Words to the wise, Rohirrim...

Always keep a 4.0 GPA
Do a lot of extra-curriculars (1-2 a semester is wise).
Do a lot of community service (I'd advising raking up at least 250 hours a year, but if you can push higher, go for it).

Trust me on this one, it'll make your life far easier down the road when you can go to any school entirely on scholarship.

Rohirrim
I actually do a lot of volunteer work around town.

More words of the wise:

Don't be surprised when a four-year university degree in an unmarketable skill wouldn't impress an Assistant Manager that barely speaks english at McDonald's either.

As my father put it:

"Be an artist, absolutely. Pursue your dreams, life is rather pointless besides. Just don't be a starving artist. All these romantic stories about artists starving for their art in the slums of Paris, fail to mention these guys had some pretty severe mental problems as well."

"Get a day job, strum your guitar at night. Eat well, because you'll need the energy to perform and walk around when all your money went into the rent you paid to have a roof over your head and you can't take the bus. You might fail to achieve your dream, but you will never regret trying too."

More words of the wise:

Don't be surprised when a four-year university degree in an unmarketable skill wouldn't impress an Assistant Manager that barely speaks english at McDonald's either.

As my father put it:

I need to clip this and send it to my son. I've been begging him to get a degree in something marketable, and take the music classes as extra curriculars rather than making it his major. I don't want to squelch his dreams, but want him to have an income that will support the dreams in case they never pan out.

From God, to my Dad, to me, to you, to your son. Do with it as you please.

@LizzieKins

Dude, Mackelmore is cool and all that. But he's an artist with a Record Deal...he's kinda already successful at getting screwed. Artists don't make crap for their work. I feel bad on the one hand,...but that quote lacks severely in life experience.

And I'm not saying that you, or me, or anyone should ever betray their dreams.

But, there is a way in which they can and will be achieved. Neglecting basic, everyday needs, is not that path. Sure some people take a gamble here and there, and they have wonderful success stories, but for every one of those, there are 99,999 attempts that fail.

Usually miserably.

In example:

"Kid! You make that guitar sing! I'm going to make you a rockstar! I'll send a car to pick you up tonight! What's your address?"

"The dumpster in the alley between 45th and Wabash. Where the restaurant doesn't lock their trash so I have something to eat every night."

"...."

The real success stories are the ones where people didn't give up.

They wrote a great book and twenty publishers reject them. The twenty first took a chance and BAM! Harry Potter.

I thought Macklemore was an indie artist. He had a chance to sign with Jimmy Iovine but declined. That's where that quote came from.

I'm already in debt $6,000 for trying to chase my dreams. Which was to get a degree. Well, I failed. It's not as easy as 1 2 3. Cost has gone up in everything. Were I to try again, I couldnt get a scholarship because of how in debt I am. Because I flunked out for poor attendance. (Turns out having a newborn and going to school was a stupid idea. Three days with no sleep on a regular basis makes for poor studying atmosphere.)

Will I try again later? Sure, if it suits me. I want a degree in English, so I can have more credibility as an author. Hell, I want a degree in SOMETHING because most places don't even care what degree you have, as long as you've got one.

So, for now, at 23 with a husband and child, I'm stuck. I literally have no way forward until I can find some sort of help paying off my debt. And unless I want to miss my son's whole childhood, I can't get a second job.

I'm trying to not give up so soon, but it's hard.

Won't know till you try. Even then....try again.

Adaptation can only occur when exposed. The blade can only be sharpened with friction.

I want you to try, and fail. I want you to fail, and cry. I want you to cry, and question your own abilities. I want you to question yourself, and then refuse to listen to those lies that fear tells us. I want you to give it that extra hour in the middle of the night when inspiration strikes at the worst times.

I want you to experience and know all these things, because until you do you will live in this stasis of regret and fear.

And because that one morning, when the sun is barely rising and you have three minutes to yourself until you leave for work and the world is still in a grey twilight and you take that first sip of coffee that parches the dry thirst in your mouth and you see that one e-mail that says 'yes' and know that it will change everything for the better, that smile will be the most genuine and life-affirming you ever make.

Yeah, got to agree with Blackie here. If you want something badly enough it requires a tremendous commitment; especially with getting a degree when you have young children. You have to find a way to prioritize your time so they have a mother and you can still pull it together for school requirements.

I had a newborn baby and was training dogs for income when I went to college - my child and my grades were my top priorities. My marriage and the dogs training got pushed back, and friends got pushed way back.

You do what you have to if you want something badly enough.

Elisabeth Hollow
I hate it when people say "If you want something bad enough, you'll do it" because I feel like they're telling me I don't want it enough. Mostly because it's accompanied by "You need to go back to school and stop being lazy."

I'm not going to do something until I'm comfortable with it, because if I'm too stressed out about something, I get sick. And that's something people don't understand. I make myself ill worrying about everything. I won't eat, sleep, and will vomit up anything I do eat if I'm too stressed. Piling on school is just...ugh. I didn't have a job the first time around, and I can't imagine doing it now. It was wake up every two hours to feed Snuggles, study as much as I could, do my work, and sleep maybe a half hour. I cannot do that again. No, I won't have a newborn, but it's just frustrating when people tell me "If you want it bad enough, you'll do it."

Yes, I want it. Very badly! But now is NOT the right time to pursue it! They act like I'm not working towards my goal-I am! Just slowly, and at my own pace. I wish people would understand that. Just because I'm not in college NOW doesn't mean I never plan to go.

It isn't just that they don't want to be led by women, it is that in the majority of religions (including christianity) female members aren't supposed to lead according to their religious texts.

Fortunately we've come a long way in terms of equality but it is still unfortunate that the majority of those who belong to religious groups either have little to no understanding of their own religion or simply refuse to acknowledge that they actually only adhere very loosely to the terms of their own religion.

Wait, I was responding to what Blackie said here. There was no finger pointed at anyone in what I said. I am the last person in the world to push anyone (except perhaps Acadian once) - I was just telling how I felt about it. Please don't take it personally, because it wasn't meant that way at all. I only read Blackie's comment and responded.

I like that we have a forum we can bounce our opinions off each other. No two people will always agree on everything/do things the same way. What worked for me may not work for another; and it was not my intention when stating my opinion that anyone take it as directed at them.

Sorry you took it as personal, but it wasn't. Of all people on here, you must know I'm in your corner 100%, I know what you are going through. Hug_emoticon.gif

I didn't take it personal, mAXLie. I was just saying, lol. It goes back to when I was 9 months pregnant and my dad had just had a stroke and was in downtown Houston. I had mentioned on a website for mothers that I had no way to get to him (No money, no car, and the nearest bus stop was ten miles away, and no one was willing to drive me that far) and some woman told me "I guess you don't really want to go see him, then. If you really wanted to, you'd make it happen."

It just makes me angry that some people, not you, lol, judge my situation and think that they know what's best for me and what I SHOULD do. They don't handle my bills, or finances, or are around me on the daily. I can understand friendly advice, but seriously, when it gets to the point where someone is telling me I don't want to go see my dying father because I'm nine months pregnant with high blood pressure and not willing to walk sixty miles...that's what that phrase makes me think of.

To this day, I don't know what she wanted me to to do get there, lol

Don't ever let anyone else's opinions make you feel worse about your situation, put pressure on you. No one is in your shoes but you.
