I've seen that on the official forums. Pretty dumb if you asked me. And think of the time some politician could have saved by not writing up that law.

He/She might have even done something useful.

Well think about it, they have the loophole that as long as you give you real name you can be annoying so that no one can say its against the first amendment, much like they have the law saying the government can't read emails without a warrant while they're in transfer, but the NSA scans every email that goes through the world wide web, they just wait until after its been transferred.

No one bothered to stand up against this loophole and get it changed, but it's caused a lot of problems, and this one causes pure oppression, but will people still even care enough? The water is turning up a few degress and nobody seems to notice.

It should be able to be considered under the First Amendment. Anonymous writers might be annoying to someone that reads it, but is it illegal for that person to remain anonymous? No. The internet shouldn't be any different.

So i could go onto my blog and start being racist and stuff cusing out the black folk and as long as I put my name in the corner it makes that okay? (Granted I would never do it, thats a whole 'nother story)

yes I know this is a simplified dumbed down version that is what it is right? yell at me if i'm wrong.

That is pretty stupid. Honestly why should you be allowed to flame people if you reveal your real name? That is absurd. If they make one illegal(which is misguided in the first place as it would be very difficult to enforce) they should make the other illegal. Just goes to show you how stupid the American government is.

Wow. Doomed, thanks for posting this. I'm always behind on the news, I probably wouldn't have found out otherwise. Jeez, though, that is such an idiotic law, as well as being unconstitutional. Hmm.... I'd better be careful not to be obnoxious, then.

Umm... guys I hate to point this out...but...

If you actually read the law... This is only an extension of existing laws about harrassment. For example, it has been illegal for a very long time for you to continue to call someone on the telephone over and over again. This just extends the law to email and other electronic media. Its not the big deal the media is making it out to be.

Remember the media is trying to get you to pay attention to them and the only way they can do it is to sensationalize everything!

It in NO way is going to affect forum postings or anything of that nature. It is meant to protect a person from ON-GOING and REPEATED harrassment by a specific individual.

The title means nothing. If one single congressman so wanted, he could slip in an amendment making it illegal not to perform a human sacrifice every Thursday (and then run slander ads against all his opponents for not supporting the "defend our homeland and help the poor abused women" bill).

Effectively, now whenever a must-pass legislation like this "defend our homeland and help the poor abused women" bill gets drafted, any single congressman can write whatever law he likes, assuming that he gets it slipped into the fine print of the bill -- relevant or not, completely contradictory to the spirit of the bill or not.

Eliminating such a thing would be a high priority for any fair government. Not so for a government that only needs to present the illusion of fairness to people like you, who will read only the titles of such bills and sadly represent the majority of voters.

What we need are bipartisan committees that will thoroughly read every bill. That's one of the biggest problems with congress, they never read most than the opening summaries of the bills they pass. In Farenheit 9/11 Moore was interviewing a congressman asking him if he knew about the hidden clauses in the Patriot Act that severely limited americans freedom's (not as bad as certain riders* though, probably because they knew people would be interested in reading this act) and the guy shoved it off as, "Well they're too long to read every act that passes through congress."

*A hidden law that slips through a bill that no congressman would vote against.

Yeah, names mean nothing.

Like the Clean Air Act that makes it legal to pollute more.
