Well, he does have his Warming Up spell biggrin.gif

A couple days after the New Year´s Eve, Lothran´s shift was over and up until now he has cleared Plundered Mine again and doing some business around Bruma. Next up; either a trip past mr. Mora´s shrine or a visit to his playmates in Capstone Cave... laugh.gif

Yep laugh.gif

Early in the morning Lothran raided Capstone Cave with his trusty Spriggan friend. Though when he got to the last bandit in the cave, which btw was the one in the room to the right when you´ve entered the cave, something strange happened. Lothran ran up and summoned his friend, but she didn´t attack the bandit, nor did the bandit attack her. Instead, when Lothran approached the bandit, the bandit demanded 100 gold like she was a Highwayman blink.gif

I read that initially as his summoned spriggan demanded 100 gold from him and was really scratching my head. Then I sorted out what you meant (the bandit acting like a highway(wo)man). Still odd enough though! laugh.gif

That's pretty weird mirocu. Are your bandits vanilla? I sometimes see bandits demand money, but this happens because of MMM.

Lothran can summon spriggan?

Yep again. SubRosa made a mod where you can summon bears, wolves, boars and spriggans, but for some reason she left out deer... biggrin.gif

I did some reading about it and apparently it's not a bug, bandits can ask for gold too. ohmy.gif Was this one a Khajiit by chance? I'll copy some parts from the UESP:

The Highwaymen, who are technically bandits, but behave a little differently by demanding gold rather than becoming hostile on sight. This behavior also carries over (in a limited fashion) to the more common Khajiit bandits. If you were to raise a Khajiit bandit's disposition, he accosts you with the highwayman's demand of gold instead of the mundane conversations you'd otherwise get from bandits of other races. Unlike a highwayman, surrendering the 100 gold to the bandit will not satisfy him for long. As soon as his disposition returns to its original level, he will attack despite having accepted your gold.

So maybe it happened because the bandit's disposition towards Lothran was high.

It was a Khajiit but a female, and I didn´t think it carried over to them too. But that explains it, I guess.

Just for kicks, Lothran gave her the gold and then proceeded to raise her disposition, so now she´s his best friend! laugh.gif

I just found another:

Despite the fact that there are no actual female highwaymen in the game, female Khajiit do have the voice file needed to conduct business as highwaymen under these circumstances.

Well that explains it. Now it'd be interesting to see whether this bandit would join Lothran fighting other bandits.

Yay, Lothie got a new kitty pal! Wow, that is really interesting. Nice detective work, Lopov. goodjob.gif

Never had that happen. Buffy tried to never let bandits get close enough to talk to her. For highwaymen, she'd give them 100 gold, then nail them dead center in the back with an arrow as they walked away. Then she'd recover both her arrow and 100 gold from them. No muss, no fuss. IPB Image

Well said, and exactly right. Buffy’s highwayman policy is born of experience and she actually considers it both responsible and humane. Responsible in that the highwayman will never accost another traveler. Humane in that the death she delivers is instant.

'Oblivion hath no fury like an elf whose precious mare has been attacked.'

As I said, Buffy's policy regarding highwaymen was born of experience from her first encounter with one. She was astride Superian and declined the demand for gold. As Superian wheeled to flee, the cat’s axe barely missed the mare’s rump! Once elf and horse had sped away to safety, Buffy dismounted to ensure the mare had not been harmed. She grew more and more furious as she imagined the injury Superian could have sustained had the mare been slower or the Khajiit faster. Her fury grew into action.

Leaving Superian safely hidden in some bushes, Buffy crept back to within visual range of the highwayman. Selecting a low quality arrow and applying a high quality poison, she stealthily loosed her arrow. It was an intentional gut-shot, inflicted to cause pain and allow the poison to slowly kill. As the highwayman rolled around on the ground in agony while the poison was slowly killing him, Buffy could have instantly sped up his demise with a second arrow. Instead, she shouldered her bow and simply whispered, “I hope it hurts.” ohmy.gif

So. . . compared to her first encounter, I can see why she’d consider her current policy regarding highwaymen 'responsible and humane'. As SubRosa has accurately said, Buffy is cuddly - like a rattlesnake.

As to bandits behaving like highwaymen, if my avatar ever encountered such he likely mistook one for the other without giving it a second thought. As to highwaymen themselves, my avatar's reputation is such that a good many of them praise him rather than offer a choice between banditry and battle. His response to such behavior varies. He deems himself a man of peace. It's true that highwaymen who approach him with no outward ill intent are often let off with an firm admonishment to forswear their evil ways and become law abiding, tax paying contributors to society.

His ward, young and idealistic as she tends to be, is not always so forgiving. One such encounter between Vilja and a highwayman remains one of the highlights of the play-through. It occurred some earth years ago, at a time when my avatar's life was more adventurous and less the stead stream of endless patrols, delivery runs and tax gatherings it later became. The encounter is documented in detail on Beth's official forums. Those forums search engine being what it now is, I can no longer find it there. Thankfully, a web search unearthed it, attributed to a fictitious author, in one of those faux forums that crop up from time to time. It was written in the form of journal entry, one of few narratives told from the horse's mouth, so to speak. It also hails from a time when my brain was less a shambles than it now is and thus provides, in my opinion, a more interesting telling than one is apt to get from me nowadays. Here it is:

QUOTE
We had begun investigating cryptic leads found in a recently acquired journal. One such deciphered missive, seemingly more straightforward than the rest, mentioned an object purportedly located somewhere near the northeast curve of Red Ring Road. As luck would have it, our only official commitment was a tax-warrant run to Roxey Inn. That could be accomplished en route.

So it was. We left the Imperial City on foot with neither Wolfgang nor Groucho in tow, a rarity for us, and marched straight to the Roxey. Tax collected, we headed east on the Red. Upon reaching the bend in question, very near where I planned to start our search, a Highwayman accosted us. Rather than spouting the usual "Your money or your life" doggerel, he grinned broadly and greeted me warmly as Champion, offering assistance. "Well now," thought I, "there's hope for this fellow yet. Maybe he's not wholly committed to a life of crime and will see the error of his ways." I was not on duty and thus not required to bring criminals to justice. I resolved to give him the benefit of the doubt and leave him be.

That was the plan anyway. Vilja saw things differently. Blame it on youth. Blame it on rash impulsiveness. Blame it on whatever. It matters not. What does matter is that no sooner had I bid the khajiit good day than Vilja drew her blade and assaulted him. My first inclination was to join the battle, making fast work of an obviously over-matched adversary. Out came my sword. I closed on the prey. But it just didn't feel right. The man had done me no harm. Vilja had started this. Let her finished it if she could. I sheathed my weapon and resolved to remain a bystander.

Only, this khajiit was not so over-matched as I supposed. Not three double-headed ax strokes later Vilja's blade went sailing through the air to land with a clang on the road some distance away. The cat proceeded to pound the living daylights out of her. She took quite a trouncing, at one point herself being thrown into a nearby boulder. Unable to reclaim her sword (and I was not about to retrieve it) she instead relied on spells to survive, an advantage her foe did not possess.

The tide slowly turned. Little by little Vilja whittled the khajiit down, his health fading while hers, thanks to magical intervention, remained steady if low. The outcome became a forgone conclusion.

Enough was enough. I could not permit so worthy an adversary, who had proven himself the better warrior, to perish. I stepped forward, grabbed Vilja by the shoulders, and gave her a sharp dressing-down. She calmed almost immediately, as did the khajiit. We then parted ways, us leaving the road in search of that mysterious object, he returning to his place of concealment at roadside, an amused and bemused look on his face, there to lick his wounds and hopefully contemplate a return to the straight and narrow.

Our lead, by the way, proved false. If the object was indeed nearby we never found it.

Seems like Buffy is not as forgiving as Lothran. Then again, he´s never had his horse threatened by a Highwayman. He rather enjoys whenever a bandit acts out of the ordinary and always tries to spare them when it happens. The way he reasons; if he´s not attacked, he won´t attack either, no matter who it is. Well, except for necrodudes.

Interesting story there, Decrepit. Fun to see someone else giving those bandits a second chance, even if it only means a second chance to a fun fight later on... wink.gif
