The new Xmen will be great. A sequel to Xmen 3 and First Class with both the young Magneto(Michael Fassbender) and the old one.

It will be great!

Need to watch the whole of First Class again...I didn't watch it properly when it was on the movie channels last time...I think I was having to go to work before it finished or something...But I enjoyed what I saw of it...Rose Byrne (Is that her name?...Moira McTaggart...)...Yes please!!...

Aaamywho, yes, looking forward to it...

Fassbender's supposed to be the star of this Assassin's Creed film they're doing...*Worries slightly*...

Um...

Oh yes, we saw The Raven the other night...John Cusack as Edgar Allen Poe...Bloody good film that...We'd enjoyed it at the cinema...And on TV it was no different...Brilliant stuff...

I heard the EAP movie was gawd awful. I wanna see it eventually, though.

I watched Secrets of the Dead: Dogfight Over Guadalcanal today. It was a good dissection of the dogfight between Saburo Sakai and Pug Sutherland. The show Dogfights went into better detail of the dogfight itself, which was a masterpiece between two outstanding pilots (Sakai became Japan's top ace of WWII). But SotD went into much more about what happened after the fight was over, such as the wounded Sutherland's trek through the Japanese-held jungle. Especially interesting was finding the remnants of his plane, and the evidence that one of his guns had been jammed from Japanese gunfire.

I like the Secrets of the Dead series. It is all over the place, but it usually does a very good job of whatever it decides to tackle. I saw the Lost in the Amazon episode a few weeks ago, and it was really intriguing. I also especially like the Amazon Warrior Women episode, that dug into the reality of females being part of the warrior aristocracy of Eurasian nomadic culture.

Yes, that one scene of Rose Byrne taking off her clothes and walking into the Hellfire Club in her undies was worth the entire movie... wub.gif

I liked The Raven too. That was a very cool movie.

Oh look...Is it my turn again...Yes...Apologies, but it's not my fault if no-one's watching anything... tongue.gif ...

Aaaamywho...Been a little busy with the old films the last couple of days...

We went to see the new Sandra Bullock one yesterday...The Heat...From the trailer, I was expecting one sort of film (the wife wanted to see this more than I did), but what I got was so much more...It really was a brilliant film...Yes, you get the Melissa McCarthy stuff...Swearing, violence etc...But you honestly get a decent plot and character stuff as well!!...It really was an excellent film...The soundtrack, although not really my sort of thing, was really good...Don't ask me to name the artists, but it's on iTunes so go look...Yes, hearty recommendation!...

Then, last evening we saw The Watch again...Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Richard Ayoade and Jonah Hill...Fantastic film!!...We absolutely loved it...Again!...So funny...Not entirely kiddie-proof so we had the chair-throws at the ready..."Now kids...NOW!!!"..."Aaand we're back..."... laugh.gif ...

And then, just now we watched Storage 24...Which is a low-budget Brit Sci-Fi written, Produced and heroed by Noel "Mickey the idiot" Clarke...It was cheap and cheerful, that much was obvious...But definately better than some mega-millions ones we've seen...Yes, that Noel was in it helped hugely...We've been fans since his stint in Doctor Who...But it was really well done for the money...And at 84 mins, it doesn't hang about...Well worth the price of a DVD...From the Tescos bargain bin...On a rainy sunday afternoon...Which...It currently is...

And shortly, the family will be watching Skyfall...I'll be off to work though...And then, when I get back...We find out WHO IS THE NEXT DOCTOR WHO!!!!...

*Cough*...

EDIT!!!...

Peter Capaldi...He's been in Doctor Who before...It's a different kind of choice...But, I'm very much pleased...I like him personally...The wife and the daughter are devastated that they don't get the totty...But still..I like him...

The wife's more upset because he's the bloke who shot his wife and daughters in Torchwood: Children of Earth...

I don't mind personally...It's not the same character...Unlike Captain Jack... mad.gif ...
SubRosa
Well I was only off by one category. I don't recall anything this Capa-whathisname has been in. But he was fun in the Pompeii episode. So hopefully he will work out.

Wow, lots of Cap'n Jack hate. Don't blame the character, blame the writer. I just pretend that Children of Earth and Miracle Day never happened. Life - and Torchwood - is much more enjoyable that way. I still love Jack.

Going to watch (on TV) John Carter tonight. The critics panned this one badly, but the book that the movie is based on was the first sci-fi book I ever read...A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs, written in 1917. I was just a kid (11?) and loved it so much that I went on to read the entire Mars series by the author. I saw a grade Z movie of the same title (A Princess of Mars) on the SyFy channel, and it sucked. Traci Lords played the heroine, Dejah Thoris...she should have stuck to soft porn where she belongs. I'll let you know how Disney did with their rendition later tonight.

I saw it (the movie), not bad. The characters were well done and the premise good. It could be watched twice without it palling, but was not one that will end a classic/epic/favorite/etc.

I saw "V For Vendetta" the other day, not bad at all.

ThatSkyrimGuy
Well, I am back with my review of John Carter. If one had never read the book, then I guess it was okay. But since I have read the book, I was disappointed. I will say it was far better than what SyFy Channel did with it, but given the money that Disney spent (and lost) making it, I would have liked the script to follow the original manuscript more closely.

If any of you are sci-fi/fantasy readers, (beyond these forums tongue.gif ), I highly recommend the series. They are all short, easy reads, averaging 200 pages per book.

I feel someone who doesn't actually like wrestling would enjoy this, well the first disc since the other 2 discs are all matches.

He had a tough up bringing and the whole DVD is out of kayfabe(charcter).

I might be able to link you to the first disc is anyone is intrested(I found a youtube channel with a bunch of WWE Documentries).

Wierdly enough, I just so happened to watch that on the in-flight entertainment and (here I'll admit I've never read the books) I actually really enjoyed it; very fun sci-fi/fantasy piece, and no mistake.

Having finally watched Pacific Rim, I've decided there are four things I want to see if there's another Pacific Rim movie made.

1. More Cherno Alpha
2. A British Jaeger, preferably one that kills a Kaiju by impaling it on Big Ben (because landmark-based Kaiju murder, hells yeah!)
3. A Jaeger using a train as a nunchuck
4. More Cherno Alpha

I'm giving you those ideas free, Hollywood!

Watched Sneakers again for the first time in ages. Even after all these years, it is still a good movie. Really before its time when it came to showing computers - they had actual Dos screens, and one of what looked like Windows 3.0 (or maybe it was 3.1). These days that's not too remarkable, but for 1992, that was really something.

I'm a sucker for contraversial movies but this one here was a big one.

The movie is called Kids, and it released in 1995. It shows us the truth of teenage sexuality in our midst and our American culture, but the way the movie actually had child actors in it and very, very crazy scenes.

After watching the original Godfather, they went into Godfather #2 - it began with Vito's early childhood and coming to America from Sicily - that was pretty good, watching his rise to power. They showed Michael, Santino, and Fredo growing up as little boys, etc. That part was good.

Then (and I'm not sure if this was a different sequel or the same one) = they suddenly started flickering back and forth between the past and present, showing out-takes of the original Godfather, and ...

(still not sure if this was the next movie in line or the same one) = suddenly Michael became a total butthole. Everyone was turning on everyone - it lost its appeal.

In one of them Michael kills Fredo, probably the butthole one.

I think if they took the early Vito stuff, then the brothers growing up, then went into the original Godfather (and cut out everything else completely) it would have been much better.

Anyway, I got bored and watched it from the next room while playing on the PC (meaning didn't see anything unless I heard a line that attracted my attention).

Were they worth it = not hardly the same impact as the original Godfather. Not at all. It was Hollywood trying to jump on the theme while it was hot to the public; if that tells you anything. One of the reasons I'm not big on sequels after a great movie. They get excited, then over-excited, then desperate to milk the living crap out of the theme.

I have been watching Vietnam: A Television History. Its a very good documentary about - you guessed it - the war in Vietnam. It starts up at the end of World War 2 to lay the groundwork, which is important because by doing so it reveals the goals of the Viet Minh/Cong/North Vietnamese, which were not simply communism, but nationalism. It makes an effort to portray both sides of the conflict without showing favoritism, and lets the viewer make up their own mind. Though one thing it does make eminently clear is the impossibility of a U.S. victory in a war of attrition against an enemy that would literally suffer any losses to win (3-4 million dead Vietnamese, Laotians, and Cambodians vs 58,000 American dead). Yet at the same time there seemed no way out.

One of the things I found interesting was President Johnson's own doubts about the war from early on. But as one of the talking heads pointed out, the last domino in the domino theory was the White House. In 1964 a president who looked soft on communism was not going to win election. So one of the first things Johnson did was reverse Kennedy's plan to reduce the number of American advisors in Vietnam and instead start massively building up. As he said himself: "But if I left that war and let the Communists take over South Vietnam, then I would be seen as a coward and my nation would be seen as an appeaser and we would both find it impossible to accomplish anything for anybody anywhere on the entire globe."

It makes a good companion to Fog of War and the Trials of Henry Kissinger. Neither of those are as unbiased, but one can read between the lines of each. Fog of War gives a much more indepth view of what the White House strategy was in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, and Trials of Henry Kissinger of it during the Nixon years.

Interesting thing I noticed watching it this time around. Some of the score sounded exactly like pieces from Star Wars: A New Hope. Not just inspired by, but practically note for note. Some of the sound effects were taken from Star Wars, like the blaster fire sound. You might say George Lucas' fingerprints were all over it.

I just finished season three - the final season - of the Borgias. Fantastic. François Arnaud is excellent anti-hero as Cesare. The guy is practically evil personified, but the great thing about him is that everything he does is to protect his family, and is what he feels is right. He does it so well that you cheer for him as he murders his brother. In retrospect, the entire series can be seen as his evolution into a Dark Lord worthy of Sauron or Vader.
