Julian LeFay Passes Away Aged 59 — July 22, 2025


Julian LeFay, the core game director, programmer, and designer at Bethesda Softworks in the 1980s and '90s, has passed away tonight. LeFay was considered the chief imagineer behind The Elder Scrolls series during his tenure at the studio, being the project director behind Arena, Daggerfall, and Battlespire, contributing to the programming, gameplay mechanics, and lore design of the series. An in-depth statement has been posted by OnceLost Games, a company Julian co-founded.

<sighs> He's probably forgotten by the gaming public at large, but for me, his passing is a saddening event. And so young! I vaguely recall that, some years ago, he was part of a small team that intended to produce a "modern-day" Daggerfall-like game. Alas, as is usual, nothing came of it.

Terence Stamp General Zod from Superman 1 & 2, as well as Chanslor Valorum and the Prophet Guy in Halo 3 has sadly passed away. All Knee before Zod one last time.

Time catches us all, I suppose. I'll have to watch the movie Sneakers soon. That was one of my favorites that he starred in.

One of my favourite actors, Diane Keaton, has passed aged 79. I have so many memories in my life that are tied to her films.

She was one of the great ones. Her style seems so natural, it was always fun to watch her. It’s hard to believe she’s gone.
