A common cold was enough to kill someone back then so many would've died anyway...

But I guess they would have some food spare, however it wouldn't last long those days with the lack of fridges and preservatives.

I guess you would've had to just keep on going despite illness. That's probably one of the reasons why so many died from illnesses that today even without medicine we could survive easily (although it's never pleasant).
