Due to my recent experience where I got a trojan that effectively blocked me from using my computer and threatening me with heavy fines or jailtime (unless I paid a smaller fine, of course ), I thought I'd start a thread where we could discuss the various computer problems we've had. Perhaps we could give each other some hints and tips on how to solve them I solved my problem thanks to the wonderful feature built into Windows where you reset your computer to an earlier save point. To get to that program even though my computer was locked I had to fire up my computer in failsafe mode (pressing F8 during startup), choose Failsafe Mode with Command prompt, exit from that and do the Ctrl-Alt-Delete thing to bring up the activity menu from where I could search for the C:/ directory and from there find the program where you make a save point/reset to a save point. (Apologies if my explanation is a bit clunky ) This post has been edited by mirocu: Nov 25 2017, 10:15 PM

Have you tried Safari? It's supposed to be compatible with many things. I use Waterfox myself (a low memory variant of Firefox).

QUOTE(Renee @ May 26 2022, 12:46 PM) Ah, I forgot all about Safari. Never heard of Waterfox. So that's two ideas I can look into. Thanks!
If Firefox didn't work for you, Waterfox won't work either. Like I said, it's the same as Firefox, only uses a lot less memory. You could also try Opera and Midori. This post has been edited by Lena Wolf: May 26 2022, 03:17 PM

I bought a 2TB M2:NVME drive almost a month ago, but couldn't drum up the enthusiasm/courage to install it. Until today. I was a bit apprehensive, as it replaces my boot drive. My PC has only two M2:NVME slots, both occupied. The plan was to:
...Remove the second M2:NVME drive ...Place the new drive in its slot ...Clone my current M2: NVME boot disk onto the new drive ...Remove the clone ...Restore the second M2:NVME to its slot ...Swap out the original 500GB book disk for its clone.
I own EaseUS Partition Master, which makes cloning boot disks simple and theoretically foolproof. This proved the case today. All went like clockwork. My difficultly was with the physical aspects of the operation. My computer ain't lightweight. Manhandling it, twice, to add/remove drives, as well as the video card (to reach M2:NVME slot 1), bordered on more than I can handle these days. But handle it I did.
That done, I tackled a long postponed storage disk housekeeping chore. My physical hard disk's H partition, where I keep permanent file downloads (like Train Simulator payware locomotives), was all but full. EaseUS Partition Master handles this too. I was able to resize/move three partitions, shrinking one while expanding another, without damaging stored data. Being an old-style physical drive, the process was molasses slow.
My PC now sports the new 2TB M2:NVME, the 500GB second M2:NVME, and a 2TB physical drive.
The new 2TB M2:NVME is last gen. Current gen equivalents of its size were, at time of purchase, more than I was willing to spend. In any case, my PC sees no benefit from the extra speed current gen M2:NVME drives provide.

Good luck with that! DVD drive replacement is usually straightforward, although one must never take computer issues too lightly... (Definitely not talking from experience here. Who - me? Never. Nope.)

I haven't seen one of those in ... gosh I don't know how long, must be 30-years. I too still own one. It's housed at the back of a cabinet drawer along with some old teeny-tiny hard drives from former PC bulids, too small to be worth transferring when the time came to assemble newer machines. I also have one 8" floppy disk, given me by a long-ago acquaintance, despite my never having owned an 8" drive. I've no idea where it's stored. The Nvidia RTX3070, 3070ti and 3080 are at last becoming almost affordable, though far costlier than they ought to be this far into their production cycle, with RTX4000-series cards not terribly far off. I originally toyed with acquiring an RTX3080, but even its SRP is too rich for me, much less its absurdly high asking price, thanks to 'mining'. Even the 3070 has been far beyond my means. I'm keeping my eyes on the RTX3070ti. If the price drops enough, I just might take the plunge. Then again, maybe not. I'm a bit worried about the RTX4000-series predicted power draw, which is said to be substantial (compared to equivalent 3000-series cards). With energy prices (among other things) what they are now, I don't know that I want to invest in something that will eat me alive in utility bills. Assuming the power rumors are true. Truth is, I don't know that I'm gaming enough at the moment to justify a GPU upgrade. My GTX1070 remains a decent card at 1080p, though I do need to reduce a graphics quality slider every now and again.
