Oh, I really like that Baker Street remake! One of the most extreme remakes I’m aware of is Diamonds and Rust – from Joan Baez’s gently haunting original folk song into a passionately heavy metal ballad by Judas Priest. Surprisingly, I quite like them both.

QUOTE(SubRosa @ Jun 20 2016, 07:00 PM) QUOTE(mALX @ Jun 20 2016, 05:58 PM) The Boys of Summer - The Ataris This is one of my favorite songs, but this particular version of it is not my favorite. Too fast, among other things. The remakes I like best are ones where a band takes an old song and changes it up a little to match their own style. Like by changing the genre of the song or the instruments. So even though it is an old song, it sounds new and different. I like the Ataris and MXPX remakes because they took soft rock ballads and made them into blistering alternative/punk anthems. QUOTE(Acadian @ Jun 20 2016, 06:00 PM) QUOTE(SubRosa @ Jun 20 2016, 02:05 PM) Heh, I'll see your remakes and raise you Elder Scrolls in a full metal cuirass. Awesome! The song is pretty good too... But I still have one more remake to go: The Foo Fighters - Baker StreetThe thing about covers is that if you are going to post one, it should be better than the original. As much as I love the Foo Fighters, this cover is not better than the original. l Now, here is one that the cover is better than the original: GnR doing Aerosmith's "Mama Kin" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ASRJrWuEc4

Got in a mood to hear me some Sibelius and came across this fine filmed performance of the violin concerto. I'll cue it a bit before the start of the final movement. There's even a bit of eye candy for those in to that sort of thing. I am of course above such triviality. Sticking with Sibelius I returned to one of my favorite performances of his second symphony, Leonard Bernstein leading the Vienna Philharmonic. I again cue to a bit before the transition into the last movement. I consider both these works amongst the cream of their respective genres.

During lunch yesterday I listened to disc three of Ronald Brautigam's complete Beethoven piano sonata SACD set. It contains sonatas no.8-11 in chronological order. No.8 is the "Pathetique", the earliest of B's piano sonatas so popular (in classical music circles) that most pianist capable of doing so make it a repertoire staple, assuming they are at all interested in Beethoven that is. Here's its lovely slow second movement. The disc concludes with no.11, op.22, I work I knew not at all until acquiring the Brautigam set. It quickly became a favorite, especially its exhilarating opening movement. Here's a fine audio-only interpretation of the piece by Maurizio Pollini.
