****Explanation of Terms:****

Some features in my story are unique to either a mod I am using or my imagination, any I could think of are listed below. If I have missed one and anyone had questions on it, please feel free to ask and I’ll add it.

*********** Khajiit Terms:***********

- "Blue Show," or “Blue Flag” - denotes female Khajiit has reached sexual maturity, but is still a virgin. The Show turns purple after virginity is lost. Female Khajiit get the blue show at age 20, and it brings a powerful drive to mate.

- "Started" (started into mating cycle) - Female Khajiit normally have to be started by a male Khajiit's “barbs” - Because Maxical is mixed, she was able to be "started" without mating. A female Khajiit becomes "bound for life" or “sealed” to whomever "starts" her.

- "Bound" (bound for life or sealed) - When Azura bound leopard to human, she wanted to ensure they could never bring the promiscuity of their leopard ancestry (their beast nature) to their new human forms.

When a female Khajiit breeds for the first time, she is brought to the original forest where Khajiit were created, and Azura places a seal onto their tongues that binds them to that mate forever.

When their mate is near, the "seal" on the female's tongue oozes moon sugar, a highly addictive treat to Khajiit. So technically, they become addicted to the presence of their mate.

When their mate gets a distance from them, the "seal" becomes painful - the further away they get, the more painful it becomes. If the mate dies, the pain becomes unbearable, and the female Khajiit usually (follow their mates to the grave).

A female Khajiit must obey her bound mate. She will defend him with her life. She can never turn against him or expose his secrets/deceptions.

If a female Khajiit becomes bound to a vampire that changes forms or uses illusion magic to change his appearance and impersonate someone - she will know her mate no matter the form, but will never expose him. This is one of the reasons the vampires are drawn to the Khajiit.

- The nearby presence of ancient vampires (or the drinking of their "juices") interferes with Azura's seal. The pain of the seal goes away temporarily on drinking the juices, or as long as the ancient vampire is nearby.

***********Dunmer Terms: ***********

** "Dunmer Mysteries" - Azura's gift to the Chimer (now Dunmer) - To keep divorce and promiscuity from the Chimer, Azura gave the gift of "marital mysteries" that a husband can only teach his first wife or face severe consequences. (They keep the Dunmer Male faithful to his wife. Since Dunmer live so long, and the man can never teach them again, divorce is very rare in Dunmer - and the widows of Dunmer men are highly sought).

(They enhance the sexual experience)

***********Ancient Vampire Terms:***********

Vampires in my story are effected by the mods I use and my own imagination. Here are a few key things that effect all ancient vampires in my story (but not feral vampires):

Some vampires keep “cattle” in hidden cells in their lairs to feed off of, but the blood of cattle is not considered palatable. It is a last resort, and only used to hide their vampire nature in public.

Some prostitutes will allow an ancient to feed off them (for a fee) with permission in advance. Ancients are willing to pay well for this service rather than drink the stagnant blood of cattle.

The bloodlust (in ancient vampires only, not the feral ones) comes from the scent or taste of virgin blood. It drives them to madness, forces their nature out beyond their control. They can't fight the urge to seek it, and once they start drinking it they can't stop till the victim is drained completely - every last drop. To counter this, (an ancient who doesn't want to kill) mates with the victim before drinking. It takes a little while for the hormones to change the taste of the blood, giving the vampire some taste of virgin blood without killing the victim.

Some vampires began “farming” young girls to get the virgin blood without competing for it - kidnapping them and keeping them locked up till they reached legal age and then drinking their blood.

All vampires in my story are territorial over their feeding grounds. Any vampires that enter their territory must come to whoever’s territory it is and state their business there. They can negotiate for a share of the blood, but must have something to offer the one whose territory it is in return for a share.

If the visiting vampire doesn’t get permission first and is caught “Poaching” by feeding on anyone, he will be hunted down and killed by the ones whose territory it is.

Usually they do not share their territory with another, but there are exceptions. (example: Seridur and Jakben Imbel/Malan have a deal with each other to share blood equally. (both farm girls as well).

** I use “he” and “she” here just for convenience sake, as you’ll note in my story there are male vampires whose mates were male, and female vampires whose mates were female. The vampire nature knows what the vampire is seeking, and that is what it provides.

“Chosen Mate”

- Because ancients live so long, instead of them choosing their own mate, their vampire nature selects for them a mate that would be their perfect match over hundreds of years. Souls are eternal, and it is the soul that is selected and marked for them to hunt later. There may be more than one soul marked as perfect for him, but he will only be given the hunt for the one that best suits him at the time he petitions his nature.

- When he is ready the ancient lets his nature know he is ready for a chosen. The nature then gives him the hunt instinct to find his mate. He has to hunt for her by using his instincts and vampire powers.

- There is no comparison to the feel of that hunt for the chosen. It is originally driven by the same feel as a bloodlust, but to an extreme degree. The most powerful urges of his vampire nature emerge and take over, using all its resources and ultimate powers he never knew he had will come out for this hunt. They become like gods of the night staking claim on the chosen, and bringing her to their lair. If his chosen is a virgin, the bloodlust leaves him once he’s found her.

- The vampire will kill anyone that stands in the way between himself and getting his chosen, including husbands, boyfriends, fathers, Legion, etc. Vampires instinctively know their competition.

- Once in his lair, he settles down for 3-4 years. With such extended lives, they don’t feel the passing of time as a mortal would. Vampires can wait interminably long for what they want, unless the bloodlust is driving them. Since the chosen removes the bloodlust, they may live with them a long time before actually mating, establishing bonds of love.

- After 3-4 years, the vampire nature will drive him to “make” the chosen (share his Dark Gift/ancient line with her, make her a vampire) so she will live as long as he does. Ancients love forever, and a lost chosen would mean grieving forever. They want her to be there as long as possible, and that means she must be turned into a vampire.

- The Chosen's souls that would suit him are selected by his nature for him at the time of his making. The nature works on her after the mating to be perfect for him - as if the gods created her for him in particular.

- Once they meet, the chosen lets the ancient know she is ready to move to the next step in their relationship totally subconsciously by giving signs that are called the “Steps of Promise.” Once the vampire receives a certain level of promises he will be driven to get her into his lair (if they aren’t already there) with the same intensity as the hunt for her.

- Once she is his, he will treat her well, be loving and romantic - but will guard the union against anyone who may try to come between them or break them apart, meaning he will kill anyone who tries to do either.

- Part of protecting that relationship would be to ensure she live as long as him, which is why the vampire will be driven to “make” his Chosen sometime within the first five years of their relationship).

“Poaching”

** If a vampire does not act in a timely manner on his chosen, doesn’t protect her, or rejects her - she can be "Poached" by another vampire if they want her as their chosen.

- Within the same line, only uplines can poach. (example: Malan made Hassildor, so Malan is the only one that can poach Hassildor’s chosen)

- Ancients from other lines can kidnap or "Poach" chosen from enemies for revenge, or if the girl is just desirable to them.

- An ancient can also swear his chosen to another ancient vampire

- She must come to his lair of her own free will, walk under her own power into it (not be carried over the threshold), they must enter the lair together, and he must have the full vampire out as they enter his lair.

“Steps of Promise”

- Technically, these are things mortals do without their own knowledge that ancient vampires feel is a promise that has been made to them that you want them. Ancients consider promises made to them by mortals are a binding contract and no matter what happens that promise must be kept.

These are things done totally subconsciously by the mortal, but in the vampire's mind they are confirmations that you are interested in them (hence, you are promising yourself to the vampire). The more promises made, or the bigger the promise made - the firmer the ancient's actions will be to ensure that promise is kept. He will kill to protect that relationship she has inadvertently promised - even without her knowing she was sending signals.

- The ancient considers these Steps of Promise as a solemn vow - a binding contract.

- These steps can be anything that vampire "thinks" is a promise, things people do on a daily basis and think nothing of. (Talking to them, asking them for help, looking to him for protection or solace, etc).

- The ancient reads her mind and listens in for any thoughts he can consider a promise, too - because they feel the thoughts reveal the subconscious desires. (Like if you aren't thinking of killing them, anything good you think is considered a come-on)

- Any physical contact is a huge sign. (hand holding, kissing, etc.) He'll be driven to drag her off to his lair after physical contact.

- Considered huge promises would be sleeping with them, saving their lives, being nude in front of them, choosing him over another, etc.

- In other words, if the ancient percieves it as a come-on in their mind, you have made a vow to them that they consider a binding contract.

- Sexually, giving herself to him freely and in her own timing - no advances made on his part. This is the consummation of the “Steps of Promise.” He will consider himself sealed to her permanently at this point if he wants to be.

Once he percieves all these inadvertant signals from her if she is his chosen or he is "Poaching" her and making her his chosen - there is strict protocol that must be followed to distinguish her from just someone he is mating in his lair - so his nature knows to turn their hearts to each other.

***********Uriel’s Law:***********

** Uriel's Law - This is the law that has the ancient vampires mad. The law reads that vampires in Cyrodiil are fair game - kill on sight. Uriel enacted it hoping to run vampires out of Cyrodiil. Instead, fear of the law drove them into hiding and eventually being forced into hiding festered into anger.

The use of vampire juices is also banned in Cyrodiil by Uriel’s Law, but can be purchased in the other provinces. It is contraband if found on a person in Cyrodiil, or being brought across the border into Cyrodiil.

Clavicus Vile gave the gift to vampires that if they feed they can hide their features for 24 hours. Uriel’s law countered that, anyone caught feeding on another person is committing a crime and is put to death.

**********Misc************

** Swearing a Vow - a tradition that is highly honored, a vow sworn is a promise kept. The fist is pounded twice over the heart, the right hand raised to clasp the others. It is sealed by either a kiss on the lips or a salute on both cheeks while the hands are raised and clasped.

** “Country” swearing of vows - an old rural tradition of declaring love before two witnesses - is considered binding and a legal marriage only if there are at least two witnesses.

Thanks for this. For those any who have not been devout Maxifans for years, I'm sure the glossary is very helpful!
Elisabeth Hollow
This is a great refresher on the terms. Thanks, mALX!
