Recently i've been working on a novel thats been in development for two years. It's a psychological horror with touches of comedy and drama.

It's about a group of strangers that are called to a town to rid it from a hell queen that threatens earth.

It's alot of fun and I love it; so is there anythinh, literally ANYTHING that you're wirking on?

P.S I need constructive critisism so if anyone is willing to read individual chapters I would be eternally gratefull!! I've had great feedback frim friends/relatives but I would love a writers opinion smile.gif

also my book is as well as Lissa, not instead of. I'm eorking on.the consistently with each other. It's hard, but incredible smile.gif

Very nice. A work of the pyche with horror with sprinkles of comedic touches and drama... Sounds like madness to me! Brilliant madness, that is. I will assume that it is not based on Fallout or the Elder Scrolls, right?

I am working on a story based on the Elder Scrolls universe, about a troubled family living somewhere a bit distanced from Chorrol. About the Fighters Guild, sisterhood and werewolves. It took me some time to try and get the main protagonist right. I know few people that can pull off the tough woman with the dry sarcastic with and dark humor, but she's mostly that archetype.

Yes, my book is set outside the ES universe. It is mad, but it's also a very real and relatable story with the situations and characters. The characters really drive the story.

Your story sounds amazing! Yourprotagonist intreagues me. Definatly my kind of read!

Other than continuing Aravi's video thread, I have been working on a Skyrim mod that brings more life to the followers in the game. Right now, they are still considered following you when you tell them to stay somewhere. I want to try dismissing them from your service and have them live where you leave them. Dismissing them has lead to people disappearing randomly though. Needs more work.

Hey, thanks! Your story seems very interesting, I speak and all honesty.

King Coin. Nice name by the way. Creative. Your mod sounds clever too. I regretfully do not play on the PC. Can you link me to the Aravi video?

Certainly, http://chorrol.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=4925&st=620

That's the latest page. I do episodes ranging from 7 - 10 minutes generally. I have quite a few episodes posted, so if you are interested, I can send you a summary and you can just pick it up at the latest episode.

Posted by: Lycanthropic-Legend Jul 1 2012, 03:39 AM

A summary would be nice. But I will indeed keep a check on the other videos.

Working on a holy mother of a fan fiction about the Great War, named 'An Empire Falls' at the moment.

One of my main problems however is trying to condense the continent-spanning conflict to fewer characters. I feel I have too many viewpoints at the moment and keeping them all linked is difficult!

But then again, Game of Thrones has a pretty decent list so it could work out!

*Giggles inanely about the concept of free time*...

Anything I can claw back from the wee small hours of the morning are basically spent either playing *Insert game here* or writing my KOTN story...

If I don't get up early, I don't get anything done...Simples!... biggrin.gif ...

High maintainance family much?...Oh yes, I think so... indifferent.gif ...

Your story sounds very interesting! The description (and your profile name) reminds me of a mod I downloaded for Oblivion - "The Oblivion Werewolf Mod." It was AWESOME!

The player catches Lycanthropy disease and becomes a werewolf (after 3 nightmares and then when the moons are in a certain phase). If the player attacks someone while in werewolf form and doesn't kill them - that person becomes a werewolf follower. The player can go live in werewolf packs out in the wilderness if they want (there are several, usually up in the mountains or wooded areas) - and regular wolves no longer attack the player. I had a blast with the mod!

My two projects right now:

1. Both are mods I've been working on since last year (although they've been on hold since the new year). It is a village with three quests (all that is done) - what is taking so long is setting up voice dialogue for some of the NPC's in the village. I have all the voice files sorted and ready, just have to set it up. Also on that mod, I am trying to find some way to make an AI package for a drunk NPC that makes them sprawl in a chair (like the Jarls in Skyrim do) and hopefully snore loudly while sprawled. (as opposed to just raising their tankard up repeatedly and shrugging their shoulders like the current drunk AI package does).

2. The second mod is an academy for training assassins and mercenaries. It is built and all NPC's inside, but I'm having an issue with the AI not working as it should. ARGH !!

I kind of got distracted from working on them when Skyrim came out, and haven't had enough free time this year to do a [censored] thing.

I heard of the werewolf mod. I've came across a few videos about it on youtube and I debated if I would purchase the PC version or not. In the end, my computer was not enough to support the game nicely. The mod sounds amazing. I love the fact that the greatest things are often done by the fans and the community rather than the folks at Bethesda Studios.

Your mods for Skyrim sounds pretty cool too. I always wondered why drunkards in the game never acted much like drunkards. There was only one animation, if I recall correctly.

That werewolf mod was the most fun I had with any mod. Being able to infect others and spread the disease was Awesome! The Player was automatically welcome amongst other werewolves (but they would attack any follower that wasn't a werewolf) and hunted by werewolf hunters the mod added to the game.

The spontaneous turning into a werewolf - unless you closely followed the moon's cycles it would suddenly take you over without warning. You could be in town and be seen transforming (instantly NPC's try to kill you or flee screaming), it was a blast!

My PC isn't great either, I upgraded it as much as I could and it barely plays Oblivion at half graphics. If I want to actually play the game, I'm better off doing it on my 360. The PC is great for modding and screenshots, though. Being able to mod the game opened up a whole new world for me.

Agreed on the drunkards. I wanted one to stagger, sprawl when they sit, fall asleep in a chair and snore, etc. In the village, I wanted to have him go to the chapel for sermons and sprawl on one of the benches snoring loudly.

Right now they just stand (or sit) in one spot and tip up their tankard repeatedly in Oblivion. In Skyrim they shrug their shoulders as if some form of dance.

I noticed in Skyrim that if the Player sits on a Jarl's throne - the Player sprawls too, it must be a scripted AI to the chair itself (not the Jarl, which I originally thought) - I want to figure out how to do that in Oblivion and just make the drunk use that chair - that will solve one problem, lol.

I have been fiddling around with reworking Skyrim's racial powers. I have done a few already, and started doing more today.

I never use once a day powers, because I always either forget I have them, or I find myself saving them up for that moment I really need them. Of course I only realize when that moment is after it has already passed. So they are useless to me.

So what I am doing is replacing those once a day powers with either constant effects with lower magnitudes, or something completely different. For example, I took the High Elf power to increase their magicka regen and instead made it a constant 20% bonus to their magicka regeneration. I removed the Redguard Adrenaline Rush, and instead gave them a 50 point bonus to Stamina, and a constant 20% bonus to their stamina regeneration (basically a mirror of the High Elves, but with Stamina rather than Magicka). I did a similar thing with the Imperials, removing the Voice of the Emperor and giving them an extra 50 Health. I left them with the Imperial Luck power though.

I made the Bosmer Command Animal a lesser power, so they can use it any number of times a day, and extended the duration to 2 minutes. I also gave them a 20% extra damage to archery.

I am not sure about the other races yet. I'll probably give the Argonians their 100% poison resistance back. I might make the Orc's Berserk a spell so they can use it any number of times a day, but have it cost stamina or magicka. Or I might just remove it entirely and give them a permanent fortification to the one and two-handed damage they do. Or I might do that with the Nords.

This is a complete pipe-dream, but one thing I would love to do is either an animated web series or a webcomic based around Skyrim. Alas, while I have plenty of good ideas for jokes, I still lack the skills to make it a reality, so it's probably going to find life as a story at some point.

I'm ready to watch it already! I can't understand why Bethesda hasn't been tapping the animated angle for all their games - The Elder Scrolls Adventures - either for movies or syndicated to television.

My husband picked up wood carving, and he made some amazing little pieces with it! He made little statues of all our pets, and a few nice plaques with inset intricate details - really nice stuff.

Trying to piecemeal all of my fics into a one big gigantic all-star story revolving around the plot of Oblivion. I've been trying this since my last post in a long-dead story of mine, which is probably years ago, and I still haven't done a SINGLE chapter. A single chapter.

Honestly I can't seem to find the motivation and imagination to even write anymore. But I'm trying. And its safe to say that its kinda progressing.

Anyway, I'm in the middle of working on a short story that I'm planning to submit for publication; currently shaping up to be a sort of post-apocalyptic story involving the Viking pantheon and seidr (I can't be bothered to copy-paste the proper letter across from word) as its core narrative focus. It looks to be...interesting, at the moment.

Thanks for the pics Mirocu!

Amazing to see how other people live. Here in Melbourne we are only snowed in by people and a government who refuses to acknowledge that there is any problem. It now takes 30 minutes just to leave my suburb at 8am and another hour and a half to get half way to the city. Lucky that I start work at 6.30 am and avoid the hassle. Looks like you never have that problem.

Loved the snow pic. Wow! I would never see that much snow in 150 years of living in dry, old Australia. You simply must start playing Skyrim. Now!

UPDATE: We have decided to get the garage but instead of using it as a garage we´ll use it as a workshop, meaning that instead of paying 50.000 for a brand new one we pay 5.000 for an old one that´s still in good condition smile.gif

Now that's good ol' farmer trading!

I live in the 'burbs here, so I understand what Winter Wolf is talking about. But the other day I drove to my sister's house in Sycamore. Now Sycamore is a fair-sized town with no outlying suburbs, so you drive right from town into farm country. On the way in I saw a concrete stoop, complete with wrought iron railing, standing by itself in the yard of a farmhouse, with a FOR SALE sign on it.

What? What?

Then I knew I was really in the country here. This is not something you'd ever see in the 'burbs of Chicago. Reusing a perfectly good concrete stoop (complete with wrought iron railing) on another house. I applaud the idea! (insert Joker clap here)

There goes your new car's paint job? "POP" goes the tyre? "BAM" = "Oh no, there goes the oil pan...?"

But it looks so gorgeous! Maybe it needs driven over by a real crusher, but those will kill your kidneys.

In Florida (USA) they made the streets of coral, which is sharp as glass. I wonder how they smoothed it for cars and got it so compacted?

It (coral) must be tough material, because the streets in Florida never need repairs, always look beautiful.

An embarrassing tidbit of info: When I was writing "coral" above, I spelled it "Chorrol" and couldn't figure out why it showed red, rollinglaugh.gif

@ Mirocu - I love the color of the bricks, it looks gorgeous. How did you find so many clean bricks to lay such a long drive? Awesome!

So, another project report! smile.gif

I haven´t been talking about this one because frankly I have been rather -Jameson- about it, but now when it´s all said and done I feel I can disclose the details tongue.gif

Excavator - the dozer division

My ´cavator is a so-called XTV, meaning its tracks are extendable for better stability. This of course means the dozer part has to be extendable too and it is like http://static.mascus.com/image/product/large/d3e0075a/volvo-ec15b-xtv-minigravare,a33755a2.jpg, but the sprints that hold those parts were rusted shut and impossible to remove. I have hit them from underneath with a sledgehammer for months without result (I drove close to a pit I dug up to get room). I have used up five or six spraycans of WD-40 and another anti-rust agent that freezes the rust down to -40 C, still nothing.

Eventually I´d had enough, removed the whole carriage, flip it over, and went to town on those sprints again but from above this time (sort of). I used a much smaller hammer but lo and behold, they loosened up! ohmy.gif Two were easily removed but the other two demanded much more work, but I did it! I got them all and finally I can use the extensions!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I reckon so. We´re only doing the long sides and one is halfway there and the other coming strong. Another day or two and it´s done. We may have to get some more material however but not much.

I have a project of sorts that I hope to accomplish this week. My current military retiree ID expires at the end of the year, me turning 65 this coming January. I'll need a new ID showing me Medicare eligible. Research has shown that I can get the new ID beginning 90 days prior to my birthday. If my math is correct, Wednesday sees me within the 90-day mark.

The hassle is that the nearest issuing authority is several hours away. Neither my car nor myself are what we once were. The drive there and back will challenge both of us. Still, it's gotta get done. Better now than once cold weather sets in.

Speaking of projects, I washed and waxed the car!!!!!!! It can be argued that I waited ten years too late before waxing it, allowing much of its paint to peel off. But hey, I'm lazy. Better late than never?

I hire a guy I know to do that for me. Not the washing part, the waxing/polishing parts. He´s basically a professional and the darn car looks brand new when he´s had his hands on it! blink.gif

That might be a trip better made with a friend in a better working car to drive you there and to take the strain off you; be there if needed if the trip gets to be too much for you.

Around here they have agencies that will transport you to appointments at doctor's offices or the Social Security Administration (etc) if you have untrustworthy transportation and are elderly or infirmed in some way; (and usually when the destination is too far to afford a taxi to take you there and back, which it sounds like this place is).

We have the same situation here on the Veterans Affairs = 3-4 hour drive through some of the worst mountain roads imaginable, and if you are lucky you won't be crushed in a rock slide or your car go out of control on the steep grade and/or drive off the side of the Black Mountain. (they have "Runaway Truck" ramps all down that mountain for those huge semi trucks that go completely out of control on that steep a grade; and more than one semi was not able to stop by the end of that ramp).

Our boards lasted way longer than we thought. We won´t have to get more than a few new ones when we start putting up walls on the back of the garage. I say walls because we will leave a gap so we can easily walk into the garage without having to go around it every time.

Some have cracks and some have weird shapes and can´t be used, but the overwhelming majority is fine. They have been in storage for years and years and years and they´re only this good because they have been inside behind closed doors and with small wooden pieces separating one layer from another, allowing air everywhere.

We would have to move it all up to us anyway, might as well put them to use smile.gif

We don´t have enough boards to cover up the backside completely but we´re gonna use what we have and continue next year. We´ve had enough expenses for this year wacko.gif It amazed us though we did have enough for both longsides, none of use believed that.

(they have "Runaway Truck" ramps all down that mountain for those huge semi trucks that go completely out of control on that steep a grade; and more than one semi was not able to stop by the end of that ramp).
Sage advice. Had I my wits about me I might have followed it, at least to the point of seeing if such assistance is cheap and readily available. I suspect that before too many more years pass I'll be forced to rely on such assistance.

I made the trip yesterday. Left the house circa 0630. Was home before noon. I didn't dawdle at my destination, wanting to be home prior to expected rains with potential storms moving in later in the day. (Those didn't materialize excepting some insignificant rainfall overnight.) Am surprised by the low quality of my new ID photo. I had expected something more modernized than the 1992-issued black-and-photo which graced my old ID. Not only does the new photo remain black-and-white, but is so washed out it looks very like an old 19th century time-worn image, its subject rapidly fading into oblivion. Oh well, so long as it gets the job done I'm content.

The car performed like a champ. Me, I felt rather poorly but survived. (I feel much better today. Go figure.)

I'm glad to have gotten it out of the way, procrastinator that I tend to be.

Yeah, I´m really glad it got done before winter really sets in. We were lucky the carpenter just got a job cancelled and could start working at our place right away smile.gif

We don´t have enough boards to cover up the backside completely but we´re gonna use what we have and continue next year. We´ve had enough expenses for this year wacko.gif It amazed us though we did have enough for both longsides, none of use believed that.

Saved a lot of money with those boards still being usable! Awesome!

I've a project that has been postponed far too long . . . reorganizing my computer drives and partitions. They are a mess! It started soon after building my correct computer in 2010, worsened when I had to rebuild my C: partition following unrecoverable Windows corruption last year (and bought an SSD to use as my boot drive in the process), then worsened again this year when I bought another SSD to use as gaming partitions. Beyond partition G: I have little idea of what on those drives, and my partitions go up to W:!!!!! (I'm a long time fan of multiple partitions. But having so many defeats the purpose if you let them go to seed.)

I used to glory in this sort of thing, and not too many years ago might have gotten everything back in shape in a day or two. Nowadays my mind loses focus within minutes so that I have gotten very little done. What I have found thusfar is interesting. For instance, I found four (!) installs of Everquest 2 on as many partitions. The kicker here is that I stopped playing Everquest in 2009, the year before assembling my computer. I found two or three unneeded installs of Oblivion, backups so old they no longer serve a purpose. (I do have a very recent backup that will stay.) I found two redundant Minecraft save directories, which take up a LOT of space. (My most recent Minecraft saves are something like 500mb each!) And so on.

I've deleted most of those unneeded backup copies, but much much more needs to be done. One regrettable mistake has been made. So far as I can tell, while deleting some extra Minecraft game installation directories, I mistakingly deleted the only copy of my first Minecraft install, which contained my earliest screenshots, the only shots of the Hill Fort while its perimeter walls were still under construction. That hurts. Too, I seem to have messed up my Banished install. No biggy there. My saves or safe. I'll just reinstall it once things settle down.

Maybe you should copy the drive onto one external back-up drive before deleting it so you don't lose anything important again; but can still move forward on that clean-up of your hard drive - which most def sounds needed!

I have thought about getting an external harddrive for a long time but have yet to get around to it. I have the most crucial game stuff saved on two different flashdrives though.

I've got two external drives; one is just 400 gig; the other is a terabyte. They are as easy to use as a thumbdrive, and really don't cost much anymore. Well worth it for the sense of peace knowing I won't lose my data again.

Yes, of course you need to be able to access without walking around to the back, and the airflow will keep everything fresh in there; but out of the rain or snow pouring down on them.

My birds loved this over any other bird treat I got them, even the honey-seed treats! I used to drive over 30 miles to buy it fresh for them; hand picked the best/fattest stalks of it; and kept it in the refrigerator tray in a plastic baggie so it stayed fresh till the day I gave it to them to eat, lol.

I started working on Anchorage Reloaded, a mod that will allow you to revisit (or pre-visit) Anchorage. I was inspired by the Return To Anchorage mod, which was nice, but left a lot to be desired. My goal is to allow the player to travel to Anchorage in current day Fallout time. It is not a sim, so won't have any of the simulation/FPS mechanics like derezzing bodies, health stations, and so on. It will be just like visiting any other part of the Wasteland. The entire thing is completely separate from Operation Anchorage, so you can do it and Anchorage Reloaded in any order, without one affecting the other.

I made a separate world space(s) and cells already. Copying the old ones and renaming them was easy. The hard part is that it broke all the door links between cells. I have been recreating those to put things back together. I have also been removing all the Operation Anchorage quest-related stuff, like activators that set quest events, x-marker headings, and so forth. The same with the simulation ammo, health, and weapon dispensers, etc...

So far it is taking a long time. But I did create a vertibird on the deck of Rivet City to transport the player to Anchorage, and another to take them back. I copied the elevator button from the Washington Monument and stuck it into the side of each vertibird to act as a door between the locations. It looks a little odd, but works perfectly. Now I can take a characters back and forth to test.

Once I am done setting up the world spaces, I'll start populating. Chinese Ghouls are an obvious choice, as are American robots gone mad (like the ones all over the Capital Wasteland). I am thinking wildlife for other areas, like molerats in some of the caves, and feral ghouls. I am also thinking of an American Ghoul living in General Chase's old Headquarters tent, who can act as a vendor and repairman. I'll probably put a sleepable bed/cot in there as well.

Yes, and I am not sure if Bethesda didn't copy her idea with the "Animal Friends" perk in FO3 and NV. It is one of my favorites, so is the Witchcraft mod. And I actually like her idea with the Ferryboats better than my Marina mod; (where you had to rent a boat and ride the full tour, but could stop off at four landings along the way and a camp would be set up for you at each stop). SubRosa's Ferryboats, you come across them in the wilderness in your travels and can just use them - that is awesome, and much more realistic than finding boats everywhere that you can't use (like in the vanilla game). That was such a good idea, and keeps the player from swimming across and getting slaughterfish bites.

Update on the tractor garage:

We´ve spent a few days organizing it as we need to fit many boards, steel shelves and a bunch of miscellaneous things in it and pretty soon that space does not feel too big anymore, not that it ever did. All in all we now have two large and one small steel shelf up and no less than four wooden shelves for the boards.
We´ll get rid of some of the boards later that are not too great for anything other than firewood and that´ll free up some space for other things. After all, can´t have empty spaces anywhere, can we? rollinglaugh.gif

This year we´ll look into if we can get a smaller car garage up as well that we can use as a workshop. The problem is finding someone who can move it for us and get it into place. Also, money.. wacko.gif

The Rocu cottage project

Today Dad and I put up the framework to a 4m x 6m storage tent. It was a bit of a pain at the start but we figured it out. What´s left to do is even out the ground by the pillars, anchor it down and then of course put on the fabric which I think will be a little tricky. The tent is not too high but high enough and we can´t really have ladders against the framework.

We´ll see how difficult it´ll be smile.gif

We´re not quite sure though which pieces we should use as anchors, the manual doesn´t specify and it isn´t obvious. I think we might have to make a phone call before we leave home tomorrow.

Thanks, but the same can´t be said about the tent. It´s up now and looks quite good, but there are flaps on all four corners (along the short sides of the framework) which we cannot fasten because there aren´t any holes and there aren´t any strips or anything else there. We´ll make a call tomorrow but we might have to improvise here. Slightest wind and the flaps starts to rise, can´t have that.

Well, at least we can start to put stuff in and we already have. One compressor and a steel shelf so far. Took pixies but I´m too lazy to upload and post them at the moment tongue.gif

It was a bit of a pain to put the canvas up. It was heavy and kept getting stuck on everything, it even got a small hole in one place. It´s not a disaster though as the canvas is of no-rip design which means if a hole appears it won´t get bigger or tear up the canvas.

The tent is meant as storage for all the bits and bobs from my childhood home, including everything that was in the cellar and garage. There was a ton of stuff and I´m sure most of you can relate tongue.gif

A lot has been moved and the tent is already getting too small. We have to use our brainz and organize it, but that´s actually the most fun part in this project. I love doing that smile.gif

You should be able to patch that hole, if you need what is inside protected from precipitation/moisture/the elements. Most tent "kits" come with a couple patches for just such an event, but I've never seen a tent quite so big or with such heavy tarp to it!

Yes, we will patch that hole at some point. There is a glue we can use and the hole is not bigger than the head on a three inch nail so it won´t be much of a bother. The stuff needs protection but we´re not putting anything in that´s actually sensitive to the elements that we must close that hole immediately smile.gif

In the US now they are laying a 6 millimeter plastic tarp as a moisture barrier on dirt floors of crawl spaces under houses; and you can use them in tents as well as long as they are not laying flat where water will run in on them. They have to be taped up on the sides so water runs under them and not onto them if it goes beneath the tent or crawlspace.

I am spraying a moisture/mold/germ killing spray under my house to kill any microbial germs/etc. down there and then laying the rolled plastic down - taping it up the cement block walls of the crawl space so no more moisture can get into my crawl space from now on, just have to finish pulling the old insulation out of there first. Then I'll put up all new insulation and the crawl space should be immaculate!

Posted by: mirocu Apr 27 2016, 08:27 PM

That sounds like a good idea, similar to what they use when building garages like the one we built for the tractor. We don´t have it though because Dad didn´t think it was necessary plus I think he wanted to save on time = money. We would have needed it though, but I guess we can live without it.

What I'm finding it hard to figure out is where the stuff came from. Do you now have a bunch of empty buildings whose original content got moved? Or is there some humungous heap that never quite appears in any of the pictures?

SubRosa wins the internet today with that answer rollinglaugh.gif

The more boring answer is accumulation of things during at least three lifetimes. My grandpa, my grampa and my dad have all brought stuff home from their respective work places that "can prove useful someday". None of them ever threw anything away either and thus, the scrapyard we´re now digging through was born tongue.gif

Holy Cow, it is really getting filled up! Two things:

1. I really like the way you have set up that wood thing to hang tools on the left of the picture.

2. What good is that bench with all that stuff on it? get the junk off it and use it to sit on while you work! tongue.gif

We put regular sockets and fluorescent lights on the inside and a lamp on the outside, plus a special socket on the outside with which to run high-powered electrical things. It´ll be interesting to see the lights and lamp this evening, can´t wait smile.gif

Now all we have to do is fill the ditch which gives me a reason to play with the cavator laugh.gif

Update on Project Tractor Garage

Dad and I decided awhile back that the backside entrance was way too big, and now we have fixed that. We, or rather I, boarded up half of the space and now it covers the little blue trailer we have behind the tractor. Next winter will decide whether or not we´ll put up a door as the snow tend to get dragged in a long way from the frontside of the garage when there´s a big air flow.

I want to watch all these vids, but will have to do it on my PC, the laptop blackscreened twice in the past 30 minutes, urk. - Unless I'm going to get to see you in one of the vids, in which case I'm on it immediately!!!!!!

Detroit people are awesome! When they aren't shooting at you, or robbing you! laugh.gif wink.gif

I have never eaten at a single one of them! Though I have had a hotdog from American Coney Island, on Lafayette downtown. I don't think it made Anthony Bourdain's show, but it's a Detroit food landmark. TBH, a lot of classic Detroit restaurants didn't make his list. But then Detroit is a real foodie town. It would be hard to do a spot at them all.

I've actually had two Coney dogs - one from the site of the former "Coney Island" in New York; the other on Miami Beach! (I tour the US eating sausages? No, but since they have such a huge reputation just had to have one; and the NY one was when I was a kid with my parents = didn't remember how it tasted, laugh.gif )

Does Detroit have any other particular foods associated with it? Because he did ribs and mac and cheese; and I was kind of disappointed by that. How different can they be from any other city in the US? Comfort food is the same everywhere, I think.

There are certain things I eat in certain towns every time I go regardless; kind of a tradition. Example: Every time I go to Miami I have a plate of Black Beans over White Rice with "Platanos" = fried plantains. Every time I go to Maryland I'm having crab; New Orleans = crawdad; Georgia = peaches; Florida = oranges; etc.

I mean, I eat other stuff if I'm there a while; but make sure to get one of these "specialty" meals or foods each visit.

Oh, okay. Here is a list of what the internet says is the top things to eat while in Detroit:

https://www.thrillist.com/eat/detroit/detroit-s-best-food-50-things-to-eat-before-you-die

I've actually eaten some of these in NY or Chicago.

Posted by: SubRosa Jul 16 2016, 12:17 AM

Deep dish square pizzas are big here in Detroit. Buddy's and Jets made the list, and they are really good. But there is a little family-owned pizzeria called Holiday Pizza right by my place that makes what I think is the best pizza I have ever eaten. Downtown there are places in Greektown like Pizzapapalis that do a super deep dish, but I have never tried it.

When it comes to Corned Beef, there is a little Greek mom and pop restaurant near me called House of Reubens that makes the best Reuben Sandwiches. Because of all the factories around it gets so busy there during lunchtime on weekdays, that I only go there on the weekends. The line is literally out the door. There have also been times that I swear I saw the entire Sterling Heights Police Department in there eating their lunch (they like Holiday Pizza too).

Ball Park franks are really nothing to brag about. The best store-bought hot dogs are Koegels. They make them here in Michigan. Best hot dog ever. Buy the Viennas, not the Frankenfurters though.

The Hani Sandwiches from National Coney Island are really good as well. But I think their Taco Salad is the best thing on their menu. Instead of simply putting taco beef in the bottom, they put chili!

Packzi (pronunced Poo-nch Key) is a Detroit staple. Back in the day Hamtramck was all Polish, and every year on Fat Tuesday the Packzi's come out all over the city. In New Orleans they have Mardi Gras. In Detroit we eat incredibly fattening sugar doughnuts... laugh.gif

Pretty much the same with Peirogi, except it doesn't have its own special day.

Mexicantown didn't get a mention in that article, and you can get a lot of great Mexican street food there during Cinco De Mayo. My ex Jaelyn lived down there for a while. There is a place called Mexican Village up Van Dyke from me that makes fantastic tacos with deep fried shells. That is another place that is always so busy that I almost never go there. The wait time is over an hour on the weekends.

Poutine is on that list, but its not really a Detroit thing. It is more a Canadian thing.

Saganaki is a Detroit classic. "Opa!" is what they shout when they light it on fire. It is something you have to eat at least once in your life. It's an experience! smile.gif

TBH, I have never heard of a lot of stuff on that list. What we do have is a lot of really good ethnic foods thanks to local enclaves, like Polish, Greek, and Mexican.

What is also not on the list is Tony's. Its off I-75 up past Flint. They aren't known for their good food, but rather for their massive portions. The BLT sandwiches are too big to fit in your mouth. They must have a pound of bacon alone! (and I am not exaggerating!). Nothing screams 'Merica! more than that. smile.gif

It is a real mixed blessing when you find a restaurant so good that people swarm the place - you know you will have a taste sensation of a lifetime; but the wait makes your ability to even try it an iffy thing.

I haven't had Peirogi since I was a kid; my neighbor used to make it and stuff me with them - she is the one that got me into cooking; she was a gourmet.

OMG, BLT is about my favorite sandwich (especially here in ETN where you can get Grainger County Tomatoes) - and I have been banned from eating bacon. verysad.gif That description alone of bacon stacked so thick you can't open your mouth wide enough to bite the sandwich could put me into cardiac arrest, laugh.gif

I've had the square deep dish in Chicago, but I don't know if it is the same. I think a Greek pizza sounds VERY interesting; as long as it is NOT made with Lamb. Urk.

We have a small family owned pizza place (close to where I moved to!) that has the best pizza's I've ever had EVAH; they are always so busy that people stand up to eat or sit in their cars for blocks around there on the lunch hour. I used to eat there once per week when I was working near there - our whole office would get together and go for lunch there; but we had a plan that included calling our order in well in advance and going to lunch early that day before the lunch crowds hit.

Opa! Ha, in German that is GrandFather; in South America they shout it when dancing in some areas. I wonder if it is a Greek thing too?

This all sounds so good! And now I'm hungry, rollinglaugh.gif

I like Pierogi. I usually get Dudek Pierogi from the store. Kowalski makes really good ones too, but you have to get them at the Kowalski Deli. Kielbasa and Kapusta is my favorite Polish food. That one I make at home. Kielbasa is my favorite kind of sausage. When I make chili and put sausage in it, I always use Kielbasa.

I think it is often the little mom and pop restaurants that are the best. Instead of following a corporate formula, they make the food they love, in their own special way that they probably learned since they were kids.

I like Kielbasa too - I stir fry it with onions and mixed veggies and serve it over rice - good stuff. And you can't imagine the tremendous restraint I am showing in not mentioning any jokes regarding this discussion from you and pointing out a certain scene in Teresa Fiction from a long time ago, laugh.gif I actually put a sentence of dialogue in Maxical's story in tribute to that scene in Teresa's story: Fathis Aren says, "Nae lad, I don't eat sausages." And thinking of Teresa is what made me write that, laugh.gif

I remember loving Pierogi so much that my neighbor used to fix it every time I came over just to kind of spoil me. Oddly though; I can't remember what it tasted like anymore.

Holy Crap! Yeah, no, that might be a bit TOO much bacon, even for me; rollinglaugh.gif

So. You are not going to believe this blink.gif

Yesterday evening I went down to the tractor garage to inspect it all again. Thing is, we have a cellar door complete with frame from an old house my dad used to live in and we have talked loosely about maybe using it on the back of the tractor garage.
When I got down there I measured the door frame and then the gap and to my surprise it was only off by a couple millimeters! But since I hadn´t measured the door frame carefully I decided to go check again, and lo and behold; it wasn´t off at all! It was the exact measurement as the gap! I took the frame and placed it in the hole to confirm and yes, it was like the name of level 121 in Chip´s Challenge: A Perfect Match!! blink.gif blink.gif

When I dug the hole and put the wall section up I didn´t actually consider using the cellar door because Dad and I had also talked about making a door ourselves out of boards so I just ended the wall where it looked good. I never in a million years expected the door frame to actually fit when I hadn´t even trid to make it fit! I couldn´t have made a better job if I had actually measured for it when I put the wall up!

And here are pixies to prove it happened laugh.gif

I will of course remove the bottom part when it´s in place and hopefully we´ll get hold on a small window to put up above the door to make more light come in that way.

Holy Cow, Mirocu! It doesn't get any better than that! I don't know if I'd call that luck or just plain innate skill, it just doesn't get any better than that! And I didn't even have to beg for pics, which is icing on the cake!

Of course, I've been with this shed since it was poles in the ground; I'd really like to see it with the door and window in and painted red; I'm sure you know that!

Awesome job!

Brother's Attic Raccoon Dilemma: Found a message on my answering machine from the company we hired to trap and remove raccoon(s) and eventually remove attic feces and sanitize as needed. One large raccoon trapped and removed yesterday (Wednesday) morning. Nothing caught today. They'll leave traps in place several more days to insure (?) no more raccoons.

Brother's Document Filing System (or lack thereof): Spend around three hours sorting out stacks of old utility bills and such, shredding most of them. A drop in the bucket. Woke sick Wednesday, still feel poorly, so didn't put in another few hours today as originally planned.

TMJ treatment: Received another "ear heat treatment" this morning, my second of the week. (I've had more TMJ appts these past several weeks after suffering something of a setback.) Still following my various daily TMJ exercise / stretching routines with an iron fist.

NOT YET BEGUN: Ramrod getting Bro's landline phones working properly again. (He can dial out and talk okay, but incoming calls don't work. No sense tackling this until raccoon problem is over with.)

I hope you didn't go up in that attic yourself with your delicate health! nono.gif Working in a bacteria filled environment like that you have to use at least an N-95 mask ($7.00 at Home Depot) over your mouth and nose; full hazmat gear including hood and shoes. ($12.00 at Home Depot)

Don't take any risks with animal feces; it has airborn bacteria.

Nor do we want bullet holes in the roof and ceiling, to say nothing of what might happen to my bro's possessions in the line of fire. Which reminds me of my now standard lame comment while at the Walmart checkout registers. For some months I've needed to stick my debit card in a little slot rather than slide it as used to be the case. The card must remain in-place until the transaction is finished. At that point a sound signals that the card can be removed. The sound reminds me of a duck call. Me being me, I can't help but warn the teller what might happen during hunting season, when customers hearing the sound are apt to whip out their concealed carries and start firing at random. Told ya it was lame.

Yeah, after spending several hours Tuesday at my bro's house sorting saved correspondence, most of which is worthless and unnecessary, and shredding lots of it, (much remains to sort and shred) I woke Wednesday morning feeling miserable. I thought then that prolonged proximity to raccoon waste might be the cause. Then again, my bro keeps his house a good five degrees cooler than me, and I forgot to bring a sweatshirt and toboggan to combat that. (I keep my house at 73F during the summer, and wear sweatshirt and toboggan indoors as often as not. I've never been able to tolerate "cold" well since my long struggle with pneumonia at the turn of the century.) As mentioned, I had planned to work on the project again yesterday, but wisely (????) decided to hold off until the raccoon problem is solved and the attic cleansed. As for my bro, it hasn't bothered him, but then he has the constitution of a nuclear-bomb proof bunker.

Very wise. I used full hazmat gear to remove the possom-infested insulation from my crawl space. At one point it felt like I couldn't breath; so for just a second I removed the N-95 mask and gulped some unfiltered air - it made me sick as a dog; just that one breath.

Neither you or your brother should be breathing the air where rodent feces is without a good mask to filter that bacteria out. And spraying a broad spectrum bacterial virucidal when you are done isn't a bad idea either, but for the gods sake where the full hazmat and mask to spray it so you don't breathe that virucidal in or it seep into your pores, lol.

The folks handling trapping and removal will also perform cleanup. which to my limited understanding includes feces removal, chemical treatment and insolation replacement as/if needed. After researching the risks of doing it ourselves, no way was I gonna allow myself or my bro to tackle it. (Well, it's his house and money, so I couldn't have stopped him if he had insisted on saving bucks and attempting it on our own. Luckily he took no persuasion at all to go "pro".)

We´re now gonna have to put up a lockable gate http://i.imgur.com/oOStCsC.jpg. Everyone and their boss is either going by car or bicycle straight across our place. Not only is that annoying since they pass right through our grounds but it´s also dangerous. We don´t always look too closely since we don´t expect anyone to come through there and soon enough there´s gonna be an accident. We have a sign by the main road but it´s ignored but I reckon if they go all that way and have no choice but to go all the way back they´re not gonna do it again.

Too bad we have to do this but people have no respect for signs anymore dry.gif As for now I parked my cavator there to block it off.

Are they going to a place that is not accessible by any other road? (or just trying to save some driving time by cutting through your yard? ) Geez, you would think how close they have to turn by your shed would give them a clue that it isn't a thoroughfare!

No, it just leads to our place and nowhere else.

They´re not saving driving time either but some people go places just because they can and don´t mind signposts saying it´s a private road. Or sometimes they take a too early right turn if they´re going to our neighbour from the main road (at the other end). Well, if the road is blocked and they have to turn around and drive back they´re not likely gonna do it twice.

And we´ll soon have a sign up saying Private Area from the main road and hopefully it´ll help. If not I´m gonna go with Acadian´s suggestion wink.gif

And we´ll soon have a sign up saying Private Area from the main road and hopefully it´ll help. If not I´m gonna go with Acadian´s suggestion wink.gif

Drove to bro's house this morning to see if he had more info on animal removal progress. He doesn't. But...I saw a raccoon caught in the on-roof trap, and noticed a strong aroma near the living room window, where another trap is set. (I didn't see either an animal or the trap there, so it might be a lingering smell from some days ago or smell from the roof animal.

Drove to County Court House to drop off paperwork requesting excusal from Jury Duty this September due to poor hearing and iffy health.

Drove to Walmart for groceries. Spent $50.33, 33 cents over budget. sad.gif

Drove home. Called Animal Removal folks to inform them of caught raccoon(s). Not available. Left message.

Tried to call Social Security. Too long a wait time...estimated 35min. Gave up.

UPCOMING PROJECTS:
Will prolly mow the lawn shortly. Slightly cooler temps than usual, plus overcast sky.

Figure out what to do about now being locked out of my online Social Security account because of new requirement requiring a cell phone with text capacity to log on. I neither have nor want such a device.

That is just b-c! They shouldn´t require you to use certain devices for such things! Optional, sure, but not mandatory!

Not sure how the Social Security Administration thinks people living on Social Security benefits can afford stuff like cell phones and computers! Here a computer is required; and if you don't have one they suggest taking all your classified documents down to the public library and using theirs! Now cell phones? How secure!

Can anyone say "Identity Theft?" Yes, I thought you could!

Went out immediately after posting yesterday's input and mowed the lawn. Thanks to slightly cooler than usual temps, overcast sky and a bit of a breeze it was my easiest mow of the year to date, except maybe for the first couple back before summer heat set in. Didn't even need a cool-down break. (Thank goodness, cause I forgot to take one.) A heart reading taken only a few minutes after the mow read... blood pressure 106/67, pulse 88. Not bad at all.

Ended up spending most of that afternoon at bro's house helping him switch his ratty old bed, which has pretty much disintegrated after decades of use, with the one in what was mom's bedroom. Mom's bed is ever so much better. I laid down on it for a while. Puts my own mattress to shame. I'm envious.

Also discovered, assuming my current thoughts are correct, that I may have made a serious blunder while sorting, trashing and shredding bro's stacks of paperwork. What I interpreted from his input about healthcare documents is that two of the three providers appearing in the stacks are obsolete. Only one, which shall remain nameless, still applies. I got rid of all supposed obsolete healthcare paperwork. Didn't think anything more about it until yesterday, when the project was much further along. Then, it became evident that some key documents he should have had from the "good" provider are absent. The little paperwork from them on hand doesn't look like a basic health insurance insurance to me. I think it's a supplemental plan, and that his basic plan is one of the two I destroyed all evidence of. I'm not (yet) 100% sure of this, but things just don't add up. Not sure where to go from here, since everything that could have helped me verify my suspicions is unrecoverably gone. What a mess. Shame ... shame ... shame ... <ding ding ding>

Never did hear from the animal removal folks. The raccoon caught in the roof trap remained there all day, stinking up the place. Don't know if they removed it today, as bro's phone line is now totally dead. (Until yesterday after he could still call out on it, but not receive incoming calls.) No sense addressing that issue until the raccoon problem is solved, the attic sanitized, and the roof repaired.

Woot!

If the article I just read online is true, and I haven't yet attempted to verify it, it looks as if Social Security received so many complaints about their new account log-in requirement that they have already made the cell-phone text requirement optional. They plan to reinstate the extra security step within six month once viable (???????) options are in place.

I can't imagine how they could have considered a cell phone text as a security measure to begin with! (no less an "Extra" security measure!)

I guess "extra' as compared to also requiring you to do it all on a computer where your keystrokes are being monitored 24/7 by spyware so ID thefters can get hold of all your pertinent info along with your SSN to make it easier for them to pretend to be you. And hey, why not scan your drivers license in while at it so they have a picturel ID and DL to use!!!

(not to mention that SS has been hacked yearly in the months between January and April to grab all our income tax refunds.

I mean, can anyone say "lazy" or "just plain dumb?" Yeah, I thought you could !!!

(Thanks, Mr. Rogers!)

A couple of project updates:

Spent a couple of hours at my brother's house this Wednesday. Trimmed back most of the branches on two of the three bushes animals can clime to reach his roof. My hand trimmer isn't stronger enough to lop off several largish branches that most definitely need to come down. Didn't have access to the shed in which he stores the chainsaw.

Tested his phone line at the outside junction box. I heard as much static on the line from that as I had inside. This surprised me. I thought for sure the problem would prove to e internal. But it gets stranger. That after, back at my place, I decided to call his number before calling the phone company to have them run a line test. The call went through perfectly, which hasn't happened to his troubles began. Or rather it seemed to go through perfectly, he not being home to answer. I decided to hold off calling AT&T until attempted to get in touch with him in the evening. Come evening he calls me...good connection, no static, no line going bad in the midst of conversation. Maybe 30min later I call him. For the first time in weeks he's able to hear the phone ring, pick it up, and talk. Again, solid connection throughout the conversation. I decide to let the matter drop until/unless he starts having problems again. Today, I attempt to call him. Every time I get an automated voice saying his line is busy. I know that's not true coz he's at work. Thing is, is the line screwing up again or did he incorrectly set down the receiver after our phone con last night????????

I'll be taking my neighbor, who works as something of a freelance handyman, to look at bro's roof this coming Saturday. (The animal removers patched two holes with metal to keep out critters, but did not perform actual roof/shingle repair.)

ADDENDUM: Drove to bro's house to insure phone(s were properly resting in their cradles...they were. Returned home. Called AT&T repair. Scheduled a repair visit Monday, 29 Aug...soonest available date.

Called Court Court Clerk Office some days ago to check on status of Jury Duty exemption request (due to poor hearing and unreliable health). Was told, to all intents and purposes, don't call us, we'll call you. I just hope I don't slip through the cracks and my request never makes it to whoever determines such things. Back in 2012 I received exemption notification appreciably sooner.

Project updates:

Today...
...Grocery run. The few Fuji Apples Walmart stocked looked rancid. No peaches at all. Bought a bag of Ambrosia Apples, which I was totally unfamiliar with. Had half of one for lunch. It tasted quite Fuji-like, so worth the investment. Oh, I forgot to buy eggs. Will try and remember to grab some on the way home from my TMJ appointment this Thursday.
...Met my handyman next door neighbor at my bro's house so he could gather info to make an estimate on roof repairs.
...Either very early this morning or sometime yesterday AT&T supposedly fixed my bro's phone-line issue.
...Received a letter from the County Court Clerk informing me that my request for exemption from jury duty has been approved.
...Received a letter informing me of mandatory participation in the American Community Survey. Was given an online address to complete the survey. Checked to see if said survey is on the up and up. It is. Completed survey online...a pain in the rump.
...Received an explanation of benefits from Medicare dated 19 Aug. As of that date they still have me own several hundred dollars in fees due to my doctor billing them under the wrong code. This has been a months-long ongoing battle for me, with the doctors office saying they are gonna fix it, but nothing getting done. On the plus side, I've received no billing statement from the doctor's office in some time, so maybe they are still working on it (??????). Another pain in the rump.
...online UPS shows that my mattress topper is "out for delivery".

Seems like you have quite a few pains in your rump, Decrepit. Hopefully things will clear up soon smile.gif

Projects worked on today:
...Early this morning I edited my Minecraft Forum screenshot thread to include a link to a brand spanking new download of my Minecraftian world, which had been uploading to my online storage site of choice overnight.
...Mid morning TMJ appointment to measure progress or lack thereof.
...Mid morning visit to Walmart on the drive home from appointment to buy eggs. Found a good many men's clothes on clearance sales. Bought four colored T-shirds and 2 pair of mid-thigh athletic shorts for around $15US.
...Mid/late morning balanced my savings and checking account ledgers. Was a real mess. Took forever to find and correct my many mistakes.
...Late morning/early afternoon mowed lawn after lunch.

Sometime around 2012 or 2013 my rump actually did go out on me. Was sitting in front of my computer, on the very chair I'm in now, when all of a sudden I developed excruciating pain in my posterior. From that point on I couldn't sit in a chair any length of time unless it was well upholstered or, as in the case with THIS chair, supplemented by a cushy pillow. Could no longer sleep on my back, which is the only way I had slept up until then for as long back as I can remember. Now THAT was a pain in the rump. Took months, but I eventually acclimated myself to sleeping on my side, still somewhat painful but endurable. Wasn't until early this year (2016) that the pain diminished enough to allow me to attempt laying on my back again. Still not overly comfortable but doable, rump wise. Sad thing is that by then I had developed TMJ Disorder, which has resulted in pains in my neck and shoulders, so that neither back nor side sleep is overly pleasant. Hey, they don't call me Decrepit for nothing.

A sad side-effect of this unfortunate situation is that, at the height of my posterior malady, my beloved but by then ancient 95% waveless extra-firm waterbed mattress passed the point of no return. My gosh that was a fine mattress in its day. I consider it amongst the best purchases I ever made. Thing is, with my rear bothering me I was not able to properly audition a replacement. Ended up buying a memory foam mattress which earned high marks at several mattress-centric websites and had loads of positive endorsements at Amazon. Ever since then I've wondered how much my current sleep issues are the result of natural decrepitude and how much, if any, from having settled on a possibly less than stellar mattress. Such is life.

New project: have my car's fuel pump replaced. I'm taking it in first thing tomorrow (Tuesday) and should get it back by day's end. To be on the safe side I moved my TMJ appointment from 0830 Wednesday morning to that same time Thursday.

Yeah. I still gotta make it to the mechanic tomorrow. If I'd had my wits about me I'd have asked if they would keep it overnight and give me a ride back home. I certainly have no need of the car between now and then, and can't risk using it even if I did. Oh well, the shop's no more than a mile away. With any luck I'll make it that far.

Another project: I simply MUST remember to download that bloody big ARK update overnight fairly soon. Not holding my breath.

Posted by: Decrepit Sep 22 2016, 07:51 PM

My sole project for the day, aside from attending a TMJ appointment first thing this morning, is to mow the lawn. I did the back yard just after lunch, then took what I assumed would be a reasonably short break. Only, the heat got to me too much. Gonna wait and finish up after supper with the sun low on the horizon. You'd think that by this time of the year the temperature would be bearable...but no.

ADDENDUM: Now just after 1800 mowing is done.

This weekend I started a new project; clearing up a tractor road in the woods from the hugest rocks. Yep, more cavator action!

Almost done with the first section. Got one huge rock out of the ground yesterday and I´m almost done filling the hole with small rocks and dirt. After this I´ll be tackling some more but I don´t yet know how big this project will be. I basically just wanted this first part done since it´s the worst, but now when I have the cavator there I might as well try my luck on some more rocks.

Time will tell how many will be removed.

Took a messed up tomahawk handle (hickory wood) and cut the head of it off about 5 1/2 inches (13.97cm/139.7mm for our metric friends!) down. Then Khajiit drilled a series of holes in line with each other on the part of the handle head where he made the cut and now working on clearing out the space in between the holes. Tested by tapping the knife tang down into it an now it's stuck, lol, which makes this one nervous since he's tugging on a sharp object!

The axe didn't have holes in the handle, he drilled them to accommodate the knife blade ... I think.

Precisely. The tang of the blade isn't wide enough to accommodate the usual scales and pins setup so Khajiit is doing what is called a "Hidden Tang" handle construction. You drill the holes in the handle material (for which this one is using the tomahawk handle head because it has a good shape to it) in a straight line in the center of the material: one straight down and the two on the outside at an angle towards the center hole to accommodate the shape of the knife blade tang. You then clean out the areain between the holes and you are left with a slot that will envelope the knife tang. The tsuka of a Japanese katana is a good example of a hidden tang hilt construction.

Hmm, Khajiit hasn't considered that. This one did give a Morakniv blade with a custom made handle to his father for his birthday last year. Perhaps after Khajiit's skill level and capability (need more tools!) increases he will start to sell them. What this one would like to do is get into forging his own blades.

Had. Khajiit bought https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00J6W2UGU/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1478724008&sr=8-7&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=morakniv+blanks and put a guard and a handle on it. Then gave it to father as a birthday gift.

This sounds Awesome!!!! And yes, I actually would love to see some pics of your work!

What's going to retain the blade? The Morakniv blades have a notch that a screw or rivet can catch, but the one you're using now has nothing. If it's a good steel, it will be hard to drill a hole in it, so you're left with clamping in some way.

Ooh, a projects thread, eh? Bought 96 year old house last year, so I've always got something to do. Remodeling the master bedroom, at the moment.

I bought my son a 30 year old house last year off an internet auction and have spent the last 6 months re-plumbing the entire house, new central heat and air, new roof, new wiring, and new insulation. It needs painting, wrap-around deck and porch repairs, a retaining wall, and driveway repairs.

But when all is said and done, the house is a Builder's special made for his own personal home, so it has some awesome features; and it is in a neighborhood where all the homes are valued at 250% what I paid for it - and hopefully after fixed it will give my son a nice return on the investment to start his future with.

Epoxy is what is used to hold it all together. Khajiit has seen examples of hidden tang blades that had a pin to hold the blade in the handle (like aforementioned katana tsuka), and this one has made a hidden tang pinned hilt for an old crappy machete he had laying aroun, which turned out ok, if a little loose.

Today's big project was visiting a laundromat and washing/drying six loads of clothes, bed linen and so on. I dreaded it. The laundromat I've used for years (since the one in my small town was forced to close for not properly maintaining the facility) cost and arm and a leg. A good portion of its machines tended to be out of order, as were the money changer and other dispensers. It had gotten so bad I was seriously considering buying my own washer and dryer!

Searching the net the other day, I noticed a second laundromat listed for that town/small city. I recalled that there had been a laundromat at that location some years ago, but thought it had closed. I drove there this morning. It was a good thing I did so. I was right about the closure, except that it reopened about a year ago. Washing machines are very reasonable, less than half the cost per machine than the other place. Dryers are much much cheaper. The youngish fellow on-duty was very friendly... we had pleasant chat for much of my stay.

Stopped at Walmart for groceries on the way home.

Tomorrow morning I drive in to town for a TMJ appointment. I'm hoping they'll let me not have to wear my mouth splint during the day. (I'll still need to at night.) Not gonna hold my breath. That was supposed to happen last month. Only, I was told my jaw was still shifting too much. So far as I can tell it behaves no differently now than it did then. But what do I know?

Thursday I eat T-day lunch with my brother at a local (for him) all-you-can-eat buffet. I suspect this year will be something of a disappointment. The buffet we've eaten T-day lunch at for some years closed. The food at this other place isn't as good. At least it wasn't when I ate there every now and again years ago.

Posted by: mirocu Nov 22 2016, 08:14 AM

Laundromats are big in the U.S, yes? I have never seen such a thing over here. Plus, I prefer to do the washing while hanging on the net biggrin.gif

Posted by: SubRosa Nov 22 2016, 05:43 PM

Most houses in the US have a washer and dryer, but not all. Apartments rarely have them in the actual apartment. Usually they are in the basement, or not there at all. The ones in the basement are coin fed, and cost a lot more than going to the laundromat. So a lot of folks here do use the laundromat.

Posted by: Cain Nov 22 2016, 06:28 PM

That was the only thing I hated about apartment living. Cost damn near three dollars in quarters to do my laundry.

Today's project was composing and mailing holiday snail-mail letters to the four people I still send them to. Three are for old military buddies. One goes to an aunt and uncle in their early 90s. Normally one generic letter suffices. This year my aunt and uncle get a separate letter due to age sadly beginning to take its toll on them. The other three continue to receive identical letters, though I did add about half a page for the friend I keep in closest contact with.

I would likely have procrastinated for some days before composing them except that my brother wanted me to copy HIS letter to our aunt and uncle on my printer. He called last night to remind me that he wants his letter mailed ASAP. We planned to share the same envelop. I was pretty much forced to get mine done or waste money on an extra stamp. Once that letter was out of the way, it only made since to whip out the other(s).

This morning I took my first stab and a long contemplated but never before attempted tidying and simplifying of my Oblivion Bash Installers directory. As a certain US politician might say, it's a mess, especially texture and mesh BAIN packages. I run a mix-and-match combination of a great many different downloads, added piecemeal over the years. Each download normally has its own package. Some packages partly overwrite others. Some house a good many files, only one or two of which are needed. I found one package thus far that is totally overwritten by other packages and thus useless. And so on. None of this does any in-game harm as BAIN is smart enough to know which conflicting files need to take priority, so long as they are arranged in the right order. But . . . it's hard as heck for "me" to keep track of what's what. Plus, should I ever need rebuild my Oblivion installation, it'd be next to impossible reconstruct exactly what I have now, assuming I want it to do so, which for the most part I would.

I started out with some relatively simple (though it took hours) organizing. I combined separate BAIN packages for caves, Ayleid ruins, sewers, and forts into one "Dungeon Texture & Mesh Late-Load Combo" package, making sure to keep my preferred file choices in those few cases when individual packages conflicted. Also made an "Odds & Ends - Texture & Mesh Late-Load Combo" package. It's built, as is the Dungeon package, in true BAIN format, as follows:

01 Cook Steaks
02 Better Ham
03 Better Potion Bottles Reduced
04 Rugs & Tapestries - Mgtr
05 Dinnerware Combo v1dot7
06 Road & City Signs (this itself a combo of two separate sign downloads)

I could have lumped these together in traditional format, but categorizing them as I do makes it easy to see exactly what I have.

The last combo made thus far today is another true BAIN package, consisting of:

01 Cascade Foaming Falls Redux
02 Foaming Falls Elsweyr
03 Enhanced Beach Foam

My plan is that, from now on, when I download texture/mesh packs that relate to the above I'll modify the appropriate Combo package to house 'em, rather than pile on separate packages.

Sooner or later I'm gonna have to tackle wilderness textures/meshes and Landscape LOD files. THAT's gonna be a chore. Over the years I experimented with a great many of those, with lots of little BAIN packages cluttering my install folder. Wrye Bash keeps track of it all, but I go snow-blind just looking at 'em. Gonna make those the last of my combo projects. Hopefully it'll go easier once I'm more comfortable with the process. I don't intend to make one HUGE unwieldy wilderness package, but am not yet sure how I intend to sub-divide.

Benefit thus far... 18 BAIN packages removed (including the one that was totally overwritten and one I stopped using some time ago but forgot to delete), 3 Combo packages added, making my installer folder 15 packages lighter.

Heh... panic.gif indeed. Spent a few hours this afternoon compiling a LandscapeLOD color-map combo pack for my self-created files. Man o man that section was a mess. They were originally housed in somewhere between 18 and 23 separate BAIN packages. (I forgot to write the number down.) To my own amazement, those old packages contained so many variants of the same files that, once redundancies were eliminated, my Combo Package consisted of a grand total of seven files. Seven!!!! I will next tackle a complementary combo package for self created LandscapeLOD normal maps. Those too are a mess, but are a least housed in far fewer individual packages. On the other hand, those old packages aren't well labeled, making the files difficult to decipher. (Unlike other Oblivion textures and meshes, LandscapeLOD file names are written as numbers rather than letters, giving no clue which section of the map they correspond with, especially to someone like myself who has absolutely no head for numbers.

As to correspondence, I'm too slow witted these days to trust myself to spontaneously extemporize orally with any guaranty of success. Leastwise I'd rather not have to depend on being able to do so.

I half love this idea and half don't. You immortalize the memory of the fun you had putting the puzzle together; (good) - but I like doing puzzles over again if I have enjoyed doing one. (so wouldn't want to glue them to a board in that case).

So, maybe if you did the puzzle with someone who you particularly wanted to always remember that time (like if Taylor Swift came and did the puzzle with you - would most def want to immortalize that moment) - otherwise I'd want to enjoy the puzzle over and over again.
