i completed the finger of the mountain quest and got a spell that does 200 damage but requires 2000 magicka to use it!!!! whats the point of that as i cant ever see me getting that much magicka together to be able to use it no matter what my lvl...
am i doing something wrong? is it a glitch? is there a way to get that much magicka?

That spell is leveled, and is usually much too strong if you do the quest when you are high level. I did it at low level (5 or something), and got a spell that did 20 damage.

It's a known issue, and I know there is a console command for leveling it down to your preference. Sorry I'm at work now, so I don't have my favorite links here, but do a search for "finger of the mountain" on google, and you should find tips about this.

Also note that the amount of magicka it requires depends on your destruction skill, like with all spells and their respective schools.

Olav is correct, its a bug and even if you do get your destruction to 100 and lower the spells cost it still costs about 700 magicka. If you do that quest at too high a lvl you get a useless spell (as I did and you obviously did too). And once again Olav mentioned a lower lvl character finishing the quest yeilds a castable spell.

It's part of one of the Mages guild initiation quests. It has two parts.

Well, this is the spoiler section, so you can be more specific. wink.gif

It's the recommendation quest in Chorrol, where you will have to find the ''Finger of the Mountain'' book. Then you have two choices: To give the book to Argonian who will write you your recommendation right away, or a woman who dislikes the mage's guild. Don't give the book to Argonian. Instead, the woman will provide you with instructions to get yourself a powerfull spell, called ''Finger of the Mountain''.
To get the recommendation later, you will just have to steal the book back from her. smile.gif

But as Olav said, the spell is leveled so it isn't very useful. kvright.gif

Yes, but perhaps my fellow Norwegian prefers to just been given a hint, and then ask for more help if he's still stuck. This is the way I prefer it... smile.gif

Well, there is a good chance that he breakes the quest by giving the book to the Argonian. It would make more sence to give the book for recommendation, then to some crazy woman seeking revenge on the mage's guild, right?
If he gives the book to Argonian and then asks for your help, then what? biggrin.gif

Isn't there a chance to complete both quests no matter who you give the book to? I think I read that somewhere.

- If you give it to the Argonian first you're asked to take it back by the Mages guild

- If you give it to the Mages guild first you are asked to take it back by the Argonian - if you speak to her?

So whatever you do you can still get everything out of this quest?

Not sure about this, but that was my impression. Anyway like you say it's not that important since the spell is mostly useless, and you can make your own spells anyway if you complete the Mages guild recommendation quests or buy the Wizard Tower mod...

That's true.

Or download some of fan-made mods. (PC only)
Like Mountain Tower. Good stuff.

You can complete the full Fingers of the Mountain quest by giving the book to the woman first. Then go to the Argonian in the mages guild and tell him you gave it to her. He'll order you to steal it back. This way you get the spell and the recommendation.

Rhumor was correct - you can get both the spell and the recommendation. In relation to its effectivess, i got it at lvl 2 and for the cost (7) you get a spell that does 6pts of damage over an area. not much, but when your broke and need to fight fire resistant creatures (like everything in the silly oblivion gates) it comes in handy. and with its casting speed you can hit them 3-4 times before they reach you. It came in handy for me, anyways biggrin.gif

Of course i play on the 360, so mods are out of the question for me, and i usualy role play rather than power-level, and gold is hard to come by so spells arent a dime a dozen. so any extra AOE spell i can grab comes in handy
