I've been playing the Burning Springs expansion lately and I got to say...it's quite underwhelming. Even calling it an expansion suggests it has more content than it actually does. Supposedly there are going to be a couple more updates soon, but come on.
Here are some of my thoughts on it--the good, bad, and the mixed:
- While BGS talked about it being the "biggest expansion yet," that seems to be stretching the truth. I guess if you count the variety of enemies you can encounter in Bounty Hunts, it might be the biggest expansion. But geography-wise, the Shenandoah Valley is bigger.
- Speaking of bounty hunts, those are an interesting new mechanic that I hope gets expanded upon. They are pretty fun to do.
- A lot of regular enemies are much tougher, which is good...except sometimes they're still just bullet sponges.
- The main story is bland and not even resolved at the end, though I guess the latter will come with the next updates. But right now, it's pretty cookie-cutter and the twist wasn't surprising. There's also not much build-up.
- There is, however, an interesting (but sad) story related to Abraxodyne (who makes the cleaning chemicals). Yet the way that you progress the story--by finding briefcases of Abraxodyne intel scattered around Burning Springs and then decrypting it--is tedious.
- Speaking of which, there is some intriguing side lore to find throughout the map. I just wish there was more lore in general.
- The concept of Highway Town is really cool, though. I just wish there was more to do there.
- The locations overall would be much more interesting if there was more stuff included in each of them, even a short quest. Of course, there are stories in terminals and notes, but it would be nice if there was more meat on the bone. And an actual DUNGEON to enter.
- And that's the big thing overall: There isn't a lot of UNIQUE stuff to do, at least not yet.
