I had another 'better' hearing day yesterday. In celebration I watched/heard what has become my favorite rendition of Beethoven's 'Les Adieux' sonata, a live filming of Ronald Brautigam, playing a fine sounding fortepiano (as opposed to a modern grand piano). Later on I listened to disc two of my SACD set of the complete Beethoven piano sonatas, again performed by mr Brautigam. This disc contains sonatas No's 4 thru 7. Of these No.7 is my overall pick of the litter, though I'm also quite taken by the very brief closing presto of No.6, heard here performed by Daniel Barenboim (on modern piano).
Also heard/watched, a recital/lecture on 'Les Adieux'. No, not the one by Andras Schiff. I found the lecture portion interesting, but was not in sympathy with the lecturer's performance of the work itself. -------------------- |

During supper tonight and continuing on afterward I listened to disc 3 of Brautigam's Beethoven piano sonata set. It contains sonatas 8-11, those being Op.13 ("Pathetique"), Op.14 No.1 & No.2, and Op.22. The first and last are particular favorites. Op.22 is one of the ones I did not know at all until acquiring the Brautigam SACD set last year. Its second movement in particular seems ideally suited to the sound of Brautigam's fortepiano.

Was in the mood for the Archduke, which I'd not listened to in some years. None of the several YouTube offerings I first sampled quite did it for me, nice as a couple were. Then I found a recording by the Castle Trio on period instruments. I like it so well I immediately ordered what I hope is the exact recording on CD off Amazon. (I also pre-ordered a soon to be released recording of two Beethoven violin sonatas on period instruments.)

The remakes I like best are ones where a band takes an old song and changes it up a little to match their own style. Like by changing the genre of the song or the instruments. So even though it is an old song, it sounds new and different. I like the Ataris and MXPX remakes because they took soft rock ballads and made them into blistering alternative/punk anthems.
