Just drove four hours round-trip for a college visit. Ugh.

They didn't have you spend the weekend? The college here puts prospectives up for the weekend in the frat houses and dorms so they can get the feel of the place and make some friends. They have a bunch of events planned for them, something they do with socks, and get to party a bit.

What are you hoping to major in?

I'm in my sophomore year, so we just took the 2-hour tour. Medieval studies, actually.

Heh, bouncing back to all the Lego talk of the other day...

I've found this little guy buried in my room, and he's now out of his box sitting on my desk

IPB Image

Can't remember when or even why I bought him, but he looks funky.

(Sorry, couldn't find a smaller pic that would work)

Morning all, such as it is. biggrin.gif

More severe weather threat for us. Well, more than a thread. Lots of flooding close by, though so far as I can tell I've come through okay . . . for now. The worst of the rains are to the east of us now, though both flooding and flash flood warnings remain in affect another hour. Better than the 'emergency' it was labeled as much of yesterday evening and on into the night. Later this morning rain ceases to be a concern, to be replaced by a much increased risk of tornadoes for some hours.

Otherwise I've nothing to report, having done nothing whatsoever since yesterday afternoon other than keep my eyes glued to the local TV station and several internet weather channels.

Oh yeah, I need to figure out and prepare to mail my internet purchase State sales tax due payment today. Don't plan to set foot outside the house except to check mail.

Morning, Decrepit! I hope your storms pass without incident. It looks like we’ll have some exciting weather here tomorrow. I plan to spend as much of it as possible on the porch.

I’ve just spent a few minutes exploring the new Bethnet Fallout forums. Initially it was horrifying, but after learning the ropes it began to make sense. I expect some of the TES folks from the Beth forums will not make the transition when those forums move over. It’s great to see that the Welcome and Welcome Back coffee pots of Chorrol are always full and hot! smile.gif

Stress over an extended period can effect your health drastically; and if you are watching the coverage so intensely, you may be letting yourself stay stressed over an extended period of time over worry about your weather.

I did this when my son went on his first tour in a war zone = watched the news incessantly and stressed over every report of any Bradley tanks or any fighting where I knew he might be; since I knew his platoon led the charge to Baghdad. . The damage that worry did to my health can never be recouped.

He has been stationed in war zones 5 times since then. What I have forced myself to do is to NOT listen to the news on the war for my own health and peace of mind.

If something is going to happen, it will. Be prepared for the event; and then tun off the news. Watching it won't change anything, and if you are prepared for the worst then you have no need to watch and find out if it is happening. Read a book, your ears and eyes will tell you if anything is getting too close to you.

Remember this, those news people like to feel important, and are well known to dramatize events just to boost their viewership numbers.

My husband and I actually saw an "on the scene" newsman in Florida covering some hurricane they were expecting to hit = shouting and acting like he couldn't stand up for the wind; when his clothing wasn't blowing and the trees behind him were still - and the rain was coming straight down, not at an angle.

So you can't allow those news people trying to raise their viewership numbers and sound important and needed - can't let them stress you out or get your health deteriorating, because that is all they are doing. In the old days before doppler radar and television, people prepared in advance; listened to the wind and looked at the sky to know if they needed to use those preparations. They didn't stress over it, because it would have done them no good.

If you are worried about serious flooding because of storm surges living on the coastal areas (like my parents had to living on the Florida Gulf Coast) - do what they did. Keep your scuba gear handy so you can swim out of your house if needed. Tornadoes and high winds = board your windows or buy storm shutters, etc. Keep canned goods that don't need cooking; and a canopener that doesn't need electricity. Keep bottled water, flashlights, and batteries. And keep it all in easy grabbing reach.

If you hear the wind coming; tornadoes and hurricanes sound like a train coming at you, go to the most central enclosed point in your home and cover with a mattress. My husband said you are safer in a ditch than inside your home, but I didn't want to lay in a ditch while a storm blew around me.

The thing is, your health has to come first and foremost; and spending extended hours watching news forecasts in fear for the storm - that can't be good for your health. If you live in tornado alley, you kind of have to just be prepared, then relax as best as possible (for your own sake).

Anyway, real glad you made it through all right.

I was just outside in an absolute blizzard of cherry blossom petals. It has been a strange spring here. Everything bloomed so early.

We have three awesome local weather people. It’s hard to choose whom to watch when things get exciting. They have all three worked for the same stations for decades. One guy sneezed on me at a U2 concert and I got the flu three days later, so he’s off my viewing list for life. We tend to switch between the other two. The man is very serious and prefers to show radar on the screen while the woman is very animated and heads straight into the worst of it for live action shots. She just loves bad weather and it shows. So we tend to watch/listen to the woman when building are likely to fall into the ocean on camera with her, and the man when we really need to see or hear where the funnels are touching down.

From The Weather Authority: T.W.E.R.K. for severe weather safety:

Take cover on lowest floor

Watch out for kids and elderly

Escape to the center of the room

Remain under a table or couch

Keep away from windows
