choice* on you at all times in case you need to set off a trap.

When you start thinking to hold "R" so you can swing the camera around on yourself and check if your hair looks alright...

I remember I was kind of tired once after playing MW straight for many many ours. I go into the kitchen to get a glass of water so I go to pick up the glass by pressing spacebar but to my dismay the spacebar wasn't working wacko.gif Took me a couple of seconds to work out reality doesn't have a spacebar.

You eagerally face any challange knowing that you can always load if you mess it up.

Ibis, they didn't even pay me for the rights to use my life and they've made loads of money for it... if only I'd had the imagination to realise that people would like playing my life as a game. I could've gotten out of these rotten Daedra killing jobs years ago. *Flails wildly at a Daedra* Must be off.

Something tells me, The Ascendant, that it was a plot of Sotha Sil's and Almalexia's to take all the glory that was yours and turn it into their own profit!!

Yes, and now they won't even let you make a simple mod from your own life without saying that they own all the rights to it ... terrible!

You dream in Oblivion? If you mean the drea world yes that is a good quest - but otherwise you would need mods. wink.gif

Posted by: Ibis May 15 2006, 02:47 AM

I started dreaming Morrowind dreams whilst playing Morrowind. So far, I haven't had any Oblivion dreams but still some Morrowind ones pop up now and then. My best MW dream was me, all dressed up in a sharp business suit and high heels with a briefcase, sitting down at the bottom of this huge office building where I apparently had a job interview in a few minutes. The building was alabaster white and built on tiers of steps with water fountains running down on both sides - very huge. you guessed it ... I was sitting at the bottom of the palace in Vivec. What my job was to be I don't know but I seemed ready for it.

When I woke up I told my hubby and he was jealous that I should have a job in Vivec. lolol

Well, it's resurrected anyway.

You know you've played to much Oblivion when you start calling the shrimp in your PE class a Wood Elf.

Or when you start calling somebody a Dunmer when they're pissed off at you.

Or when you go to school with a hood on saying you're a Battlemage (with a wooded pole in a makeshift sheath!), but then being forced to take them off.

When you start saying, "For the empire!" and trying to draw your sword when someone gets you pissed off.

I can go on for ever!

You know you've played too much oblivion when you kill some homeless beggar and your excuse to the police is you were trying to get the attention of the Dark Brotherhood.

When you give the checkout person at walmart 10 bucks to see if he'll let you buy everything for less.

When you get imprisoned you try and find that secret passage into the sewers.

You "save" and then go do something absolutely crazy until the police gun you down.

I'll make some more up later..

You know you've played to much Oblivion when you start calling everyone "Imperial" or "Redguard" (or "Breton" if you live in Britain).

Or if you do the Mages' Guild salute to a wussy (you're a wussy if you do magic ONLY, you're cool if you're a Battlemage or Spellsword).

Or if you demand 100 gold from someone in the halls (damn Highwaymen got me in that habit!).

Or if you start saying you're from Cyrodiil (if you're American), Hammerfell (if you're black), or from High Rock (if you're British).

Or if you call the swords the British used during the American Revolution "Longswords bought from Slash n' Smash if you downloaded Adonnay's mod".

Or if you start giving money to your cat, thinking he'll bring a warhammer down on your head laugh.gif !

I did that once. I said, "Hello, Khajiit... I mean, Abu!". Yes, one of my cats' names is Abu!

When you start calling some white place and Ayleid ruin, or Carac Agailor.

When you start asking for Mead instead of Coke or Pepsi!

When you correct your History teacher when she says that the British empire was the biggest and most powerful during the Revolutionary War. You say, "No, the Cyrodiilic empire is the biggest in the world! Well, on Tamriel, at least.".

When you ask your cat about the K'Sharra prophecy.

When you correct everyone when they say, "Armored pants", or "Armored shirts" (dumbasses, (in order) Greaves and Cuirasses).

When the teacher asks you a question, and you've been day dreaming about Oblivion, you say, "You kill the undead with a Silver, Magic, or Daedric weapon!".

When you start demanding gold pieces whenever your sister steals something from you, and putting the "Stolen goods" in a chest.

More coming up soon.

When you pick weeds and ask around for Sinderion.

When you hum the Oblivion title song subconsiosly.

When you walk around saying the word "Rumors" to random people in hope that you can find a side quest to do.

When you say, "Gwines got Mankar Camoren's Commentaries before me!", and the kid named Camoren says, "What do you want with me?" during "Free Read" in Language Arts.

When your excuse for beating up people is that s/he betrayed Sithis.

When you talk about Tamrielic history you learned from your Pocket Guide to the Empire in History.

When your excuse for bringing a blade to school is to defend yourself against Dremoras (I didn't bring a knife to school, by the way).

When you call the US and Europe Tamriel (but you call Scandinavia Atmora), and Asia Akavir.

When gay guys gallop around (oh, wait, don't they do that already?).

When someone assaults you, you run to someone and ask for the Imperial Watch.

When you write an ongoing story about the adventures of a Khajiit in your journal at school.

When you say you would never let a cat rape or do you (when someone says that one does) because of what you read in The Real Barenziah series (I believe volumes 2 and 3).

When you say an Imperial name when you have to name off all these guy names.

A Khajiit name, too (^) (huh huh...- (^)(^) )

When you mistakenly call Great Britain High Rock when playing Risk.

When you think they should make an Oblivion version of both Risk and Monopoly (I'd buy 'em!).

It means that I had to see what my math homework was!

Ok, now that I did that (a long time ago, I'm afraid), here's more:

When you glue things to the table thinking that they will hover 5 inches above the ground.

When you read the guide for fun.

When black people hate you because you say, "Imperials rule the continent!", and they ask, "What color are they?", and you say, "White! Oops!" for no apparent reason (they don't play any TES game).

When (counts for anyone buying a car, not me) you go to a car dealer, and you ask for a black horse.

When you go to abandoned houses, and you say you're looking for an ancient black door that makes weird sounds.

When you talk think about what you'll do in Cyrodiil after school.

I can't think of anything else.

when you go to a bar and ask for skooma

when you really think "life is a game

When you act like an assassin with your knife at dinner.

When you're studying Asia in school, and you mistakenly replace Asia with Akavir every time you put that word in your final project.

When you're studying WWII in History, and you talk about how Akaviri raiders tried to take over Tamriel in the first era.

When you start playing with your sister's horse dolls, and putting guys with swords on them and making them fight each other (killing the horses, the final death blow is when both horses are dead).

When you dream that you're your charactar on Oblivion.

When you're explaining to a dumbass why you like cats, you say that they sound cool and are good thieves and acrobats.

When you look for your quill at school, when you're really looking for your Eraser Mate and Hi-Polymer eraser.

When you ask one of your female cats if you can have a bed for the night, and give some cat food.

When you assosiate stuff in real life to Oblivion.

When you ask for Rat Ragu, with powdered deer panda bear (ask Weebum-Na in Leyawiin about said city)!

When you look for Nightshade to put in your arch-enemy's food at lunch when you're in school.

When you ask for the 1E 2980 series at your school library (or at any library).

When you mistakenly call your country's leader "Emporer" or "Empress", and your state's (if you live in the gool o' US of A) leader "King" or "Queen".

When you ask someone who they're courting, because there are different rumors.

When you ask yourself what your Intelligence attribute is at when you see your progress report.

When you start calling stuff in Monopoly stuff in Oblivion (like that one expensive place, the Krusty Crab in my sister's version, which you call Rosethorn Manor, or White Gold Tower).

When you go to el supermercado to buy parchment and quills instead of pens and paper.

Some other stuff.

Oh zing!!!

Posted by: Taillus Nov 24 2006, 05:21 PM

Hahaha nice Mallet!

You know you've played far too much Oblivion when:
-You stand on a manhole cover waiting for it to take you to another level of the Arcane University.
-You run into a table just to see how far the things on the top will fly.
-You go to the mall to buy a new coat but then ask the salesperson what enchantments it has.
-You run from an elderly man with a wooden cane in fear of him soultrapping you and sealing you into a black soul jem.
-When helping a friend move to a new apartment you tell everyone to wait a minute while you fortify your strength.
-You take an orange in one hand and a tomato in the other, smash them together in your palms in hopes that somehow you have a really good alchemy skill and some nice potion will come of it.
-You take a toy bow and arrow into your backyard to try the duplicate item bug with a twenty dollar bill.
-On a cloudy day you tell your friends "If I had a better video card and some ram then I could crank the draw distance up and be able to see down the road."
-You get robbed by a man in an Armani Suit that drives a Lamborghini Gallardo. (A la Bandits with Glass armor while you are still wearing steel.)

Sorry if any of these have been used before... I got on a roll and I didn't want to check all of these to see if they were used yet or not.

Posted by: Pisces Nov 25 2006, 01:57 AM

-You go into a clothing store and ask the sales person to barter and expect to see a simplified list of their goods
-You can't understand why they won't buy your copper ring.
-You buy a skirt, put it on and wonder why it isn't turning into pants because your a male.
-Pissed off, you try to sell the skirt back at a fraction of the price you bought it rather than getting a refund.
-You email bethseda to tell them that your skirt didn't turn into pants.
-You see a goth and note that its silly that no one notices he's a vampire despite his obviously pale skin and thin mouth.
-You wonder what quests are involved with the goth.

When out in public you walk up to someone and say "You..I've seen you" then say they're the one from your dreams.
When you think jumping off of your house many times will make your acrobatics increase thus making you jump higher.
When you're sitting there at a sports store looking at guns saying "You guys use mods for that!"
When you're afraid to go inside your grandparents' house being that you think it is an Oblivion gate.

A couple of them here.

- When you start speaking in one-word sentences like 'rumors' instead of 'Have you heard any rumors lately?' (Did that once, at th history class. While my teacher was talking about Napoleonic Wars, I raised up m hand and said 'Waterloo', expecting a detailed explanation on Waterloo battle.
- When you walk into cars in an attempt to turn them around.
- When you yell 'GUARDS!' when robbed, expecting for the Watch to run to your help.
- When you're afraid to travel by roads in fear of Ogrims attacking, and urge yourself to remove OOO mod.
- When you attempt to use Telekinesis to zoom stuff.
- When you try to get the difficulty slidder all the way to left when things are getting tough.
- When you attempt to find your 'unlimited inventory pocket'.
- When you try to enchant hoods with 'Damage Health' and get them on your greatest enemy's head by naming them 'A' and putting them on it, in hopes of removing him from existance.
- When you boast about your 'poisoned' apple, and attempt to feed it to a lizard in the hopes of proving it is super poisonous - not even an Argonian can withstand it!
- When you wonder where all the Orcs and Elves went, and why are Khajiiti and Argonians all so small.

Might think off some more later.

This is a true story. It was my freshman year and it was the day of the SATs. The truck we have is at least 13 or 14 years old and really rundown. My mom had locked the keys in the truck and my first thought was, "Dang, I wish I had some lockpicks with me."

Then I thought, "Well, nail filers are kinda the same thing." So I got one of my mom's long nail files and tried to unlock the door! And being that the truck was very old and on its last leg, it actually WORKED! Took a while, but it worked!

Pretty spiffy, right?

Also, a couple months ago when Hurricane Ike knocked our power out, I was laying down in my room and said, "Man, I wish I had that Starlight spell."

You know you've been playing too much Oblivion when you borrow someone else's car, and worry about getting a bounty as you drive away.

...You wait around for an hour, hoping the bruise on your shin will magically go away.

...You forget to eat because eating food is just something that's done to boost Alchemy a little bit.

...You think [cough]ing and [snort]ing are valid responses during conversations.

...You wonder why everyone around you speaks to one another for more than 30 seconds at a time.

...you are surprsised to learn that lakes and rivers aren't just filled with dangerous, carnivorous fish.

In fact she's working at fruits & vegetables but she has a lot of make-up so her face is very pale and she has short black hair just like Cutter. You notice your last usable portable urine bottle is filled to the half-way mark. You vow to order ten more off Amazon with one-day shipping after installing updates to the Unofficial Patches.

You sit at the keyboard. Your muscles begin to cramp. You realize it's been quite some time since your last break. You exit the game and stretch your legs, walking around the home. While doing so you notice a note on the mantle. It is signed by your significant other. In it, he / she states that he / she is leaving you for abandonment and alienation of affection. The note is dated a year and a half ago.

For me = I heard the music playing in the background of my dreams (because I had fallen asleep playing).

But the worst for me was Fallout 3; where I "saw" an empty "Nuka Cola" bottle in the parking lot of my son's school while driving him to school one day that he had missed the bus; thought the school maintenance man was carrying the "Burnmaster" (he was using a backpack style leaf blower); almost picked up a bottlecap I passed on the way in to sign my son in since he was late - and was tempted to crawl in and explore a sewer manhole cover.

I told my son he should "save" before entering his classroom (because they were having a test); so he could reload and have a do-over if he didn't do well.

(he didn't, and I actually had to pay 25.00 for him to retake the test; but when I first told him to "Save before going in," he nearly choked himself laughing, lol).

When you're sailing down https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southampton_Water on the Isle of Wight Ferry and imagine you're on the Niben. See this https://www.geovation.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Looking-up-Southampton-Water.jpg. (I got a very funny look from a non-player friend on the ferry when I told them I was looking out for a Strange Door. Had to abandon the explanation quickly...)

And indeed, that is the Great Forest to the west (well, the New Forest, actually, but it's kinda Great.) Southampton is not actually completely surrounded by water (it did have a big moat in medieval times, though and it still has a lot of the walls), but Winchester stands in for Bruma, and the land does slope up to the South Downs, so they're kind of the Jeralls (not a lot of snow though, even this time of year). Oh, and we do have a ruined abbey close to where Cadlew Chapel is.

And then it all starts to fall apart. There's a honking great oil refinery where Leyawiin should be and Winchester is actually the old Saxon capital, not Southampton. And it gets worse further afield. But maybe Anvil is Bristol, who knows? So far, not seen any Khajiits in Dorset, though Devon and Cornwall could easily be Bosmer country.

As for the Isle of Wight, well, old Tamriel maps do show an island in Topal Bay (which is the Solent, of course). Coastal erosion, we get a lot of it.

[And, yes, there we see the deadly effect of combining two obsessive pastimes...]

I can see the similarities, and actually made me wonder if Bethesda used it as a basis originally for their map. Very cool, and can see how great the connection would be to someone immersed in Cyrodiil !!!! Awesome!

I strongly suspect coincidence, I'm just doing that good old human pattern recognition thing. However, the whole Solent/Southampton Water complex is a bit special, not so much estuaries in fact, we're looking at post-glacial drowned river valleys (reas), maybe 10,000 years old or so, plus a weird double tide as a neat extra. Can't be many other places much like that on the whole planet.

Ah, tides. That explains how ships get up the Niben. The game is just showing us the place at low tide. In that case, the funny thing is that most sailings in real life used to depend on high tide (we have many more ocean terminals now, so not as necessary) except for Southampton with its double ones. It still used to have dock basins, though, just to increase the wharfage, but they didn't have lock gates, except for the dry dock. Those all host waterfront housing now.

And I've just got another one. Away to the east, from Portsmouth (no Tamriel equivalent) onwards into Sussex, the coast forms a series of marshy inlets with some surviving wetlands behind them. One of the few traditionally malarial areas in Britain, along with the Thames marshes, though the risk is very low (may be rising - global warming). So now I know where to look for my Argonians.

Increasingly looks like Morrowind is the Greater London Metropolitan Area (which includes chunks of surrounding counties). Better keep an eye on the http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/ministry-of-truth-london, lest it collapse and trigger a gigantic eruption up at Hampstead Heath...
