Previously- The seer Dagail urged Buffy, after Kynareth sends her to where and when she must go, to contact the much younger Dagail at the Leyawiin guild hall. Kud-Ei decided to swim back to Bravil from the University and asked Buffy to transport her belongings and borrowed mare back to Bravil. Buffy learned that the Elder Council selected Countess Bruma’s son to be the next ruler of Kvatch. Buffy left the University and headed back to Bravil. * Rider- Thank you! I am indeed taking some liberties with lore regarding Bosmer lifespans. In Buffy Lore, Altmer, Dunmer and Bosmer all can live 800 - 1000 years. I think the only time we’ve gotten so specific before was way back in Book 1 when Buffy was describing her dental hygiene regimen – she emphasized such care was important because her teeth could last her perhaps as long as 1000 years. I’m glad you mentioned Buffy’s conversation with Acadian as reminiscent of the student becoming the master – I had hoped for that reaction. Lopov- Young Dagail will one of those characters who is a joy to write. I think you will enjoy her. During Book 1, we portrayed Countess Carvain similarly to how she is in the game – as a basically competent ruler. Hopefully her son will work out but we don't have plans to pursue that. Thank you! ghastley- Thanks! Buffy will be gone before the Council’s decree about the Mages Guild and University actually manifests so there is, I suppose, a bit of wiggle room as far as how it all works out. macole- Thank you for the comments! I envision Dagail to be about 770 years old when Buffy leaves the early Fourth Era and about twenty when Buffy next sees her in the Second Era. SubRosa- You are right that we’ll leave Kvatch’s future open. Bags and trunks of holding are wonderful! I’m so glad you enjoyed the scene with Buffy and the young Apprentice whose arcane training will be cut short. I wanted to really put a personal face on the impact of the Council’s decision. A bit more of that impact in today’s episode. Thank you! Renee- Thanks for your comments and questions. In Book 3, Buffy looked back on her less than successful grieving for Savlian in Bravil, describing how she drank too much wine, her lonliness made her flirt (unsuccessfully) with promiscuity, and she neglected her house. Were it not for her drive to take care of Superian and the support of Acadian, she confessed to us that she likely would have just walked out in the Niben to drown herself. Fortunately, Daenlin and Kud-Ei intervened just in time and forced her to move into her guild where they could keep an eye on her. It worked and gave her the time to mostly recover without further self-risk. Grits- Thank you! I think that discussion between Acadian and Buffy near the end is the first time Buffy has acknowledged that she considers her family to be herself, Acadian and their dragonmare. I suppose that does limit her enemys’ ability to target her family members. Of course though, we know those she calls friend are nearly as dear to her. * * * Episode 6 It was midafternoon and starting to rain by the time I delivered the mare that Kud-Ei had asked me to return to the Bravil stable. Superian traveled in spirit form within me as my feet carried me through the town’s muddy streets to the guildhall. Not surprisingly, the mages within were long faced. I did not stop to chat though as I made my way downstairs to the guild’s large bath with its constantly circulating hot water fed by an underground spring. After a long soak, I emerged back upstairs in the robe of a mage, with my hair fully combed out to dry and loose over my shoulders. Our two cooks were just starting to serve dinner as I joined my fellow mages at our dining table. “You know,” Delphine Jend broke the morose silence, “I’ve a mind to march right up to the Imperial City and blow up the whole damn Elder Council. Idiots!” “And I do not doubt your ability to do so, Delphine,” Kud-Ei replied calmly. “I also have no doubt that you have the wisdom to realize that, although we each feel as you do, such a destructive display would be counterproductive and simply reinforce fears about the guild. Can you pass that bowl of pasta this way please?” A deflated Delphine uttered, “I guess you’re probably right, Kud-Ei.” Then she added, “Bastards!” Ita Reinus said, “In the words of the great mage Shalidor, ‘Mages are envied their power, and reviled for using it'.” “Never more true than now,” added Carandial, pointing the piece of bread in his hand at Ita for emphasis. Ardaline, who had been quietly pushing food around her plate asked, “Guildmagister, have you decided what we will do yet?” Kud-Ei lowered her fork. “I want all of us to have a hand in that decision, but I propose we replace our guild signs with ones that say simply ‘Magic Emporium’ and continue to do business just like any other shoppe that deals in the arcane.” “Guildmagister,” I asked over the rim of my goblet, “would that not readily be seen as simply skirting around the Council’s ignorant decree?” “I don’t think so, Buffy,” replied Kud-Ei. “What the Council fears is the centralized command and control the guild exerts over a large network of mages spread across many locations.” I could feel my anger rising. “But that command and control is exactly what enabled our battlemages and healers to provide fire support and healing to the Legion at the right times and places they needed it most during the Oblivion Crisis. Had the Legion not had such support from our guild, I can attest firsthand that the Battle for Bruma would likely have been a defeat instead of a victory.” “Buffy has a good point, Guildmagister,” said Ardaline. “She does indeed,” replied Kud-Ei. “Which is exactly why I believe the Council’s unfounded paranoia will not find fertile soil with my proposal. We would be a local, independent shoppe like any other. As I said though, you all deserve a hand in whatever decision we make. Alternatively, I suppose we could sell the facility and divide the proceeds to start anew in whatever endeavors each of us chooses.” “I’ve heard enough,” declared Delphine. “Kud-Ei is right. The Magic Emporium it should be. As long as we can still sell my Enemies Explode spell.” There were nods all around the table. “Well that settles it,” said Kud-Ei. “There will be much coordination and work required but the path before us is clear. Now, how about some of that gorapple pie before it gets cold?” After dinner, I conjured my lute and entertained us with a song. Its words and melody were somber but also offered hope. It was getting late as we each straggled off to our beds. In the middle of the night, from a sound sleep, I suddenly sat straight up with a start, inadvertently knocking Kitsune to the floor. ‘ What is it, Buffy?’ asked Acadian telepathically. I glanced at the bed next to me. Ardaline had not awakened. I then whispered my response, “Kynareth wants to see me at sunrise. Along the river again.” * Sunrises along the Niben were beautiful and this one was no exception. “Good morning, my paladin.” I turned to greet Kynareth. Rather than her imposing and glowing winged presence, the Sky Goddess appeared in her more mundane form. She appeared to simply be an attractive Nordic woman with long blond plaits in a simple dress and strappy sandals that one might wear shopping around town. “Good morning, My Lady.” “I have consulted with Akatosh,” she began, “about the possibility of having you intervene in the Second Era to stop this Drodda from destroying the last part of Phantom that we have – her spirit. He is willing to provide me the power to get you there if you are willing to accept this quest.” “Is not each of the Divines all powerful on their own?” I asked, more from curiosity than boldness. “No,” she replied. “Despite what many believe, our powers are not without limits. We excel at creation but do indeed have limits at manipulating those creations. Our strongest approach to such challenges is to share our power with each other when needed. I have consulted the Dragon God of Time for our contemplated time travel, just as he would consult me as the Sky Goddess if he required a thunderstorm or to block Magnus from the sky. You should know the details of what is involved before you decide to accept this quest.” “First,” I asked, “what is the risk to both Phantom and Superian if we do not intervene?” “Within the next year or so, Phantom’s spirit will be drained, and the last trace of her that now resides within your mare will simply cease to exist. An emotional loss, particularly for both Acadian and myself. Regarding Superian, the loss of Phantom’s spirit – as intertwined as it has become with that of your mare – would be similar to you losing the spirit of Acadian.” My heart froze. “M-My Lady, I would perish without Acadian’s spirit fully intertwined with mine.” “Yes,” she replied gently, “just as Superian cannot survive without Phantom.” “Then I accept this quest.” “Buffy, you do not yet know the risks or details.” “My Lady, when it comes to protecting those who are precious to me, I do not count the cost.” Kynareth nodded. “I have known that since your first encounter with Mazoga when she threatened to eat Superian. At a quarter her size, you stood toe-to-toe with a snarling orc ready to lay down your life defending your mare. You earned Mazoga’s lifelong respect that day. And mine. I just wanted you to remind yourself, for you must fully embrace this quest for it to succeed.” “Then embrace it I shall. But I would be foolish to not understand the details in advance.” “Let me share them with you then, starting with what can travel in time and what cannot. Acadian will travel with you of course. Your dragon mare also, as long as she is in spirit form while you actually travel through time. Any physical objects that did not exist during the Second Era, however, will be lost.” I cringed. “My clothes, jewelry, mage pouch of holding. . . .” "I am afraid so," she said. A thought occurred. “What of the summonable storage trunk gifted to me by Sanguine?” “I’m quite certain Sanguine created that well before the Second Era, so yes, it should make the trip. None of its contents will though.” “And my summonable bow?” “Your bow did not exist, so no. In fact, even though bows were powerful weapons, during the Second Era, they lacked the extreme range you are accustomed to. Continue your questions.” I frowned. “How about my spells?” “That is more complicated Buffy, for magic was very different in the Second Era. Most notably, spells cast to harm enemies did not damage allies. That is, no friendly fire; that ability was lost early in the Third Era. There have been other significant changes as well. The schools of Alteration, Restoration and Conjuration have not changed very much though, so most the spells from those schools that you already know will be available to you. Destruction has evolved a great deal but your limited ability with simple spells of that school should be fine. The biggest impact on your magic is that the school of illusion simply did not exist during the Second Era – so none of your illusion spells will serve you.” Though I wanted to scream, ‘But I’m a troll-be-damned master illusionist and sniper!’ I restrained myself to saying, “That does present a problem, My Lady, for without illusion spells and sniping from extreme range, I question my ability to survive in combat. Certainly not at the level required to destroy a powerful ice mage.” “Be at ease, Buffy. I can provide a weapon, spells and even some advice that I believe will serve you well.” “Trust our Divine, Buffy,” offered Acadian. “She will not disappoint you.” I sighed. “I think I understand what can go and what cannot.” Kynareth nodded. “It will take several days for me to train you. That period would be a good time to plan your goodbyes. Remember our discussion about the risks inherent with time travel. I’d urge that you not share that aspect of your journey unless absolutely essential to the success of your quest.” I nodded. “I’d like us to meet here each morning at sunrise that we may get you trained and equipped. And Buffy?” “Yes, My Lady.” “I am proud of you.” I blushed, but before I could speak she was gone. “I am proud of you as well, Buffy,” remarked Acadian. “Thank you. “I’m sad, excited and terrified all at the same time.” Superian nudged me affectionately – as if she knew help was on the way for her spirit mate.

What a scene. Delphine wants to destroy the Elder Council with her Enemies Explode spell. Kud Ei warns Jend this isn't a good idea. I have a feeling Delphine wasn't being serious though. I hope not! Hmm, well actually, Kud Ei's suggestion might work. Continue as a business instead of a guild. This way, no one loses their jobs. Not as grand as being part of an officially-sponsored entity spreading all across the land, but this is as good as it gets, anyway. Ha ha yeah, Enemies EXPLODE! I'm laughing, but I feel like there's a bit of foreshadowing in this conversation at their dinner table. Especially as past events have been mentioned, like the swarms of Daedra which only recently invaded the land. Can't quite see where this foreshadowing could be; which snippet of conversing it occurs within. I feel like it's there, though. I just wonder if the council will allow this Magic Emporium to even exist, now. Buffy knocks her fox to the floor! I've done that a few times with my cat. It's because they lie so darn close to us sometimes! Right, Aedra are not all-powerful... It gets complicated, but lore states the Aedra were actually created by Daedra. And they aren't as omniscient and omnipotent as we think. I'm thinking in matchbook terms, though. Can't remember how it all happened in lore. Cripes. She'll lose it all if "Yes" is pressed. QUOTE “Your bow did not exist, so no. In fact, even though bows were powerful weapons, during the Second Era, they lacked the extreme range you are accustomed to OH gosh. Yeah, this. Off-topic now, but Anyway, how clever. So this is how the 2nd Era's going to be portrayed in Book 4. Buffy's going to need to start all over from scratch. Previously- The Bravil Mages Guild branch decided to become an independent store selling much the same services they currently do. Buffy met with Kynareth. The two agreed that getting Buffy to the Second Era was possible and that Buffy was willing to go. Kynareth then described what could and could not travel with Buffy, as well as some of the differences in how magic and combat works in the Second Era. * Rider- Thank you! Yes, it looks like, under Kud-Ei’s superb leadership, the Bravil guild should be able to transition to a successful independent magic shoppe. Having a bow range so long you needed to zoom in to see the target in TES 4/5 was wonderful. As I’m sure you know, Archers in ESO can do fine but more as skirmish archers instead of snipers. SubRosa- I’m glad you agree with how wise and skilled a Guildmagister Kud-Ei is – that is exactly how I’ve tried to portray her. That episode was a nice opportunity to review the length Buffy will go to for those she holds dear, as well as review her early rocky start with Mazoga. I will try to present the game differences between TES 4/5 and ESO as ‘realistically’ as practical, but some bits just come down to ‘that’s the way it is’ or ‘hey, its magic!’. No friendly fire in ESO is a perfect example. Further, ESO is a dynamic world that evolves; everything changes over time, including the details of combat. Combat in ESO is satisfying but quite complicated and rather gimmicky, relying on careful character building/equipping and player skill with all the mechanics. None of that writes very well/realistically, so Buffy’s combat will hopefully be recognizable to those who play ESO and definitely feel ‘TES’, but with many liberties to avoid the MMO quirks of ESO. Thanks for reading! Renee- Though Buffy will be gone, I suspect the Magic Emporium, under Kud-Ei’s leadership, will prosper – as long as she doesn’t try to expand or franchise it out to other cities. Losing all the stuff a girl’s gotta have to travel back in time will be tough for Buffy. Bows in the Second Era have the same range as mage staves and that is shorter than we’re used to in TES 4/5. Although there are a couple tricks to boost bow range a bit, it is still way below where a zoom in feature to see your target is necessary. You are right that relying on a bow as your only weapon in ESO is challenging and can be quite frustrating for newer players. That said, with patience, practice and careful ‘build crafting’ details, a mystic archer can be very successful in ESO. As ever, thank you for your insightful comments. Your unique perspective often causes me to really think through and reexamine things. Grits- Thank you for quoting Buffy’s rationale for accepting the quest before she even knew the details. Yes, she is quickly learning what she’ll have available to her in the Second Era. Over the next few episodes, Buffy will choose the general type of magic she’ll use, then gain a new weapon and some spells to serve her. Then it will be time for some goodbyes as she prepares to depart for her quest. Lopov- I enjoy weaving actions in with dialogue like trying to give life to the mages’ dinner that they were indeed having a meal while talking. Thank you! Buffy’s combat will change greatly but her challenges won’t – destroying foes while trying to keep her fragile little body intact. *** Episode 7 As Kynareth and I gazed across the Niben watching a beautiful sunrise, she said, “Buffy, I can bestow upon you one of several blessings inspired by my domains of sky and forest. Any one of them can adequately support you in the Second Era. They are the blessings of Storm, Holy Light or Forest.” “That sounds like a very important choice,” I replied, “and challenging because I don’t know what they entail.” Kynareth nodded. “It is your decision, but I may be able to help guide you. Can you describe how the roles of archer, mage and healer have evolved in your life?” “As you know, My Lady, I was trained to the bow. Given my size and lack of strength, my archery master realized I would never be able to defend myself in close quarters with melee weaponry. That’s why he brought me to the guild of mages. With Kud-Ei’s instruction in illusion and, much later, Boderi Farano’s guidance at the Arcane University, I became an effective mystic archer. Over time, I have learned that I can survive without my bow. . . but not without my spells.” She nodded encouragement for me to continue. “Since healing Sir Agronak from the brink of death after the Oblivion Crisis and becoming your paladin, I’ve come to another realization. Though I need to destroy foes that would harm those dear to me, I know now that my true calling is that of a healer.” She replied, “As a paladin, your ability to lay on hands enables you to heal as well as any priest, and better than most restoration mages when it comes to healing sickness or mending wounds after a fight. Because of the physical bond you must establish to use it, however, it is of little use during an active battle.” “I know,” I lamented. “My blessings offer, to varying degrees, the ability to provide healing during combat. Would that be of interest to you?” My eyes lit up. “More than almost anything!” Kynareth smiled. “I already knew your answers, Buffy, but wanted them to be clear in your mind as we discuss my blessings. Shall we begin?” “Yes, My Lady.” “Storm is much as the name says. It offers unparalleled damage. Much like a classic wizard, you would use the raw power of lightning to destroy your foes, while relying on magical warding and self-healing to protect yourself. Though not totally lacking at protecting or healing allies in combat, it primarily embraces the concept of a solo mage destroying her foes before they can destroy her.” “The best defense is a good offence?” I offered. “While I need the ability to vanquish my foes, I don’t fancy the lack of a robust ability to protect and heal allies.” “I thought you might feel that way,” she said. “Forest magic offers a better balance between damage and combat healing, albeit favoring offense. This blessing calls upon the magic inherent within my forests to bring both flora and fauna to your aid. It does require some timing to use properly and you would fight alongside a forest guardian.” “That sounds a bit busy. . . but having a guardian occupy foes while I deliver damage from range might be quite helpful,” I commented. “A wise strategy, Buffy,” she replied, “but know that sophisticated foes will recognize the guardian for what it is and focus their ire upon the mage responsible.” I frowned. “Much like I focus my attacks on a summoner rather than their summons.” Kynareth nodded. “The blessing of Holy Light is inspired by the power of Magnus itself to both nurture and destroy. It offers the most robust spells for combat healing. Several of its spells offer multiple simultaneous benefits. Even its offensive abilities provide some level of support for you and your allies while still providing solid damage. “I quite like the sound of that. Can I choose more than one blessing?” I asked. “Yes and no,” replied Kynareth with a chuckle. “While you can learn more than one, you may only have one active at a time. Changing among them requires me to lay hands upon you, as well as a period of quiet meditation on your part. It also takes time and practice to become proficient with each; time we perhaps do not have in abundance. Let us choose one for now and focus on mastering it.” “Acadian,” I said, “every big decision I make affects both of us, and I imagine you have some experience with Our Lady’s blessings. I’d value your counsel.” “Buffy, I have watched you evolve and grow over the years,” he began. "While you do need a balance between healing allies and conquering foes, I know the lengths you will go to in protecting others. I believe Holy Light best suits your goals.” “My conclusion as well, Acadian. Thank you.” I then smiled and declared, “My Lady, I would ask for your blessing of Holy Light.” Kynareth smiled. “A wise choice, Buffy. Elegant even. Now, are you ready to set aside much of the old and learn some new things?” “I am.” I took her lead and stood when she did. Kynareth looked around. “This place is rather exposed considering the unfamiliar displays that some of your training will entail. Take my hand and we’re away to a grotto near my shrine in the forest west of the Imperial City.” As I took her hand, the world wavered and changed around me. Suddenly we were in a large cavern. There were gaps overhead that allowed enough light to support numerous mosses, shrubs, grasses and even a few saplings. “We will not be disturbed here,” she said.

Ooooh, so Buffy is going to be a Templar! Having played a magplar (Templar class, magicka focus - that is, surprisingly, my ESO Argis the Bulwark), I know how much fun it is to play! And, yes, having played archers in both Oblivion and especially Skyrim, it was tough adapting to ESO archery. However, I agree that with careful build creation, it is possible to create powerful archers. I'm interested in how Buffy learns to adapt to the differences between 2E and late 3E archery.
As always, you continue to show us how Buffy and Acadian grow and adapt to different challenges. SGM!

Wait, Buffy is going to join the The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon? Well, I know which blessing out of Storm, Holy Light or Forest January would choose... Buffy's dual professions as archer and healer remind me of Apollo, who was also a god of archery and healing. He could take life on one hand, or save it with the other. As soon as I read the description of Holy Light, I knew that was the one Buffy would take. It suits her best.

I like this approach. Buffy's not going to arrive with no skills at all, and spend months getting up to speed (as in riding lessons). I eagerly await her first experience of wayshrines, and the frustration of not knowing the one where she wants to go.

I just accidentally read some comments, and whoa, she joins the Templar Class (think it's a class). I know there are several 'versions' of Buffy though. Some are adept at archery, others better at wizardry as I recall. Ah, so we DO Need to upgrade archery. Through crafting though, not a buyable DLC pack like I guessed. That's actually a good thing to know, assuming I'll ever return to Ana Khannda. Your unique perspective often causes me to really think through and reexamine thingsSorry! I do delve a little too deep, sometimes. Might annoy some ppl. But I also enjoy when other readers cause me to reexamine my own characters. This means I'm getting a fresh perspective which needs consideration. Sounds like the start of ESO, those choices of Holy Light and so on. Not sure; haven't played ESO since 2021. But for sure, Buffy's probably going to explain the rather unique spells she made, such as the one which makes her invisible, yet a clannfear takes her place. 🦖 WOW... "I can survive without my bow, but not without my spells!" Didn't expect that. Oh yeah, she wants to continue being a Healer. If any of this is based on ESO, she'll have plenty to do in that scenario. Hmm, I'm not seeing her taking Storm. If January Ward was being asked the same, she'd choose Storm though! ---- “While I need the ability to vanquish my foes, I don’t fancy the lack of a robust ability to protect and heal allies.” --- Correct, she's got her Bow for 'vanquishing'. Forest Magic seems more her thing, being a Wood Elf and all, even though she's from Bravil, she's already visited Valenwood. --- “That sounds a bit busy. . . but having a guardian occupy foes while I deliver damage from range might be quite helpful,” I commented. --- Oookay. And what about Holy Light? "You can only have one active at a time..." --- A ha. So this could be why there's more than "one" Buffy IF this is being based on online. I love the ending part, when Kynareth guides her to this mysterious new location. This post has been edited by Renee: Oct 8 2024, 05:51 PM

Previously- Buffy and Kynareth discussed the Divine blessings that would inspire Buffy’s magic during her journey to the Second Era. After learning about the blessings of Storm, Forest and Holy Light and consulting with Acadian, Buffy chose Kynareth’s blessing of Holy Light. Kynareth then teleported them to a secluded grotto to begin Buffy’s training. * Rider- Buffy will indeed resemble a Templar mage. We actually maintain a handful of variants of Buffy in ESO – all identical except for class. That is what Kynareth alluded to about eventually learning and moving among multiple blessings. SubRosa- Stormcrow would certainly be a Stormmage in ESO! I’m glad Kynareth’s description of Holy Light struck you as more ‘Buffy’ than the other blessings, as healing has become more and more central to who she is. Lopov- Thanks for agreeing with Buffy’s choice to start out with the blessing of Holy Light. The next couple episodes will focus learning her new unique weapon and spells. ghastley- Thanks. There will be so much new for Buffy in the 2nd Era, having the basics of combat worked before she goes will ease her transition. Yup, she’ll have fun with wayshrines! Renee- Thanks! In Buffy’s long evolution, she will indeed someday master more than one blessing and weapon, but only be able to use one combination at a time. In ESO, our Forest blessing is represented by the Warden class. Because it is a weird combination of ice and Morrowind flora/fauna but has a bear companion, it requires a lot of head canon to actually fit Buffy. Holy Light blessing (Templar class), though suits a classic combat healer nicely. You are right in that there are plenty of opportunities to heal in ESO. That is what helped Buffy’s naturally nurturing nature really blossom into the realization that healing is her true calling. * * * Episode 8 As I looked around Kynareth’s grotto, she said, “Before we move to spells, let us equip you with a weapon that will serve you in the Second Era.” After clearing her throat, she stated with an air of formality, “Dame Buffy, let me introduce you to Carsomyr the Holy Avenger – the weapon every one of my paladins has carried.” With a wave of her hand a blue shimmering sword appeared in front of us. The blade hovered vertically with its pommel nearly resting on the ground. The distance to its tip was greater than my height. I bit my lip to keep from saying anything as I looked askance at the wavering form of the beautiful but totally inappropriate – for me – two handed sword. It was Acadian who spoke – before I could cry or put my foot in my mouth. “It is good to see you again, old friend. Last you filled my hands you took the form of an arming sword and shield, for that is what I needed. But I know that this is the way Zenithar forged you and Kyne enchanted you so long ago. I know also that you will join with this newest paladin of Kynareth and quickly assume the most effective form to best serve her needs.” “Thank you, Acadian,” said Kynareth. “Buffy does not yet fully know me – or my rather whimsical sense of humor - and your words impart more to ease her mind than would mine.” Turning to me, she continued, “Though I confess to rather enjoying the predictably priceless look on your face, the old paladin speaks truly. Grasp Carsomyr and open your mind that it may learn your nature.” I squatted down and wrapped both hands around the weapon’s hand grip which was notably longer than my forearm. Doubting I would able to lift such a weapon I tried to stand. To my amazement, the sword nearly leaped into the air pulling me into a combat ready stance that would have done justice to a Nord warrior. Almost immediately I felt the weapon – Carsomyr – probing my mind and memories. I could tell it was examining and assessing every time I had been in combat, each patient I had healed or lost, every arrow I had loosed and spell I had cast. Even my recent conversation with Kynareth during which I had chosen her blessing of Holy Light. The link went both ways though, as images of Kynareth’s paladins past – one at a time - cycled through my mind. Some were mighty warriors, including Acadian. Others were mages wielding a variety of strange spells. I noticed that each carried the recognizable blue glowing Carsomyr whether in the form of axe, blade, bow, staff, mace or daggers. The flood of information between the weapon and I eventually slowed to a stop. I realized my eyes were closed and opened them to see my hands wrapped around not the grip of a massive blade, but a magic staff. The weapon remained slightly taller than I and retained its blue, wavering ethereal glow. “Carsomyr is a part of you now,” Kynareth’s words drew my mind back to the grotto. “Though it will not speak to you, the weapon is ancient and has seen enough that it has become a living spirit. In your case it joins the other spirits you carry within. Though, like both you and I, Carsomyr can change and evolve, it has chosen to serve you in the form of a powerful staff – for now. It knows the spells I will teach you and is a fine complement to them. Equally important to its ability to damage foes, it serves as a focus for your magicka. You will find that with Carsomyr in your hand, your spells will be more effective.” She smiled and pointed at one wall of the cavern, where I saw a wooden target that had not been there before. “Try it.” I held the staff in my right hand and leveled it at the target. Nothing happened. I wiggled it slightly. Still nothing. “How do I make this work?” It was not Kynareth or Acadian who answered but, rather, Carsomyr itself. Not with words mind you, but I felt a small flow of magic from the staff travel up my arm. Suddenly, the knowledge I needed was clear. I envisioned launching magic to strike the target, and Carsomyr instantly responded to my will with a brief burst. I then wished for a more powerful attack and was rewarded by a continuous stream of magic into the target. “As you have just learned,” said Kynareth, “Carsomyr delivers either brief bursts, called light attacks, or longer streams of damage for several seconds. Those are called heavy attacks. I’m sure you have also noticed the weapon does not use your magicka for its attacks. In fact, its heavy attacks will actually restore magicka to you – worth remembering when rapidly casting spells. Working heavy attacks into your combat can do much to sustain your magicka. Now, try raising the weapon to block.” Grasping Carsomyr in both hands I raised it in front of me, positioned to block an attack. A translucent shield of golden light blossomed to life in front of the staff. “This shield,” I heard Kynareth say, “will ward you from any attack from your front. You are unable to cast spells, however, while so warded.” As I lowered the staff, the shield dissipated. I winced as recalled the last time I blocked with my weapon. My bow and left arm had been shattered, and I nearly lost my life. “I think Carsomyr and I shall get along famously.” “I hoped you would not be disappointed if Carsomyr determined that a staff might better serve your needs for now than a bow.” Her eyes revealed that her statement was meant as a question. “I confess some surprise, My Lady, but was it not I who said my spells were more important than my bow? You trust me to save our dragon mare’s spirit. As I prepare to venture into the unknown to do so, I will trust you and Carsomyr.” She smiled and I noted a bit of relief in her eyes. In truth, I wondered whether I would miss my bow. . . even the bowstring calluses that had marred the fingers of my right hand for so many years. I was glad for my choice of words though. They were true enough but, just as importantly, it was clear that my feelings on the matter were of concern to Kynareth; therefore, her feelings were of concern to me. “To dispel Carsomyr, open your hand,” she continued. “To conjure it again, simply think of the weapon. By the time you close your fingers, Carsomyr will fill your grasp.” As I opened my fingers the weapon disappeared. “We have accomplished much today, Buffy. I shall return you to Bravil now. Meet me on the bank of the Niben at sunrise. Tomorrow, I shall introduce you to your new spells.”

Whoa, she's got an Artifact! A Holy Weapon. ➕ Blade is taller than she is! How's she gonna wield it? Ah, but it's a magical sword. It 'assists' the fragile glasscannon elf to wield it. Cool. Can you post a pic of Buffy as a Templar? When Acadian speaks, lately I've been "hearing" Michael Caine as I read. Yikes. The sword is gathering her mind! Like a device uploading information. So when it says "some were mighty warriors, like Acadian" are you talking about when you initially play a game just to get to know it, before Buffy takes over? Okay, the sword has become a staff, phew. And.... this is quite a weapon. It's a mind weapon, in a way, not a muscle weapon. "I confess some surprise, My Lady, but was it not I who said my spells were more important than my bow? You trust me to save our dragon mare’s spirit. As I prepare to venture into the unknown...."Really am noticing speech patterns lately, the way the words are actually arranged. How there's a difference even between the way Buffy says things and Kynareth. I'm at work btw, but not due on the floor until 11:00. So that was a fun way to begin the morning. ☕☕ This post has been edited by Renee: Oct 9 2024, 03:46 PM

A Holy Avenger? Jinkies! That is the awesomest weapon of all fantasy RPGs! This scene reminds me of Elrond giving Anduril to Aragorn. They will answer to Kyne's Paladin! I love the background lore that Carsomyr adapts its form to suit the nature of its wielder. It is consistent with how some artifacts change between games in the ES series. It is also a really cool idea. Ah, so it has taken the form of a staff. That fits with ESO, and with Buffy's great focus on being a magician rather than an archer of late. I am sure Gandalf would be pleased.

Hmm...
Blue glow, and disappears when you release it. That rings a bell. I think I might have one like that, even if it doesn't decide what weapon it wants to be.

Previously- Kynareth introduced Buffy to Carsomyr – the weapon every one of her paladins has carried. Once Buffy grasped the weapon in its native great sword form, it learned her nature/aspirations and transformed into a magic staff. She learned the basics of how to use the new weapon before Kynareth called her training for the day complete with the promise to move on to spells the following day. * Renee- When Buffy thought Kynareth was giving her a giant two handed sword, the little elf almost wet herself. Yes, Carsomyr is quite a magical weapon – even more so in the form of a staff. Regarding Buffy’s speech patterns, she is quite skilled in speechcraft (part of the way she compensates for her unimpressive stature) and is acutely aware of who she is talking to. Though her default speech is quite informal, you’ll notice she shifts readily from more formal to informal speech mannerisms based on who she’s talking to. You may also notice that both Kynareth and Acadian consistently speak more formally. Similar to what you may have noticed with Blood Raven in SubRosa’s wonderful fiction. Not using contractions is one example of this. And, as requested, a couple screenshots: Carsomyr and BlockingSubRosa- I couldn’t resist going with the most famous weapon name in all of paladin lore. The concept of using a staff to help focus one’s magic is one I borrowed from you – thank you! We wrestled mightily as to whether to have Buffy begin her ESO adventuring as a staff wielding mage of Holy Light or a bow wielding Forest mystic archer. Eventually (beyond this book) she will master the ability to move from one to the other. ghastley- One thing I love about ESO is the almost limitless flexibility the game’s outfit/costume system allows. You can wear what you need to for performance but make it look however you want. Buffy literally changes the appearance of her outfit, hair and bling/accessories countless times a day to suit her environs or mood. Rider- Thank you! Buffy has always loved the idea of summoning/unsummoning her weapon. Currently, she spends her time almost evenly split between a templar staff healer and a warden bow healer. Both work well. She finds the former is easier to master and more group friendly; the latter is more complex to learn and does more damage. The feel is quite different though and she enjoys moving from one to the other. The ability to move among classes is also a survival requirement. Being a dynamic online game, classes are subject to changes for the good and bad. If one class changes for the worse, it is nice to have others already developed that continue to work well. In the long haul, it is almost a comically circular process. Nerf one class out of favor. Wait a year or two and it gets buffed back into favor. Lopov- Killing Firkraag to get Carsomyr in BG 2! I know it well! Thanks. Buffy does favor summoned weapons. Much nicer than having a staff or bow glued to her back when not fighting. It also allows her to not openly display her weapon but never be caught without. Grits- Thank you! I’m so glad that Buffy’s potential dismay at being offered a massive great sword came through clearly. Fortunately, Acadian knows her well enough to quickly intervene. * * * Episode 9 Kynareth and I stood facing each other in her grotto. “Close your eyes and open your mind, young paladin. I shall bestow my blessing of Holy Light upon you.” As I felt her hands upon my face, magic flowed into me. Images of Magnus traveling across the sky. Its gentle warmth caressing my skin. A concentrated beam of light being channeled into the chest of a clannfear until the beast burst apart. Casting spells with the knowledge of how to use this new magic to both heal allies and damage foes. Presently, I heard, “Open your eyes,” and Kynareth lowered her hands. I looked up at her. “I feel several quite unfamiliar spells now at my disposal.” She nodded. “Let me tell you what each of them does. Then we will spend some time letting you familiarize yourself with them.” “Spell Power Cure is a passive ability that you now inherently possess,” she began. “Whenever you heal yourself or an ally, their damage is increased for several seconds. Some of your active spells can provide continuous healing, allowing you to keep this effect active for an entire battle. You can readily verify when it is in effect by a lavender glow surrounding the arms of those affected.” “Regeneration is your first of five active spells. To cast it, spike your staff vertically into the air. It will seek up to three allies within visual range and provide them with continuous healing for a moderate duration.” “For Cleansing Ritual you strike the heel of your staff upon the ground to brand a large area around you for a significant duration. Allies standing within your ritual receive continuous healing, moderate damage shielding and the removal of any ill effects – including curses. The spell also has a unique contingency; that is, if for any reason your spellcasting is disabled, this spell will automatically be cast.” “You can cast Healing Ward upon yourself or any ally within visual range. It provides a very powerful ward and period of healing, but its duration is short and it costs a good deal of magicka. Unlike the warding provided to you when you raise Carsomyr to block, you can cast other spells while warded by this one.” My eyes opened wide. “Ranged heals! Long have I dreamed of such. I’ve always had to touch my allies to heal them.” She nodded. “Yes, but healing from distance is quite generic. It will keep an ally in the fight but is a far cry from the accurate diagnoses and precise healing you can accomplish by laying on hands.” “My Lady. . . so far, what you have described focuses on healing, protecting and boosting damage. Do your Divine spells provide damage as well or will my attacks come purely from Carsomyr?” “Both.” She replied. “As promised, Buffy, Holy Light excels at protecting and strengthening you and your allies. Even the last two spells I will describe, though primarily offensive, provide some degree of support.” “To cast Blazing Spear,” she continued, “you direct Carsomyr toward a spot on the ground. A spear of Holy Light will leave the weapon and, upon impact, shatter. The resultant shards linger and continuously damage all foes within the burst area, breach their defenses and briefly immobilize less powerful enemies. Most of its damage is delivered upon its initial burst, so casting the spell in rapid succession can prove very effective at quickly damaging groups of enemies. It also restores both stamina and magicka to allies within its radius.” A wave of relief washed over me. “Immobilizing enemies sounds like it will go a long way toward compensating for losing the ability to control foes with my illusion magic.” She held up a hand. “As I said, Buffy, it will not control more powerful enemies. Nor, you will find, can it immobilize those who can fly.” “But it is more powerful enemies that I fear the most,” I lamented. She lifted my chin until our eyes met. “Buffy, you have doubtless noted that most of the spells I have given you include provisions to help allies. You are at your best when supporting strong warriors in front of you. You know this to be true from your experience fighting alongside Savlian Matius or Sir Mazoga. You may be wise to cultivate such an ally in the Second Era.” I thought for a moment before replying. “Having someone besides myself benefit from the healing, shielding and damage boosting that these spells seem capable of does make sense. I will heed your words, My Lady.” “One last spell,” she said. “Radiant Glory is also cast through Carsomyr and channels a concentrated beam of Holy Light that inflicts high damage to a single target. It also transfers some of that target’s health to you. The damage increases dramatically as your foe gets closer to death. It is expensive to cast and best used when your enemy is significantly damaged – or when you are cornered and heavily wounded. Now, while my descriptions are still fresh in your mind, try casting your new spells.” I did so for a good part of the afternoon. I was used to channeling magicka down my right arm, gathering it in my fist then releasing it for normal spells. For these Holy Light spells, however, I held Carsomyr in my right hand, still channeled magicka through that arm but let it flow right into Carsomyr instead of gathering it in my hand. The weapon enhanced and focused that magicka before releasing my spell. During Carsomyr’s heavy attacks, the staff channeled some of its own seemingly limitless magicka to me. I began to learn how to use the new spells in combination with each other and even started to work out how to balance an effective tempo between staff attacks and spells that did not excessively deplete my magicka. Kynareth reminded me that my damage spells would not harm allies and informed me that neither would Carsomyr. I paused to slip free the leather thong that restrained my ponytail long enough to capture the errant tresses which had escaped during my practice session. Pondering the impressive synergy between my new spells and weapon, I began to understand the wisdom of Carsomyr manifesting as a staff to help me. Before I resumed, however, Kynareth stopped me. “You have done well, Buffy. Be assured there will be opportunities for combat to hone your skills before you locate Drodda, but I believe you will be ready to fight in the Second Era. Let me return you to Bravil. Tomorrow we will talk about the process of traveling back in time and decide when you will do so.”
