I keep a sharpie in my backpack for writing labels by hand. I didn't know they made hawks too! wink.gif

QUOTE(Grits @ Jun 9 2014, 08:14 AM) *

It was a wild week in Grits world but now I’m on the other side of it. Although there is one critical issue to resolve. Last night while I was relaxing (finally!) on the porch with an appropriate beverage, a hawk swooped down and murdered our resident chipmunk right before my eyes. That’s not the problem, he was just doing what hawks do. BUT in my surprise and subsequent surprised juggling of glass and napkin I failed to identify him. It was not a red-tail and it was not one of the red-shouldered hawks from across the street. My best guess is a Cooper’s hawk, but he could have been a sharpie. He had a long tail. Argh! This is still bugging me.

"Cooper’s hawks may also regularly take small rodents and mammals, though this is rare for sharp-shinned hawks." - suggests your best guess is probably the right one.

It will give me peace of mind to decide it was a Cooper’s. Sharp-shinned would be a new one for my back yard, and a guess after a single, brief, slightly cocktail-addled viewing is not very reliable.

In related rodent news, while stalking the feeder (through the kitchen window) this morning I have now witnessed two more chipmunks cavorting in the grass. So it did not get the single bachelor chipmunk as I imagined. In a way I suppose it missed two. Yikes. One chipmunk is cute, a family is a potential disaster. Come back, hungry hawk!

I just logged in to the Nexus site and discovered a notification about a hack that occurred there recently. Apparently someone gained access to a staff account and was able to switch a number of popular files with malicious ones. There is a notice of what occurred here http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/news/12350/? with a list of the files affected. If you recently downloaded one of them you might want to remove it and scan your system thoroughly. I'll post this message in all the relevant forums so everyone knows about the incident.

Come back, hungry hawk!

It quite likely will, if it thinks it found a good spot for hunting. Have a camera handy for next time!

I was just over at the Nexus site and this was front page news on both the Oblivion and Skyrim sites. For Oblivion, OCO 2 was replaced with a malware file; on Skyrim it was SkyUI and I think SkyHair. There was a couple of others for Fallout, too. The article does a good job explaining what happened, what the malware is and does, and what was done to neutralize it. So long story short, if you downloaded a suspect file sometime within a very narrow time frame it would be best to run a virus scan and remove the file without opening or installing it.

I’m heading into a week of uncertain internet. I’ll be reading on my phone but possibly not posting. (That actually happens a lot.) Anyway I’m hoping to be awed and amazed and experience full service all week. We’ll see.

I agree with KC. You don't need an Independence Day to have a BBQ!

Enjoy!

Fireworks down on the Las Vegas Strip were nice last night, but the magnificent part was Mother Nature providing a grand finale. She unleashed a fantastic show of lightning that erupted into a sudden thunderstorm. Great timing! Happily, I was up on my mountain looking down on all of it and not caught in the weather.

KC - That is so neat! Flying can be great fun. smile.gif

It was fun, steering was a combination of using a little roll and then using the rudder to bring the nose around. The aircraft was very small so you could feel the fluctuations in the air going around you. smile.gif

I would like to try out a plane too smile.gif I have 50 hours in a helicopter but you can´t do the same maneuvers in one of those. While I prefer the copter because of its versatility, flying upside down on higher altitude and speed would be so much fun! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
