I'm currently listening to some classic Anthrax. Specifically the song, Medusa. It was this song, as well as Madhouse, that got me interested in Anthrax. I have to say they're my favourite thrash band just because their vocallist actually sings! They're not always so serious either, the songs are actually fun. Heck, just check out their rap song, I'm the Man, hilarious!

Megadeth is an easy second place for thrash bands, I'm not a huge Metallica fan, meh.

My complaint with Kiss and Twisted Sister and the like is that they're just one big gimmick after another.

Anyway, listening to some '80s that I actually like. Revolution Calling by none other than Queensryche.

I think what separates bands like Queensryche from the ones I don't like such as Kiss and Twisted Sister is the fact that they aren't into promoting the same three things useless rebellion, sex, and drugs. I mean, what separates us from animals here? Admittedly, Queensryche does mention those things, but not in a glamorous light.

Yeh you are right Danny about bands who seem to condone drug use. I always had trouble with song lyrics like Cocaine, Casey Jones and even my beloved Van Halen's Runnin' with the Devil. Some seem too seriously recommending this cop-out way of life.

But big, blustery histronic productions like Alice and Twisted and Kiss, I always took to be tongue in cheek - cause it's so obviously overblown. Kinda see them like Marx Brothers of Rock.

Hmm, now you've got me rethinking their messages.

Animals do drugs?! IPB Image Ok, maybe you are talking about The Animals? I also don't think animals are into 'useless rebellion' smile.gif

Anyway, it's a lazy saturday morning, and that's as good a time as any for some Massive Attack mix from '94, played on the Beeb Radio 1s Essential Mix. It's a pretty wild mix, let me tell you. Just what the doctor ordered!

Cool ... stargelman's kicked back rockin' in Saturday morning and here in Florida it's still Friday night. Well, before daylight Saturday, as we furiously game in the dawn as usual. Don't know if the sun'd know when to come up if it weren't for our windows reflecting the computers glow for him to judge time.

My worktime music listening for the weekend is an eclectic mix of Devin Townsend, Soilwork, Rammstein, Three Days Grace, Isis, Hurt, Voivod, and Danko Jones. It's gonna be a fun 7 hours!

Ding-dangity, Metal ... you are made in the shade at work! Jealous. Internet, Chorrol and great tunes. Where DO you work again??

I like Ramstein and Isis alot, haven't heard of the others. Think I'll search for em at MySpace videos. I'm wondering if Devin Townsend is any relation to Pete Townsend of the Who? Son perhaps? maybe I'll Google that too. I love Saturdays when I can kick around and explore things.

OMSL - Oh MY Sweet Lord!! I listened to Canon Rock by FunTwo so many times yesterday that it was REVERBERATING in my head as I tried to go to sleep last night...not easy song to drowse off to, much better dawnbreaker! Gotta lay off those cannons some!! nono.gif

I know Devin Townsend is a Canadian based in British Columbia. I don't think he's a son to Pete Townsend though, he isn't a young guy, likely late 30s or early 40s. He's got graying hair so that's only a guess.

He's a bit of a busy guy, over the last 10 years he's either produced or recorded 20 albums. He's done vocals for some of Steve Vai's projects but lately he either releases albums from his "extreme" metal band, Strapping Young Lad, or his more progressive metal band, The Devin Townsend Band. Today I decided to go with the progressive metal album, which is simply fantastic, just because some of the songs are just so odd. So if you like different sounding music, I'd go with The Devin Townsend Band, and for the not so faint of heart, Strapping Young Lad (it took me a little while to appreciate his vocals for some of his songs with his SYL band, but now I adore the layering and the range of his vocals, it's astounding!).

Oh yea, and I work at a drive-thru for a bottled water/ softener salt company, Culligan. And since it's the weekend, I'm the only person in my section of the building so I can listen to what I want to on the CD player. And computer with internet access kills the boring time waiting for customers to drive up. It's rainy today too so business has been slow. Free moolah basically!

Free moolah indeed ... sweet! And free sweet water for me because that is the kind of water we have in our cooler at work. So you are the Hey Culligan Man! Always wondered at his true identity.

Well, here is Devin Townsend in the virtual flesh:
IPB Image

What a babe! Sure know how to build em in Canada!! He looks like a guy I used to date in Wyoming who was half-Swedish/half-Sioux. However, I cannot hear his music as yet because one site I found was in German and the other had the link pages to bio and songs broken. So I'll keep looking, but nothing jumped out saying Pete Townsend - so he's probably not related.

Hmmm... If that's Devin Townsend, then he was awfully young in that picture, this is a picture I scanned from one of Devin Townsend's CDs, this one is with his band Strapping Young Lad, sorry about it being sideways tongue.gif

Devin is the dude in the front. And if you're looking for music by him check out www.hevydevy.com (well at least a few streams of music videos...)

Yes, its the same guy. I picked the young picture when I saw that one, but I also took screenies of 2 other pics where he is going bald on top, but still with the flowing mane on sides and back. I'll link them up at Photobucket ... gimme a minute here....

Well, actually in this ONE he is bald

Again, I went for a younger ... middle/ageish shot

And then one so young, if I didn't know better I'd say it was the Nuge

I did read at one site that he played backup for Joe Satriani at some time ...

My music taste has changed since my wonderful foray into the world of having no home. I stayed with a lot of people and was introduced to a lot of good music. Right now I'm listening to the World/Inferno Friendship Society's "Just the Best Party", but I've been listening to a lot of The Faint, Aquabats, and ...Music Video? (that last one was the band's name).

Just got Ronnie James Dio's first self titled album, Holy Diver. I gotta say, it rocks so FREAKING HARD! This is classic metal that just bites. 1983 was a good year, I think Priest's "Defenders of the Faith" came out then as well. So far Invisible, Rainbow in the Dark, and Holy Diver are the prime songs from my few first listens. But it's all excellent music. Dio's voice is amazing!

Blood and Thunder by Mastodon.

Who knew you could write heavy metal music about Moby thermos? This album is crazy good, and ultra riffy. The song that easily stands out is the "epic" Heart's Alive. While all the songs on the album are under 5 minutes, this one is over 13! And it goes by quickly, with some nice melodic moments within the chaos.

Leviathan was a great album and hopefully Blood Mountain, which is coming out this year, will be just as great.

So I picked up the new Maiden album A Matter of Life and Death after work today. (it was convientiently located where I work) And surprisingly enough, unlike most old bands throwing out new albums, it doesn't suck. In fact, I find it to be one of my favorites. Well, it obviously won't compare to some of the earlier stuff like Piece of Mind, but it's still a good one.

That sounds like a good recommendation to me, Danny. Haven't been listening much to music or tv lately. I watch sex n the city at midnight and one, and that's about it for the media. Except for computer games nonstop, of course.

If you wanna check out an excellent "comeback" album, Judas Priest's "Angel of Retribution" is like is right up there. Original lineup (excluding the drummer since they've gone through like a bunch, their current one is the most talented on though), and that hasn't happen since 1990 when Halford left the band.

The whole CD is solid, if you don't mind a few cheesey lyrics, mainly found in the 13 minute song about the Lochness monster. Judas is Rising, Deal With the Devil, and the ballad, Angel, are the songs I would suggest you give a shot at listening to.
