Er - how do you have birds with your cat? How is this possible? Because I have a pretty heart-shaped urn on my mantle where my beloved English Budgie found out the hard way that cats and birds should not be housed together; that the squirt bottle and having their own separate rooms in the house does not stop a determined cat.

( sad.gif Poor Peep! )

Oh no. We would never chance that. These are the resident outdoor birds- free entertainment for the kitties- from the safety of the living room window.

And a couple of mALX... um... squirrels, who seem to eat most of the seed. Just put a couple of peanut butter apples out.

Lovely fire, mirocu. Makes me long to build one my own self. But not enough to knock all the ice off the twigs, dig through the wood pile, clean off the hearth... etc. etc.

I shall simply go to Netflix and search for "Yule Log Fireplace," with actual crackling and background music.

Yeah, the cat had run of the house EXCEPT the bird room. Every time I saw him lingering around that door, I'd spray him with the squirt gun and tell him "NO!"

The birds were let out of their cages to fly every day, and had little gym sets they could play on that sat in the window (all the outside cats loved to watch the birdie in the window show every day). As soon as it got dark the birds would fly back to their cages and sleep. I had a breeding pair; sold off the babies after training them to be handled and not use the bathroom anywhere but their papers.

I kept a thick towel wedged under their room door so the birds couldn't escape into the cat area; but the only indoor cat we have would wait till we were asleep and pull the towel out of the gap.

Every morning I found the towel pulled out, no amount of squirting water or telling the cat "NO" changed his behavior. I got bigger towels, used more than one, etc. I even closed the cat up in my son's room while I was sleeping or going to work; but my husband let him loose while I was at work.

My poor beautiful bird, I raced him to the vet, but they couldn't save him. I really miss him. sad.gif.

After that I called the vet that bought all my baby birds and sold my whole operation to her. If I couldn't protect them, didn't want to go through that again.

Hope everyone's had a good Pancake Day/Shrove Tuesday.

Today I discovered that people down here in Yorkshire sometimes put gravy on their pancakes. I'm not sure how I feel about that huh.gif

Yep, it was definitely pancakes. This place is very strange.

Yorkshire Puddings are slightly different and super popular all over the UK, mainly as part of the traditional Sunday roast/Sunday lunch/Sunday dinner.

Gravy?... huh.gif ...Oy...

Aye, McWife loves her Yorkshires with her Xmas dinner...Not a fan meself...

It's basically - I'm reliably informed - the same batter as is used for pancakes...But pancakes (possibly called crepes in the U.S.) are shallow fried in a frying pan, and Yorkshires are cooked in a special tin in t'oven...

But are essentially mixed the same...You could use the same batch to do pancakes and Yorkshires at the same time...

EDIT!!!...Before someone says it, the Yorkshire Puddings bought at the supermarket tend to be - at least in part - pre-cooked...Hence why you can just shove them on a baking tray to heat up as the shape is already there...

So I'm told... rolleyes.gif ... laugh.gif ...

A lot of times when you are having this hard a struggle to write, what you do get out feels tortured to the reader; you don't want that. Wait till you have an inspiration that you can't deny and can't stop writing it out - that kind of writing grabs readers and they can't stop reading - that is what you want.

I've not written anything but notes for nearly two weeks, worldbuilding and so on. A whole mess of stuff rattling around inside my head, but there's a few holes that I need to patch up. The ideas and inspiration are in there somewhere, I just need to find a starting point. Once I get that first sentence, the rest will write themselves.

But that first step's a real doozy... wacko.gif

Write something that you KNOW has to be in there. It may not be the beginning, but it is A beginning. Then figure out how you (and the readers, and the characters) got there.

Words on paper (or screen) are the key when you are stuck. You have notes- write the "connective tissue" that pulls those notes together.

Whatever you do, please do not put yourself into the corner of "this has to be the best opening ever." What do you want the reader to know- what do you want them to wonder about- what has already happened- what is about to happen?

I know that one too!!...

I had this awesome idea for a Sci-Fi thing, a while back...Massive opening bit, which I might have actually managed to finish...for once...Plotted it out, loads of characters...As is my wont... laugh.gif ...Fantastic it was...Well, at least in my head it was... biggrin.gif ...Anyways...Awesome start, plotted to the end of said opening...Massive thing happens™ and then...I realised I didn't actually have a plot to follow it...

So yeah...Make sure there's a point to it before you start properly... laugh.gif ...

Oh, and I started something...Then added another bit that was started earlier...Then another bit...And then got completely lost...

Then you storyboard. Write out the scenes that you can feel; don't bother with the beginning right now. Once you have the inspired scenes written out, then piece them together/move them around so they fit chronologically the way you want them to; then write the connecting scenes to tie them together.

That will give you a better idea of the story you want to tell; and get your flow going. As you do those scenes, they will inspire other thoughts and ideas about how you want to start the story.

The beginning of the story is only the beginning for the reader, it does not have to be written first.

Just to clarify, I have started it, 7,000 or so words, the prologue and two scenes from the first chapter(2 of 4, but not the first two), so I've plenty of stuff left to write. The problem I'm having is that I can't find a start for any scenes because I keep getting hung up on the gaps in my notes; missing names and the like(I've got something of an obsessive streak), hence the whole head going to explode issue.

Plenty that I can write, but I keep tripping over myself. mad.gif
