If you look at the remains of the Dwemer in the Bamz-Amschend ruins under Mournhold, whatever killed them was instant. The piles of their ashes are next to tables where they had been eating, by the doors next to their armour where they had been on guard duty. No signs of fight or flee.
This surely shows that the disappearence was an act of a gods, rather than a war or natural disaster. kvleft.gif

Not sure if i'm right in saying this - but Dwemer aren't actually dwarves are they.

They are the Dwarves of TES. However, they weren't dwarves in the sense that they were short.

As to why they are referred to as Dwarves:

1) A mistranslation of the word "Dwemer".
Dwe- meaning short, deep, smart
Mer meaning folk, people (elves)

One possible translation would thus be "Short Folk". However, the correct translation (in this case) would be "Deep Folk".

2) Sometime during the past the Dwemer lived in the same area as a race of giants. To the giants, the Dwemer obviously appeared short and therefore the giants started calling the Dwemer "dwarves".

Either could be the right reason, or neither. One thing is for sure though; the Dwemer were basically of the same height as your average Dunmer.

Yeah, that's right.

I think I read Dwemer lore is out the game, yet the armour is still in, but, then I read somewhere else that "you can try and find the lost Dwarven race" but I think this is speculation based on Morrowind's quests/points of interest.
But, we wont know until we're playing it in depth ourselves.

Morrowind was fairly helpful on this topic. Well, kinda. When meeting with Vivec, his "library" includes several papers which have various viewpoints on their disappearance.

It has recently been confirmed in the third fan interview that it will not be explained.

biggrin.gif that's ok! it's just another thing Bethesda would waste time on, not to mention those bloody shadows (which, believably, I don't give a flip about) biggrin.gif
