Olav, It is a delightful combination of both. You start out in a greenland and play solo until you hone your skills to a certain level. Then you are pitted against the invading enemy and go through something called The Charring - in which the beautiful greenery is totally scorched by these huge firebolts that burn the land and leave behind these pits with the remnant cyrstalbolts sticking out. Very ugly. Then eventually you go over the mountains up to greener lands again.
After the charring, at anytime you have a choice of whether to fight alone, with a party of "mercenery" NPCs, a real party of other players or a mixed party of player/merceneries. It is really cool and at different gates and at different times it is more beneficial to choose real players/NPCs/go it alone.
I hope you will give it a try. It is great fun and it is free online. In fact, it was the first MMORPG since Diablo to be free of monthly payments and it has started a trend amongst the other mmorpg's of giving 1 year free trial (Anarchy Online), Shadowbane has gone completely free now (until it crashes-no maintenance will be done to the server), free 7days with Dungeon & Dragons, .... go to www.mmorpg.com - - - and check out what's going on. Everybody seems to be getting on the freebie train now. Yay!! Way to set a trend, Guild Wars.

One update on what Ibis said, the cataclysmic event that destroys the tutorial type place is called The Searing, rather than the charring The main enemy in the first area are called the Charr though

QUOTE(Ibis @ May 9 2006, 06:26 AM) OMG Wolfie, you are right! The Searing .... I am getting mixed up about fighting The Charr aren't I? I actually really like the look of those huge crystalline looking arrow-type formations that stick out of the craters in the seared landscape. Thanks for the correction! Lol any time And still no factions, probably sometime next week

Well Ibis, i had a chance to play FActions for a while, and it's good fun. All the proffessions seem to have gotten a bunch of new skills, and the two new proffessions are both good fun too. As others have mentioned, you get a lot of exp fast, but they've balanced that by making the enemies pretty tricky right from the get-go. Also, they added an entire new landmass to play on, not quite as big as the one from the original by the looks of it, but still quite expansive

They've updated the storage now for those who have factions. You pay another 50 and there's another tab in the storage that can hold 250 of every crafting material there is, but you have to buy the upgrade for each character, much like opening a new storage account. Also, you cna only get the upgrade in Cantha, so if you have charactes who aren't there, you have to wait til they reach lion's Arch and can travel there before you can make use of the upgrade. Still cool though, means no more crafting materials taking up space in my storage

This sounds fascinating. I have heard that Factions is more 'Oriental' oriented, whatever that means. I could definitely use more storage space. So Cantha - is that a town in the new landmass? What is you all's favorite towns in Guild Wars? Mine are definitely Lions Arch - I love fighting in the arena there. My characters aren't very high in level yet. My ranger is highest and she is 18. I also like Beetletun )I think that's how you spell it) and the hot springs town near there which I can't remember the name of. I like Scoundrels Rise too. What is your favorite monster to fight? I love to kill Mergoyles and to collect their skulls. I also like to fight those giant tree creatures. My favorite mission so far was the one where you teleport that pyramid-thingy back and collect true disciples along the way. Look for us when we play ... The Explorers Club Guild with a dark green cape with a bright gold sun on the back.

You can play factions without owning the original, you just wont be able to travel to Tyria (the place where the oiginal takes place) or do any of the things there.
