No armor and a two-handed weapon is not as bad as it sounds. Once you master the fine art of keeping your opponents within reach of your weapon and staying out of reach of theirs, and learning to time your bashes to stagger them, you can go through most melee fights without ever being hit. The real trouble is from archers. I was going to say mages as well, but armor does not really help against them anyway.

Watch Persephone take on the bandits of Helgen. Of the first two bandits, only one hit her once, and that was just with a shield bash. Otherwise she completely controlled the fight. When she took out the Dark Brotherhood, the first guy she fought likewise never laid a glove on her thanks to her use of bashes at just the right moments.
