Ah, A new Jerric chapter that I don't have to come to months after the fact!

The morning run and steam would serve as the perfect introduction to Jerric and his world for anyone joining the story with this chapter. The comparing of scars and tatoos reminded me of the classic scene from Jaws, and is just as effective. Like SubRosa I loved the excellent 'squealing like an imperial' line.

Just one small nit:

QUOTE
Jerric decided he could get away with one more look. Now thats a bush, he thought. Thank you, Mother Kyne.

This is a perfect invocation!

QUOTE
Where they walked birds still sang of cold spring and Kyne smiled down through quickening branches.

This one doesn't work quite as well. The sentence structure is fantastic, and the imagery is downright poetic. But the 'quickening branches' just don't give us enough evidence of Kyne smiling. It occurs to me that if you were denoting Kyne's smile as the play of cold spring wind through those branches then the passage does work... albeit subtly (which, I admit, may have been the point). However, the 'smile' of nature makes me think you were referring more to Magnus tyhan Kyne. Just a thought.

Gaaaah, you put up a chapter that I missed seeing! I still can't read, but seeing the screenshots of Jerric married and all the new characters tells me I am missing a lot in the lives of Jerric and Darnand! I can still remember his beginning chapters; and the first time an enemy used Frenzy on him in a dungeon and he attacked Darnand and Lildereth !!!! I love your characters and your writing, really miss it (and them) a lot.

My husband and son won't read Fics to me; and the voice software I use on my computer is really hard to understand and robotic sounding - trying to use it for reading a story is impossible. But I wanted you to know I'll always be a fan of Jerric's story, and I am really loving seeing him in Tamriel (ESO).

You've improved a lot then, given how much you manage to read and write for the ESO section... tongue.gif biggrin.gif ...

Aaaamywho...

GRITSEH!!!... biggrin.gif ...

Very very much enjoyed this chapter...

The whole comparing battle scars thing was pretty cool...I also loved the way that getting nekkid with relative strangers was no problem, but the talking about stuff got increasingly uncomfortable for Jerric... laugh.gif ...

I had to go get me own breakfast after reading that list of food...We're on our way out for a trip today and I was tempted to write out that list for McWife to pack for me too... biggrin.gif ...

Wonderfully done that!...

Properly loved this whole chapter, and it's nice to be back and delving (to as much a degree as ma brain can handle anyways) into the fan-fics again...

Awesome!!!...

Nice one!!...

*Applauds heartily*...

Previously: Bruma. Jerric left on the Fighters Guild Echo Cave patrol with Kjestrid, Gjaever, and Shamir-do intending to leave the group near Rielle and go to his meeting at Cloud Ruler Temple. On the way they found a Gate to Oblivion.

ghastley: Maybe Kjestrids butt scar was a mudcrab bite and she came up with a better story. biggrin.gif Thanks for spotting that nit, I fixed it.

haute ecole rider: Jerric is a big fan of nude Bosmeri women. And he says that hes the horse! tongue.gif

Acadian: The breakfast was for you as much as for the FG its been too long since the last meal! Thank you for drawing attention to that moment between Jerric and Jaan. That was the highpoint of the episode for me, even with naked Nords everywhere. I got to learn a little about snowshoes for this one. Like Jerric, Ive never worn a pair. Thank you, Acadian!

Darkness Eternal: Thank you for the welcome back, DE! Its been too long since I focused on this story. I still enjoy reading back through those roleplays. I made sure I read up on Cyrodiil steam rooms before I wrote this, because I was sure you would know about them!

Kazaera: My writing project last November was the first part of Jerrics familys Skyrim origin story. I have to wrap up Jerrics colossal Oblivion story first, but his parents (much shorter) story is on the way. Im glad that the culture clash between Jerric and the northern Nords rings true for you. Jerric notices a lot but ponders very little, so I always wonder if things are coming across. Thank you, Kazaera!

SubRosa: Hogs balls, yikes! laugh.gif It is indeed always rats with the Fighters Guild. I couldnt resist carrying that tradition into Kjestrids first FG job. Maybe Kjestrid knows a feather charm for her chest. Time will tell. tongue.gif Thank you, SubRosa!

Destri: That Jaws scene is one of my favorite bonding scenes ever, especially the moment when Brody decides not to show off his appendix scar. biggrin.gif I agree about not invoking Kyne in the second passage. I meant that the pleasant early spring breeze and clear skies indicated Kynes enjoyment of the seasons new life. Jerric thinks of Kyne as dwelling in the sky more than being the sky and the weather as her mood. He is no theologian, but his concept of Magnus is sort of beyond while Kyne is in his mind very connected to his everyday existence. But I think its too soon after the first mention for someone who is not very religious, even though being in Bruma reminds him of his Nord-ness. Im still pondering a different way to put it. Thank you, Destri!

mALX: Jerric is still single, so you may not have missed as much as you thought. Was it Valdis Skyrim wedding pictures that you saw? She is fifteen in this story, half Jerrics age. In her Skyrim game shes married to Erik the Slayer. Thanks, mALX!

McBadgere: Im glad you picked up on Jerrics Nordic ease with nudity at the same time he struggled with keeping up his deception. Jerric has a blended cultural background, but some of his attitudes are pure Nord. Hes usually only surrounded by Nords when hes with family. Being around more Nords than usual makes Jerric feel more like who he is at the same time he has to remember to pretend to be who hes not. Bruma is bringing up mixed emotions. Thank you, McB!

Next: The Gate.

Chapter 17: Bruma, Part Ten

As the sunlight failed, the noise increased. Grey clouds made a ceiling not far above the trees, lit from below by the howling Gate and from within by flashes of lightning. Jerric felt his chest compress. That smell His eyes burned with memory. This time the fume held a thin note of pine. Jagged stumps stuck out of the snow near the Gate, and splintered timbers poked out of the drifts all around. He stepped carefully.

Two Nords in furs stood guard within a circle of trampled snow. A third figure lay dead, arms crossed over her chest. A shattered shield rested on her belly. Two clannfears and a dremora sprawled in dark stains nearby.

Kjestrid called to Jerric, Stay back. She moved forward with Shamir-do at her side. The Khajiits nocked arrow pointed at the ground.

Gjaever stepped up to Jerrics right.

Those kids arent the enemy, Jerric said. He shrugged off his pack and began to sort his gear.

Kjestrid beckoned the two back to Gjaever and Jerric. The Gates whine nearly drowned out her words. Thursten Long-Eye, she said to the shorter one. Report.

Jerric estimated Thursten was yet in his teens. The lads eyes were red and running, but his raised voice sounded firm. We found it this morning. Hard to say how long ago. The sun was well up over the ridge. We snuck up and shot those two beasts, but the man thing wouldnt go down. It killed Jytte when she got too close. Marsten broke its knee. When we were done Jytte was already gone.

Wheres Marsten now?

Thursten hawked out a wad of phlegm. Went to put the marker out and warn the village.

Jerric had heard enough. Give me all of your water. Dont let anyone else in after I go through. It may take three or four days on this side, but Im going to close this Gate. Anyone who goes in after me will get stuck in there when it closes. Probably.

We dont have the skins to carry four days worth of water, Kjestrid told him.

Time is different there, Jerric said. Wont feel like more than a day or so to me on the other side. Come on, hand them over. Ill take your food, too. Everything I wont have to cook.

Will the other side be guarded? Kjestrid asked.

Maybe. Sometimes. Jerric took the opportunity to empty his bladder. Gjaever did the same.

Go back and report, Kjestrid told Shamir-do. The Khajiit executed a neat turn and started back the way they had come.

Wait, Jerric said.

Wait! Kjestrid called to Shamir-do. She glanced at Gjaever and then back at Jerric. Go ahead.

Jerric sorted out his words while he finished buckling.

I can reach Darnand. With my mind. With magic. Whats your message?

Kjestrid looked like she was arguing with herself.

Jerric snorted. If you dont trust my friend, send your cat. Its the same to me.

Tell him to find Asgerd, Kjestrid said. Shell coordinate our support. Make sure he doesnt fetch it up. She turned to the villagers. You two move the bodies out of sight and take cover. If something comes out that you cant kill, then dont die trying. Thursten, you track it. Svaknar, you keep watch. Like he said, no one else goes through after us.

Theres no support for this, Jerric told Kjestrid. I go in and I might come out, thats it. Theres no us. If you charge in there like youre the Legion, you get noticed and die. Ive seen it.

Thursten and Svaknar began carrying out their orders. Shamir-do filled his canteen from one handed to him by the militia members.

Thanks, Jerric said to him, reaching to take the water.

Khajiit will fill this ones skins next, Shamir-do said. He hung his own from the loop on his pack.

No way, said Jerric. Youll make too much noise. Im not taking you in there with me.

Hah! said Kjestrid. We all hunt. Youre the one who sounds like a tin peddler.

Jerric noted that even the mountainous Gjaever wore the type of fur and leather protection approved of by Lildereth. He was the only one in plate and mail.

You should help them hold this side, Jerric said. And if you cant hold it, make sure that Bruma is warned.

Kjestrid was busy with her gear. She spoke without looking up. Theres no discussion.

I dont want to see these people die. He tried another approach. If you fall in there, thats where youll stay. I wont drag you out. I dont know whatll happen to your soul. I dont even know if thats Dagons realm. It could be anywhere.

Aye, Kjestrid shot back. It could be the Hunting Grounds or Moonshadow, or maybe just some wizards tower. Theres a portal in Niben Bay they say leads to the realm of Madness, but who knows? I can tell you this, though. I know my orders. Well be getting you out alive, Kjellingsson of Anvil. Are you ready yet, or do you want to run your mouth some more?

Kjestrids brows were drawn down and her jaw stuck out. Jerric suspected she was trying to keep her teeth from chattering.

All right, said Jerric. But dump your extra gear. We wont need snowshoes on bare rock and sand, and well surely need to run.

Well take them, Kjestrid said. Unless theres a general goods outfit on the other side theres no such thing as extra. Carry your weight, Anvil.

Jerric thought of the times he could have used a splint or a spare set of laces. He finished securing his gear by lashing the snowshoes to his pack. Im going to tell Darnand whats going on. What should I say about, uh, our location?

Were two miles east of the Maiden Spring trail, right below the first ridge. Theyll find it. Tell him to say ragged to Asgerd. Otherwise they wont take him seriously.

Mage, Shamir-do explained.

Make sure he informs the Fighters Guild first, Kjestrid said. They know what to do.

No one knows what to do, thought Jerric. Thats why youre listening to me.

It took several moments to get Darnands attention. Jerric broke off the contact as soon as the Breton repeated his message. This was no time to think about what he could lose.

Ill go in first, he told them. Just walk into the portal and youll come out the other side in the Deadlands. It looks like fire but it doesnt burn. Duck your chin and look at your feet or you wont be able to see for a few moments. Move to the side and get low once youre through. Unless you see me killing something. Ha. Uh, and there might be a drop, so be ready for it. He took a swig of Jerrics Juice and stepped forward. Anticipation prickled over his skin.

Gjaever yanked him back as if he weighed no more than Darnand.

Jerric gave him a shove as soon as he could pull loose. Put your hands on me again, snowback!

Save it, Kjestrid said. Shamir-do will go first. Then Anvil and me, then Gjaever. Can we return the same way we entered? The last was directed at Jerric.

Thats how it worked before. Jerric pushed his anger back into its place. Keep your skitt together.

Kjestrid nodded to Shamir-do. The Khajiit drew his blades before he vanished into the portal.

The Gates whine made Jerrics teeth ache. He dropped a knee to the ground and closed his eyes, reaching for that place inside that was calm because it was already over. Akatosh, lend me your strength. Shor, call me home.

How long should we wait? Kjestrid asked.

We go now, said Jerric.

Kjestrid blew out a breath. Three days for one, right? We wait.

When Shamir-do returned his ears were flat and his tail bushed like bottle brush. Cold, he called out.

The Khajiit looked unharmed. Jerric didnt wait for Kjestrids command. He strode past Shamir-do and into the blinding Gate.

Cold air stung his face and lungs. Jerric coughed out his first breath in surprise. Grey clouds circled here, too. The light was wrong. So was the footing. What the hells is this?

This one is pleased to have snowshoes, Shamir-do said, his voice raised over the Gates noise. The others had joined him.

Jerric kicked at the ground. Pale grey powder gusted around his ankles, blown by a fitful wind. It wasnt quite snow, but it wasnt ash either. The land sloped away from the Gate on their side, but rocky hills rose above it at the rear. Dust clouded the near distance. Or was it fog? Even the smell here was different. Jerric moved down the hill away from the Gate until the shriek and glare didnt overwhelm his senses.

All right, Kjestrid said. Cold, not hot. What are we looking for?

A tower, said Jerric. With a column of fire running through the center. The sigil stone that holds the Gate open will be at the top of the tower. When we take it the column will collapse. Well ride the fire back out to county Bruma.

Even Gjaever looked unhappy with that news.

This one does not see a tower, Shamir-do said. The Khajiit crouched down where he could watch the front. Gjaever moved around to the rear.

Well? Kjestrid asked.

Give me a moment, said Jerric.

Kjestrid spoke immediately. Well stay within sight of the Gate. If we dont see a tower at the limit, were going back through.

Deal, Jerric said. You can go back through.

Kjestrid had managed to get uphill. She looked Jerric straight in the eyes. Its not a deal. Thats what were doing. She made a gesture that meant look around first. Jerric walked back up the hill to the Gates far side and climbed to the top of the rocks. Gjaever stayed with him.

The ground dropped away here as well, covered in the same loose powder. Down below it seemed that fog filled the hollows, but it could be blowing grit. Jerric yanked off a gauntlet and sifted some across his fingers. It was dry and very cold. I think this is snow.

Gjaevers shoulders heaved, but the Gate drowned out whatever noise he might have made.

Salij, Kjestrid agreed. Its so cold its like sand. We dont get this in Bruma.

Nor in Corinthe, said Shamir-do. Khajiit sees no tower. Khajiit sees only salij.

Jerric scraped the snow until he uncovered hard ground. Not the same, he muttered. No fire in the ground. No lava, no Not the same. How..?

Which way? asked Kjestrid. If were not going back we get moving.

Jerric looked across the low hills, watching for movement. The Gate did not seem to be guarded. That didnt mean it wasnt.

That way, he said, picking a direction. He started down the hill, sliding his brass and pearl life detection ring onto his finger.

Pink glows flared to life at ground level all around them. Jerric halted, arms spread out at his sides. Oh, skitt.

What is it? Kjestrid called. She drew her long blade.

I have no fetching idea. Its He made a gesture. A sea of life signs. Or maybe just one. Big. Everywhere. Look. He handed Kjestrid his ring.

Shamir-do had his sword in hand. He probed the ground with its point.

Gjaever made a yelp from the rear.

Dammit! cried Kjestrid. Pick your feet up!

Jerric moved one foot, but then the other seemed frozen to the ground. He yanked it up with a crack and then the first one was stuck again. He started quick-stepping back and forth in place.

Back through the Gate! Kjestrid called. Move it!

Jerric took off running in the direction he had chosen. Shoot me if you like. The surface of the snow began to shift as he ran. At first he thought it was a reaction from his footsteps. Then he realized a vibration was coming from the ground.

He could hear the others yelling at his back, but he didnt turn to determine their intentions. He felt as if he was rising and falling, too quickly to be progress over crests and valleys of the hills. A familiar feeling became an internal wail.

Waves. Hump me sideways, the ground is making waves.

The waves rose higher and sank less with each undulation. Snow slid back and forth, but mostly toward him and then past. It deepened quickly to knee height, and then to his thighs, tugging his legs as he waded forward.

Kjestrid gave a wordless shout. Jerric turned to see her wave toward a rocky outcrop to their left. Gjaever appeared slogging through the powder at Jerrics right, almost within his reach.

A dry, crunching sound came from the rear, followed by a cascade of sharp pops. They reached the rocks and clambered to the top as the popping became a roar. Jerric turned to see a chasm open at the foot of their ridge. Snow rushed into the gap while powder rose in a cloud. Jerric realized that he had seized Kjestrid and Shamir-dos arms in a protective reflex. Gjaever had Jerrics shoulder in his grip. This time Jerric did not object.

It took only moments for the groundshake to stop. The avalanche became a trickle as the last of the loose surface material rained into the new canyon.

Shors bones, said Kjestrid.

Shamir-do removed his arm from Jerrics fist. He gestured toward the Gate. We could go around to that

The Gate let out a deafening shriek. Orange light flared outward and then drew back into itself until with a mighty whoosh, it went out.

Jerric stared at the black, empty arms reaching like mandibles toward the grey sky.

Gjaevers growl broke the sudden silence. Fikken Orkey, he said.

What a delight to see this continuing!

The Im in charge contest was great fun to listen to. laugh.gif

Neat how Jerric was able to reach out to Darnand.

I guess the first clue of trouble ahead was the bottle-brush tailed Khajiit's shivering return! That had to be very disorienting when Jerric, the veteran gate-closer, found things not to his expectations on the other side of the gate. I confess it occurs that perhaps they found a gate to Skyrim! tongue.gif

Oops. So much for getting back out the way they came in! ohmy.gif

So not only aren't we in Kansas any more, we're not even in Oblivion? Scary!

Cliff-hanger with a freshly-made cliff! Scarier!!

And what are the ubiquitous life-signs? Scariest!!

Are you ready yet, or do you want to run your mouth some more?
I am really liking Kjestrid of the mighty chest. In fact, it is really refreshing to see a Fighters Guild that actually does something, rather than just stand around inside their guildhall like in the game.

It is also great to see Jerric taking charge here. He is the only one with experience at closing gates, and it shows.

Uh oh, looks like we're not in Kansas anymore, or the Deadlands. In wonder where they are? Very neat!

Great that this is continuing.

Jerric shows a thing or two to the newbies. After all, he's no stranger to Oblivion.

But, perhaps, he is a stranger to this place. Cold and grey clouds don't seem to be Dagon's feel, nor colors. No flames, either. A sea of life signs? Hmm. A mystery that will soon be revealed. We can only wait. Anxiously!

Fikken Orkey indeed!

I think I know where the crew has stumbled into, but I have to confess that I'm not quite sure how obscure you've decided to go with this. I can only wait for the mystery to be revealed. This chapter fit together like a perfectly calibrated timepiece, and it started from the opening paragraph (which was fantastic btw).

Kjestrid stole the show with her no nonsense approach to everything, and Shamir-do proves to be a more than able scout. That moment when he comes back through the gate gives us our first clue that something isn't quite right, and was handled so well that I felt the chill as much as he did.

Brrrr.

Ha ha I love this. Since Jerric looks sorta like Curt Cobain I can't help but hear his voice as somewhat mumbly, and he slurs his words just a tad.

Previously: Fighters Guild members Jerric, Kjestrid, Shamir-do, and Gjaever entered a Gate to Oblivion. It is cold there, which was a surprise. While they were discussing matters a canyon opened at their feet and the Gate to Bruma closed.

Acadian: Thank you, Acadian! Jerric should have paid attention to his scout when Shamir-do came shivering back. Lil has taught him better than that! Hes lucky no one gave him a firm poke with those snowshoes he wanted to leave behind.

ghastley: Well, still in Oblivion but not quite as the game shows us. This is the part I meant with almost following the game plot. biggrin.gif Definitely a what the heck moment for Jerric.

SubRosa: Thank you, SubRosa! Jerric made it all those years in his familys company without accepting more responsibility, but now hes run out of co-workers to push forward. Perhaps his slacker days are (mostly) behind him!

Darkness Eternal: Thank you, DE! They will find out some answers now, but not all of them. Jerric is wishing for A Gate-Crashers Guide to the Daedric Realms, lol.

Destri Melarg: Thank you, Destri! Umm, the Fourth Sinus of Takubar? That would have been pretty awesome. What was your idea? Where they are is a different part of a familiar place, though. Ive taken some liberties. tongue.gif What Jerric misses, Im sure Darnand will figure out.

mirocu: Indeed, Jerric is quite well and always adventuring, thank you for asking. Most of his exploits dont get mentioned in the game threads.

Renee: Yep, Jerric tends to mumble, drawl, and slur his words even when hes not been drinking. Hes been accused of sounding half-asleep when he talks. I put a bunch of words in the Darnandex so that I can remember them, including some swear words, lol. In ESO some of the Nords say scat, so I will probably steal that to use here too. Thanks, Renee!

Next: Were not in Tamriel anymore.

(Ive been struggling to find a convention for Jerrics frost atronach Ishckrihk speaking to him. For now, Text in italics with single quotes indicates that Ishckrihk is speaking words in Jerrics thoughts the way he and Darnand do with their summoning/communication spell, and Text with regular quotes indicates sounds or words that Ishckrihk is speaking aloud which everyone can hear. And as always Jerrics thoughts are in italics without any quotes. Please let me know what parts are confusing or if something else would make better sense. Thank you for your patience as we work this out!)

Chapter 17: Bruma, Part Eleven

Jerric leaned over the chasms edge. The bottom was visible as a pale swath, details lost in shadow. He willed an orb of arcane frost to his hand and tossed it into the canyon. The rocky walls opened into a chamber, its limits beyond his visible angle. His improvised light was too faint to identify the shapes on its floor.

This whole thing shows living energy, Kjestrid said. Her voice cracked. Shamir-do, what do you see?

Some things at the bottom, said the Khajiit. Lumps.

Pods? asked Jerric. Do they look like sort of flesh pods?

Shamir-do made a noise of disgust. Jerric took that as agreement.

We need to move, Jerric said to Kjestrid, keeping the command out of his voice. This was no time for a pissing contest. You have the ring.

Kjestrid moved them back to their outcrop. What is this place? she asked Jerric.

I have no idea. Ive seen this before, he said, focusing on the part that was true. A nesting site for spider daedra full of those pods. Ive seen them in chambers like that and scattered above ground in sheltered places. I thought they were egg sacs, but now I know that daedra are made, not, he made a crude gesture, begotten. Ive destroyed some and found scamp and clannfear parts inside, and also bones and clothing. Sometimes the daedra are all the way grown when I cut them out. Small, but ready to fight. They must put mortals into the pods and seed them with their own creatures. Thats how Id wager.

A trap? Kjestrid asked. Draw folk from our world and then drop them down with the pods when the chamber opens?

Khajiit is going to be sick, Shamir-do announced. He quickly proved himself correct.

Not many would come here on purpose, Jerric said. More likely they planned to attack the village and bring those folk back here. Ive seen that, too, and they Well, they take everyone. Could be waiting for tonight when the houses will be full. He spent a moment fighting his stomach while Shamir-do retched and spat. I think these Gates connect with fixed points in Tamriel, but I dont know how close they can get to their target when they open them. The Mythic Dawn, I mean. When they do their ritual with the sigil stone in our world, they might not be very close to where they think they are in this one. Maybe they need someone on this side to help, and the time is off in our world. I dont know, though. Darnand says Daedric scholars that make it in these realms dont tend to come back out and share their work with the likes of us.

Then we need to move, Kjestrid said, echoing Jerrics words. A raiding party could be on its way here. How do we get out?

Uh, said Jerric. He stalled for time to think. Someone closed the Gate. If they were going out why did they shut the door first?

Does it matter? Kjestrid snapped. You can ask your mage when we get home. Lets go.

Perhaps when we stepped upon this ground the chamber opened to receive its meal, Shamir-do said. Perhaps their tower thought its work was complete.

Jerric gave him raised brows.

Khajiit has heard much of those who travel to Moonshadow, Shamir-do said. Portals can have minds of their own.

How, said Kjestrid. Do. We. Get. Out? She continued to turn, searching for life signs in the fog.

Well have to find a sigil tower thats connected to an open Gate, Jerric admitted. Or find one and wait for it to open. The Gate site in County Bruma is guarded now, no one will come back to open it. Waiting here well likely freeze to death long before the food runs out.

This one does not see a tower, Shamir-do hissed. This one does not see an open Gate. This one sees no water, no food, no way out. The land is frozen and dead! Shamir agreed to guard the Kjellingsson, but Khajiit does not wish to die here for that one!

Kjestrid gave Gjaever a look. The big Nord placed his palm over the Khajiits shoulder.

I have an idea, Jerric said. I know what we need, but not where to find it. I know someone who might. A frost atronach. His name is Ishckrihk.

Kjestrid opened her mouth and then closed it again.

I can summon him to any realm, Jerric continued. I hope. Hes an ally. This may be his home for all we know. Its cold enough for ice people here.

What happens when your summon turns against you? Will he call for his folk? Kjestrid gestured at the canyon. Will he move the ground on us, grow some frostlings in our bellies?

Asgerd said to show them what you can do and theyll more readily accept your command. Kjestrid, Jerric said, we need to move in the right direction. We dont have the luxury of mistakes and backtracking. Something to eat or burn for heat will buy us time, but wed miss it in this mist. Ishckrihk can see without eyes. Lets ask him.

Do it, Kjestrid told him.

Jerrics three companions stepped back in the same motion. Their weapons sang into the frozen air.

Look, Jerric said. Settle the hells down. I dont want to make him angry. Ive fought daedra with him before and he stayed true, but right now theres nothing else around for him to kill.

Make sure you tell him that were friends, Kjestrid called.

Dont know if thats going to matter, muttered Jerric.

Ishckrihk made the connection immediately. The instant Jerrics portal opened, the atronachs essence roared out and began to solidify. For the first time Jerric felt the daedra reach through the spell and tug at his magicka. Jerric had one thought as Ishckrihk rose before them in crystalline splendor. This could go very badly.

Ishckrihks featureless face tilted down at Jerric, then back as he surveyed the group behind him.

Ishckrihk.

Jerric. The atronachs voice sounded in Jerrics head at the same time he made the sound, Ck.

Jerric gestured to the group. These are my, uh, friends. We are allies. They are your allies. Protect them as you protect me. He sent an image of the group fighting dremora together with Ishckrihk at their side.

Ishckrihk bowed his head lump and brought his hand spikes together. He made a soft rumble.

Jerric turned back to his guild mates. They looked nervous but steady. Even Shamir-do stood still.

Now dont repay their trust by getting them all killed, he thought. Jerric let out the breath he hadnt known hed been holding. My name is Jerric, son of Kjelling. Im from Kvatch.

Youre Lionheart, Kjestrid said after a moment. Heard of you.

All right, said Jerric. Now me and the ice man are going to talk. He explained the situation aloud to Ishckrihk, all the while adding layers with the pictures in his mind.

I am sight for you, Ishckrihk answered. The vision came in a disorienting rush. Jerric fought rising bile as Ishckrihks view laid over his own, showing him what the atronach could see. He closed his eyes so he could concentrate, then staggered when the ground seemed to shift.

Kjestrid, is something moving underneath?

No. What is it? Whats alive? Ask him.

Ishckrihk answered Kjestrid with creaking sounds and another surge of thoughts crowding Jerrics mind.

Gods, Jerric groaned. I think hes What?

Ground.

Yeah, I know its in the ground. What

Ground a life. The ground is alive. They are one.

Does that ice noise make sense to you? Kjestrid asked Jerric.

No, hes talking in my Hes... Jerric opened his eyes and spoke to Ishckrihk. Youre using more words.

Ishckrihk made his affirmative hiss, then a series of cracking sounds.

Jerric stared at him. Are you laughing?

Anvil, Kjestrid barked, Report.

He says the ground is alive. Jerric said to Kjestrid. He shot a look back at the atronach. No kidding. He says its, uh, I get the sense its a, what do you call it? Like coral.

Colonial, said Shamir-do.

Yeah. Its a daedra colony. Of little ones.

Little what? Kjestrid asked. Those seeds you were talking about?

I dont know how to kill the ground, so lets not stay and find out. Lesser daedra take different forms to meet what their masters need. Like doors, or weapons and armor. Some of what the dremora wear are other daedra. Maybe they need rocks. Maybe theyre growing a tower. Maybe we should get the hells out of here before it eats us and skitts out a staircase.

Kuh, kuh, kuh, said Ishckrihk.

Hes definitely laughing, thought Jerric. He felt another chill, this one from his insides.

Focus, said Kjestrid. Tell me what you know.

Jerric stood facing the same direction as Ishckrihk and closed his eyes again. He could see his own back in front of the frost atronach. Uh there are mountains over there. Theres a volcano covered in snow. I can see lava glowing and steam coming up. I guess thats where this fog is coming from. He spoke to Ishckrihk. Show me again.

The pictures came with a jumble of impressions. Sorting through them made Jerrics head ache. Then his heart leaped.

Are you sure?

Sss, said Ishckrihk.

It took all of Jerrics will not to just start running. Theres a settlement in that direction, he said. With a sigil tower. Ishckrihk says its active. Its holding open another Gate.

Where? asked Kjestrid.

Ishckrihk gestured.

Yeah, said Jerric. Its over there.

Shamir-do growled some Taagra before correcting himself. How far to the Gate?

Forget it, Jerric told him. Were going to the tower. Im closing that Gate from there.

How far? Kjestrid demanded.

Do you think you can get through the Gate before I close it? Jerric asked them. I cant judge the terrain, and I dont know the distance in either direction other than its far. Are you going to risk it? I dont want to leave you here, but Im not going to wait.

Thats not your call, said Kjestrid.

Oh hells, dont screw this up. Jerric looked at each of them in turn, squinting against the cold. Youre right, I dont command you. Im asking for your trust. These Gates and towers look like ones Ive seen before. Ones Ive closed before. Like the ones at Kvatch, and in the Reserve, and by the Gold Road, and a dozen other places I cant even name.

He pointed into the unseen distance. That Gate might not open to our world, but theres a chance it does. Theres a chance that daedra are crossing through and our folk are dying while we stand here burning time. And theres a chance we can close it if we get to that sigil tower. He jabbed a hand in the other direction. That way. One step at a time, one fight at a time, until were at the top or dead from trying. Sigil stones bear the mark of their Lords hand. Theres one up there holding the Gate open. When we take it, my gut tells me it will reek of Dagon.

Jerrics arms dropped to his sides. I want you to come with me. Ill need your night-seeing eyes in that tower, and your bows, and your stealth, and all of our blades together so that we can close the damned Gate and make it home. But I will go alone if I have to. Just like I have gone alone before.

Shamir-dos expression was unreadable, but he had started to shiver. Gjaever somehow looked even taller.

Kjestrid sheathed her sword. Were with you. Jerric.

He drew an orb of arcane frost into his hand and tossed it into the canyon.

When you use the word 'drew', it makes me think of pulling it out of a sheath or pocket, like drawing a sword. Perhaps saying something like created, or willed, or called up might sound better?

What a horrific description/theory of how deadra are created in those flesh pods! ohmy.gif

Maybe we should get the hells out of here before it eats us and skitts out a staircase.
Sounds like a capital idea! That would explain all those staircases in the woods too...

Wonderful depiction of the psychic link between Jerric and Izzy, especially the deadric laughter.

And Jerric spills his real name at last. Given that he's closing gates with these people, there doesn't seem to be much risk that they will sell him out to the Mythic Dawn! Though they might wag their tongues boasting about how they fought with the Hero of Kvatch once they get back to Bruma...

Yay! More Jerric! biggrin.gif

Regarding your communication conventions, they worked fine for me. The "speech" and thoughts bits are quite conventional so it is only the ''telepathic'' that is unique here and that seems like a fine way of conveying Itchy's telepathic thoughts. I face some of the same concerns since Acadian sometimes communicates to Buffy via voice and sometimes telepathically. The voice part is easy. For the telepathic parts I will often 'speech tag' them to help clarify. Something like this:
I stared at Sam after he challenged me to a drinking contest. What have I gotten myself into, I pondered.

I wouldn't try it, Buffy, Acadian silently urged.

Thanks for the in our last episode warm up.

You really show us the terrifying disorientation and fear of perhaps never getting out of this creepily strange place.

Great touch bringing in Itchy! He seems to be proving his worth.

Jerrics self-doubts, humility and heroism all shine through wonderfully!

Nit: '...and all of our blades together so that we can closed the damned Gate and make it home.' - - close?

I curious, wondering when you'd return to us with another chapter. Here you are. Let's begin.

The conversation between Schnitzel Ishckrihk wasn't confusing at all. Didn't confuse me one bit.

"What is this place?"
I have no idea. Ive seen this before.

Well at least he's partly honest laugh.gif

Daedric creation sounds as Daedric as it can get. Disturbing for fellow mortals. If they don't hurry, Darnands words may be true not only for those scholars. Ishy found the group amusing, as did I. Certainly can't trust a Daedric being, but so far he's been loyal. Let's hope the familiar stays that way.

Still wondering what realm this is.

And yet I am, and live—like vapours tossed.
I long for scenes where man hath never trod
A place where woman never smiled or wept
There to abide with my Creator, God,
And sleep as I in childhood sweetly slept,
Untroubling and untroubled where I lie
The grass below—above the vaulted sky.”

I love how you've kept Oblivion Gates continually threatening and alien (I still haven't played the game but I get the impression they can start getting rather same-old same-old) by first changing everything Jerric thought he knew about them and then actually having the gate close while they were in it! That seems like one of those dangers that should really be a big concern but you just ignore in the game since you know it won't happen. Jerric and co., stranded in Oblivion... the whole thing really brings home how dangerous jumping in a Gate really is.

Very nice Daedric worldbuilding touches, too. Those pods... wacko.gif

Also, I have to say I wasn't surprised to see Jerric gave in and told them his real name. Made for subterfuge, our boy is not. tongue.gif

This is brilliant, and almost un-Jerric at that. If you're lost in a cold place, ask a Frostie, especially when Itchy is available on demand.

I like the continuing tension between Jerric and Kjestrid. And that she's not falling apart when things get way out of her control. Since Jerric has already tried that, and found it didn't help, he's got an advantage she doesn't.

Looking forward to July's episode biggrin.gif

I am catching up, it will take some time though!

Chapter 17: Bruma, Part Two

This chapter was a rich immersion back into what makes Jerric (Jerric). The pee-writing his name in the snow when he is supposed to be using an alias; then immediately losing track of his alias at the sight of a pretty girl and blurting his name out; then forgetting he is supposed to be Darnand's servant of sorts - but the best line of all came from the Altmer at the end!!! SPEW !!!!

I'm with Jerric in wondering what is going on in Lildereth's mind and what she meant by Darnand not getting laid in Bruma; have she and Darnand continued to "forkulate" since that first time? And if so, why hasn't it been written into the script? laugh.gif

Awesome chapter, this is exactly how I remember this story to be = excellent and fun!
