I lived in Germany for two years.

Ik woonte twee jaaren in Amsterdam, in de Nederlanden ...

aber die meiste Zeit arbeitete ich in Deutschland.

I now speak fluent foreign, which is where you find yourself changing sprache in the middle of a sentence, or the wrong word order using.

I passed through Amsterdam just long enough to say I had been; but barely slowed the car down to enjoy the unique architecture. In Germany I did live close enough to the border of Belgium that we drove across to eat in Belgium restaurants a few times with friends. I didn't work in Germany because = as an American citizen I would have to pay taxes to both the German government and the US one - wouldn't earn enough to make working worthwhile; but I had a lot of fun there in Germany = LOVED it & all the people I met there !!!!

My wife has a lot of relatives in Germany (they went there to work 20-30 years ago and most of them stayed there) so we visit them once or twice a year and they return 'home' once or twice a year as well.

I've been to Netherlands many times, especially when I was still competing in running, one of the most important European running competitions takes place in Netherlands every year. I've never learned their language, though.

I can speak any language southeast of Slovenia (Croatian, Serbian, etc...) because they're similar. And sometimes knowing these languages in Germany is even more helpful than knowing German because many people from our parts live and work there. Ironically, only a few Croats and Serbs know Slovenian because our language differs from theirs and is very difficult to learn.

Oh how interesting! I know a lot of English words come from the German language.
