QUOTE(SubRosa @ Jun 20 2014, 01:04 AM) QUOTE(King Coin @ Jun 19 2014, 08:18 PM) So, 'bout that Steam sale that's going on right now...
Ok, you made me look. Skyrim Legendary edition is only $24, that is a really good buy. I'd rather cut off one of my own ears in a Van Gogh inspired fit of random psychopathic rage than have a game tied to Steam.

Cool. Record it if you do it. I on the other hand will benefit from these sales. Company of Heros is MINE!

I wasn't thrilled about Steam at first either, just on moral and ethical grounds if nothing else. But I have noticed that whatever game you buy these days requires you to be online and log into their company's servers for authentication. If not Steam, then it's EA with a Bioware game or Kingdoms of Amalur, etc... Or how Diablo 3 requires you to be logged in even though it is expressly a single player game.
Gog.com is the only place I know of where get a DRM free game these days. And except for a few games like Witcher 3, it is all really old games whose source codes have already been released to the public. I love Gog, but I have never bought a game from them that was less than a decade old.
Speaking of which, Gog has been having the old D&D games on sale lately. The Neverwinter Nights games, the Baldur's Gates, Icewind Dales, etc... I remember paying something like $20 for Neverwinter Nights Diamond Edition a few years ago, and now they have it for like $2. I have been seriously considering getting the Icewind Dale games from them.
OTOH, Steam has these nice sales, and buying online is how the industry has gone. There are hardly any games on disc in a store anymore. You either have to mail order a dvd, or download it from Steam or some other online storefront.

My excuse for caving in on Skyrim was that I bought the Anthology to get Morrowind, and played Skyrim instead.
Like many others, I don't like being on-line for a single-player game, and so I use off-line mode all the time, but of course Steam connects for updates every time it's started. I'm always worried that they have the power to rescind my use of the game on a whim, and even though I have the disks, I wouldn't be able to continue using it. Or they'd download an update that breaks the game.
Or the Steam agent would contain spyware. In a sense, it does, because it's reporting usage back to them, but it's innocuous - so far - I think.
