Hello, I have Daggerfall on a CD and Arena on my new computer. Which computers can I play this games on?

You can play both on a DOS-based system (Windows 95 or 98). You can also play them on an XP system by using a program called DOS Box. Personally, I would recommend setting up a Win 98 partiton- DOS Box is a little.... odd. DOS Box can be found here:

Daggerfall didn't work on my old XP. i don't know if it's because of the fact that it's a home made computer..
I haven't even tried Daggerfall on my vista. Don't think it's gonna work anyway.

I strongly recommend this link for getting Daggerfall to work on XP Pro

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Running_under_Windows

I just played a bit of the starter dungeon. If you aren't getting sound at first, change the IRQ settings and test. My settings were Soundblaster Pro then 220, 1, and 7

For MIDI, I chose MPU-401.

I am not certain if Arena is worth the effort to get it running- of course, I never played the original (unlike Daggerfall).

I've played Arena on my XP PC, using DOS box. It's not too much of a pain in the spotted owl. The game itself is hard as hell, if only because it is so different in play from the more recent TES titles--different keys, totally counterintuitive.

This thread got me thinking about DF again. The VDMSound setup has known problems- hard to strafe or move backwards; almost impossible to swim or jump; and, of course, the infamous "invisible quest object/person" bug. So without going into too much gory detail, here is what works:

Create a DOS 6.22 boot floppy.
Create a DOS partition of no more than 2GB on a second HDD.
Install DF on the DOS partition.
Boot to XP.
Create a DF shortcut on desktop.
Edit Dagger.exe to accomodate fact that DOS freaks if it sees more than 768 MB of RAM and to basically emulate the old config.sys and autoexec.bat memory settings.
Use Mo'Slo to have processor run DF at .26% (yes, that is approx. 1 fourth of 1 percent) of actual processor speed.

Game runs as well as it ever did. (ie- frequent CTDs), but "save early- save often." No swimming, strafing, backing problems; no invisible quest NPCs; no spinning rats.

It's good to be a geek sometimes.

Oh my god that was complicated. Thanks for all the help anyway.

heyy, treydog - cool thinkings there.

maybe go out and buy an old computer, save often, and be prepared to enjoy the sloooowww and peaceful plunge into the void! wink.gif
