Well, the bad storms bypassed us, Knoxville went ahead with their fireworks display because it was all done remotely (our area didn't have theirs, but Knoxville went all out this year for a change).

When the thunder was rumbling outside I unplugged everything, and (luckily) it bypassed us to the Northwest. So I went to plug back up and one prong of my plug was gone. It was inside the outlet still.

I didn't want to wait till my husband got up to see if it was safe that way, so plugged the rest of the plug back in and tried to boot up the PC.

It turned on weird, wouldn't boot up. When it finally did half my desktop was gone - literally gone, there is 40 gig of stuff I had on there missing from my hard drive. The Icons were all bunched in an upper corner. I tried rebooting and the icons became giant sized. Turns out I had a virus.

So I cleaned the virus and did maintenance on my PC - took almost all day yesterday for the maintenance. Icons still messed up. Found out the virus had messed with my resolution settings - reset it and rebooted.

Finally everything working this morning, and the storms they predicted for the 4th finally hit us. Had to unplug again. URK!

Anyway, we just got a break in the weather and I booted back up. My account on here wasn't open, had to dig up my password to log on. Now it is starting to rain again.

This can't be my week, I am about to pull my hair out!

I need to back up my documents/mods/and pictures to make sure I don't lose anything, but other than that I don't care what I lose. (haven't done it yet, just so glad to be on here!)

Hello Chorrol world, I am BACK!

Yeah, those weather people need to learn how to read their radar or something. The week prior they said we'd have clear beautiful days and we had the worst storms of the year so far.

Then they scare the living hell out of everyone predicting terrible storms - get everyone cancelling their 4th of July celebrations - and we got nothing but a steady rain and some flooding!

The thunder came close to us on the Northwest side, but didn't make it to us. We never had a bad wind, just a steady downpour - they terrified the whole state out of celebrating the 4th for nothing!

So glad to have you back mALX! What a crappy few days it's been for you.

Also, I don't believe the forecast farther out than 24 hours.

I should have known better than to let them scare me like that, but after those bad storms we had the week or so before I was trigger happy, lol.

@ Thank you all for the well wishes before and warm welcome back!

Happy for you Liz! Sound's like that dude's getting his just desserts. Or Karma, or whatever.

Found out recently that the one patient I was talking about a couple of weeks ago, did pass away last week. Sad, and it was a bit unexpected, as the guy was more or less pretty healthy. He could still walk, and was fully there. I only had him a handful of times, but we did bond very quickly.

He and I would have deep, philosophical discussion at four in the morning. His favorite concept was apparently: "What is Reality?" Something I've been pondering for years.

The drive itself was under twenty minutes, but I would stick around his center for another good 10-15 minutes to finish our conversations, and he seemed to be appreciative, as I certainly was to have another kindred spirit that valued philosophy. I'm unaware of the details of his passing, but I hope that he went peacefully.

I know also, that he was well loved if the families reaction was any indication. When we went to pick him up, his wife was deeply saddened, and there were many cars in the driveway and street around his place, even though it was only a few hours earlier that she found him. I don't mean that in a way to impart sadness, but rather the amount of people who cared about him and showed up at a moments notice.

Rest well my friend. We'll pick up our conversation where we left off someday.

I'm so sorry to hear this man didn't make it, knew you felt a strong connection to him and his wife. Like you, I hope his passing was a peaceful one. Some people are just meant to touch other people's lives, it sounds like he was one of these.

** Good luck on your trip, and enjoy your friend!

Another joy is that I can still see and hear him- doing what he loved. A local TV station did a series that started out being about Cades Cove, but which grew into much more. Dad was asked to do some of the earliest episodes and then was invited back several times. The shows still air and better yet, are available on VHS and DVD. So I get a chance to see him being himself- teaching, talking, his eyes gleaming with pleasure as he explains how the mountains and the coves were formed.

It is called the Heartland Series, hosted by Bill Landry. I did a bit of googling and did not find any clips on line.

Here is a quick sketch about Dad from the book Bill wrote about doing the series:

"[He] was an expert in the broad field of geology. He always smoked a pipe. No matter what we were talking about or where we were, when it was time to shoot, he'd just put that pipe in his pocket. Oftentimes, we'd smell smoke and cloth burning, and we'd see where his pipe had burned a hole in his pants or singed his shirt below his belt or worse. He didn't care. What a cool dude [he] was. We loved him.

"Whatever he said, you could take to the bank. I never remember him doing a second take unless, of course, I screwed up. He was great on cameral. Not just good, I mean great- Richard Attenborough great!"

He was my dad, so of course I think highly of him. But to see someone else write those words...

What a wonderful tribute to your father Bill made! That was so nice that your father made such a strong impression of all the thousands of people he must have had on his show! Awesome, Treydoggie!

QUOTE(Grits @ Jul 4 2013, 10:42 PM) *

It turned out to be a sunny day in Grits world after all. Spent a few hours by someone elses pool, grilled burgers, caught some fireworks on the way home. Then watched more fireworks from the driveway for about half an hour since it seems that all of our neighbors are pyromaniacs.

I got some more details about the cancelled party. These folks have a blowout every year in their gigantic yard. They live way out in the country next to what used to be a crayfish farm. Or crawfish depending on your origin. (Ive noticed all of the ponds but never knew their original purpose.) Well anyway it seems that when the crayfish farmer moved on he left the critters behind or maybe they escaped. How they got loose is a matter of speculation. The point is that under pretty much the friends entire property are thousands and thousands of crayfish burrows.

This is not usually a problem. I mean, Ive spent many happy hours there (some sprawled in the grass) and never noticed a thing. But theres been a lot of rain lately, and a lot of flooding. I guess the little guys climb out and go looking for love when their burrows flood. That would be something to see.

BWAAHAA! I really think those weathermen were just flexing their muscles, trying to prove they could disrupt a major holiday by scaring us, lol.

I had to find something apropos to go with that story, lol.

Hope everyone's Fourth was Awesome (mine wasn't, lol).

What a few people on here already know is that (despite fireworks are illegal here) our neighborhood gets into a battle every 4th for the best fireworks display.

My husband loads up on an armory full of fireworks and Budweiser beer and sets up in our yard directly across from where our neighbors behind set up their display - about 2 acres between them. The neighboring Cop on the corner (about 7 acres away) has joined the competition, and has tried to outdo us - he was getting close last year to being in the running.

Well, my husband hits the beers plenty before darkness falls and he can start setting off these bags and bags full of rockets (etc) he gets. Drinking beer and setting up fireworks displays is not the best combination, (or my husband is just uncoordinated with gunpowder, not sure which) - and every year something happens.

One year he thought up trying to set off a bottle rocket in an empty Budweiser can. The impact tipped the can over and all our guests were chased through the yard by the bottle rocket.

One year he set off a rocket and tripped over the board, knocking the trajectory so it nose-dived into the neighbors roof and then went "KABOOM!" The fireworks were like a giant sparkler coming out the ass end of the rocket. The roof was damp, (thank goodness), but the next day we could see the bright orange body of the rocket wedged neck deep in the man's roof. We had to pay repairs.

Another year my husband had the bright idea of using a sparkler to look inside a huge bag of fireworks and see what was in it. We could hear our neighbor in the back laughing when the bag caught on fire and fireworks started blowing in every direction. Dogs were barking and yelping, running for shelter; cats inside and out were getting under cover.

We still have holes in our siding all down that side of the house, and a dent in the shower where a rocket is still stuck in the wall on that side of the house. I was afraid the house would burn to the ground.

So when the weathermen cancel 4th of July, they are killing our neighborhood's entertainment for the year - my husband's big show, lol.

My husband didn't buy yet, since they said everything was going to be canceled till the 13th. The Cop didn't either, but the neighbor behind us did and was all by himself in the contest. We enjoyed it from the dry of our living room while he and his family got soaked. It wasn't one of his best years, I think he held out when he saw Bob wasn't participating. Kind of kills the fun when the competition drops out and you are just entertaining them for free, lol. We're waiting to see if he yanks them back out on the 13th, lol.
