Well, I can't imagine a better sight for Savlian to wake up to than Buffy aglow in an argent halo! No wonder he thought he'd died. wink.gif And I have to agree with TK - the mark of a great commander is that they never forget the fallen. It's a motif I've touched on before, time and time again.

I loved the (too-brief) description of the field kitchen, and the reference to the colorful tents as being a donation from Countess Umbranox. This, along with the laundry in the previous post, really brings home how much of a role cooperation between cities and counties ought to play in the economics and politics of Cyrodiil. And hey, what better thing to do than repurpose a bunch of otherwise useless canvas? Make sails out of them?

As for the rest, I will defer to primus pilus Julian of Anvil: Sir Acadian, please kindly send that Raccan fellow up to me at Bruma. I can use a few lessons on using magic in combat! Especially against those spell-casting fetchers! Some time before Emperor Martin gives me the next assignment would be nice.

Nevertheless, some of Savlian's essence filled my nostrils leaving me lightheaded. I wanted to curl up next to him but knew I should content myself to just look at him for a few moments before reporting to Sigrid.
wub.gif A lovely, wobbly-knees moment even though Buffy was already kneeling down. I was smiling over Savlian’s confusion when he woke to a vision of his heroine-in-a-halo. I wonder what he wears on that leather necklace.

"Buffy, I know this is a miserable place and I feel selfish for saying so, but I'm damn glad you're here. I've missed you."
Oh, this is perfect Savlian! I can just hear him saying it.

I was enjoying the mess tent when…

A Redguard in plate armor rose from his seat and arranged both a claymore and mage staff on his back.

Oh my gosh, Raccan! He sounds amazing. His Atronach birthsign gives me an especially big grin. Wow, this is exciting!

Hmm I wonder what's on the end of that leather.
I liked the description of the kitchen, you paint a nice picture.
How did you come up with the name Agarctova? Or is that in game?

I look forward to reading the next episode.

All- Let me precede today's episode with an announcement. As Acadian the Senior approaches his ninety first winter, I make another pilgrimage to visit. I fast travel today and look forward to the bittersweet meeting of paladins, not knowing how many more such meetings are left. I know we will talk of fast steeds named Superian, Corsair and Phantom. I’ll be back in plenty of time to catch up on the few days of reading that I will miss and to post next Friday’s episode. Thanks for your patience and warm support, my friends. happy.gif

Now, as you will recall in our last episode (134), Buffy found Savlian sleeping in his tent – until he awoke from a nightmare. Unlike her (clann)fear-based nightmares, it seemed his are more related to decisions regretted and lives lost on his orders. She encouraged him to sleep some more and left his tent, agreeing to meet later at the Mages Guild. Passing the dining area, she met a new guild mate who told her of his harrowing encounter with members of a local band of conjurers.

KC- Thank you! I’m glad that Savlian’s confusion at waking from a nightmare to the vision hovering over him came through nicely. Thanks also for endorsing our introduction to Raccan.

SubRosa- Buffy’s quite touchy-feely of course, so a quick kiss on the cheek, reassuring touch and other such gestures are very natural for her. She is still hoping for a real kiss from her hero. The encampment is Buffy’s new home and I hope to continue to present more of her impressions of life there. Thanks for the nit – I agree and added that comma.

TK- Your own skill with evocative description renders your kind words even more welcome. I’m glad to see Savlian coming through, as I will be trying to develop him more through what he shows us and what we hear about him than what he says. Buffy has lots of old friends to catch up with and a good number of new ones to meet at her new city. I will be trying to spread those out as she makes her way around the camp. I’m so glad that our conservative use of words in introducing Raccan carried much of who he is! Thank you.

Rider- When it comes to noble selfless heroes, I've always considered Savlian to be the gritty real deal and I know he is a powerfully important figure to you as well. It is therefore with significant trepidation that I embark on trying develop him as a character, hoping ever so much that my humble skills are up to the task. You well know how emotional and precious some segments of a story can be to its writer, and much of the Kvatch storyline is that way for Buffy and I. Your kind words bring great comfort in that regard. I found the concept of Raccan quite intriguing. As you recall, in BF those who can recharge weapons must forsake all spellcasting (else every mage would simply self charge their own weapons). So Raccan compensates by using enchanted blades + staff and mastering blade, alchemy and heavy armor. After Kvatch, we’ll send him straight to Bruma with orders to report to Julian for duty!

mALX- Thank you so much for commenting on the intended ‘angelic’ overtones of Savlian waking to the aura of light surrounding our Child of Dawn. As I said to Rider, this whole Kvatch storyline is quite emotional for Buffy and I. Therefore, your steadfast encouragement and enthusiasm is so wonderfully soothing and appreciated.

Grits- Thank you also for enjoying the short initial reunion between Buffy and Savlian. I’m so glad you considered the line you quoted to be ‘perfect Savlian’. One of his enduring traits that was inspired by his game dialogue will be liberal use of the word 'damn' - and I agree, it so fits his manner. I’m glad you enjoyed Raccan. Like Jerric, he has the steel and stones to handle that Atronach birthsign.

Riften- A very warm welcome to you as you join our saga! Please just jump right in with the reading; Buffy will catch you up as we go along. I’m so delighted that you are bringing Riften’s tale to our forum!

TheBrume- Welcome! I’m quite enjoying Lucius’ journey as he makes his way to Cyrodiil and am glad you are sharing his story on our forum. Buffy got distracted before she could learn what Savlian wears around his neck under that tunic. Perhaps the next time she sees him without his mail, she’ll find out. Fort Agarctova is an invention for Buffy’s story. We spent quite a bit of time and some googling to come up with a list of medieval/fantasy place names that might work, then narrowed it to that name. It is a fairly small fort southeast of Kvatch right on the Cyrodiil border overlooking the Strid River and Valenwood. And as you have read, it likely hosts a clan of conjurers.

* * *

135 The Kvatch Guild of Mages

A pair of weathered green banners flanked the entrance. The vertical arcane symbols they displayed left no doubt that the large blue and white striped tent belonged to my guild. Once inside, I was surprised by its spaciousness. Soft lighting was provided by numerous glow stones – likely donated by other chapters of the Mages Guild – and augmented by several flickering candles. The ground was almost completely covered by a patchwork of carpets. Several tapestries adorned the fabric walls.

Toward the left end of the tent, a pleasant looking woman in a russet felt dress stood behind a table, crafting potions. Small fire bowls were nestled beneath the simmering alembic and calcinator. Amber liquid was cooling in the retort, no doubt to disperse cloudiness and strengthen its effect. I was relieved to see that the guild had a fine set of alchemy equipment for us to use. Recalling that Sigrid was an alchemist, I wasn’t surprised. The Breton, who appeared to be about my age, lowered the pink vial she had just filled to the table and looked at me. Her stained fingers brushed an errant strand of brown hair behind one round ear as she said, "Can I help you?"

I approached and cheerfully said, "I’m Buffy."

At the mention of my name, her pleasant expression cooled. “Pelena Maro.” Her posture changed as she stood up very straight – perhaps to emphasize that she was taller than I. “I’m a new associate. My husband, Gladius, has often mentioned your name.” Her eyes traveled from my head to my toes. “He somehow neglected to tell me how attractive you are.”

The ice in her tone negated any compliment carried by her words. Choose your response with caution, Buffy, lest you get off on the wrong foot here. “I’ve also heard Gladius speak of you, Pelena, and it’s clear he adores you. I so respect you for bravely choosing to accompany your man to this dangerous place. I know you must love each other very much. Congratulations, guild sister.”

She narrowed her eyes as if weighing my words. Apparently my response was adequate, for after a few awkward moments her face softened somewhat. "Well, I wasn't about to let him get away from me,” she declared, “and convinced him to let me try to join the Mages Guild. I don't know much about spells or poisons, but I learned a great deal about potions from Father. I feel lucky that Sigrid accepted me in her branch. She’s teaching me how to summon a skeleton."

“I’m just the opposite when it comes to alchemy,” I offered, grasping for something in common besides Gladius. “I can make pretty strong poisons but I’m just not very good with potions. And like you, I’m trying to improve my conjuration skill as well. Perhaps we could train together sometime."

"Gladius thought it would be a good idea if I learned how to summon help to protect myself. He should be finished with his shift up by the gate in a couple hours. He's on the same watch schedule as Dreelius."

"I haven't met Dreelius yet." Seeing no bedrolls in the tent, I added, "Where does everyone sleep?"

Pelena swept her hand toward four blue tapestries along the rear 'wall'. "There." I could now see they actually served as flaps to enter additional tents connected to the main one. Pointing to the closest, she smiled shyly and said, "This one's for Gladius and I. I'm so glad that Sigrid and Lucilius both agreed that Gladius could live here in the guild with me. Lucilius said it would be much better than billeting us with the soldiers. He joked that Gladius would be expected to share anything he brought up to the barracks tents.” After we both chuckled, Pelena continued, “In the next tent is Roliand Hanus and Arielle Jurard - a pair of battlemages. They’re assigned to different schedules, but are both off duty and sleeping right now."

"I've had the pleasure of meeting them before." I said.

“I’m not surprised,” replied Pelena. “Gladius told me how much you’ve traveled. This is my first time away from The Imperial City.” I was relieved that her previous coolness toward me seemed to have largely dissipated. “Anyway,” she continued, “that third tent is for Dreelius and Raccan."

"I just met Raccan. He was headed up the hill for some training before duty."

"Yes," said Pelena. "His watch team will be relieving the one that Gladius and Dreelius are assigned to."

"It all seems quite organized," I said, letting my eyes wander around the tent.

"That’s because of Savlian Matius, Lucilius Marcus and Sigrid,” the Breton replied. “They each care a great deal about Kvatch. Oh, that last tent is the guildmagister’s. She should be back soon. She makes several trips up the hill each day to check on the mages and soldiers that stand watch, making sure they are in good health and have plenty of potions. There’s a couple things about Sigrid that just seem to lift men’s spirits.”

I smiled at the Breton’s a sense of humor. “I’m sure she’s glad for your potion making skill.” We chatted some more as she showed me around the guild.

Along one end of the tent was an arming table. I noted a pair of blue hoods among the various pieces of plate armor that I imagined belonged to Roliand and Arielle. In the nearby corner was a barrel containing a variety of claymores, arming swords and staves. Pelena confirmed the weaponry was enchanted. Except for two blades belonging to the battlemages, it had all been brought from the University by Raccan. I staged Slayer, along with my quiver and pack, by the barrel. At her request, I then helped the Breton as she practiced summoning a skeleton.

"I see you two have met." I turned at the Nordic voice to see that Sigrid had just entered the guild. "Welcome back, Buffy."

She was as striking - well, intimidating actually - as ever with her golden hair, crystal blue eyes and ample bosom that strained the bodice of her blue velvet gown. Waves of self-doubt swept over me. How could Savlian be interested in a skinny big eared elf when everyday he dealt with such a beautifully elegant and shapely woman? I managed a smile. "Journeyman Buffy, reporting for duty."

Sigrid grinned. "Join me in my tent. Let's talk."

"It was wonderful to meet you, Pelana," I said. "I just know we’ll become good friends." I then turned to follow the Nordic hips, frowning enviously as I noted how dramatically they flared out from her narrow waist.

Sigrid’s tent was simply appointed. Bedding was neatly rolled up in one corner. There was a small wooden table covered with books, letters, an inkpot and quill. Several gowns that appeared identical to the one Sigrid wore hung from a line where one wall of her tent met the ceiling. She briefly stretched, then rubbed her lower back with both hands before easing herself onto a crate that served as a chair. At her gestured invitation, I sat on the only other piece of furniture in the tent – a sea chest. “It’s good to see you again, Buffy. Congratulations on your promotion.”

“Yours also, Guildmagister.”

She folded her hands on the table. “Is what Savlian Matius tells me true? That you have researched Daedra Lords and know what it takes to destroy our Oblivion Gate?”

“I don’t have all the answers,” I said, “but I’ve learned what holds the gate open and believe I know how to close it.”

“Thank the Nine, Buffy.” She picked up the quill from her table and absently rubbed the feathered end over one cheek. “Our watch teams that defend against the gate are already pretty well covered by mages and archers. I would ask that your focus be on working directly with Savlian Matius to help him get that awful thing closed. Whatever it takes.”

“Yes, Guildmagister,” I replied. “I was hoping that would be my assignment.”

“Do you snore?”

“I-I don’t think so,” I answered, tilting my head at the dramatic change in subject.

“Good. Then you can bunk in here with me.” Her face then softened and she winked. “That is unless our brave captain has asked you to share his tent.”

Instantly, I felt a warm flush surge up through my face to the tips of my ears. “D-do my feelings for Savlian show that much?”

Sigrid loosed a hearty laugh. “You speak his name as if he was one of the Nine.”

I frowned as the insidious vines of a new concern began to encircle and squeeze my heart. “Does he share his tent with many women?”

Sigrid shook her head and gave me a crooked smile. “I’ve known him for many years and would never have believed any woman could penetrate his sense of duty – that is, until I saw the way he looked at you during your last visit.”

“Thank you, Sigrid, for telling me that. You’ve no idea the swirling thoughts that fill my head. I-I have trouble believing he could be interested in me when,” I lowered my eyes to the simple carpet on the ground, “there is such a beautiful woman here who is so devoted to his city.”

“Look, Buffy,” she admonished, “one jealous young lady who lacks self-confidence is enough in my guild.” Her fingers then gently lifted my chin until our eyes met. “I’ll tell you the same thing I told Pelena: You’ve clearly marked your territory, and guild mates don’t steal from each other. When I’ve spoken to Savlian of personal matters, he’s always turned the conversation to the elven mystic archer that he insisted would someday return.”

“I assure you that I’m much better with magic and bow than sorting out my feelings when it comes to men.”

“I’m sure, Buffy. I’ve just received letters from both Kud-Ei and Boderi Farano commending your abilities. Regarding Savlian, I’m thankful he’s in charge here, but the man has not yet learned that there are other important things in life beyond the duty that consumes him. If there’s anyone who can teach him, I figure it’s the little elf who’s just returned. As for me, I would frankly prefer an older man who already has his priorities sorted out – like Lucilius.”

My eyes opened wide. “You and Lucilius?”

The Nord’s face blushed slightly as she said, “Well, we do spend lots of time together working on watch schedules and priorities as we try to implement Savlian’s policies.” She then smiled wistfully. “When Lucilius talks to me, he looks into my eyes instead of staring at my breasts.”

“I can’t say I’ve ever had that problem,” I said, unsure as to whether I felt envious or grateful. Probably both, I decided.

With a tact and grace far exceeding that of most Nords, Sigrid smiled and replied, “That’s because of those big elven eyes.”

“Guildmagister?” I recognized the lilting voice just outside the flap of Sigrid’s tent.

“Yes, Pelena,” replied the Nord.

“Savlian Matius is here asking for Buffy,” came the soft reply.

“Thank you, she’ll be right out.” Sigrid lowered her voice and squeezed my hand. “Go to him. You’ve much work to do.”

Pelena Maro lacks the diplomatic skills Buffy has. Or has Gladius earned the suspicion and jealousy his wife has? Either way I’m glad Buffy chose the diplomatic course.

Lol! Can’t have the wife crammed in with the soldiers!

There’s a couple things about Sigrid that just seem to lift men’s spirits.
laugh.gif

Oh no! jealousy strikes Buffy when Sigrid joins her and Pelana in the guild tent!

That was a dramatic change in subject! Buffy’s reaction is priceless. I’m glad Sigrid had that little chat with Buffy as well. We also learn that Pelana is merely nervous. I'm glad that Gladius hasn't done anything.

And Savlian arrives!

You are Fast Traveling? ohmy.gif Don't say that in the Bethesda forums, you will be accused of ruining real life, and not being a real Reality player. wink.gif

Her stained fingers brushed an errant strand of brown hair behind one round ear as she said,
I loved the very light touch you used here in pointing out the Breton's round ear. A stark contrast to Buffy's own wood elf ears, that she is so self-conscious of.

It seems Pelena is a touch jealous. Not at all surprising, considering how well her man seems to know the Buffster, not to mention our bosmer bowgirl's own attributes.

There’s a couple things about Sigrid that just seem to lift men’s spirits.”
Yes, I believe I have seen them both... wink.gif

I see Buffy's own enviousness of Sigrid is still alive and well also. That is such a wonderful juxtaposition with Pelena's feelings.

She briefly stretched, then rubbed her lower back with both hands
This was a good - and subtle - touch as showing the price of those two things that lift men's spirits so...

“That is unless our brave captain has asked you to share his tent.”
Oh my! ohmy.gif It appears that our wood elves have a habit of broadcasting their feelings toward everyone!

I’m much better with magic and bow than sorting out my feelings when it comes to men.
Ok, this is one place where Buffy and Teresa are completely unalike! laugh.gif

Seriously, just as I liked your gently showing us both Pelena's and Buffy's jealousies and insecurities concerning their men, I was so glad to hear Sigrid bluntly tell the Buffster to chill out. Of course it was pleasantly reassuring to also hear of how Savlian dwells upon a certain mystic archer as well.

When Lucilius talks to me, he looks into my eyes instead of staring at my breasts.”
Uh oh, I hate to break this to you Sigrid, but Luke is probably gay! biggrin.gif

All in all this was a nice segment that helped build the Kvatch Mages Guild, and made it seem a real place, occupied by real people, including Buffy herself. As you said, it is her new home, and now it feels like a home.

nits:
likely donated by other guilds
You might want to revist using the term guilds. My first thought was the Fighters Guild, Prostitute's Guild, etc... But I think you meant the Mages Guild chapters in other cities. So perhaps say other chapters of the MG, or something to that effect.

"Yes," said Pelena. "His watch team will be relieving the one that Gladius and Dreelius are assigned to."

Gladius? That is one guy I'd never want to cross! His name literally means 'sword'! ohmy.gif

I'm glad Buffy was so willing to accept Pelena! There are far too few friends in the world, and Pelena certainly looked as though she needed one. I'm also glad she warmed up to our Diminutive Devoted Dame. biggrin.gif

This chapter did a very good job at getting us back up to speed with the goings-on at Kvatch for the Mages Guild. Further aid has been sent besides Buffy, so it does look like those elderly tower-dwellers have their priorities straight. Their people got hit just as bad as everyone else, after all.

It looks to me as though Buffy is ready to assault Oblivia's Gateway!

There ARE a couple of things ON Sigrid that lift a part of men up, but it's not their spirits - it's their...er...

I can’t imagine a more sincere compliment than another woman with her claws out. I loved watching Buffy carefully disarm Pelena and win her over by finding their common ground. Pelena’s house tour gave me a clear picture of Buffy’s new home. Sigrid’s chapter is running more smoothly from a tent than others do in their stone guild halls.

I love your portrayal of Sigrid, an elegant Nord with a hearty laugh and grin. Now Buffy has a roomie! I think that Sigrid’s direct manner is so fitting for her. Sounds like the two blondes will have plenty of non-guild business to whisper about after lights out. Thumbs up to Lucilius for timing his ogling for when Sigrid won’t see it. tongue.gif

I frowned as the insidious vines of a new concern began to encircle and squeeze my heart. “Does he share his tent with many women?”
ohmy.gif I hadn’t thought of that! Whew.

“Savlian Matius is here asking for Buffy,” came the soft reply.
Yay!

Safe travels, Acadian! smile.gif

All- I’m back from my pilgrimage, all caught up on the wonderful stories that I follow and happy to be able to update with a new episode today. Thanks so much for the well wishes!

As you will recall, Buffy spent Episode 135 in the large tent complex of her guild. She met Pelena, a new associate and wife of the former Bravilian guard, Gladius Maro. Our elf managed to carefully diffuse some jealously on Pelena’s part, only to confront her own similar insecurities during a meeting with Sigrid that followed. As she had hoped, Buffy’s new guildmagister has assigned her the task of helping Savlian Matius close the Oblivion Gate. The meeting was ended when Savlian Matius arrived, asking for Buffy.

mALX- Thank you! Like you, I’m thinking Pelena’s jealousy is simply born out of youthful insecurity – something else she has in common with Buffy. tongue.gif Thanks for the link to our buxom blond bombshell in blue.

KC- Thanks for noting the similarity between Pelena’s behavior and Buffy’s in the presence of Sigrid. Yup, Gladius is a keeper.

SubRosa- Thank you also for commenting on the similarities between Pelena and Buffy. I loved that Sigrid dealt with both of her young charges’ insecurities by quoting the policy that guild mates don’t steal from each other. I agree on your nit and clarified it – thank you.

TK- Thank you! Like you, Buffy is very glad her attempt to reach out into Pelena’s coolness and sooth feathers seemed to have worked. Kvatch is Buffy’s new home and it will take some time to gently develop it as well as the hero in a headband.

Foxy- I’m so glad that mention of Sigrid drew you to attention! Thanks for stopping by.

Grits- Your own sensitivity and skill with Abiene’s feminine thinking make your kind words so very appreciated! Thanks for endorsing Sigrid. I do indeed see her as a strong woman who has risen to the demands placed upon her in magnificent fashion.

Riften- Thank you for the kind words about the guild and Buffy’s conversation with Sigrid. I hope you’ll be pleased that Buffy will spend this entire next episode with Savlian and he will show us a little more of both Kvatch and himself.

TheBrume- I’m so glad Buffy’s chat with Pelena had a realistic ring for you. Thank you!

McBadgere- I’m delighted that you’ve begun posting your wonderful story at Chorrol. Regarding Buffy, thanks for the kind words! I hope you won’t be daunted by the length of our saga. Just jump right in where we are now or consider the link below.

Given that Buffy’s Journal has grown quite long and that we have several newer readers, I’ve created an ‘executive summary’ thread in the Acadian subforum to help those wanting to quickly catch up with us in one short sitting: Link.

* * *

136 Living With Oblivia

As I stepped from Sigrid’s tent into the main guild area, I looked up into the brown eyes of my hero and felt my heart quicken. Savlian stood before me in his headband, mail and wolf-headed surcoat. An arming sword rode at one hip and I could see the round edges of a steel shield that was stowed on his back. “Thank you for calling on me,” I said.

“I was hoping that you would tour the defensive perimeter with me,” was his reply.

After shouldering Slayer and my quiver, I slipped out the guild tent as Savlian held the flap open for us. Our chatting was continuously interrupted as we made our way through the camp to the base of the trail leading up to the defensive barricade. Savlian knew everyone of course. As we stopped to talk with many residents of the camp, he introduced me to each of them. He queried several of his soldiers on the quality and quantity of food as we traversed Weedum-Ja’s dining tent. From his comments and questions, it became clear that he made it his business to know the people of Kvatch – especially her defenders.

As we started up the trail, he said, “I hope your trip from the Arcane University was uneventful?”

“Mostly,” I replied. “Only one bandit between the University and Skingrad, but even a Khajiit is no match for my horse’s speed. Raccan told me, however, that he encountered a pair of conjurers just east of here a few days ago as he made the same journey.”

Savlian nodded. “Falcedon Laenius’ mounted patrol route is between Skingrad and Kvatch. He does a fine job keeping that stretch of road free of bandits. We’ve been having problems close to camp for some time with those conjurers though. They seem to melt in and out of the wilderness to the south. I suspect they have a lair down on the Valenwood border in an old Legion fort called Argarctova. We just can’t spare the resources to serve them the cold steel of justice.”

“Raccan said Falcedon told him about the same thing,” I replied.

“Lucilius and Sigrid think Raccan shows great promise here. If he’s as lethal as Roliand and Arielle, he’ll be a welcome addition indeed.” He paused to greet a pair of passing mail-clad guardsmen from Chorrol and introduce me to them.

Although I had seen members of the Legion hail each other on occasion by briefly planting a fist to the middle of their chest, I didn’t understand how or when this was required. It seemed though, that all of the soldiers greeted Savlian in this manner, and he returned their gestures in kind.

As we continued up the hill, he said, “Between Falcedon patrolling east and Anvil’s ranger patrolling to our west, the bandits and highwaymen fare poorly in our area. Not to mention that we have little to steal.”

“Is that ranger’s name Alawen?” I asked.

“It is,” replied Savlian. “Countess Umbranox has extended her range to the edge of our encampment. We rarely see the ranger, but it’s not unusual for one of the rotating Anvil guards to report finding a dead bandit along the Gold Road west of here - normally with a single wound to the chest where Alawen has cut her arrow free.”

“I know the ranger and she’s a fine-“

“Hail, Captain!” The voice that interrupted me came from an approaching soldier wearing the colors of Kvatch. An Argonian in a blue robe and hood strode next to him. As they drew closer, the soldier that I now recognized as Gladius Maro continued, “Is that little elf at your side Buffy of Bravil?”

“Aye,” replied Savlian as his fist returned Gladius’ salute. He then added, with what I believed was a note of pride, “She just returned to us this morning.”

“Gladius, you may call me Buffy of Kvatch,” I teased. “It’s good to see you again, my friend. I’ve already met Pelena and I’m so glad you brought her with you. Congratulations.”

“I’m glad you two already know each other,” said Savlian. Turning to me, he added, “Pelena’s potions are of great help to us, and Gladius’ strong sword arm is very welcome here.” Nodding toward the robed mage, Savlian continued, “Buffy, this fine mage is Dreelius. His deadly spells have made life much easier for his watch team.” Addressing the Argonian, he added, “Dreelius, you’ll be pleased to know that Buffy here has just reported for duty with your guild branch.”

I extended my hand to the Argonian. He took it in a gentle grasp and softly said, “Welcome to Kvatch, guild mate.”

I noted the only weapon he carried was a silver dagger at one hip of his belted robe. “I’m pleased to meet you, Dreelius. Our numbers are small, but it seems like we have a fine guild here.”

“I know you both have just come off the line,” said Savlian to Gladius and Dreelius. “Thank you for your selfless work, but I know you must be hungry. Weedum-Ja has some roasted venison waiting for you down the hill, thanks to Buffy. And Gladius, you take good care of that new wife of yours. I understand she’s learning how to summon skeletons already?”

“She is, Captain,” replied Gladius. “Thanks for the venison, Buffy.”

Savlian and I continued up the hill until we came to a cleared area at one of the switchbacks. “This is Camp Defiance,” he announced.

“Lucilius mentioned having to set up more tents due to the influx of soldiers from other cities,” I said.

He placed a hand on each of my shoulders and turned me to face him. “Thanks to you and those letters from Captain Draconis of Leyawiin, our numbers have grown dramatically since you were here last.” He then pointed to the rows of tents.

I could see a number of soldiers seated in the camp working on their weapons or armor. Several were gathered around a pair of their comrades as the two took turns tossing a pair of small carved figurines onto the ground and evaluating the results. I heard terms like ‘leaning jowler’ and ‘razorback’ bantered around. I looked questioningly at Savlian.

After a chuckle, he replied. “Although the game is called ‘Pass the Pigs’, it’s commonly played throughout the Legion to pass time.”

Looking around, I said, “This camp has a beautiful view of southern Cyrodiil, yet is far enough away from the gate that it is not marred by the Oblivion sky.”

“Lucilius and I chose this location because it allows a reserve force that is closer to the gate and provides another buffer protecting the lower encampment. This is primarily a camp for staging and sleeping. We keep the support services down the hill as you’ve already seen.”

“What’s Lucilius doing?” I pointed at the sergeant, surrounded by soldiers wearing a rainbow of surcoats.

“He’s assessing and training new arrivals,” Savlian replied. “They’ll each be assigned to one of our watch teams and begin serving on the line within a day or two. Lucilius has done a superb job implementing my guidance for the perimeter. Each team has what we’ve found to be a good mix of melee and ranged capability. And we now have enough manpower for a sustainable watch schedule.”

I took Savlian’s offered arm. As we continued our climb, the sky transitioned to the dark clouds and streaks of lightning that announced our nearness to the bane of Kvatch. We crested the plateau and there was the giant portal of fire blocking the city’s gate – just as menacing as I recalled.

The watch team on duty was comprised primarily of soldiers from various city guard forces. Most were armed with blade and shield, but archers were represented as well. The dark gray plate of one swordsman identified him as a heavy Legion soldier like one might encounter on horse patrol. I also recognized Raccan, in his steel plate and brandishing a staff.

An older looking Nord wearing a yellow surcoat approached. He slammed a gauntleted fist to the taloned black raptor on his chest. “Good afternoon, Captain. Oblivia’s been pretty quiet today.” He then looked at me curiously.

“Buffy, this is Bjorn,” Savlian said after lowering a bare fist from the Kvatch wolf on his chest. “He’s in command of this watch team and we’re thankful to have him from the great city of Bruma.” He then addressed the Nord. “Buffy’s been researching this damn thing and we’re hoping she can tell us how to close it. Give me your report please.”

Bjorn nodded his head formally to me then addressed Savlian. “As I said, sir, quiet today. We had one flame wench come out about an hour ago, but she never made it past the combined fire of our archers and Raccan’s staff. We harvested some flame salt from her and our team’s mage will deliver it to his guild after the shift.”

“Good work,” said Savlian. “How’s Raccan working out?”

“Them mages on the other teams are good, sir, but I figure mine’s worth his weight in Nordic whiskey. He can fry ‘em from range with his staff or get in close with that deadly magic claymore.”

Savlian pointed toward a young Imperial swordsman wearing the Great Oak of Chorrol. “Good to see Clagiu back on duty. Sigrid tells me his burns healed well.”

“Yes sir. She did a great job and I’ve given Clagiu some remedial shield training on blocking fireballs.”

“How’s the rest of your team fairing?” asked Savlian. “Need anything?”

“Given the circumstances, morale’s high.” After a grin, Bjorn continued, “It’ll be even higher when I tell ‘em you got an elf that can help close Oblivia. Sigrid keeps us well stocked on potions and tends to any scrapes or burns.” His eyes wandered over me before he jerked them back to Savlian. “In fact, when she comes up here in that blue gown to check on the soldiers, morale soars.”

Savlian smiled. “And how’s that arm of yours? The one you tried to feed to a clannfear.”

“Well, as you know, I fared better than he.” Bjorn moved his shield arm around freely. I noticed what appeared to be the claw of a clannfear hanging around his neck. “No permanent dam- “

His words were cut short by a shout from the line. A scamp had just burst through the flaming portal. Before its long fingers could fully gather the magicka for a fireball, the Daedra was struck by two arrows, then downed by a bolt of lightning that crackled from Raccan’s staff. I noted that the swordsmen held their position until the ranged attackers had loosed their fire. It was over in a matter of seconds. “Damn things,” said Bjorn as he returned his half drawn sword to its scabbard. He then drew a steel dagger from the other hip. “Would you excuse me, sir? Sigrid has asked us to harvest some of the skin from these scamps. She says with some coaxing, she can make poisons from it.”

Savlian replied, “Carry on, Bjorn.” He then looked at me as the Nord strode off to his gory task. “Poison from scamp skin?”

I nodded. “Yes, a skilled alchemist like Sigrid can do that.”

“I’d like to stay up here and spend some time with each of Bjorn’s team. Do you mind?”

“Not at all, Savlian. I can see why morale is high here. You’re wonderful with your soldiers.”

“Thank you, Buffy, but they do all the work and Lucilius shares much of the burden of command.”

“I’m just glad you have some help,” I said. “I’ll go back down the hill now. I could use something to eat after my trip. Being new here, I also want to spend some time fitting in with my guild.”

“Yes,” he replied. “I should be down there in a couple hours. After you’re settled in some more, would you join me in my tent? I’d like to hear what you’ve learned about our flaming gate.” His commanding manner yielded to a hint of awkwardness. “And I’d like to spend time with you.”

“I’ll be there, Savlian.” I lightly brushed his cheek with my fingertips, turned and headed down the hill. The song in my heart was almost as loud as the near continuous Daedric thunder. I knew this was where I belonged.

That was one interruption after another, no wonder he wants to speak in his tent !! It really gave the feel of exactly what one would expect it should be given the Kvatch situation (instead of just 5 men in front of a stick fence). Really Awesome job you are doing of world-building Kvatch - Love it !!! Awesome Write !!

A very tender segment as Buffy and Savlian get some much needed together-time. It was great to see how their feelings for each other continue to grow. biggrin.gif

I very much enjoyed the tour of the more violent side of the Kvatch encampment, as well. From the military brigades set up along the road not just to maintain a close presence to the Gate, but to intercept anything that, Gods forbid, makes it past the barricade. Savlian does have a good head for command on his shoulders. smile.gif

Looking forward to the coming alone time between Buffy and Savlian. They need it after everything they've been through.
