So, I did a thing and played this for a few hours today on Xbox. It might be a while until I get back to Oblivion. It's been many moons since I played a turn-based RPG, but damn it if this isn't a great game.
Beautiful environments, fascinating story, and great characters. The soundtrack is also phenomenal and sets a great tone for the gameplay.

Oh good. I read somewhere that it was a jrpg style game, which usually means very anime-ish in presentation.

Yep! I only have two party members right now: Gustave and Lune. And I should have listened to Lune before I stopped playing last night. She mentioned how the Nevron we were approaching looked more dangerous than the rest, and I then proceeded to get my ass kicked by it.
I read that you can’t make your own characters. You play as a party of preset characters. That’s a bit of a bummer for me.

Yep, they are pre-defined characters.

So, from what I've gathered thus far the anagonist (The Paintress) somehow sundered the world. That's the remnants of 1800's Paris that is shown in the opening sequence.
The detail on the characters are indeed phenomenal. Way ahead of even current day Bethesda games.

So, I'll spoiler the answer because it's central to the plot.
I like that forest pic. Ethereal.
The world design in this game is stunning. I entered a new zone last night and it was like being underwater on a coral reef.
Can’t lie, this is one of the most beautiful and unique games I have ever played. Definitely worth a shot.
