One of my finest moments in my stepson's eyes was when he and a friend came across a LARGE snapping turtle that had crawled out of a nearby farm pond, due to the drought we were having that year.

They were afraid it would get hit in the road... and also wanted us to see it.

So- I drove up to look... and in best Turtle-Man fashion- grabbed it up by the tail.

As I did so- I mentioned "This is the only way to handle them- because..."

About that time, the head snaked sideways- toward my leg- and I added

"You also want to keep it AWAY from yourself."

Holding a highly-annoyed reptile at arm's length is quite a lot like exercise.

Anyway- we loaded the snapper into the back of my pickup. It was large enough that it could hook its front legs over the top of the tailgate.

So I drove down a busy 4-lane, tapping the brakes to stop it from climbing out and splatting itself. Took it to the folks' house on the lake and backed up to a slope with the tailgate open.

An hour later- the turtle had turtled off to the water.

I don't go swimming down there anymore...

Your story reminds me of when we saw an enormous snapping turtle outside one of the doors at church. It was a clear glass door, and the turtle just kind of...sat there. But it was weird because it was frozen in this "Ew, GET IT AWAY!" pose, like leaned to the left with the right front leg raised and the mouth open lol

I hate turtles. I had a small one snap onto my finger and hang on for half an hour when I was a kid.

I will do you one better.

I had one grab my NOSE.

Which was my own (5-year-old) fault for sticking my nose that close to its beak.
