Mine would be:
Emerson, Lake and Palmer
DragonForce
Pink Floyd
Genesis (Gabriel era)

And then for something completely contrary to what you'd assume I'd like from what the above bands are:
The Clash
Dead Kennedys
Rage Against the Machine
Sex Pistols

Mine are only three. These are;

Tool

A Perfect Circle

Marilyn Manson

If alternative/industrial rock is your thing, you should definately listen to them. Not pnly that, but their songs have meanings as well...

If you overcome the sense of creepiness once you hear them for the first time.

Old guy: .. Youth and charisma.

Djinn: Your heart speaks of wanting. I could make it true, milord.
Me: Hmmm. I wish to know what I want. Then you could hook me up in some insidious deal, spirit.

my favorites change periodically. I'm a musician and if I hear something new (to me at least) I'll be all over it for a while.

currently, I'm in a black/doom metal phase.

Mayhem
Darkthrone
Burzum
Burning Witch
Sleep

Not the most easily accessible music, but if you give it a fair chance you may realize how much there really is to it. Really bad recording quality most of the time, too but it adds to the bleak atmosphere they try to create.

Also been digging some Aerosmith, Miles Davis, and The Doors lately.

Metalcore and death metal are the two genres that I like. But some good old thrash metal is always nice too.

Metallica, Megadeth, Avenged Sevenfold, As I lay Dying, The Black Dahlia Murder are my favorites I suppose.

I also play the drums in a metalcore band myself.

I played in a band once, too! I was the violinist/singer. It went pretty well, only none of us could write songs worth a penny, so we just did some Radiohead and Beatles. Then my best friend, the guitar player moved to ... far away... and the band kinda split up.

Right now (because I tend to switch favorite bands) I'm in a heavy metal Radiohead/ Rise Against phase.

Sometimes I listen to classical, too.

I applaud your taste in music, while I'm a but unsure about the last two I know that Mayhem, Burzum and Darkthrone are Norwegian bands and amongst the first bands of Norwegian Black Metal who started the Black Metal wave during the late 80's and early 90's. I agree that the recording is a bit poor but you must realize that it was part of the whole point, They wanted the music to be bleak cold and raw in order to capture the essence of Norway's cold and empty forests and mountains...well that's enough lecturing from me today.

My personal favourites are as follows:

1: Manowar, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden.
2: Megadeth, Slayer, Blind Guardian.
3: Helloween, Hammerfall.
4: AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Motorhead and ZZ Top.
5: Sabaton, Dimmu Borgir, Darkthrone, Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen.
6: Poison, Motley Crue.

As you can see I've placed several bands on each number, this is due to the fact that I can't decide which ones I like more.
