American Dad, Family Guy, and The Cleveland Show are all created by the same people.

They occasionally bring characters from the other two shows in and do cameos. Stan Smith is completely different from Joe. Joe works for the police and has a totally different personality.

They infrequently bring in various characters just for fun because people love cameos.

All of those shows(Family Guy,American Dad and the *shudders* Cleveland Show) are some of my least favourite shows on TV.
